i just opened it up and it barely gets a connection or no connection at all. sometimes it says its connected to 3g and when i open the browser it says i have no data connection. i have no clue what's going on.
so far i've gotten a new sim card and i typed in *#*#4636#*# trying to reset the radio but neither seemed to help. i don't know what it can be. i thought this was all fixed with gingerbread. i have 7 days from today to return it to the seller (ebay) but i'm hoping to fix it myself.
does anyone have some pointers that may help me? i've done searches and that's where i got the idea to get a new sim and type *#*#4636#*# but that's all i could find here. anyone have another solution that i don't know about?
EDIT: i just called t-mobile and forgot that they don't support the phone and htc closed an hour ago. i really don't want a refurbished phone after getting it new. i guess i should get into contact with the seller if htc isn't able to help me fix the problem.
Is all 3G settings right ?
how so? i'm pretty certain they are. i say i barely/not getting any service is because for about a minute or two i was able to sync my gmail account with the phone but since then i haven't been able to get online.
Is your hand covering the bottom of the phone, on the back, blocking the antenna? Test by setting the phone on the table and see if signal gets better.
Wait, the antenna for the Nexus is on the bottom of the phone and not the top?

Yes the bottom plastic cover, and its very sensitive to your hand so in low signal areas leave it exposed to avoid signal attenuation.
Do you have the right apn settings? Is it the t-mo version of the n1?
it's the t-mobile version of the phone. i called htc and they said it's probably a bad antenna. i emailed the buyer and will be sending it back for an exchange.
Brand new n1? Next time just get it from Google's developers site or hit up craigslist as the buyers will let you try the phone out right on the spot.

Looks good - Another T-Mobile page still shows the Vario with Co-Pilot on this tariff at £119.99
Yeah , it is under "special offers" - look under the "300 mins for £14.50 for 12 months" deals
Thanks joker3001 ! just ordered one
Was looking for a reason to buy a Wizard anyway (or at least something to justify it to the wife  ) and the Sat Nav does just that !
Soon , the battle between the Universal & the Wizard will commence - pending a T-moble credit check of course
Cheers dude
Is this phone any different from the SX56?
I just installed the XDA ROM software into my SX56 and unlocked the AT&T phone which now accepts TMobile (the phone accepts my SIM card and TMobile made a call to me which came in). I am paying $19.95 a month and have had the service for about eight years
The problem I am having is that my phone screen now doesnt respond properly: Touching it causes the backlight to go on but most of the keys dont do what one would expect them to do: The phone turns on with a reminder from the calendar on the screen which wont DISMISS or CLOSE. Pressing on the windows logo and then on the phone key causes the calendar to come up and I am not sure which numbers are entered when I do manage to get the phone to come onto the screen (none of the right hand numbers seem to work at all). Does anyone recognise these symptoms and/or could they just show that my SX56 needs the ROM RE-flashing? I should add that pressing the Master Reset button with this ROM in place seems to make the phone shut off and then when you restart it, all of the data remains in place. I wonder if there is any possibility that the XDA ROM has prevented the reset button from working normally?
But then I saw this ad: The SDA site implies that all these phones are the same under the skin although an article written in 2002 http://wiki.xda-developers.com/uploads/tmobile-pocketpc.pdf implies that the manufacturer was coming out with some different processor at that stage and that the processor in the Wallaby was then already obsolete: Does anyone know if this phone represents any advance on the SX56 or is it newer or is my phone exactly the same as this one or is my SX56 actually better? (I already have the COPILOT software independently). Or is it just the same walllaby in a different casing which TMobile are tyring to get rid of because the manufacturer is as uncooperative iwth them as they are with anyone else?
Anybody had any luck with this?
I just called T-Mobile sales to ask what was included with the Copilot kit and was told that they are not honouring this offer due to a mistake. Worth a try anyway?
Mistake, but IS this phone any different from the SX56?
What the mistake was may be relevant: I just called them and they said they WERE although they had at first said that the CoPilot was extra and wasnt included with the price. I didnt take it any further as I couldn't figure out whether the phone they are offering is any different to the one I already have

It's a completely different phone. The Vario is an HTC Wizard with T-Mobile branding. There's plenty of info on this site on the differences between models.

