I have given this modem several chances and it has disappointed me everytime. I consistently get 300 kbs less at home on my Airave on 3G. Out of the house it stops downloading in the middle. Speed is up and down. I lose internet off and on. All on 3G. 3G icon sits there but no blue arrows flash. Sometimes I have to toggle airplane mode several times to get 3G going again.
The only good thing I have found is that I can connect to 4G in my living room consistenetly where the EC05 modem was hit or miss. So if you use 4G all the time this may be a good modem for you. for 3G...throw it out.
I had problems with 3G (dropping out and not coming back) and GPS lock when I first flashed the EE03 modem. Second time around GPS locked and I haven't had the dropped 3G issue since that first flash. Not sure what's up with that, you'd think the problems would be consistent. However, im prolly not the best gauge as I have Wifi everywhere I go. I use 3G sparingly. I haven't compared speeds between the two modems though.

Yeah, that's why I gave it the best test possible with an Airave. I get 1.8Mbs with EC05 and 1.5Mbs with the EE03.
3g signal and strength seems a little stronger for me but not by a whole lot. I've been running it without any issues.
3g drops constantly with ee03. Can't wait for a stable gingerbread!

EE03 speed up my connection quite a bit. No issues here, and paired with SRF 1.1.1, my phone is extremely fast.
I'm fine with it. Little difference

For those with EE03, does it write/change your Wimax settings. I changed a bunch of mine while using ED05, namely the min signal strength toconnect. Default was like -89 and I lowered mine to -94. Def able to connect more, but if it doesn't... u can just watch the bat guage spin. Just wondering if increased performance with the new modem may be due to tweaking the settings.
I had changed my 3G extensions... blanked them all out. They got set back to default while flashing a ROM. Never got a chance to evaluate a difference. Are the ports/proxies set up the same with EE03? Maybe try blanking the 4 entries and see if that helps.

No way I love the ee03 modem. I used to have a lot of emails that I would send hang for the longest time. Haven't had a problem at all with ee03 modem. Also 3g speed is so much faster for me as well. Just my opinion.

Have you ever seen this behavior on eb13's and ec05's modem? I have and also dk28's modem. I have this pop up from time to time on various rom/modem combinations and I'm starting to think its some sort of RIL bug or 3g handshake bug, maybe even some sort of permissions bug (really I have no clue tho).
I see this happen from time to time. I'm in a spot that always has 3g, but what happens, it just sits there loading, all the while my 3g icon is dormant, doing nothing. Then out of the blue it goes to 1x and starts working, but only with 1x, then when its done loading whatever, it will bring 3g back and it may or may not repeat the same thing again when I try to pull data. Note; occasionally it will retain 3g, but be hexa slow.....1~10kbps slow.....ouch, that's slow.
That was why I spoke of a modem binge in some other threads. Originally I thought it was sprints network taking a dump in my hand(set). Now after seeing an evo getting 3g right next to me, while mine was stalling and eventually dropped to 1x and also trying every decent modem. I have to believe the problem is in my phone some place.
Only thing I have recently discovered to work is to fix permissions in rom manager, I don't use rom manager for anything, except fixing permissions. The only reason I even tried fixing permissions in rom manager, was after fixing permissions in cwm (3.0.0.6) my phone would (sometimes) get stuck in a boot loop and the only way to fix it would be to clear cache and dalvik cache or restore a backup in cwm. However this modem bug/issue still pops up from time to time, mostly when the phone has been sleeping for 10minutes or more.
I actually think the ee03 modem is pretty good. Just my problems are not.
i wouldnt know lol ive been stuck on dk28 since the usb ports on my laptop are broken

@Epic4gee...Yeah, I got those symptoms but only going to the EE03 modem. Maybe it is a tower/modem issue for me. But the biggest thing is that it is slower on an Airave which should be the best connection I could get with a 30Mbs broadband connection. I could pass off the connection drops as Sprint but not the speed difference.
Yeah 3g sucked for me too

I'm calling malarchy on this thread since this morning I was getting 1.2 mbs/s on 3g, 7.45 mbs/s on 4g and 17.07 mbs/s on wifi with multiple attempts. I think like all devices thios varies by region, modem software and device hardware. It'll never hit that venn diagram where all 3 circles coexist at their highest points. I was probably in some mecca of coverage this morning.

