Gingerbread update? - Atrix 4G General

I can't find anything on this, and noone seems concerned!
This is moto's flag ship device and I can't find any ETA on the upgrade
Froyo is dinosaur by now

Moto said that it would be updated to Gingerbread sometime this year and haven't updated that claim in a while.
A fall update seems to be what people are hoping for, perhaps coming along with an unlocked bootloader. However, we may be able to crack/bypass before then and install it ourselves, so stay tuned
[Also, here come the ragey kids that can't stand people asking questions!]

I think it will sooner than the fall. I bet 6 weeks or less from now.

i bet september - december

At the latest september, but who knows

I read an article that said the Atrix is not getting the Amazon App store update yet because of a pending update from motorola. It didn't mention Gingerbread but when I read it that's what I was left hopeful for.

Gingerbread will be a few months away, so just be patient

In the meantime install gingerblur on the dev section here! Its almost like the real gingerbread! But what about Ice cream!

I'm betting you won't see it until the Photon comes out for Sprint as it launches with GB. Kinda like the EVO won't see it until after the EVO 3D is released. Btw, the Photon is what the Atrix should have been.

Soooo.... you're saying the Atrix should have been the Droid X2? Basically the same phone with a 3" bigger screen running probably the same resolution since it's supposedly a qHD screen as well, and no fingerprint reader? I don't follow you....

I think that is what he is getting at ;D

If that is the case, then he's wishing that it had a lower pixel density.... which if it's also a pentile display, would not be a good thing.

Being concerned isn't any good except to get worked up over nothing. I think we have seen over the last few releases that moto nor carriers listen to complaints about updates. B*tch & whine all ya want, they don't release it until they want to.
And does anybody really think the unlocked bootloader is going to get att's approval to be released? more likely they will wait till the crack\bypass is done and then incorporate their fix for that in the update. That would be less of a surprise than them releasing the unlock.

Don't get your point. I bought this phone with Froyo. Expecting anything else is like jobs and bonuses. Yes they are promised, but you don't always get them. Not happy, sell it and move on!!! Always makes me laugh when people buy things then ***** about what they don't have! If you want promises, I have a deal for you. Give me your life savings and I promise to give you double back in 2 months! Just pretend I am Motorola cos' you trust them!

Yep, the ONLY reason I miss my HTC Aria..

We still wouldn't see much of a difference as gb doesn't utilize the dualcore anyway. Icecream sandwich however will make our phones fly. Most everything coming out is still froyo anyway. So just be patient is see a big push to 2.4 coming our way

Where is Flash 10.1

Ok so now that I've gotten your attention with the o' so "loud and in your face" title of this post, on to the main point. I'm REALLY dissapointed that samsung hasn't stepped up to the plate and included flash with the latest update, leaked or not, 2.1 or not. I'm tired of having to use that piece o' crap skyfire broweser that only works half the time on certain sites, and that's if I lucky. It seems to me that this phone may be destined for the veritable technological garbage dump that so many other phones have been. Samsung has yet to deliver on ANY of the promised fixes, including froyo, although maybe this leaked version of the update isn't the final one, and I'm starting to doubt if we'll EVER see froyo. Is anyone else as pissed off as me? All I know is I'm gonna boot my vibrant for a n1 if something doesn't happen soon. Sorry to any mods or users for the incoherent rant and/or cursing in the aforementioned post, I'm just venting.

They just launched the Fascinate, and now they have their phone on all carriers. Sure, it would have been great to have Froyo by now, or launch the Fascinate with Froyo, but I don't think they'd want to fragment their US Galaxy S so much. I'm sure it will come, especially now that all the phones are out. I have a feeling they are going to develop Froyo for all the Galaxy's at the same time. Whether the carriers decide to push out Froyo as soon as it's ready is another question.

I suppose ur right, and releasing froyo for all the galaxy s phones at the same time would make sense. Now I suppose the real question is, which is closer, cyanogenmod or an official froyo update from sammy?
Seriously I can understand peoples frustrations but venting on the forum isn't going to change a thing. The OTA for Froyo is speculated to be released in September and its still September isn't it? On that note it's only speculated not confirmed. People are in fact working on getting 2.2 to our phones not just Samsung, all I can say is be patient. If you don't want to be patient then shut up and get a G2 when its released if we don't have Froyo by then.

Well I kinda understand the frustration in the OP as flash support means a lot more on the web. I miss watching news clips on CNN website and shows on Hulu on the gorgeous Vibrant screen. But I have no doubt about Samsung's commitment to Galaxy S especially after reading the results of leaked firmware. Instead of losing patience and shouting in forum I would wait for Sammy to roll out a stable Froyo update on this fantastic phone and then enjoy all the goodies. I am sure nobody still has question on whether Vibrant will get Froyo or not after seeing all those videos of european version running froyo. It may be September or October, but I can wait.