Never heard of Google, or even http://wiki.xda-developers.com/?
Pricing mistake
The sales chap I spoke to said that the free Copilot offer only applies to other phones - it should cost £120 with the Vario. However, he said he works for direct sales, not the web sales team, so advised me to give it a go anyway, which I have done. It's before the 7.30pm cutoff for next day delivery, so I'll give you an update tomorrow...

Their "mistake" excuse is weak - if it is, why haven't they taken the page down?
It clearly states on that page Vario with co pilot. Whats the problem ? Get it bought
Re: Is this phone any different from the SX56?
"Sounds like the digitiser is up the swanee - have you tried recalibrating it?"
Not sure how to reclalibrate it but the problem appears to be that I dropped it and 10-12 vertical black lines started appearing to the right hand edge of the screen. Sometimes they are there, sometimes not. THere is usually at last one there somewhere. At about that time the screen stopped responding as I mention. Today the left third started displaying the same veritcal lines, though spaced quite far apart (about a millimetre). Screen doesn't APPEAR cracked: Does this sound like a digitiser and if so, how do you recalibrate it please or is there a link to somewhere on the XDA site which I cant find which might tell me? Or could it be the cable loose in the circuit board? As you touch the lower right hand corner of the metal casing where the vertical lines are, those lines flash (the right 10 or 12) on and off and every coloured bar everywhere on the screen or word of text has vertical lines on it even if the white parts don't??
(BTW FWIW I am in New York and couldn't take advantage of the .co.uk offer but was just wondering how they could give the unit away so cheap unless it was essentially the same as the 2002 units which are described on the XDA site)
Success! (I think)
Just checked my email on arriving home and my order has been confirmed by T-Mobile so it should be with me tomorrow. Still odd that they show it at £120 on one page and free on another, but I'm not complaining!
Re: Is this phone any different from the SX56?
@licensedtoquill - to me it sounds like you've dislodged the connections to the screen. Youcould try taking the thing apart and reseating it, but it's a delicate job and not for someone who's not used to dealing with miniature electronics. Might be work looking for a repair facility - PPC Techs have a good reputation.
As for why the phones are so cheap over here, the network operators will do anything to get you signed up to a contract, as that's where they make their money. It's easy to get a free top line phone if you chose the right contract. Especially one like this which locks you in for 18 months as opposed to the normal 12. They're banking on the fact that even with the 300 free voice minutes, you'll still ramp up the bill with SMS and GPRS over the life of the contract. That's why they put the unlimited half price rental "loyalty" bonus at the end to make sure you stick out the full term.
Mine is confirmed too - should be here before one tomorrow
The Guy on the phone (had to phone to confirm some details) said the deal was so good that they (the web sales team) were all snapping them up too , and that the deal was subject to stock , and that stock of the copilot kits would probably be exhausted by the end of today
No mention of a mistake at all
@zoidster: what time did you order yours? I needed one and did not have the time to order w/o co-pilot earlier in the day and this looked too good to be true. I got confirmation around 9:30PM UK and hope the stock is not finished yet.
It was about 4.30pm mate - mind you , in "sales speak" a few left probably means several thousand
If your order was confirmed & they charged you the £5.99 for next day delivery then I'd guess they had stock left
Thanks, I got confirmation and should be with me tommorrow.
Thanks for the link, saved me 50 quid.
Got mine !
yesterday , I managed to navigate to the deal via the homepage
tried again this morning and the same deal is now £199 !
Does this package come with a gps receiver as well??
It seems that my 8525 with Black Satin (WM6) has recently started crashing when I slide it close after sending a message or after sliding it open when recieving one.
The screen goes all dim and interlaced looking but it's really "off" as when I press the power button it actually boots up. When this happens that current text message is GONE poof!
I sat there and slid it open and closed 20+ times and couldn't repeat it but when trying to use it for real is when it freezes. It's not only with the text messaging though as I tried to slide it open to reply to a message on the internet (via wifi) and it locked up there also.
I did a search and haven't really found anything... guess I could reinstall but man, I hate having to do that... what all will I need to rememeber to back up? Text messages, phone numbers, settings for tomtom? bah!
Anyone ever experienced this?
Great, I think it's a loose connection somewhere... I noticed it was out and I had only put it down, not closed the slide. So just now when it was just idle I tapped on it and poof it locked up.
Great... Now what!