Did you put the EC05 modem back on and test it in the same area? You will get about 200-300 kbs more in speed on 3G. I consistently tested this on the fastest connection possible, an Airave with Broadband 30Mbs connection. EC05 is faster, EE03 connects to 4G better in low signal areas.

I see a major improvement in the signal with the ee03 modem. I live in portland, and went from 2-3 bounding bars to a steady 4. My 4g still disconnects in my apartment, but it is stronger than it was outside my building.

I posted this in the PRI bounty thread but don't want it to get lost and I'm curious what other people's results will be with it.
I noticed something interesting today that may be an Evo bug... So I turned 4G on when I was in traffic on 6th Avenue to run some speed tests... got 8megs, no surprise there... but I left it on... later I was in Denver waiting for my group therapy class and was downloading and browsing and noticed it was flying. Did a speed test and I was getting 1.7-2.1Mbps consistently.
I shut off 4G and went to test later and was back to 500-900 speeds. Turned 4G back on and was immediately back to the 1.7-2.1Mbps levels.
I noticed when I turned on 4G that the 3G data arrows started moving like crazy each time, then stopped.
Can someone test this for me? To do this test you need to be on a tower that you KNOW can handle the faster speeds. I tried it all over the place today and even at home where I can't usually pass 300, I got 600. Turned off 4G and back down to 300. Turned it back on, back up to 5-600. Hit 900 at one point.
Just did a test in my room with 2 bars and got 750... turned off 4G and shut the phone on, turned it back on and got 500 consistently. Turned 4G back on and got 876, 1114, 1140, 865, and 974.
Maybe the PRI update fixed the link between 4G being turned off and slow 3G speeds? Try it and post your results...
Oh and use the Xtremelabs speedtest - speedtest.net is crap.
EDIT: By the way, previous to this, the fastest I ever saw my phone go was 1Mbps - in the same areas I was testing today.
What the F, Batman!?! Definitely makes a big difference. From 75 kB/s to 139 kB/s in one test. Bars of service shot up from 0-1 to a solid 2, also.
Sent from my EVO, the true iPhone killer!
Sorry...cannot confirm. I had no discernible difference with 4G on or off. I have 5 or 6 bars with 500-1000 kbps download and 150-200 kbps upload. Get the same readings on Xtremelabs with 4G on and off. Sorry.

I could be wrong but it seems like I get better data speeds with the 4G radio turned on in a non 4G area.

Went back to the house where I have one or two bars of signal and I still do not see any difference except that my overall speed is about half what it was. But no difference between 4G on or off. I'm running Fresh 3.1.0.1 with stock kernel in a non-4G area.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I ran three speed tests with it off and three with it on and then averaged the max. While it was running, the sustained throughput was almost exactly the same. The averages were:
with 4g off: 1142 down 199 up
with 4g on: 1156 down 217 up
Not much difference.
I think that many people don't get that the 3g speeds are subject to change at any given time, that is why there can be drastic changes in speed. Too many people on this board are succumbing to the placebo effect. Just my observation.

Im just waiting for the fix to the PRI issue hoping that when it comes out people find their 3G speeds remains the same. Now how eventful would that be. Cause maybe its is just a matter of towers cause I'm on 1.34 pri and 3G test still hits 1016 down and 200 up.

