no sd card for US version ever? - Xoom General

I read an interesting discussion on a European Xoom forum.
As the US Xooms are Google Experience devices and the sd card is not in the HC specs, there is a risk that the slot will never be activated. In Europe the 3.1 updaste is said to already include the sd slot support, but provided from Moto.
Hdtvpower

Considering that HC seems dwtined to be sidelined in favor of ice cream sandwich, that seems possible.
What we may want to start asking is if the Xoom will be able to install ice cream sandwich, and if that will be an official update.

European Xooms have sd support? What? First time I'm hearing this. I know that Transformer has sd support, but that was done by Asus.

I already have it with the custom kernel so I don't mind waiting for ICS to have it officially enabled.

What forum that would be?

I'm pretty sure that this is 100% wrong. The tablet was built and marketed with the slot for the SD card, so they can't very well say that they won't officially support it. (P.s. look in the xoom dev section under tiamat kernal, it allows for SD card support on xoom)

I just picked up a Xoom in AU and it has a microSD expansion slot near the SIM card.

Wait, what? Doesn't work officially? Hmm.

Its coming.... Motorola can't afford everyone returning there xoom. Not just the money but there reputation in the electronic world.

It is this thread and there is guy on it (pOOB73) who is already testing the EURO version of 3.1. He can use inetrnational keyboards (BT bug) and he mentions that Moto includes sd support into it.
For what it is worth.
He also mentions the Google experince device issue and that Moto has no control over the US updates not supporting the sd.
hdtvpower

I'm thinking motor would be wide open for a class action should they end up not supporting the sdcard slot. My Iconia's slot worked fine out of the box on hc 3.0
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App

This is not motorola, but Google, google has to send the update to officially support SD. They said they will, so I'm sure it will....soon. Seeing how fast the Xoom gets the updates, xoom owners will be the first to do so.

What I believe he was alluding to is if you root and install the Tiamat kernel and custom recovery, you will have access to your SD card.

Android 2.4 and price for Vibrant 4G

In this video by PhoneDog it shows some news on the Vibrant 4G and iPhone4 in white and Android 2.4
Yep you heard right 2.4, could it be IceCream? I'm still wondering if I can return my Vibrant and get this new Vibrant 4G that would be pretty sweet. That or I can just install a FFC which I have been considering the last couple weeks. Any suggestions on what I should do?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CajIiZeso0&feature=feedu
I really dont think a 4g vibrant Is worth it. It really is a loss of storage space. As far as the ffc they say its pretty easy to do and the camera cost about 20 bucks.
Ill wait till we get the lg optimus 2x or something close to that.
That is it, i'm waiting till 2.5 comes out!
Everytime I get into the new, another 'new' comes out!
LOL, and kudos to him making that new speedy video. "...Nice sweater, moving on! Phone, Box, unboxing, here's the magic!" LOLOL
Honeycomb is going to be 3.0 not 2.4.
From what I've heard (twit network) 2.4 is not icecream and just is an incramental update. Honeycomb has a feature of resizing apps to work on a larger screen and makes it look all perrdy. The update gives that same image scaling to phones. Just paraphrasing what I heard.
As for the 4g? go for it if you can. Remember no external sd card. You will be stuck with 16GB internal. If that isn't a problem go for it. I miss a working gps..... Tmo has a 15 day return policy, but walmart and target have been known to honor thier 90 day return policy (to match their stores policy). If you got it from there.
The 2.4 will be a sequel to gingerbread not ice cream.
Says engadget
2.3->2.4 is the same as 2.0->2.1. Just different features and UIs
Its 16gb external. Not internal

Cant wait for this to be released, i think im going to pick one up.
From what I have read, 2.4 is honeycomb, at least the mobile version that does not re-size. 3.0 will be Tablet honeycomb with a lot of extra tidbits that are only useful on a Tablet.
Mark me, I could be wrong, but it is what I believe to have read.
16 GB external, will you be able to upgrade to say a 32?

Current literature is pretty clear about there being 1GB internal and 16GB external. I assume they removed the int 16 for a more power hungry modem? just a guess.

galaxy s gets gingerbread before atrix?

http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/16/...pdate-now-rolling-out-across-europe/#comments
kinda sad that a phone thats been out for almost a year is getting gingerbread before the atrix. i think its ATT's fault. they seem to delay OS updates, at least they did for the captivate. both rogers and bell got froyo months before att. maybe ATT wants to make sure all the features it wants disabled are in working like wifi hotspot?
True. Im already regretting buying my Atrix, too late to return it though. But also Motorola was asking for beta testers to sign up to test 2.3.

