My sister is looking at a new phone. She wanted the iphone 4 but with the data plan change she is not sure if she wants to deal with it.
She was talking about switching companies with me, and as long as i can get my unlimited data plan then i'm switching to verizon.
She wants something good, doesn't know which phone though.
both have 1ghz processors and android.
Can't find ram specs on the droid x but i know it's 512mb on the htc.
Anyone have a good comparison and what do you guys thing. I just haven't been in the cell phone scene for almost a year. I am getting ready for a new phone in oct/nov so i am getting into it now.
If you're not doing it for a few months yet, then just wait for a better phone. The Samsung Galaxy S (instantly rootable, and fully open bootloader) is the best phone that is about to come out if you like to have root. The Droid X won't have root for 4+ months according to Birdman, and the bootloader may never be cracked. A real **** move by Motorola.
re
I was all set on the moto Droid x, but now...
The Samsung Fascinate is looking really freaking good.
In the side by side reviews that i have seen, the samsung has the best screen that i have ever seen. Plus its rootable, plus it has a faster humming bird 1ghz processor, the same clock speed but in test it shows to be much faster overall.

I don't know about that? Where are these tests? I was under the impression they are very comparable in speed. I personally like Moto's build quality... even if I can't reflash it. The Fascinate looks like the case is plastic, which just isn't as good as a full metal case.
Between the Droid X and the Droid Incredible, I must say the Droid X, its a powerhouse...
This is for my sister. if it was me, the samsung coming out looks amazing but I am not getting android. Sorry.
She will never do anything for the bootloading or rootable options. She is not into the phone stuff like i am, and wouldn't be able to do it from her technical knowlege. And she is looking right now, can't wait at all, so samsung is out of the question at the moment.
Any other advice would be great. thanks to all that have posted already.
For a girl, the Droid Incredible or wait for the Samsung Fascinate.
Yep. See how she likes the Droid X in the hand first... just drive to a Verizon store and compare the two phones. There's also the problem of the Incredible's availability, but Sense wi definitely be more friendly than Ninjablur for the average user.
I have both and the droid x if far. Better. The incredible battery life sucks. I been using droid x for 11 hours and it still at 23% on the battery. That is with heavy use.

I have the incredible, droid and the droid x. My opinion is the x even thou the incredible is rooted the x is a whole lot better then both of them combined.
Now with root it will happen with the X and it will be amazing

Motorola chargers, I wish we could get a universal charging synching option from the industry. Why is it that the USB cord that works perfectly for every other device I have owned will charge and sync but not with Droid X. I just hate the length of the stock cord.

Are u sure that u had a DI prior to this phone? When i went into adb yesterday to gain root on my X (thanks Birdman!), I used the usb cord that came with my DI. In fact, that DI cord is the only cord I've used to charge and transfer files with on my X.
I have found the X's battery to be a solid improvement over the DI; however, it is still rather easy to drain a full battery over the course of the day. I think it's important to remember that people tend to go through signifcantly higher amounts of data when they get a new toy to play with. Even then, I would say that the X's battery life is slightly better than the HTC 2150 mah extended battery that I bought for my DI.
One area that I've found that the X shines is graphics processing. For example, Need for Speed Shift on the X is by far the the most complete, satisfying gaming experience that I've had on a mobile phone (I dont know what Apple is going to do when even games are superior on the android platform).
While not everyone digs the size of the X, I absolutely adore the large screen. The keyboard on the X is the best I've used on a smartphone, and having the ability to switch to Swype is sweet. And for a movie buff like myself, it is sooo nice to be able to transfer movies from my laptop to my X without first having to convert them
Basically, I am really digging the X. However, the DI is a damn nice phone as well. I personally prefer Sense to Blur, and the DI is extremely polished. Being able to DL custom Roms is invaluable. And although it's completely Motorola's prerogative to design their phone as they wish, there's something about efuse and the encrypted bootloader that chaps my hide.
I had pretty much decided to return my X and go back to my DI, until Birdman gained root access to the x yesterday. Having wireless tether, Titanium, shell access, etc. are hugely important to me. However, i am still not sure if this is enough to compensate for the inability to flash ROMs. Damn, why does the X have to have that damn bootloader?
inc is better. ive played with the x numerous times, but i never wanted to switch. its just not the same. the dinc is one of a kind.

i guess it is all preference. in my opinion, the dinc is durable when it comes to modding. ive only tried the x for a couple of minutes, so i wouldnt know how the x is. i do have to say, the x is more of a multimedia and social networking phone, and the inc is more business like.

actually, just for the record. the droid x doesn't have a full metal case.. just the battery door is metal.. much like the Samsung captivate on at&t. but as far as i know you are correct about the Samsung fascinate being "all" plastic. but to put in my two cents. switching from the Dinc to the DX. i am very unsatisfied with the DX slow and laggy UI and the screen looks good and big and clear.. but the colors suck and the contrast ratio is terrible. one of my biggest issues with screens, that of tv, phone, monitor, etc., is being able to see the back light shining through..of which my DX does. So i will be switching to the Galaxy S for that S-AMOLED. but thats just my opinion.
P.S. The Droid X is a really great phone. Just not for me.
The incredible over saturates the colors by over 30 percent. The Droid X is only off by like 6%.