Sorry it didn't have positive effects for everyone.
In the Denver area, at the very least, I've confirmed it on my Evo and a coworkers Evo. We regularly are getting two megs now... if we shut off the 4G, it takes about 10 or 15 minutes but we will drop back to 900 and stay there. Turn it back on, back to 2megs.
Just for grins I tried turning on the 4G to test my results.
I'm not rooted and running 2.2
3G alone = 1296kbit/s
4G on (no 4G service) = 1102kbit/s
So, it didn't do anything for me.
As I said, this is for SLOW 3G speeds, meaning >600kbps - with those speeds, you're probably not being affected by any sort of a bug. I had never seen 1Mbps much less 2 on this phone until that fix.
I still doubt the PRI has much of an effect, but perhaps there is hope that you can go back to 1.40 soon and find out.

Hows your phone doing now guys? I was having alot of restarts before the update, atleast 1-2 day and my phone hasnt restarted since the update. Signal strength seems stronger....
Never got any reboot even before OTA
battery life seemed fine, can 't really notice signal improvement
got a useless wifi calling (I am not Tmo user)
and damn it storage is still 1.15GB!
Never had a problem before.
After, I seem to be getting better signal but battery life has gone to the sewer... And I'll never use tether or wifi calling....
Why won't you be using wi fi calling?

Because I get 4 bars of coverage in my house and my office which happens to be in the middle of a middle floor of the building (ie, I get great coverage).
For some reason, the battery does seem to be doing much better so far today, I'll give it a couple more days before I decide to un-do the OTA
from what i have read about the wifi calling is if you use wifi calling internationally, you will be charged roaming. you cant turn the radio off and use just the wifi app when you call, phone has to register on the towers wherever u are
I haven't gotten any improvements. Battery life is the same, reception is the same, I never had random reboots before, I'm still getting FC's about 10 times a day, and I'm still at about 1.1GB for internal phone storage.
I don't have wifi in my house so wifi calling is moot, and I have no need for tethering... hopefully the next update will actually get me something useful.
my G2 seems to last even longer than I did before when I use it on EDGE. And I have a better signal. at my job I get one bar usually and wifi calling is a great plus for me at work.

