The right way to root and upgrade to Gingerbread? - Desire HD General

Hi,
Firstly I have been reading loads about rooting and upgrading to Gingerbread, and I feel I am in a position and feel confident enough to go ahead and go it.
I have also read about different methods, and I feel the following is the easiest and less risky one...
Could somebody confirm this is the right thing to do and I am not forgetting anything? That'd be great!
1. Create a goldcard that is basically a backup of my phone and everything.
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-make-gold-card-for-htc-desire-hd/
2. Follow the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
One-click radio S-OFF tool.
3. After following those instructions, can then go ahead and find a Gingerbread ROM to flash to the phone. For example, this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984045
That's it. Or is it? I have the feeling I am missing something! Anybody put my mind at ease or offer any tips?
Thanks a million!

From addictivetips.com:
In the field of Android custom ROMs, what a Gold Card does is letting you install ROMs on your Android device that aren’t intended for your carrier. For example, if you have a T-Mobile USA HTC Desire, you can install an official ROM intended for the O2 UK HTC Desire, or even a generic ROM that isn’t locked to a carrier. It does so by disabling the CID (Carrier ID) check that the device does when installing a ROM.

You can root GingerBread with the GingerBreak tool. I found it is the only app for rooting GB.

Best way to root HTC Hero GSM?

Damn, I have read so many guides and ways to root my Android, but sincerely, they are so different I'm not trusting on any of it. Does anyone know how to correctly root the HTC Hero with Linux? Most of the guides are for Windows, and the one for Linux have some parts missing.

Hi, there's several rooting methods available. They depend on your installed ROM, and which version it is. The three main are
- FlashRec (for 1.5 ROMs)
- Goldcard (for 1.5 ROMs and 2.1 OTA'd phones)
- New PossibleGSMRoot.zip method posted for 2.1 ROMs
The first and last should be possible on Linux, although I'm not familiar on Goldcard method in linux
download rom manager from the market, then scroll to the bottom and flash alternate recovery

Ok that sounds great, I have 2.1, but I don't know anything about my rom or if it's an OTA'd phone. Could you explain me, and show me a guide for both goldcard and GSMroot?
Thanks.

how did you get 2.1? did you download it from the web or did you get an over the air upgrade? or did the phone come with 2.1 pre-installed? if you got it through a over the air update your pretty much out of luck as the goldcard method only works on windows and the flashrec method only works on certain 1.5 phones, if you got it from an ruu from the web then you could try the GSMroot method, if your phone came pre-installed with 2.1 then Im not sure if the GSMroot method would work or not but it would probably be worth a shoot, the GSMroot method can be found here:http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096
oh and instructions for the goldcard method and the flashrec method can be found here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253&highlight=goldcard but as i said flashrec only works on certain 1.5 roms and goldcard only works on windows
I installed it as an official update from the phone. I know there's a method to downgrade, I can get a computer with Windows so I could try goldcard. Or could I try the GSMroot?

if you updated from the phone itself then your best bet would be the goldcard method, the GSMroot was designed for people who upgraded using an RUU file, It may still work though, but I haven't seen anyone confirm that.

The ruu method works fine as well, even if you used ota.
Tested over at the VillainROM site btw.
Was just about to make a thread just like this. I'm from Finland and updated my Hero using OTA. After updating I've read so many articles about why I should root my Hero. So ever since I've been trying to google a comprehensive guide. But I always ended up in a dead end or a guide intended for CDMA Hero or something else.
Now I finally have rooted my Hero with PossibleGSMRoot.zip method
Thank you so much.

[REQUEST] Bell Desire Z ROM version 1.34.666.5

Edit: "Rom Development" is only meant for very advanced technical discussion directly related to ROM development activity and the delivery of actual ROMs and ROM components ONLY. Nothing else goes in here. Moved thread to "General." Please refer to "[REF] STOP! Read before posting!" ~TheRomMistress
I was wondering if anyone could post the ROM for this version? The other one in this forum isn't the exact same number, so I was just wondering if someone has the .5 version for warranty purposes.
Thanks!
I'm looking at the same version. Unrooted. Anyone got that?
Link to all shipped ROMS
My phone does ship with this rom..and it's unrooted as well.. but I just join the forum today and have no clue how to extract/backup the rom out..if you guy can give me a bit guide though( for example what post to follow) then I can get it out and send it over to you... And does any of you guys know if my phone need to be downgraded if I want to root it? (the guide say firmware version higher than 1.34 need to be downgrade, does my desire Z need to go through that if I want to root it?)