I just want some opinions! Im about to get a new phone and I am leaning towards the Incredible because I currently have the Eris and its been great. I really like HTC. But I wanted to see what you guys have to say... The price is the same for both if I upgrade.... Never really been a fan of Motorolla but seems like a viable option... Anyone got the time to answer

I've compared the two phone and for me, other than the battery life, the Incredible wins hands-down. I think the screen is WAY too big on the X to use as a nimble one-handed device. The display on the DI is much better than the X.
...Plus, ever since my StarTAC experience, Motorola can kiss my hairy donkey.
Motorola makes great phones. The inclusion of a separate gpu is awesome. That being said I would take my incredible over the Droid x any day of the week. The sense UI is much much better then motoblur, the screen is wayyyy wayyy to big. Performance wise its great, but do u really want to always be carrying a psp in ur pocket?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
youve both mentioned the same the same concerns I have.. I dont want a brick in my pocket.. I love the eris for alot of reasons but size is a big thing... I have friends with the moto droid and I cant stand having it in my hand... i was thinking i might be able to get used to it though.. have either of you rooted... and was it a hard process.... i rooted my eris and had no problems doing it but it makes me nervous getting a new phone and messing it up...
In my relatively short experience with the Android platform, I have gone (in the following order) through the following phones:
HTC Incredible
Moto Droid X
Moto Droid 2
HTC Incredible
I got the Incredible initially as a parting gift to myself for being fed up with BlackBerry. I was immediately wowed by the phone. It's speedy, takes great pictures, great call quality and I've experienced no reception issues.
Then, the release of the Droid X. The phone is huge, however the lightweight of the device offset this and didn't bother my hands once I got used to it. After my developing obsession with development and modding had fully set in, I became upset with the phone because of the heavily locked bootloader. The fact that the Verizon store I purchased it from said I'd have 2.2 in 2 weeks from the launch date (never happened and still hasn't happened) didn't help.
I was happy with the phone, however, the pictures that it took seemed overly grainy and I wasn't that impressed with the 720p quality which seemed too choppy and not as smooth as I had expected. Call quality again was excellent, however the speaker volume seemed to lack (compared to my Incredible). I was not a fan of ninjablur either.
Then the Droid 2 was released. I was on a mission to get an officially released version of 2.2. I figured that the original Droid had been a hit, and all the guts under the hood were revamped for what should seem to make an amazing phone. WRONG. Slow as hell, choppy, negligible call quality, rampant overheating which crippled your ability to use the phone etc. (if the Droid 2 performance is what people can expect when the X gets it's upgrade, I feel bad for you guys)
So now, I'm back to my Incredible that I stuffed in the drawer while going through those upgrades. I'm happier with a camera that comes with a better camera, snappier operating system, S-OFF and a plethora of customization options. The 2150 battery gives me between 2-3 days of no charge, and I'm happy with my loud speaker volume as well. Plus, after installing the 2.2 RUU that was recently released, I'm happily enjoying solid Linpack scores in the mid to high 30's, fixed bugs etc.
I say get the Incredible, I believe it to be a better phone all around. And you'll appreciate the wide range of options you have for the phone as well.
i am also trying to choose between the two. i'm leaning to the incredible because i think htc makes better phones and i love sense (a lot) but the reason i'm considering the x is the screen is so big. i think thats really great, and it has swype and an hdmi and stuff. but i feel like besides the screen being smaller on the inc, htc makes everything work much better than motorola
Used to own an incredible, had s-off on it, SkyRaider and everything, then gave it to my girlfriend and got a Droid X, i wouldnt go back
Ive attached a benchmark of my rooted Droid X running Froyo, take a look below...
Also the bootloader thing has been bypassed... we have clockworkmod recovery now and can flash custom roms, also one thing that should be known about motorola is that they make one HELL of a radio for there devices... In my house my HTC Incredible used to fluctuate between 2 and 3 bars.. mostly on two... with my Droid X its been dead nuts 100% full signal the whole time and dosent budge.. and i was using the 2.15 radio in my inc but had the same issue on the original 1.0 baseband