Looks like this is for unbranded galaxy s phones though. In the US it takes longer cause the carriers are modding the OS to add all their useless bloatware crappola an it's usually the carrier that pushes the updates not the manufacturer. But hopefully with the update to enable hsupa we get a couple of extra goodies.

it makes sense that the phone that's been out for a year gets it first....
since google released the 2.3 source code, the company has been doing nothing but preparing an update most likely. motorola however, needed to iron out kinks in their initial 2.2 release before they can consider developing a 2.3 OS, and then allowing carriers to modify it to your liking.
obviously you didn't think about what has to be done to come up with a polished 2.3 update before it can be released as an official OTA update. you really can't fault motorola for this not being out yet. it takes a lot of time, testing, and effort to release a finished product.
Raybond, I agree with everything you said, but its hard to cut Motorola any slack for this when the phone should have come with 2.3 in the first place. On top of that they lock the bootloader so we cant get 2.3 working on our own either....

well, the problem is that they probably started dev for the atrix's OS before 2.3 was released, so it would have been even more work, and probably would have caused delays in their release of the phone if they had shipped it with 2.3
I know locked bootloader is a massive drag for 3rd party dev, but you really can't fault moto for any decisions they've made with this phone other than that.

actually you're not skipping honeycomb....
honeycomb is a totally different series in Android OS, tablet-specific series to be precise (3.0)
So, gingerbread is 2.3, and ICS is 2.4. Also, rumour has it that ICS will have full dual-core support, so it would make logical sense for Moto to not waste any time with 2.3 and go straight for dev in 2.4

ice creme sandwich is a blend features of both gingerbread and honeycomb made specifically for phones. you will not be seeing honeycomb on an android phone backed by google. that one reason google is not releasing honeycomb source yet, they dont want to have honeycomb phones out there.

whether Asus Transformer prime (on ICS) will support SDHC or SDXC ?
Same here, I just picked up Asus Transformer Prime (32G). Upgraded it to ICS 4.0.3 successfully.
I wanted to buy a micro sd card for expanding my storage, but then got baffled by the various models/variants available..
I found one SDHC and another one SDXC. Reading about them enlightened me a bit, but I didnt find any references to which one of these my tablet will support.
So, asking out loud here, has anyone tried either of these ? and whats the experience ? anyone who has tried sdxc, is it worth the extra money ??
please share experience.

I'm also very interested in this.
From SanDisk's website, they have Ultra microSDHC (class 6) and Ultra microSDXC.
Looking through the XDA wiki, many of the cards listed are older generation.
From Wikipedia
SDHC host devices will accept SDXC cards that follow Version 3.0, since the interface is identical

I would suggest a lower class (2-4) if possible, as higher class (6-10) are oriented usually around burst speed not fast seek times (as lower class cards are). In any case, thank you!

Also I might just hold on a little longer until they get LTE here:
Sprint has been rolling out its 4G LTE network, beginning in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Atlanta, Kansas City, and Waco, Texas. More cities are expected to get the release soon. Next up, Sprint plans to bring its 4G service to Baltimore, Gainesville, Ga., Manhattan/Junction City, Kan., and Sherman-Denison, Texas, before Labor Day.
The service provider expects to complete its 4G LTE network rollout by the end of 2013.

Oh and BTW as if to re-iterate my point about manufacturers still making QWERTY KB Devices. Found THIS on the Android Police website.
Just stumbled across THIS , apparently they want a good launch. They're offering it for $150 if you Pre-Order.
Oh and yet another QWERTY KB Device from Sprint announced HERE.
The 3 keyboard phones that are going to launch are:
Kyocera - Low
LG - Medium
Motorola - Top
Considering that is 3 keyboard phones I somehow doubt sprint is going to release another one for at least a year unfortunately
To add to that, an HTC keyboard phone is unlikely because HTC has been pretty much anti keyboard for a while. The only keyboard phones they made were ones they were contracted in advanced to make.
Also notice a coincidence in HTC heavily dropping in profit ever since they stopped making keyboard phones >.>

Sad to see HTC moving away from KB phones. I owned a TP2 and an Evo Shift and loved them both.
I really like the Photon and will PROBABLY order it but have two concerns:
1. Battery. Says "embedded" and it's only 1780mAH. A little small and not replaceable??? Galaxy SIII has 2000mAH and it's swappable.
2. Memory. Didn't see an SD card slot and internal memory is 8GB. Is that correct? Hope not...
From what I've read 8gb is correct on the internal memory but it does have a micro sd slot. I didn't see what that can be expanded to but 32gb is pretty standard. As for the 8gb internal memory, I have a 2gb partition on my micro sd card and I've never come close to using even 1gb. Just sayin'.

Edit: according to this it does expand to 32g.

Thanks for the clarification. The Sprint site did not show an SD slot so that's good news! Still concerned about the "embedded" battery. I like the option of battery swapping when I need to and most android phones support this capability.

Well if it will handle a 32GB SD Card according to them. Then it should handle a 64GB SD Card with no issues. Reason I say this is because I've already run a 64GB SDHC Micro SD Card on the Shift for over a month with Zero Issues. Same goes for the OG EVO 4G. The card wasn't mine, so I had to give it back :crying: . But it's nice to know that it works on the Shift, and EVO :cyclops: .

The Embedded Battery shouldn't be to much of a concern. Not at all Happy about manufacturers moving to that type of BS. But as was already proven on the EVO LTE, it can be removed. Just not something that's simple anymore. Seems like just another excuse for you to have to take the Device to them . Which is total BS .