If it's still under warranty, take it in and have them look at it.
If it's not, look for one of the many disassembly instructions around, take it apart and reseat the cables.
I took mine apart not long ago to fix a non-working camera and it was amazing easy to get into the phone and remove and reconnect the cables.
Just make sure to read everything before trying it.
I bought it off ebay (supposed to be brand new) to unlock and use on a regional company's network. So doubt I'm covered.
http://pdasmart.zftp.com/instructions/Cingular 8525 Instructions.pdf
Is that a sufficient set of instructions? I'm not opposed to doing this, I repair laptops all the time and they are just about as difficult if not worse sometimes. I had attempted to take apart a friends dead 8525 a year or so ago but didn't know where the retention tabs were to get it opened beyond the obvious screws.

That would be the basics. I noticed that it doesn't say anything about the tape for the large ribbon cable, so there may still be some snags if you use those (I don't know if the tape is present on all the various rebadges of the hermes).
Nice that they use a tool to take it apart, I used something like a debit card on mine.
If you are comfortable disassembling a laptop, you should be fine. As with a laptop, just take it slow and be careful.
(shudders at the memory of disassembling a compaq and Apple laptop)
Word, I hate working on laptops... but I guess I got to!
I'll bet it is the battery header on the board. I had a similar issue and needed to repair a solder joint there.
same here.. i was lucky it was still under warranty..
good luck with the dissasembly!
it has been rather calm lately... though I am a lot more gentle when sliding it open and close...
I know it couldn't have been a fluke... maybe some dirt got in and now is out... I'm sure I will have to get at it eventually... till then I'll just keep treading lightly!
Oh, and Mike, thanks for those links... VERY good stuff!
Hey guys as soon as I notice this connection/data problem I decied to make a thread about it because this issue has been posted before but with little success on fixing it.
So have you guys notice that the signal of the HD2 will go from HSDPA or 3G to EDGE to GPRS and so on (sitting on the same spot) has this happened to you...?
I think that 99% of HD2 users have experience this. One of the the things that was causing for such a bad reception is also the 2.08.50.08_2 radio (in some areas) I live in L.A. California and I had that problem then the new 2.09.50.20_2 Radio seem to help out with this issue.
BUT!
That is not the actual problem, its not just software its actually a HARDWARE problem as well, Yup!
For you see HTC decied to put the Antenna AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PHONE not on the top. Almost 99% of the devices that receive some sort off signal (such as a radio or a phone) are made with an antenna ON THE TOP for obvious reasons, probably one of the reason why HTC decided to go through with this (even knowing that this issue would emerge) is because of the camera and the phone being so thin.
Check out the picture (the antenna is right under the batterie pins) so every time you hold your phone just around the buttons section at the bottom you are actually blocking the signal therefore making the connection go back and forward
SO WHAT'S THE SOLUTION?
Well one solution is...
You might be right on. My 1st gen iPhone had the antenna on the bottom and that would cause poor reception if you covered it up. There was even testing done to prove that was the case. It only had edge so it didn't bounce around like your HD2. BTW, I live in LA and have never had an issue with the 3G, as a matter of fact, I'm nearly always on 3G, I can't even remember the last time I saw E. I live on the West Side, maybe more towers around here, or I'm holding it "right"???
I personally think it's a combination of what you found and the T-Mobile network.
I think its more than just antenna placement. I have set my phone on the table and watched it go from H to 3G to E. The antenna is not covered up so there is some other issue going on. My coworker also has the phone and doesn't have the 3G issue. While the placement of the antenna could be part of the issue I think it can also be fixed with a radio update. I remember when I had the Wing I was able to boost reception with a radio update, yeah it shortened battery life but not by much. I'm hoping for a radio update that would make it a stronger connection.

-Exactly what item in that picture are you saying is "the antenna"?
-Can you please reference a link where you found that identification?
EDIT: A question for the others experiencing the "connection flipping" that this thread is about: do you ever notice the connection icon changing while you a have an "active" connection (i.e. when you're actually passing data), or only when the connection is live but idle? I'd like to add this to some other anecdotal evidence that a couple of us are looking at for a related theory on the cause.
Sorry to say, but it is not the antenna placement. My wife's phone gets 3G all the time and mine doesn't. I called Tmo and is waiting for a replacement.
I dont even get an H i only get 3g or edge im in los angeles but this makes sense.I doubt the antenna booster might work
guys, guys, it is not just an antenna placement problem as xeebot and speoples20 are stating is a COMBINATION OF BOTH I've been using the newest radio updated for one day and it seem to fix most of the Issue (haven't gone down all the way to E) like I said on my first post if you feel its the radio try the 2.09.50.20_2 Radio or the 2.7 they seem to be the most reliable ones.
if you still having doubts try covering up the bottom part of your phone with one or both hand and see your bars go down and sirphunke look at the attached picture that's where the antenna is, if you look thoroughly on the others you will notice the cable that hooks to the antenna at the bottom.