While I can say I'm impressed with the Quadrant Scores, being that there are known flaws in the system that can be tweaked to yield higher Quadrant benchmarks means (as simple as changing a numerical value in the build.props, and I'm not accusing you of such just to be clear) that it can no longer be used as a reliable benchmarking system... especially if you are not using dead stock software that has been cooked, pulled or whatever.
It is also well known that "Bars" are not reliable indications of service reception. Holding my Droid X and Incredible right now as I type; the Droid X is showing full bars at -98dbm, while the Incredible is showing 2 bars -95dbm.
Just saying that's all
My incredible used to get anywere from 85 to 98dbm in my house, my X gets 72dbm, the X will always score higher on quadrant simply because its just plain got a better processor, however slight of an advantage it may be, its still something... but the major thing is the seperate GPU that throws it worlds ahead in graphics processing.. on quadrant in the first 3d demo where you are walking through the tunnel i get consistent 28 FPS.. even while turning the corner which is where it normally drops, it dosent drop on mine
I'm not saying the incredible is a bad device, as I used to own one.. However just an fyi my droid x scored a 1200 on quadrant right out of the box it was the first app I installed, and that was running 2.1

And I'm not knocking the Droid X in anyway. Both phones are incredible (yeah yeah I know its a pun) devices. Both just fill different niches in the Android community.
Which I why I love and am obsessed with Android. No one-device-fits-all environment!
Eat **** Apple.
You may also want to consider the Samsung Fascinate that is getting ready to come out. Slick UI, Hummingbird processor is extremely fast, has a seperate GPU, and a beautiful screen. I also think 4" is the perfect screen size. just my $.02

The bootloader is still keeping you from running a custom kernel, correct?
The X has a nice GPU (My friend has one), BUT, the screen compared to an Dinc's screen is like analog vs digital. The Dinc's screen is so much more vivid, colorful and detailed than the X's. I wouldn't trade for the X.
Samsungs fascinate looks great. But if i recall from the images..its a 3Giphone look a like..Only the captivate looks sleek in my opinion and there are some serious GPS issues plaguing the Galaxy S phones right now...and lets face it..samsung hasnt been the best of companies when it comes to keeping up with upgrades..sure 2.2 is probably insight, but will they support gingerbread? hmmm. HTC/Moto on verizon's network is a win either way. They have CDMA down.

Let me get this straight. So you're saying that the Droid X is a better phone because it scores higher on a benchmarking application? That is your only justification for switching?
I really appreciate all the feedback. But I think Im leaning incredible. I just cant help but like HTC's product....
So im going to verizon and needed some help to make my decision. Which would you choose after having used the droid 2 for a while. Do you feel that not having access to all the custom roms like the Droid 1 had is a big downer? I am coming from a Nexus One, and loved messing with all the roms.
Depends what you care most about. Currently we can theme, and we can use root apps. We still have roms (kind of); we don't get new kernels, but there is still a lot of work on the main functional stuff you use everyday. I think there are at least two or three efforts currently going on to get us a vanilla experience without blur. The different kernel stuff isn't really a deal breaker at all. I cannot think of a feature I need that I would get with a new kernel that I am not getting with root apps and standard apps from the market.
I think the Droid 2 hardware is great, and the Android platform is very flexible to give me anything I want. I was deciding between the Incredible and Droid 2 when I got my phone. I got a Droid 2.

Thanks for the response. Really wish this choice was more of a nobrainer. Droid 2 could have been perfect if they kept the bootloader like the original droid and if they improved the camera and video capabilites. I can live without the custom roms as long as I can get rid of blur completely. Just hope the update to gingerbread happens, and moto doesnt just forget about this phone.
I owned an N1 from the day it came out until the day the Droid 2 came out, so about 7 months. I messed with all sorts of custom ROMs and while it was fun to get that new phone feeling constantly, I don't miss it at all. As said already, between Froyo, root and all of the great apps that have been developed over the last year, there really isn't much you can't do on the Droid 2.
I say make your choice based on hardware; the software is a wash. I wanted a keyboard in a tight package and liked the brightness and higher res screen of the Droid 2 compared to the N1. Couldn't be happier with my choice.

You made my decision alot easier. Looks like I will soon be on the droid 2 forums. First thing to go will be the motoblur, and will put ADW on it.
To the OP, I was on Verizon for a month before realizing that in my area their 3G coverage just wasn't any good. I used both a Droid 2 and an Incredible during that time. I loved the D2's hardware, it just looked and felt beautiful. The Incredible not so much, very plasticky and tacky looking. BUT...I would take the Incredible over the D2 unless you absolutely have to have a keyboard. The Incredible's 8mp camera kills the D2's and is even an upgrade from your N1. And the Incredible's Amoled display is nicer too. I still like the D2 and miss the feel of it in my hand, but I would go with the Incredible at the same price.