I also have the HTC Desire Z with the same software number 1.34.666.5 and want to root it. I'm not sure if I need to downgrade also before rooting as I do not know enough about putting fastboot on the phone to find out the CID. putting adb isn't so hard. is it possible to just ignore checking the CID and just going the creation of a goldcard to downgrade? If I dont have to downgrade, then it makes things a lot easier.

According to the Wiki, 1.72 and up require downgrade.
I followed the wiki and successfully rooted my phone to have S off, have Super CID and have simlock off plus have clockwork recovery installed from rom 1.34.666.5 just like ptesmoke
At the end of the guide, it says, "You can delete the files in /data/local/tmp they are not needed anymore. " How do I go about doing this? is it done in ADB? I don't know the commands for it and I don't see this directory on the SDcard. I assume this is in the internal memory of the phone?

Yup you can delete it, I usually use root explorer to do all my stuff dealing with the phones internal mem. It is the phones storage, not your sdcard. If you don't wanna pay for root explorer I think I've heard es file manager handles root directories fine and is free

I am having a hard time finding the 1.34.666.5 rom. I was running cm9 on my Desire Z, but due to company policy, I had to unroot the phone. I got the 1.34.666.1 rom from shipped-roms, and the phone is back to froyo, but apparently need the 1.34.666.5 rom to be able to upgrade to gingerbread. I have searched everywhere for a download, but can't find anything but the .1 rom... Is there any way to upgrade from 1. to the official gingerbread update from HTC?

My New Desire HD

Finally I purchased a Desire HD on Tmobile without any contract ( I Paid just for the phone) Waoow things did change a lot since all the roms I tried on my beloved HTC Blueangel.
It is locked on T Mobile
SW 1.39.110.1 Is this the latest rom? Although so far It didnt bother me all the bloatware from T Mobile, Is it worth leaving them alone ? I know it is possible to debrand desire and unlock etc. Is it also possible to Debrand Desire HD and unlock and flash with HTC Stock rom? Or shall I just not bother?
And also realised some of the HTC things dont work well HTC HUB unable to download catalog etc. Any reason?
Hi,
I got mine on monday afternoon, coming from a Desire.
By Tuesday morning it was Rooted running Leedroid's Rom, wow what a difference.
Only thing I dont like so far, (yes the screen is not as sharp/colourfull, but you do get used to it, it's just when they are side by side you really notice it), is that the ringtone etc is a little on the quiet side.
Apart from that, what a piece of hardware.
Good luck whatever you do, just enjoy it.
Cheers
Been reading on leedroids thread, Although it is easy to follow the instructions, I just would like to know what is permaroot s-off etc mean?

Woohoo
Since I got my new phone I can not stop reading
I completed visionary temp perm root
And S off unlock etc etc. checked at the boot S -off is there so now my existing orange sim works on this tmobile branded DHD all good.
I have done all this in order to actually put a stock rom on to my new phone without any tmobile bloatware on it.
Now the my phone is ready for a ROM
Can I just put HTC stock rom ? If I do will I be able to install a custom rom later on ? Would I loose root or any other features so far?
Many regards
If you're going to all that trouble, why bother with the stock ROM when LeeDRoid has created (and supports) a truely great custom ROM 1.51? Highly recommend it, as he has made it with a custom kernal allowing easy OC or UC with SetCPU & Smartass governor.
You made need to ENG S-off before flashing the recommended radio though. But make sure you do a full backup with ROM Manger and also copy full sdcard to PC first.
Thanks for your answer, I dunno why I kinda want to keep it stock for a little while before I start flashing with Developers excellent roms

Good idea. Then you will actually appreciate the advantages of leedroid when you get around to flashing it. Flash it straight away and you won't really know what the difference is.

Someone Swyped my idea.
If I was to flash with stock rom later on can I flash it to Leedroids rom later? As I read stock 1.72 2.2.1 somehow deroots and makes changes so can not flash it to custom roms ? Is that right ?If so what do you think my next step ?