I seem to have much less drops after ota, and faster data latency

Same issue before and after.. dropped calls, maybe a slight improvement.. maybe.
Waited for the OTA update.. since I get the same issue I asked for a replacement and they're sending one. Love this phone when it works well.
Well I had a ton of random reboots before the update. I had to pull the battery at least twice a day. After the ota I havnt had one reboot so far. I updated yesterday. Will update if problems come back
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
i never had any problems, but the ota seemed to give me H in more areas. Mainly my house, where there is no damn reception at all it would jump from 2 bars edge to 1 bar H. the wifi calling was a blessing for me. i finally know wut its like to have full reception at my home
Before update, I never had random reboots, bad reception, wifi issues, etc.
After update, haven't noticed any improvements. I'm using a different battery so can't say about stock battery
Sent From My G6
Well, got my first power off on Saturday since the OTA, had to pull the battery. And a few hours after while browsing Facebook got the good 'ol reboot to HTC screen. Sigh.
Also, the signal seemed to be better right after the OTA, but over the weekend was having lots of hopping from UMTS/HSDPA to No Service>GPRS>EDGE where it would hang for about 5-10 minutes then go back to UMTS/HSDPA. All while sitting still on a table in my living room, where my myTouch3G 1.2 would stay 3G the whole time.
Because of that I used a lot of WiFi over the weekend. Is it normal for the G2 disconnect from cell service when enabling WiFi and then to not connect back to cell service after disconnecting from WiFi for a good 3-5 minutes? Again, the lame myTouch3G never did that. Either way, time to call T-Mobile and report issues again so I can justify what is likely another return.
So far the battery life improved by at least 3 fold for me with WiFi Calling on preferred. While at work and at home, the signal defaults to WiFi and shuts off the regular cell radio and it is nice.
That said a new development has arisen for the last day or so and I get a connection error to T-Mobile's network. It says that I am currently registered with the T-Mobile Network. Would You like to register to enable WiFi Calling? I hit register and nothing happens. Anybody else encounter this yet?
Before OTA, some random reboots (about 3 times in 2 weeks), pretty week signals at work, in bedroom and part of the way to work. After OTA, no random reboots yet, better signals everywhere I've noticed bad signals before....and, I no longer get that random signals switching from H->E->G->NS... Liking the G2 much more now after the OTA. I personally have not used the WiFi calling or the Tethering, so, no comments there.
Haven't yet seen a poll on this and I am curious to see if this is really affecting as many as it seems, here on XDA.
Edit: It would appear that it is indeed an issue for 9/10 NS4G owners.
I have poor WiFi reception. I had a Hero and Evo, and my GF has a Shift, and all those devices have gotten good Wifi in the bedroom. A desktop and laptop have good reception there too. The NS is hopeless unless I stand near the door and hold it gingerly with two fingers. I ended up adding another AP in another part of the house just to cover the NS.
3G signal acquisition is a little below the average set by the above devices, but not too bad. I have to be in a pretty marginal area not to get 3G, and the Evo and Shift last only a little bit past the NS' range.
I have only just recently acknowledged this as a problem. Since day one my WiFi cuts out and my time without a signal is always high. Not sure if 3G is just poor because of Sprint, but it has also been a huge battery drain.
What's funny is the OTA announcement does not seem to state that they are working on 3g issues. It is a little unclear, but that 5th bullet point seems to say they are addressing 4g radio issues only!
re:
Hopefully they increase its stability as a result of fixing other areas of the radio? Longshot, I know.
Wifi is the suck. I have had less than full strength 1ft away from the router.
Not sure if it is this phone or Sprints cup and string network but I constantly get random periods of no internet/data throughput. Mainly on 4g. Going through one right now. 4g connects but there is just zero data tranfered. All webpages time out etc. Now on Sprints totally awesome dialup on vitamins 3g network.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
For me, all the above. Call me pessimistic but I'm kinda doubting that software will fix a poor radio. Has anyone ever actually experienced an update solving a bad radio? I was actually considering getting a new evo 4g with the extended battery and call it a day. As more days pass by, it seems my network performance gets worse. The times where I'm not getting any data throughput are getting longer. It was annoying for awhile but now this really pissing me off! Cycling airplane mode and rebooting the phone is getting to the point where it doesn't fix anything. Its a waste of time. Like many other people are saying, I love the phone but using it for its main purpose, a phone, it is utterly horrible! Most of the time I have very little signal on the tower, if any at all. I keep saying I'm not going to buy Samsung phones anymore but I still do and continue to get burned by them.
Weird. Now that you mention it I thought the same thing. It just gets worse.
When I first got this phone I could sit on 4g all day long and the internet was just there. 3g too. 100% reliable network activity. Then about a month ago the random periods of no data throughput started happening. First it was both 3g and 4g, now it is just 4g. The 3g speeds are a joke. You can't stream **** with this phone on 3g without skipping and buffering. 4g streams fine but you still have to worry about the data throughput hitting a 2hr or longer brick wall of uselessness.

If the next update comes and it doesn't fix anything, then we should be allowed to have the device replaced.
My guess is that it is a combination of our crappy radios and sprint is still having wide spread data issues. My gf has my epic and even though she gets more signal and less data loss than I do, she's still experiencing network issues. About an hour ago, I just got a bunch of responses from her that were morning and afternoon and they came in all at once. I sent an email and a text in both stock SMS and Google voice a little while ago and haven't heard anything back yet. Sprint must know they're having network issues. It seems like it has been going on for three weeks now and today is really bad. There are times that I think dial up is faster than the speeds I'm getting when it does work.
Woohoo. Just got 4g data throughput back. Only down for 4 and 1/2 hours today. All good till tomorrows outage. *eyeroll*

