DIY stylus - £1 and five mins - Acer Iconia A500

Conductivity is the key
Aluminium - Camera stand had lying about (from poundworld for, yes £1) - take one of the legs off.
Steel - Brillo pad, (in the kitchen below the sink ) rip a bit off, take the plastic bud of the leg, stick wool inside the leg.
Paper - paper yes I know its not the best conductor, but needed so as not to scrape the screen, tape a bit to cover the wire wool end.
Done, works, works well and I am using it Looks ok would even use it outside.
Plus has a hole on the other end if you want to add some string to attach to pad or put round neck not to get lost.
Plus Plus two more legs left on camera stand to make some extras
Not as pretty as some paid for ones obviously - bet hey, free for me and a £1 for you if you dont have the camera stand, oh and dont know how much brillo pads are.
I am sure I could have made it abit neater, but maybe someone else could do a nice neat one and post a pic here.
Good luck...

You can also just use some plastic from an Anti-Static Bag you get from electronics packaging and tape it to the end of a pencil.

Hey good thinking!
Better get out and buy a hard drive at £50 so I can use the anti static wrapper.
Then it only costs £50, although I do get a free hard drive that I don't need, but hey I could use it as a door stop, cheers...

Why would go out and buy a $50 HDD just for the anti-static bag? Seems to me that would defeat the purpose of making a stylus since you could probably buy one cheaper.

Cause I don't have any anti static bags, I had this and made the stylus it works well and just wanted to share, but not with you because you're not very nice and you are not my friend

Why are you turning this into a personal issue?

Grow some bigger manlier hands or put a rubbery case on it and be done with it.
I didn't really have any slipperiness problems, but I put a rubber case on it anyhow as I feel silly putting stickers all over it. (I am using a screen protector.) I care more that it is in good condition than that people see what kind of phone I have though.
The phone isn't slippery like soap. I think what he means is its pretty thin and easy to lose grip of it because of its shape if you dont hold it right. I had a fe close calls with it but haven't dropped it yet.
Oh I get it... I can reach the entire screen & trackball with my thumb the way I hold it though and didn't have any near drops or anything in the days before I put the cover on it. So as I said, grow some bigger hands!
It's not even close to being as slippery as the MyTouch/Ion/Magic.

I agree - some times the unit is soooo slippery. I suspect though, with the cold weather, my hands are fairly dry. Try putting some moisturiser (E45?) on & see if it makes any difference!

Capacative stylus from HTC....Weird

I got mt HTC Capacitive stylus the other day, how the hell are you supposed to use it? It is as fat as my finger with a very loose fitting piece of plastic at the business end that has a red dot in the centre of it. This is not a well made piece of hardware and will certainly break in short order. To make matters worse it cost £20..................Waaaaaaaaaaa

I have the dagi version which by all reports is pretty much the same (£15ish for me though)... its a bit tricky and takes a bit of getting used to and I dont know why they need the whole of that plastic bit at the end as it seems to work ok with just a small part of it... but after some playing with it I find its very accurate and I can write chinese characters much easier and select text for copy and paste or to get a pop up definition much easier too... oh and I keep mine in my pocket and so far its proved to be fairly robust... (although I wouldnt want to sit on it to be fair)... I would like one that isnt so big at the end and was more like a pen... but so far so ok...
Ever considered trying to sand the tip just to make it smaller...?

I've found that blister tablet packs work well. I think it's the hollow metal case. I'm still experimenting. It's too sensitive at the moment.

Camera scratches easily? Fixable in any way?

I have a small mark on my Camera already, and I've been handling my camera with extreme care this whole week/weekend thus far. I already have a pretty small scratch (not across the lens thankfully?) and I have no idea how it happened! Been moving my phone around very gently.
Is there anything I can do about the tiny scratch, or do I just have to live with it? I get pretty OCD about small things like this, so I need to make sure there's nothing I can do to try and remedy the scratch before flipping out.
Thanks everyone.

The Silicone Sleeve sprint sold me for $11 after 25% off (Premier) and Tax lifts it up off any table
Relax. You and everybody else's phone will become dinged up. You are carrying it around with you all day everyday.
You can use the kickstand to keep it off the table or desk and use a case or pouch for carrying.
Use a liquid lens fixer like for glasses.
I cut a little piece from some old cheap screen protectors to cover mine. I'm sure there is some effect on the picture quality, but no current phone is going to compare to a Cannon anyway.
Resisting Lens Scratch
You can always buy a thick rubber washer and glue it around the camera lens. If you do not want to glue it, you can place it in between the cover and the phone. The solution is not fool proof, but it will work nicely to provide extra cushion and space. This solution is easy and cheap. The washer should not be to tight or small in diameter, so it does not interfere with the camera.

Placing a rubber washer between the battery cover and the phone, would not do anything to keep the camera lens from resting on the surface that would scratch it.