As far as I know, you have to downgrade to 1.32 first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Then root again s-off with visionary, you can then upgrade to a custom rom & kernal (over/underclock CPU).
Some ROM are optimized to work with certain raidios (battery / reception performance, so to flash the suggested one, you'll need to Eng s-off as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076
All worked for me
on the first link about downgrade it says!
System requirements:
HTC Sync (or ADB drivers)
Desire HD with build number 1.72 or higher
Not sure how this is related to me as mine is currently on 1.39

OK, I got you, the post wasn't that clear. Your now stock 1.39 considering upgrade to 1.72 or other OTA update / ROM?
If you upgrade OTA, it will "unroot" your phone, and then you'll have to follow the steps (or some of) I outlined in my previous post. That is if you wish to have root again.
If you wish to upgrade and have root, best bet would be to just install a custom 1.78 ROM and kernal to match.
Yes, for now I just want to upgrade to stock HTC 1.72 and perhaps later flash a custom Rom as I am not very clues up on Android devices ( coming from wm environment) as my previous post what should be my next step ( clean HTC stock Rom ) ?

How do I check my CID ? I cant seem to see it in the bootloader screen ? and anyone know what simlock image crc etc do?
I'd recommend getting permanent root (visionary), eng s-off AND radio s-off, install rom manager from market and flash clockwork mod recovery from it, and then there is a guide on here to upgrade to 1.72 without losing root, by flashing it through clockwork mod.
Still, the easier option is to install a custom rom since those will obviously not try to unroot your phone.

If Super CID, should have CID-11111111, meaning carrier ID unlocked, enabling flashing of ROM other than carrier specific (I think).
Image CRC - not too sure, possibly checksum of certain working harware, radio etc?????????? Anyone?

Branded t-mobile desire hd

Helllo,
I have a desire hd on software version 1.84.110.3 on 2.2.1 branded on t-mobile. I basically want to debrand the phone and install the stock unbranded software to get rid of the t-mobile apps and flash screen, and get software updates quicker. If possible I would like to keep my phone in a stable state so if anything did happen to the phone in the future I can send it back for repair. Is this possible if so how would i go about it? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply, i have had a look at the guide but i dont see anything about a goldcard. I was understood it as if you have a branded phone you need to create a goldcard???? Please correct me if i am wrong
I think once you've SuperCID'd your phone you don't need a goldcard, as that just messed about with something to do with CIDs.

I got my T-Mobile HD Desire yesterday...and today I have LeeDroid Gingerbread running on it. I used the gold card method found here: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-make-gold-card-for-htc-desire-hd/
It was simple. Just follow the steps exactly and you'll have no problems. I followed the links in that website to complete the process. My phone is rooted, radio s-off and eng s-off. There seemed to be so many different ways of doing it on this forum that I eventually gave up. That link, above, is on one of the "how to's" in here and references this site - I just found it clear, concise and easy to follow because it's aimed at noobs rather than tech-wizards. Good luck!
So i need to create a gold card and then perm root it with s-off? And i am fine doing all this with my software version?

You have no option but to downgrade. You can't root the phone until you've done that, and you can't stick a custom ROM on unless the phone is rooted.
Like I said, there seemed to be so much conflicting information on here that I went elsewhere. That link, and the ones that follow, are well written in plain English.
These are the steps I followed:
1 - Make goldcard: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-make-gold-card-for-htc-desire-hd/
2 - Permroot the phone: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-permanently-root-htc-desire-hd-complete-guide/
3 - Radio S-Off and Eng S-Off: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-gain-s-off-radio-and-engineering-on-htc-desire-hd/
4 - Flashed Optional FULL WIPE to EXT4 patch, then flashed radio 12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2[/U], and then flashed the ROM all from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056727
I followed Lee's instructions to the letter and had no problems.
Dips44,
I am thinking of doing the same. I'd be interested to hear about your experience and any recommendations.