I noticed I just got 3g back.
3G and 4G are great! only WiFi needs to be touched up. I use 3G at the home (averaging 2,000 kbps DL) so WiFi isn't needed unless I'm downloading huge ROMs or other files.
Still, I prefer having a working WiFi for friend's houses and other locations.
My girlfriend and I both have Nexus S 4G's so I decided to update mine and leave hers at 2.3.4 until I ran some tests. Here is what I concluded after about an hour of testing at home:
Signal strength was improved by around 10db
3G download speeds were 60% faster
3G upload speeds were 40% faster
It's important to note that the Speedtest.net app does not work properly on the Nexus S 4G. To get accurate results, you should use the Speakeasy Speed Test through your phone's web browser, or, tether your computer to your phone and run any speed test from your computer.
I haven't had a chance to test 4G but I am anticipating a big improvement.
Marco
PS. Sorry for the crappy photos taken on my old Evo 4G
It's impossible to rate 3G speed performance increases based off a radio update accurately. Sprints 3G network is such a pile of crap you could get 1mb a second one minute
and this garbage the next.
I tested it a few times over an hour period and got the same results. Beyond that I don't have the time to waste running further tests.
Sorry to hear you get crappy speeds.
did you do any testing on wifi signal strength?
I was getting 2.6 mbps dl at home before update. 60% of that would be crazy. Im on miui atm and idk if im going to update if it blocks tether.

Do you have the older airave that is only 1x data? If so, it's displaying the 3G bars when not using 1x (either sms or call). You'll never miss a call due to signal if that's the case. It used to be that way for me when I had the older unit (just got the newer 3G airave, and now it's full bars all of the time).

It's important to note that the Speedtest.net app does not work properly on the Nexus S 4G. To get accurate results, you should use the Speakeasy Speed Test through your phone's web browser, or, tether your computer to your phone and run any speed test from your computer.

Why is that the case?
2.3.4
3G 300kbps-1000kbps depending on location
4G max 5.5Mbps
Wifi max 6Mbps
2.3.5
3G 500kbps-1200kbps depending on location
4G max 7.5Mbps (!!!)
Wifi max 8Mbps
It seems like to me that one person says it helps and then the next says it sucks so I think I'm just going to leave well enough for now because i have mine on Boost and really don't feel like setting up data and mms again...wouldn't be hard but from the looks of things it really doesn't look like its worth it.

I'd also like to know. I'm currently on LA6 and it works, however there is still something left to be desired because my coverage is really patchy.
I'll try some other modems out and see. BTW I'm in the northeast.
I'm in Chicago. would also like to know of the best modem..but i'm running the new miui beta 4 rom. this thing is beautiful. tied for best with PA
In Chicago Also....For me, by far it's LR1.
Also I get the best results using the 'phone' apn Internet setting
Hey so I'm stuck at pepboys getting an oil change (terrible service btw...but wrong forum.) Anyways, I've had intermittent cell phone and data reception here in Boston MA using LA6 for the past few weeks. Choppy voice calls and extremely flakey reception (for instance no phone reception while watching the fireworks last night on the Charles River.)
While waiting for my car I decide to surf the interwebs-of course. My signal bar continuously jumping from H to 3G to E and "page not available" from my browser. If I did get service it was very slow. I decided to try out a new modem. I managed to download LB2 and install it. I'm very happy to say my internet is startlingly faster and my reception indicator has stayed at H the whole time!
YMMV but I'm happy to report this might be the holy grail for me! I'll update my post when I get more time with it at home where I have had very consistent crappy reception.
Weird thing is my status still shows the same signal strength though...But the speed difference is definitely not just in my head. However, I can't say if the reboot didn't also play a role in my reception.
UPDATE: Besides the fact that I sat at Pepboys for 1 hour and 45 minutes for a simple oil change that I had an appointment for, I am completely stoked. I'm home now, a place where with LA6 I got nearly zero data reception, and I just pulled up the full desktop Amazon site in a few seconds on LB2! This is fantastic!