Not to be an ass but, why don't you use the advanced version so we can see the CPU gain and not just the lagfix gain. The lagfix makes some things faster and other things slower...the original lagfix that is. I haven't used the voodoo one, so I can't comment on it. I know there is a CPU gain on yours as the most I've seen just with lagfix is in the 2200's. So I assume you have a different rom and/or OC'ing.

Not necessarily. Your custom rom is on top, but a stock Galaxy S is still below a Nexus 1 running froyo. If we want to throw mods in the game, a custom N1 or Droid 2 may beat yours because they have froyo and you don't.

1. if you're on this forum, you should know, you can use flash 10.1 on android 2.1 phones, just limited to HTC ones
2. the galaxy s line does have hacked froyo on it, just look through the forums
3. idc about this comment
anyway, we'll get froyo soon enough, look at the evidence, it's been confirmed already, maybe not for a specific one in a specific country, but hey, once one country is out, others follow quick, besides, the galaxy tab, which is basically the same hardware as the galaxy s, runs froyo, it's probably the bug fixes thats taking them a while, be patient and you'll get it
edit: forgot to add, you can use skyfire, you got a galaxy s, skyfire will not lag at all, its a browser that has full flash capabilities, and actually the video button thing is better than having youtube playing a video straight out, at least you can control it that way, but yea, skyfire, look in tha market

Good news. Can't wait to see it. Would love to just use stock TW 3.0 to speed up my phone (ADW slows it down a bit.)
Considering GingerBread is supposed to drop next week some time....this really kind of blows. We really need a good CM6 then 7!
I can't remember exactly but I think Hero didn't get the 2.1 update until after code dropped for FroYo...Sucks being a version behind. And considering track record its the only OS Update we will see official. I highly doubt we will actually get GingerBread from Samsung/Sprint.

I agree. Everyone getting their hopes up for Gingerbread for the Galaxy S phones, I think are setting themselves up for a big let down. Not just tablets - Just better than 2.1 was with large screens (over 4.5 inchs).
GingerBread should add native video calling, a new UI, and a few other surprises.
And suspected release of Google Music.
Hopefully the ball keeps rolling until it gets to Sprint. Post any rumors you hear on this thread so we can keep track of this "gradual" rollout.

I believe the reports for gingerbread are 4th quarter of 2010. That's probably why everyone thinks it's coming soon. Other gingerbread info was from the last IO (they showed the music player streaming music from cloud) and just general quotes from google engineers about trying to get rid of carrier skins and what not.
Having said all that, didn't they just hire that webOS designer a few months ago? He's supposedly the lead designer for gingerbread, so could it really be coming in q4?
As for support, i think it'll be awhile but it will be supported. I feel like sammy has to support the galaxy line at this point w/ their 5 million handsets sold and the imminent galaxy tab (which they already stated will have gingerbread at some point). This is my first sammy phone and it's pretty apparent people have gotten burned by them in the past, but it would be a customer relations nightmare if they did this w/ the galaxy line.

Gingerbread supports large screens which suppose to go on tablet pads...I dunno where they get the idea that its gonna come out for phones
Maybe it will be a good reason to upgrade galaxy s phones because of the name similarities, now whether they have any similar parts inside I doubt but kind of gives us some of that 'hope' it will come out for phones also.

Google themselves stated that gingerbread will require ATLEAST the N1's specs bare minimum. I read that a LOOOOOONG time ago though so idk...
But ayways, sammys rep for the tab mentioned honeycomb...
What if honeycomb is the start for android tablet OS and gingerbread is the continuation for the phone os?

Honeycomb is both a delicious treat as well as a continuation of the alphabetical nomenclature Google has chosen for their OS's. If they were going to branch off and make a separate lineage for tablets alone, I doubt they would interrupt their alphabetical naming scheme for phone based OS' to do it.

Not another Froyo Post..

This isn't a rant or anything, or I won't try to make it one. But I just came across on Android Central that the Droid is getting 2.2.1.
Now this is just so depressing already that we have a phone that's been out for about 5 months now and haven't seen Froyo (only in Unoffical leaked builds). The Droid has been out far longer, I know that. But Samsung is really dragging their feet. Froyo offically, when it comes out, better knock our ****ing socks off or it was a waste of time to wait for them to deliver.
I'm just saying, this just makes Samsung look that much worse.

There's really no debate that Samsung is WAY behind here. Yes. the Droid has been out way longer, but the Incredible and Droid X haven't and they've gotten Froyo a long time ago. Incredible got it around 8/30 and X around 9/21.
Assuming that Samsung does get it out this year, that puts them anywhere from 2-4 months behind the competition, depending on when they do finally release it.
That's really bad. Sure they didn't promise 2.2 at any particular time, but that doesn't mean I don't factor it in when making my next phone purchase. I hope everyone does. If not, it'll give the manufactures even more reason to withhold updates in the future and try to push new phones instead.
Just heard from Cyanogen's twitter that CM6 is finished for the G2. I'm sure the new my touch isn't far behind.

