[Q] Retain application between ROMs - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Is there a way to retain applications between trying different ROMS. I am sure there are ways where I don't have to install all applications all over again.
Thanks.

Use Titanium Backup.
If the ROMs you try are similar and differ just by version number, then you can skip formatting your ext3 partition on your sd card (if you use app2sd, etc.)

Using CWM is the best as backup & restore is quite easy...IMO Titanium messes ROMs alot if not used correctly...Just backup using CWM, Flash new ROM, get back to CWM and choose advanced restore > Data only...

using nandroid to switch between RAV/Cyanogenmod?

I have an SD card with 3 partitions: fat32(7gB)/ext4(488mB)/swap(91mB). not sure what order I created them in, and not sure if that matters.
when I do a nandroid backup, is it also backing up my ext4 partition where my apps2sd apps are kept? I want to be able to use nandroid to swap between many different ROMS, but still have all my settings saved per ROM. And hopefully apps as well, whether it be by the nandroid restore or (and im not even sure if it works this next way im describing) by different ROMS being able to see the apps in apps2sd and use them?
Like I said, Im not sure how apps storage/location actually works. If I install apps on the sd card, and I put an upgraded or even a different custom ROM on, does the system see the apps on the new ROM? Or are we also supposed to wipe ext partitions as well?
Can someone let me know what "wiping" data and/or cache actually does? IS there a basic phone architecture doc I can read to see what data / cache actually is used for?
Wiping refers to the internal memory of the device. Not the SD.
By wiping you remove all settings and software installed on the device itself.
If you boot after a wipe, you will have to re-enter your google account information and wait for the sync to complete.
If you have apps2sd, (most of) your apps will be on the ext partition on your SD card. Those don't get deleted when you wipe. If you have go from 1 apps2sd capable rom to another, your apps will still be there. And the apps that store settings on the SD will have their settings saved too (only one I know of is gem-miner).
try bart

I recommend using a more complete back-up and restore tool like BART or Switchrom. Do a search for BART on the Dream Development forum and you'll find everything you need. It's built in to the latest RA recovery images as well and works great.

What to use to backup when switching ROMs?

Hey guys,
I'm currently using MIUI and I want to switch to CM6.1, but I'm using Darktremor's App2SD and I'm not sure what to use to backup the apps and data and what to use to restore them.
I tried backing the stuff up with Clockworkmod's recovery but after I flashed CM6, I restored the data and SD Ext. only and the phone couldn't boot up the ROM.
How do I switch ROMs and still keep my apps and their data?
Titanium backup.
Titanium Backup, if all you want are apps and data.
Recovery backs up the whole ROM.
Titanium Backup used to work but after I started using App2Sd Ext it doesn't show any apps in the list.

I use enoms and dark tremor apps2sd with titanium backup and never had this issue. Make sure you don't have a any filters enabled in titanium and try installing newest busybox.

It depends on what type of backup you want. Do you want to restore the apps onto new rom?
You can boot into clockworkmod and do a nandroid backup. This would backup entire nand. You would just simply then flash same nand partition and restore rom back when needed.
If you simply want to backups your apps/app data then you can either do the nand backup and then use appextractor to restore apps from the backup to new rom or you can use Titanium Backup to backup/restore all your apps/app data.

Really?! I've done this before and all worked fine, but I always use Titanium Backup as a failsafe method.

You are probably using a buggy version of CWM and it isn't backing up your app data from sd-ext maybe.
Or he's only choosing to restore sd-ext and not data too.

Thanks for your reply everyone. The issue is I am in the process of changing my sd card as I currently have a 1gb card. And most roms recommend at least 2 gb or more.
Yes indeed I do want to copy all apps/memory into new rom if possible?

[Q] Flashing ICS ROM, but keeping data from GB (CM7)

I read a few threads on the matter, but replies are a bit confusing and not much info for HD2 in particular, so I decided to start a new thread.
I am considering the option of flashing an ICS based ROM such as NexusHD2, but would like to preserve my settings and apps from my current CM7 ROM. I currently use Dorimanx ROM ver 2.3.7 (CM 7.4.5) with highly customized GoLauncher, a2sd (1 GB partition, 256 MB SWAP). The device is the EU model.
I wouldn't want to have to reconfigure all over again so I was wondering what would be the best option to preserve my settings and apps to the new ROM. I found some mixed responses on the use of Titanium Backup. It seems that some apps would get corrupted and restoring settings and data from CM7 to CM9 using TB causes a number of errors. There are many other backup programs, but it seems that most of them are doing the same thing as TB and may fail.
Is there a good tool that was proven to work well in porting CM7 apps and settings into a CM9 ROM? What would be the best plan when doing the upgrade considering the current software details described above?
Thanks for thesupport.
Only a couple of apps have differing GB and ICS versions, and for the apps which don't, Titanium Backup has never failed me. It will backup all of your apps and app data, and I've never had any corrupted backups. Another thing which you could do would be to backup in CWM, flash the new ROM and then advanced restore the data.

I've been thinking about advanced restoring /data only in CWM, but wasn't sure if there are any other CM7 specific stuff inside. Thanks for your prompt reply. I'll be backing up all in CWM and TB and will be playing around a little bit. Still open to suggestions, though, so please let me know if you hav any other advice. Eventually, I'll be posting the results here for future reference.
Why do you want to do that?
You can use some backup app like Titanium Backup

CWM backs up all ROMS in NAND and NativeSD

on my cwm, i tried backing up my NAND ROM and it ended up creating a 3 GB backup including sd-ext. any way i can tell it to back my NAND ROM only? Searched around, to no avail.
Also, gapps package with aroma to install to sd-ext would b sweet. seems many of us want it!
cheers
You mean you have NativeSD roms that you don't want backed up?
I think there's an option in CWM to 'advanced backup' or something like that, which allows you to backup only certain partitions. There's certainly an advanced restore feature, so I don't see why there wouldn't be the same with backups.

There isn't a advanced backup in the CWM versions we have (last time I checked), but there is in TWRP (and 4ext I think)