I was thinking something along the lines of this. Basically you just need a ring that rests around the lens.
Something similar to this comes to mind. Of course, you wouldn't need to have a new lens on it. Just a piece of metal.
This could be magnetic, or glued. You could probably rip the phone apart and replace the piece with a more protruding piece to do the same, but that's far more intrusive.
I'm sure we'll see commercial magnet like solutions for this. I mean, come on. A small magnetic ring is all we need. Someone is going to bank on that.
Or how about using hoverboard technology so the phone never touches anything, and hovers in midair? Geez people, buy a case.

Why cover the entire phone with a case when you can just put something around the lens?
I don't like cases. I think these devices were made to look and function in a certain way. If they "needed" a case it should have been built more robust.
I've had an iPhone 3G with no case for 2 years. I've also had no regrets.

It was sarcasm. I too, like mine naked, the way it was born. I have a leather case on my hip to put it in when I'm not using it. Jabbing at the fact that people actually want an accessory to attach to the camera lens ring just to keep it from touching another surface and getting scratched, like there should obviously be a market for that. Anyone that anal about possibly scratching a cellphone camera lens... I'm surprised they EVER pull the phone out to do anything at all. (again, sarcasm)

Haha yea. It's a camera on a phone... My DSLR is in it's nice cushy case. My phone will reside, albeit tightly, in my pocket.
I put mine in my pocket up until today, when I got my HTC leather hip case. I got tired of the pocket lint getting in the earpiece grill.
Tip: use Scotch tape and a blunt tipped object to get the lint out of there.

It's nice and snug. There's a hole on the bottom for your fingers to push the phone up to take it out. Magnetic flap, no metal button or anything, so no worries about phantom scratches. Stays close to the hip as well, and doesn't feel oversized or anything. Tight enough on the belt that I don't worry about it falling off.
Cool. I'll definitely check that out then. Thanks.

The one I have is from Sprint online: Part Number CFH2258R
I got a case for mine simply because I've dropped my iPod touch a few times and I'm pretty sure it'd be damaged by now if it didn't have a silicon skin, the EVO's camera worried me as well... The silicon skin Sprint sells seems a lil' bulkier than it has to be tho, and the button bumps aren't as defined as they could be (my iPod touch's skin actually made the buttons easier to press, quite the opposite here). I'm waiting for a different more glossy/smooth skin from Amzer to ship before I decide if I'll just go naked or what...
i found cameraphone lens protector circles at a store called daiso near by me. works great

Replacement battery cover

I hope these come out soon. I really dislike how slick the entire phone is. When trying to have a phone conversation, and trying to rest it on your shoulder, holding it between your shoulder and face, it slides right out...
Same here. TMo was suppose to start doing the custom printed covers, but they are slick as well. It was 100 degrees yesterday and sweat doesn't help when you're trying to silde it open one handed either. TMobile has a rubberized shell for it, but it was way too bulky.

Yeah, I meant to mention those "skins" too, I am not a fan of those. One of my praises for this phone was it's slim profile, and adding one of those skins would make it just that more bulky. I like the material on the back of the Droid.
I like the battery cover on the back of the original MyTouch 3g, other then the fact that it slides open way to easy...

Have y'all looked into eGrips. Might be worth it for now.
Well again, those I am not a fan of. First: I am not sure how those attach, and if it is simply a stick-on, I'd hate to have it leave a residue when you go to remove it. And since it's a cover on a cover, it starts increasing bulk. If someone would come out with a replacement cover, just in a different material, I'd be happy
Edit: I also don't want something that would make it a pain to slide in and out of my pocket... those super grippy type covers do just that. They're great at keeping them in place on a car dash, or on your shoulder, but it's likely going to turn your pocket inside out, leaving you open to being bum rushed when the change falls out of your pocket.

Eh, maybe I am old fashioned, but I hate headsets more than the battery cover I rarely use the phone in my car, so I see little use of the headset. Actually, I only use the headset when listening to my music.
OH, which BTW, if you used Subsonic, now you can browser your server using the phone's browser since it has Flash support, no need for the Subsonic app Maybe I'll post that in the apps thread...
The phone is great but it is way to slippery.
I was thinking of maybe taping off parts of just the back cover and spraying on a product called Plasti Dip just to give it a thin rubber coating.