FWIW, the d2 has an AOSP build now...
I currently have a Samsung Fascinate, and while I love its superior screen and hardware, I'm not too confident in Samsung's commitment to this phone. I am toying with the idea of exchanging my phone for a Droid X, but I have a couple of questions. I am aware that the X has a locked down bootloader, and playing around with it is a highwire act. Is the original sbf I think it's called available so if something goes wrong you can restore it to stock? I recall Motorola forcing sites to remove this file. Also, if that is no longer available, what safeguards are generally used when modding? Thanks for your time and consideration.
The file is available here...
http://rootzwiki.com/
...if you are even considering an X- I would grab it.
Without this file- there aren't many safeguards. You can create a nandroid backup- but in certain cases you can't even get into recovery to load your back up. In that situation if you do not have the SBF file all is lost.
If you really like doing mods to your phone- I would not buy the X. I have one and I am sorry that I did not wait for a phone that can run "real" custom roms - as in custom kernels and all.
The phone is pretty awesome as is. But I like to do stuff to my phone.
The x has custom roms and kernels I am running simply stunning x and 1.2ghz overclock so what do you mean no customization. I had the fascinate and the rims half the time messed the phone up and the kernels were no good. The Droid x is the most popular phone everybody is working on it. So I think it is the best phone.

I have been using smartphones since 2003 and this is my 3rd android phone. First I used the Hero, then the droid 1. That phone really set the bar for me in terms what a phone can do with mods working on it. To the previous poster, I'm afraid that the setup of the droid x keeps it from truly having a custom kerna, and the kernals on the fascinate now are pretty good. I guess I will have to sit on this phone and deal with Samsung. Hopefully they do right by the millions who have purchased this phone, but they may already be preparing the replacement for this phone in a couple of months. I appreciate your input, but it looks like the droid x just may not be the phone for me. Thanks and take care.

Please understand that the Fascinate's screen and hardware is NOT superior to the DX. I was in the store comparing them. Whereas the SF's screen is super amoled, the colors being more vibrant, the screen is kind of dark especially in sunlight. Me? I need bright. Dx does it. Also, the DX is metal and therefore more durable, imo.
Me? I'm running it overclocked consistently at 1.35 ghz and have a custom rom/theme. I love it. It's a great. Don't hesitate to get it.
I was faced with the choice for my daughter's new smartphone. The SF was never in the running. I didn't like the plasticky feel and the dim screen. So, I got the Incredible for her, kinda a compromise. Good luck. Feel free to ask more questions!
I am not flaming or trying to start a thread fight. Having said that... As an ex incredible owner, now facinate with reception issues, I too have looked at the X to fulfill my needs. The X's screen being the deal breaker. I have and did again today mess with my friends X and the post above about the facinate having a dim screen is hogwash. If the X came anywhere close to having as nice, crisp and non washed out looking display I would buy it in a heart beat but it doesn't. Everything else is great on the X but after owning the best display made I can't go backwards. Infact, the inc display is better (imo) And to the gentlemen above, you couldn't have bought a better phone for your daughter... (imo)
Edit:
I'm going with the X due to reception issues with my facinate...

I've been a lil bit happy w/DX but w/the lockdown of bootloader, The DX may be down for the count for sometime to go. I have a local guy here that wants to trade for the DX w/his Dinc. I need my XDA fam's advice..I don't care about the HD issh for DX and I think both have great Cameras and nice Screens..Plus HTC widgets baby..Tru HTC Sence..Play nice to eachother now ok and thanks for all the input
I would keep the droid x...but that's just me. I've played with both and the incredible seems tiny now and the x normal size but remember its your phone not ours..hope I helped

that's what's killing me, the bigger screen but the HTC Sense is just so smooth.
I have the Droid X now, and had the DInc when it launched in April. Sweet device, but the battery they gave you wouldn't last long and adding a decent Seidio battey was bulky as it got.
I even had purchased the DInc again a few weeks ago after I sold my iPHone and it came down to screen size and ability to type easily. I opted to try the D2G, and quickly returned that the physical keyboard was again too small for me.
I just find the DX screen to be easier to type on, great for GPS, Movies, Games etc. Sure I like the smaller screen when it comes to fitting in my pocket, but the screen is so worth it. I just got the Seidio Holster and Rugged case so I am ready to go.
The bootloader issue is not much trouble actually, as we've been able to do all sorts of things with the x that once required a custom kernel. The only thing we can't do is put in a custom kernel, but ocing, voltage changing, ROMs, themes, etc are already possible on the DX.
