There is a GUI that I just ran across that was posted I think while I was on the site. Basically someone has created a GUI for GladRoot4.2. Of course GladRoot was created here but there is now a GUI for those of you that don't know what your doing but want root
The site I was on is: android-advice.com
I have had the site above in my reader for a while and it seems like they occasionally have good stuff. They are no XDA but seem to keep up to date with things pretty well.

Hello everyone. I haven't been able to maintain this beginners' guide, but I highly recommend the following two threads:
Droidstyle's guide has anything and everything you need to get rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070
User jawman27 has put together a glossary to help new users understand rooting terminology:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513143
Enjoy.
Nice job!!

Great writeup I wish there was something like this around back when I was a noob. I like how you explained what everything meant... Good job man...

Thanks for this. I've been debating whether or not I should root my Fascinate and this just may give me the confidence to give it a try!
Nice job!

No, this is strictly for the Fascinate, I don't really know the specifics but the mesmerize is different, I think theres a separate forum for that phone.
Great job Bawb3. I wish there was also something like this for stock app preferred replacements/alternatives all grouped together. For example, Dolphin instead of the default browser, debinged browser, replacement SMS clients, and 'must-have' apps for post rooting. Something like that, maybe to go hand in hand with this guide, to get newbies started. I would do it myself but I'm still a newbie. Wishful thinking, but mainly I just wanted to say thanks!

Maybe thats something I could put together in the future, for now I'm just trying to help the new people, and maybe reduce the clutter of simple question threads that this guide could help weed out.
P.s. thanks for all the compliments everyone!
Great
Great guide, it took me about two days of digging to understand all of this and you put it in one nice package.

Yeah, kinda why I tried to put everything together in one guide. It's hard to cover everything, but theres plenty of other guides for different things floating around.
Thank you for this beginner's guide. I'm new to flashing and rooting but following your instructions and links, I now have a sweet android phone I can call my own.

I'll try and keep this updated when we make progress with asop and gingerbread as well.

Thank you SO much! I think this has been one of THE BEST guides I have seen thus far.. It explains pretty much EVERY in great common language. Now if only I can get past my current roadblock so I can actually continue through all of these steps :/ but when I do, I'm coming back to this thread for reference!
Thank you!
This guide is great! Thank you, it sure helped me to have a better understanding of root, roms, and kernel's.

Thank you.
One suggestion, maybe host the root file on your post or offer up a mirror link. Registering for another forum is no biggie, but I'd rather not since I'm more comfortable here on XDA.

Good idea, I had forgotten that you had to register there. I'll get to it when I can, been slightly busy, thanks!

Does anyone know why there had been such a dearth of pen-testing apps out for the android? (or am I just in the dark ). Wireshark is nice, but I would think given the future of mobile, and security concerns always on the rise, Android makes a great platform to run countless apps to sniff, manipulate js, xss even.
I mean I would think there would be a scaled down version of metasploit out by now.

Not too many hackers here maybe... Oh well....I might go bother the devs for an opinion if they have one.

This isn't a needless bump... I actually found some interesting apps -- for those who take a fancy to the dark arts.... check out this link:
http://www.pentestit.com/tag/debdroid/
I originally found the site (the domain) in an XDA portal post from late February.
It's pretty cool... you can grab a lot of different data if you want.....
any update on what you found ?
There are some packages with metasploit, you can run a backtrack 5...etc.
Hi everyone i am just wondering if you guys would like me to make roms install automatically on a windows machine so please vote above
also post you views if you vote no please
Why not?
Think its a good thing for starter
Not shore if it possable but you might be able to control clockworkmod with a batch file
I voted "no" because I think there's no need for a rom auto-installer app. It's safer if you do it manually.
its not exactly an app its just a sfx archive that runs a batch file automaticlly
I think it would be prity cool, save a few mins of time thats for sure.
Good idea for newbies!

i think doing it manually far better..
Sounds good to me
Sent from my GT540 using XDA App
I prefer manual "work"
But it may be very useful for newbies.
I agree with many who agree with Auto installers.
Currently I am about to do another post about a couple of files posted in the development section which do not have any instructions on how to install and takes users know or have found where the answer is, which is like at times, finding a needle in a hay stack.
So IMO, an auto-rom installer would be a fantastic idea, so go for it.
I think this project is already in action months ago at androidforums.com. Check out.
That guy used the same technique (using SFX archives and run .BAT file)
I bought a Motorola xoom cause it seemed full of potential but there does,nt seem to be much in the way of custom development for this device, anyone else noticed it seems to be a little slow compared to other devices,

While I love a good discussion, I.thought it might be helpful for you to read and digest this very recent thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1230867
If you have something to add after reading this one, why not add to the original thread, which will put it back on the front page.

Hello all. Im new again to the world of Android. My last Android phone was the HTC EVO with Sprint. I left Sprint and went to ATT for the iPhone. I have left Apple and came back to Android. I look back and ask myself why I left Android. I don't have an answer for you.
I have a few questions and I apologize if they have been posted before but I cant seem to find a clear answer using search on the forum or on google. Perhaps my means of searching suck. That could be 100% true.
So I have the S4 with ATT MF3 build rooted. I have been looking into getting google wallet so I can use it to pay for my things in the stores. I have seen some methods for the rooted phones but the dates are older and they don't seem to work. I don't know if there is a way for me to get google wallet to work. I would love to know. I have tried one method i found on the internet but nothing seemed to work.
When I open google wallet I get this message: Insufficient Privileges. Insufficient secure element privileges for this system images (release-keys).
I dont know what to do or if there is anything that I can do. Please help me find a method or direct me in a way I can find one that will work.
Thanks for your time in advance.

Questions should go to the q&a section. But you should look in to safestrap and install a custom ROM with Google wallerlt already working.

Search "safestrap i337 xda"
Read the "pinned" threads in the General and Q&A sections. In those threads, you will find a list of ROMs that are available as well as a lot of information you need to know.

When I'm using the xda app via phone I don't see pinned threads. So if he is using the xda app instead of web browser he'll have a harder time looking for it if he doesn't know what he's searching.

Then he needs to wait until he has access to a PC or laptop. How is he supposed to get "wallet" on his phone without a PC or laptop anyway?

I flashed Roms without the use of my PC before, using safestrap. Takes awhile to download but it gets the job done. I just flashed mj6 but had to use laptop for that.

On my GS3, all I had to do was edit a couple values in my build.prop with ones from a Nexus. Then install Wallet, let it setup, and after your cards are saved, change back your build.prop.
This process may be different for a GS4. Though I don't see why. It only requires that you have root.