Agreed on the slippin slide. I have a bench seat in my truck so i have to keep a t-shirt on the seat to hold my phone in place. (while streaming pandora into my stereo!)
So since gel skins have YET to show up at my T-mo store... I have been contemplating how to spray paint it or rubber coat it... If someone is bold enough I would love to see the photos.
Here are the potential problems
1. the holes in the back for the speaker.. we can porbably just poke them out with a pin after spraying.. hopefully it still looks pro
2. i started to pull off the front plastic and it seemed like the plastic screen cover was connected.. not sure if I want to mess with that... but it might look lame if the front doesnt match.
Possible anti-slide solutions...??
- some sort of stick on rubber tread that looks cool??Maybe if we find a cool piece of rubber tread that is made to stick on or we glue it one it could look cool and stop the damn phone from sliding.
p.s. my dream would be for someone to make a metal cover like the nexus (no i dont want a nexus I just like the finish that looks like an adults phone) with rubber tread lines built into it.. maybe I need to find a manufacturer. ..
I hate the slick back cover as well, i miss the cover on my G1 its the non-slick bio-hazard one. just the type of grip makes it great to slide in and out of pocket, less scratches, easier keyboard slide out.
Its too glossy for my taste i have to wipe the whole phone when im done with it for the night to make sure the finger prints are gone, gets annoying.
i'm looking for a nice matte cover as well, i hate the slickness(i dropped my phone because it slid out of my pocket). worst case scenario i might grab a replacement black one and sand it to a matte texture.
I am about to spray it with a satin black car trim spray... and if that doesn't work the next step will be a rubberized spray I think... Will post if it doesn't look like complete garbage lol
Well I hate to get ahead of myself but here is my rubber coated battery cover.. I am still waiting so patiently for it to completely dry. If what I used works then I will post a photo how to . Hang in there!

What product did you use on that, and did you tape off the holes or just poke them out with a toothpick type device?

Turned a hard cover book into a case- comments?

So I wanted a case that looked like an actual book, and I could only find ones for ipad and e-readers. So, I went to the local thrift shop, picked up a hilarious hard cover book, gutted it and turned it into a cover for my Tab 10.1
Now, I haven't finished the final gluing or figured out a practical way that I can make it a stand(maybe you have some suggestions?). As for making it a stand, I don't want to add to the thickness, but still want it to be easy enough to prop up.
The pictures are attached.
Just wanted to add one more thing: MMMM! Blender recipes! Bet you never thought of that!
This is... cool I'm looking for a good case for a while now. The size seems to fit quite good. Probably gonna try it for myself
I thought about doing this a long time ago, but never found the right book. I just can't see using a recipe book, maybe a gun cleaning manual, something a bit more manly.
As for making it stand, rubberized tape on the corners, simple to do.

Well the book is partly to protect from would-be thieves. Who would steal a book of blender recipes?
Also, rubberized tape? Would that hold up to furious tapping? I also wanted it to be able to do very low angles too, so I figured I needed some sort of Velcro or string solution...
Velcro would work, at least for a bit. Look at how commercial cases work and find a solution you think you can duplicate. I always end up putting my glasses case under the thing for elevation even with the commercial case I use. As far as thieves goes, that was why I thought a gun cleaning manual might deter them.
ok so this is something that confuses me why does everyone that buys a non ipad tablet have to buy a folder/folio style case, what about some of us that want a case that just has grip on the back for holding while slouching on the couch? i found only one brand for the galaxy tab 10.1, the gumdrop and its $50, looks nice but come on i want choices . and btw OP this actually looks really cool, just has no use to me lol.

The point of having a case is so that the tablet is protected when you are carrying it around and ideally to act as a stand when you want to prop it up. I prefer having it out of the case when I am using it normally, but on the road it's great to have a case.
As for gripping it when laying on the couch, I don't feel the need for any extra case/grip. That would just make it more bulky. Is it too slippery for you or something?

Considering you're stuck in the 1950s, I'll one up you: if you need a manual, it's not "manly."
Nice case OP. I'm sticking with the vipertech clip case for functionality (same as pyroskins and atech), and still available on amazon for <$15...
Great idea. Though I find my 10.1 a little too big to carry around, it's mostly used for in-bed browsing.
I usually carry my Nook Tablet that uses a B&N book cover. It's great for carrying around inconspicuously.
Here's an idea: you can also glue/double-side tape one of those cheap ebay $6-10 TPU cases to a hollowed out book cover. It could look like a factory job -- and be unobtrusive and secure. 3M indoor/outdoor mounting tape should work well.

Unfortunately that would prevent me from easily taking the tab out of said case. At home I don't really need a case, it's just when I am out and tossing it into a bag or something.

Actually yes it is slippery on the back, and i do not ever wish to prop up my tablet i have a tv for watching videos and i rarely take it out of the house so i dont need to protect the front
That's pretty nifty. I will be trying this once I find a thrift store. I've got some ideas I want to try now.
Plus one OP

so funny! I like it!
While I'd never be able to give up my leather folio case for traveling, if I found the right donor book, I'd definitely use this when I'm just around the house and in my office. Thanks for the awesome idea OP

ok so this is something that confuses me why does everyone that buys a non ipad tablet have to buy a folder/folio style case, what about some of us that want a case that just has grip on the back for holding while slouching on the couch? i found only one brand for the galaxy tab 10.1, the gumdrop and its $50, looks nice but come on i want choices . and btw OP this actually looks really cool, just has no use to me lol.

There are a variety of silicone skins you could use for better grip
great idea! the perfect book for this would be a hardcover Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy... the possibilities are endless - I'm off to the used book store!