Yeah, but you seem to be ignoring the fact that the Droid already HAS an official Froyo, and the leaked build is a second generation update.
The Vibrant does NOT have an official build, and the way it's going, the Droid X may have Gingerbread before we get an official Froyo build.
How can you even begin to defend Samsung?
Yes, it is "just" another Froyo post. +1 Ignore!

Geez, people, of course Samsung is going to be behind. Motorola's and HTC's phones all have the same OMAP and Snapdragon cores they've used from the first Droid and Nexus One. No wonder they've all gone to Froyo before Samsung.
How many phones used the Hummingbird before the Galaxy S line? None. But I'll bet you that future updates will come faster now they've got Froyo figured out.

Designing the chip and modifying the software to work with the hardware are two different things. Just because you know the hardware, doesn't mean it's easy to make the software work with it nicely.
Only thing wrong with these threads is they are always full of hearsay. Rarely anyone states fact, just opinion. Who says sammy is holding it back? The leak came from tmo right? this pessimistic view is what makes ppl always have that "omg I have froyo & I hate it, its not perfect.... I want gingerbread" mentality. Life lesson, you'll never be happy with this attitude.
I, myself, try to look at the recent events of the "rumoured nexus s" that engadget posted pics. If this does happen to grace the GS community think of how fast, far, & easily we may make it to 2.3! Im no tech & I may be way off, but id like to think that this would give us the OPEN "NEXUS" development base we'd need to achieve that level of vanilla android base w/ drivers, code & hopefully working gps ;j (minus the new chipset, obviously).
Just be glad that we do have devs who do what they can & hope that sammy doesn't do anything else to screw us. I will be hoping (but not holding my breathe) for a nexus $ gingerbread port.

Exactly. Remember that Froyo was actually built for the Snapdragon, whereas most of the GS hardware is unlike that seen in other previous phones.

Apple crapple, great form and simply reliable yet unbendable device to buy all things Apple dollars via only iTunes. No thanks. I'll take what Samsung doesn't have together.
Yes I've complained before but now I have learned a bit more and I have Froyo.

Gingerbread and HTC

It looks like this time around the Droid x is going to get the gingerbread build before us
Hands-on with Gingerbread on Droid X http://bit.ly/dH0pvV
Does anyone remember that when our evo got froyo, Droid x got it a few weeks later! What you guys think?

I think there is already a thread about gingerbread on the evo here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866245
This thread make it seem like the Droid X and the Evo are both by HTC. Droid X is Motorola.

Really? Ha ha I would never thought of it like that, but man this would really sucked if my Droid x friends get official gingerbread first

Yea it seems that not only are motorola phones gonna beat us...but maybe *gasp* samsung as well. Definitely something to consider when buying HTC it seems.
I'll eventually be a google phone only guy with all the carrier/manufacturer bs going on.

Yeah that's the only reason that I'm reconsidering to get the evo 3D for nexus s but the GPS issue with Sammy's phones piss me off if it would made HTC it would be a non brainier, I know HTC is delaying to update the HTC evo to make people buy the new phones but I don't think is right, at the end I might end up staying with my evo and get the ipad 2 I got apps on my iPhone the looks like.they got ipad support so wouldn't have to buy them again LOL

And this is why I'm leaning towards a Nexus S over the Evo 3D.
i saw this thread just before i made one with the exact same topic. you beat me to it.
ya i agree. samsung has leaks out for some galaxy s already, most of which are still eclair btw, and now motorolla has leaks for the droid x and 2? what the hell is going on here? isnt htc supposed to be the company that comes out with everything first? when gb came out, there was a thread that said htc would update ~ February, motorolla around april, and sammy like summer. this seems completely backwards to me.
and didnt an htc rep say they were working on gb for evo around when nexus s was announced? i kno implementing sense is hard and takes a lot of difficult coding and stuff, but 4 months should be more than enough time for paid professionals.

Exactly what they want, Hell if we can get GB with sense 2.0 I'm sure most people are still going to buy the Evo 3D, it's a dual core phone! Of course most of us will buy it.
I hope the update comes with Sense 2.1. It has some sweet features.

yea a buddy sent me a pic of his droid x with the 2.3.3 build .... i went WTF .. the nexusS it starting to win me over

If they pushed 2.3 for the EVO before the EVO3D was released it would actually make me want to buy the 3D more.
When I go to buy a phone now that I have experience with them.. I will look for a couple major things.
1. Battery life. Let's face it, new features are nothing if your phone dies in 6 hours.
2. Manufacturer/Dev support. If the EVO only gets one update then has to wait until the latest thing comes out before it gets another... then that's a HUGE setback for me, especially if we have a locked bootloader and AOSP roms aren't possible.
Samsung has a horrible rep but the battery life on their phones are reportedly outstanding. They aren't locking the phones down. They did stink it up in a HUGE way with the 2.2 update but if they push 2.3 out ASAP it goes a long way in my eyes.
I HATE HATE touchwiz, but if the phone isn't locked down then it doesn't much matter.
Samsungs phones are locked as well... the evo is too. Motos new phones are encrypted which is the problem.