I dont think i will be doing it just yet as there is just to many guides out there and confusion. I mean just on this thread somesay go for it others say downgrade, need a goldcard, goldcard not needed. Let me know if you do try
Just to clarify,
If your T-Mobile branded you WILL need a goldcard. If your software version is greater than 1.3x.xxx.x you WILL need to downgrade to root. The goldcard is needed to downgrade.
Where else are you confused? I am more than happy to help.
Ok so let me get this straight I will need to follow the follow steps
I will need to create a goldcard following this guide
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/...htc-desire-hd/
I then need to downgrade...
How do I do that?
Once I have downgraded I need to perm root following this guide
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/...omplete-guide/
I then need to s-off using this guide
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/...htc-desire-hd/
Do I need e-off? What is this? Also how do I then install an official unbranded gingerbread rom?
Thanks
Where to start. Follow this guide.
How to downgrade to 1.32.405.6 WWE
You want to follow Section's 1 & 2a
Also i have read about ruu...can i just flash my phone with a ruu?
Once you have followed that guide, simply follow this one.
One click ENG S-OFF
Then this one,
One click Radio S-OFF tool
Simply put this is the process you need to follow.
1). Create Goldcard
2). Downgrade to 1.32
3). Root using Visionary+
4). Remove device security & SIM unlock
5). Enjoy
Great thanks for that just one more question once i have done all that how can i flash an offical gingerbread rom?

Once you have followed all the above guides, your handset will be ready to flash anything.
Download ROM Manager from the Market, and flash ClockworkMod Recovery from there. Any 3.x.x.x recovery is sufficient.
Now donwload this ROM - seraphic_gb_rooted_0-1.zip
From this thread - HERE - 1st Post
This ROM is the exact HTC Gingerbread update but with root access added. Nothing else and nothing taken away.

Well this maybe a better root for me as i dont really need root access. I just want to debrand and install gingerbread....that possible? or should i follow the guide?
Ok, if that is the case, simply downgrade to 1.32.405.6 then run the latest Gingergread RUU.

Root on 2.37+ is achievable

For those who are on versions 2.37+ - I've managed to be able to root my 2.43.661.1 and know someone else who rooted a 2.50 DHD.
Of course, this may not work on all but it is definitely worth a shot.
1. Download a 1.32 Stock RUU
2. Create a Goldcard (any guide will tell you how)
3. Install HTC Sync and run the RUU so it flashes the phone.
4. Follow a normal DHD rooting guide.
I don't know if would work on all DHD's above 2.37 but can't see why not. I just rooted two phones with a friend and all seems to run fine.
So if you've been waiting, give it a try. It won't hurt if it fails, but I can tell you it has had success.
(Phone was a branded TELUS - 2.43.661.1)
which rooting guide did you follow.... ??????
is it downgrading 2.37 ???????
gimme the link .....................
This won't work (atleast without s-off), you'll get an error when trying to run the RUU with a lower version number than the one currently on your phone...

Same Bootloader version error as bolded. Phone reboots and everything is fine, so no damage done by trying. I'm not sure if its a goldcard issue as I don't have another SD card to try at the moment.
madmaxx, what version were you running before using that method. My understanding is this wont work with 2.4+ versions.

Currently running Telus 2.43.661.1
No root, no s-off
Downloading 1.32 RUU from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824357
I have a goldcard, so I'll see if that lets me downgrade. I'll post back in an hour or two and let you know how it goes.
EDIT: As posted below, Bootloader error "Error 140 Bootloader Version error"
My understanding is to downgrade 2.4*.***.* roms you NEED to be s-offed before applying the 2.4*.***.* update.

This is understandable, you don't have S-OFF.
Please stop posting "guides" like this, unless you've actually CONFIRMED it works with screenshots and everything. Flashing unknown stuff BRICKS DEVICES! I can't stress that enough.
I also get the 140 bootloader error. We can't root 2.42 or higher without s-off.
I had read a little about rooting, but the downgrade part always sort of put me off to the whole thing as it seemed very hard. I did have the latest upgrade, so it seemed it wasn't possible. I stumbled on to a guide here pretty much like this and I finally managed to downgrade, root and install MIUI, then I went a step further and installed the latest LeeDrOID kernel.
I can say that it has pretty much effectively doubled my battery life. It's amazing, and I now have complete control over my phone. I love this place! =P
fuzzbeans: You're lucky you were on a 2.37 or lower version. Anyone running 2.4* versions cannot root/downgrade unless they were already s-offed before hand.
Anyone on the east coast of Canada with a XTC clip?
The first post should be edited to say any 2.4+ version needs s-off for this to work. If not, you're out of luck.
Any word if 2.46 will ever be rootable? i would love to root my device !!

From my (basic) understanding, they need to find a new way to s-off the device so you can flash custom roms and perm-root the device.

I said it may not work.for everyone. This would never brick a device so don't be so dramatic. Worked for me, so I shared...