Again, there's a number of components in that picture, and I'd like to know exactly which one you're saying is the antenna. The only cable I see in this shot is the one hanging loose in the middle right of the picture...and in the other pictures that cable can clearly be seen plugged into the side of the SIM card housing.
I've seen this same set of pics that was first posted here at xda, and I've seen all manner of other tech sites link and refer to these pics, but in none of them have I seen indiviual components identified/located...so I ask you again to please reference where you found your information, because as far I can locate these are the only component-level views of the inside of the HD2

Reference where i found this info!? Like I said on my first post IT IS SOMETHING I NOTICE!! (its right at the top) haha
There... I updated the pictures on the first post I think that's the antenna (because it resembles many other phones I've open myself) the top ones could be the speaker or the flash GPS or BT, so no room for the antenna. Now you get what I'm talking about??
If you want to confirm this just open you own phone or contact HTC as I'm not a tech and neither was I there wen they build this phone...
lol
Hello Guys,
I just got my HD2 from repare, had to change the screen since it became unresponsive.
After I got it back, installed both WP7 and Anrdoid on it, I found out that the phone is not detecting any wifi networks. I tried in both WP7 and Android, and both of them do not detect any wifi networks. So it looks like when they changed the screen, they messed up WIFI connectivity. I'm guessing they might have forgotten to connect one of the connectors.
I am planning to take it back to them, but I was wondering if any of you knows which connector is for the WIFI, and if its easily visible once I take the back cover off, since I already done that before.
Thanks in advance
Hi dude,
if a connection is a problem and you even going to find it don't do it yourself.
it's a pretty small and gentle stuff, so you must know what you doing and how to connect them. Obviously you will need some serious tools.
my guess if you had all that - you already been doing this and not asking here.
so advice - not touching anything, not making it worse.
Best case: the connector came loose (which is not all that uncommon). It's the connector on the black wire on the top right side of the main board.
Worst case, they broke off a contact (which is also quite common).
Either way, don't try to repair it yourself but bring it back to the repair shop. If they accidentally broke off a contact then that requires a professional repair.
Thanks guys.
After some tests, I found out that the phone does detect wifi networks, but have extremely bad reception. I have to be very close to the wifi router for it to detect the network.
Any idea what might be causing this?

Like I said, either a loose connector or a contact has broken off. That will give you about 1 bar of reception while sitting next to your router...
Hi,
I bought an HD2 off of ebay on Wednesday that was in `Perfect working order`.
Yea.
Not exactly.
It works perfectly, until you try and connect it to a wireless network, you then go on the internet for a while, and if you put your finger on the little black section underneath the screen where the HTC logo is, it's hot to the touch, it then does what an HD2 does when it overheats; freezes then reboots itself.. I've tried using the internet with the 3G connection and it doesn't heat up, so it's definitely the WiFi causing this phenomenon.
Is this fixable, or FUBAR?
Thanks
PS. Facebook, Twitter and O!Market, I presume this trend would follow to other apps that use internet, none of them work despite being connected to a network. They all say `No Connection` or similar, would like some advice on that as well.
lol I encountered the same thing recently, "almost new" my butt.
Since I don't use my devices with cell service (radio's turned off always), I obviously rely on Wi-Fi. But it seems to me that Wi-Fi is causing overheating, but it once went down when Wi-Fi was off, so I'm thinking that my device is just "propelled" faster by Wi-Fi.
but anyways, my device would heat up right above the buttons and in the bottom portion of the device on the back. So I opened it up, only to be surprised to find the Wi-Fi antennae in a corner on the top and the cellular radio in the bottom.
At this point, I'm assuming it's processor is just beginning to go, hopefully I can find another HD2 motherboard or dead device to salvage from.
Or maybe fashion a heatsink, because the region always hotter than the rest of the device when it crashes. (yes I did see the thread where it was said not to do)
Another option is thermal pads which has a much easier process of installation. Just need to be sure they are placed correctly.