I think a lot of people thought exactly what I thought. I saw the galaxy getting the official leak and thought what is going on. Htc is usually first on the scene with this type of stuff. Then today I saw motorola getting some love from the leaks. If both companies drop gingerbread before htc it will look bad on htc. They will be on 2.2 and everyone else on 2.3 and with the evo being seen as one of the best, it would be a shame. I hope HTC changes their mind and just drops gingerbread. I will even take Sense 2.0 and nothing else right now. The new features can come later.

Agree I don't care much for gingerbread what I want the most is a 100% working sense 2.0 desing for Evo with 4G , I know myn work in a nnice rom but I'm sure everyone agrees when I say that if HTC realese will be more stable and all features working and let EVO developers get their hand on it

i think...
moto and sammy are doing market clean up and PR repair.. knee jerk reaction to some surveys done last month about which OEM is faster and better support of upgrades/updates. HTC as at the top of most.
so here is moto and sammy trying to get public favor back. before they release their next big phone. and as most knee-jerk reactions.. the implementation will not be stable and full of bugs.. or low in features.
then back to waiting for the fixes and updates for the upgrade issues.
HTC is staying the course with their proven market strategy.
but I do hope that the quick release of gb on moto and sammy will quicken the gb release from htc on evo!

Why couldn't Samsung do this for us?

They can do it for Gingerbread

For all of its greatness, our phone is getting long in the tooth. personally, don't really expect Samsung to support our phone much into the future
Epic... the bastard king.... just dont buy another one of their phones unless they have the OS you expect on it and stable. Im just happy XDA is here to save their asses for those lucky enough to look for it on this one...
I think Samsung is just about done with this phone. They gotta worry about the GSII NOW

Either you're incredibly stupid, or a troll.
In the event that you're just stupid here's the difference:
Dual core version on our processor
Super AMOLED plus (no pentile matrix ruining the screen)
Larger screen
Thinnest Phone in the world (subject to change any day, but still pretty damn thin)
HDMI out through usb
And more.
they did do this just not as public. i got eb13 the day it was pushed OTA but then they discontinued rollouts due to problems. its gonna be awhile before they come out with another good android phone with a keyboard IMO. i refuse to go HTC just because theyre starting to lock down their phones more and more as new models come out. no bueno. i just hope when the nexus s comes out for sprint there will be a quick port for us epic users. i dont plan on getting a new phone for a while. epic does everything i need it to do and some. and for those who complain about the dropped keys, IMPALER has a flashable zip on the development section which IMO completely irradicates the dropped keys issue. i text just as fast as i can type on a CPU and have had not 1 dropped key since.

In your opinion as a dev, has Samsung's support of the Dev community gotten better in the past 2 months, and if so, do you think it will continue to improve, or fall back?
Thanks!

Personally I felt like Eb13 rocked. It was nice to have an official 2.2 even if it was a bit late. I believe they will release GB and as long as it doesn't have any major bugs that will be the end of official development for the Epic. If they do release Gingerbread in a reasonable time frame, my next phone will be a Galaxy S II. If not then I will be looking for an HTC or a Motorola. My next phone must have an unlocked bootloader or I will not buy.
To answer your question, yes I believe hit has gotten better but by how much I am not so sure.
There's a difference between a locked bootloader and an encrypted bootloader.
HTC's phones have ALWAYS been NAND locked, once NAND was unlocked root was achieved. Moto is encrypting their bootloaders, they can't be unlocked without the encryption code.
+1
I think the problem is with Sprint, not with Samsung!
I'm throwing out a theory here. I think the froyo disaster is heavily based on the fact that the Galaxy Series would be best served with Gingerbread, but as of release they couldn't be equipped with Gingerbread. They had Eclair solid at release date and decided to do so uniformly. They also had froyo code, but it's optimized for the HTC hardware it was designed on. The conversion to froyo was bigger than expected and involved moving and/or firing devs that couldn't deal with the change. Frantic motions are made across all Galaxy phones to get froyo out. Now Gingerbread development can be resumed, thus resumed silence. I really think it might be a combo of bad timing on release date and an inability to realize what that would mean in the market. I think Samsung is learning lessons more publicly than other companies are having to. I see people complain about problems with prior Moto and HTC updates, so I know Samsung is not alone in having issues.
