Hello everyone. I haven't been able to maintain this beginners' guide, but I highly recommend the following two threads:
Droidstyle's guide has anything and everything you need to get rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070
User jawman27 has put together a glossary to help new users understand rooting terminology:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513143
Enjoy.
Nice job!!

No, this is strictly for the Fascinate, I don't really know the specifics but the mesmerize is different, I think theres a separate forum for that phone.
Great job Bawb3. I wish there was also something like this for stock app preferred replacements/alternatives all grouped together. For example, Dolphin instead of the default browser, debinged browser, replacement SMS clients, and 'must-have' apps for post rooting. Something like that, maybe to go hand in hand with this guide, to get newbies started. I would do it myself but I'm still a newbie. Wishful thinking, but mainly I just wanted to say thanks!

Yeah, kinda why I tried to put everything together in one guide. It's hard to cover everything, but theres plenty of other guides for different things floating around.

Now if only I can get past my current roadblock so I can actually continue through all of these steps :/ but when I do, I'm coming back to this thread for reference!

One suggestion, maybe host the root file on your post or offer up a mirror link. Registering for another forum is no biggie, but I'd rather not since I'm more comfortable here on XDA.

If you do brick your phone, with its heft it should make for a much better paperweight than your mytouch. I think you'll be happy with its function as such.
Refer to the oC thread in the development section. Read the first page and if you need to most of the thread.

You did at least look here right?
This same topic was addressed last night in this general forum. You should have searched. But because I'm such a good person here.
I'll link you everything you need.
the module you'll need is here. It's the "Binary (OTA 11/03)" file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8715636&postcount=1
The gscripts are here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9063932&postcount=5
Read this to know what the scripts do. Dont download any files from there just read the text.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8716108&postcount=24
Also download gscript off the market. It's free.
And last just see the video in my link. The first script you'll wanna push is the cpoc file.
EDIT: take a look at the youtube video in the first link, towards the end it will tell you what to set the SetCPU setting as. If you're cheap and don't wanna buy SetCPU you'll be surpirsed to know that XDA members get it free. I won't tell you where you can find it. Learn to search for things using google.

I'm thinking of making a new guide to help people to learn how to theme. I would like to include screenshots with exact details of what path to the images and xml codes to edit. Also directions on how to decompile, compile apks and the dreaded .9 png's.
This will take me some time to put together so any themers out there who would like to help me please pm me and maybe we can split up the apk's and each take a few to work on.
Not only will this be great for people to learn but also a great referance for us themers by combining our knowledge into 1 place. Who knows maybe we will even learn something new to add to our themes.
Any help will be appreciated!

No not yet. It was just I thought I had. As I was learning to theme I was wishing there was something like this. There are some good guides but they're not as detailed as I would like. They just get your foot in the door. There are lots of things I've learned on my own. I would like to do this to cut out some of the trial and error.
I'm gonna start on it tonight but it will be a while before I'm done with it.

Dreams guide is good but I would like to add screen shots and more specifics as to what xmls change what and what images change what. In the sreenshots I'll draw an arrow or something like that and type the path to where the xml/png or whatever is.

Sounds like a really cool idea.
I for one have read the other guide, but anything visual always helps me to pick up on things. This would be awesome for those of us hoping for a start putting themes together.
I have had some ideas for themes that I think would really only suit me and perhaps 4.78 other people so it's not really something I want to ask themers to dedicate time to (can anyone say Schoolhouse Rocks theme?), when there are so many others with more adoption and demand.
I look forward to the completion.
As someone who has tried to take up trying to make themes and has failed miserably, I approve of this concept...
A detailed theme guide in addition to Dream's would have been great for when I was learning.

Na probably not like that lol. Most of the images in the framework pretty much explain themselves. For new themers it may look a little overwhelming. The status bar alone has a few hundred images if you consider all the battery images. things like that I wouldn't need to eplain every single battery % image lol. The right screnshot could show enough to explain almost 1/4 of the images. I can still remember the first time I decompliled an apk and was gonna try xml edits. Wow was I lost and didn't have a clue where to start or what did what. A simple referance like this could have saved me a lot of time and will probably make things much easier for new themers. Who knows maybe myself or some of our current themers will learn something too. Anyways I will get started on this soon
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I think Dreams guide did a good job of explaining xml but maybe could have used a few more examples. What the guide doesn't cover is adding images into a theme through the xml files. His explanation of .9.png's and how to edit them is about as good as I've read anywhere. Also, for those that don't know, theimpaler also has a guide in the general android themes area in the stickies.

Temp root is just temporary rooting the phone.. Usually after you restart your phone it goes away..permanent root is rooting your permanently..even after you shutoff or restart your phone it stays root.. Then you can install/flash custom roms etc..try looking at the guide resources bible.. And Google some terms you don't understand...also YouTube " root mytouch4g" look at as much videos as you can before you start doing anything...
Am guessing you have version 2.3.4.. Press menu..settings...about phone..software information...android version.. What does it say...
If it says 2.3.4 then you need to downgrade to 2.1 before you can before root your phone.
Also take time to read this....

rooting and CFW
Haha, I remember being in your exact position, except i had to downgrade. But here's what I did bro. Follow this link: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier:_Full_Update_Guide. It will tell you all about rooting and downgrading if you have to. It's what I used to root my Glacier. DO NOT use any one click root apps or programs to root. ADB is probably the most secure and reliable way to root your phone. Make sure you are running Froyo, also. And as for the ROM, it all depends on your preference. In my view, there are three types of ROMs- Sense, Stock, and MIUI. Sense will most likely be 3.0 or 3.5, I like it because it is smooth and I love Sense. I would recommend using either Virtuous or CoreDroid. But then there is Cyanogenmod 7. It's the best stock Android ROM, full of tons of tweaks and mods. Last, there is MIUI, which is it's own thing. I use it when I get bored of Sense and CM7 because it's so different, that I feel like i'm not even running Android

CleanRom is one of my favorites when I feel like running a custom ROM. Im back to 4.2.1 at the moment.
I think WUG's toolkit is pretty easy for a beginner.
If you really want to play though, learn how to use adb. It may be a learning curve for some, but its really easy and fast.
Of course, search is always your friend, but most of us will still be here to help out if you need it!
Enjoy the Nexus, its a blast!

Welcome to xda Nexus 7 forum and (i guess ) Newbie Target practice Zone.
I think the biggest advice anyone can give you. Is something people do not often say. Before you flash unlock root or change one app on your device. Learn the STEPS TO GO BACK. Make all the necessary backups. Follow all instructions. But only after you understand what they are doing to your device. Read The forums about the different roms . Especially user responses and comments on the different roms.
Most of all Learn your device . Learn recoverys and basic fast-boot and adb..
Backup Backup and know how to use your backup...
NOT TO MENTION BACKUP
again welcome to the fourm and please Backup read re read.. then think before you flash.
Erica Renee ..:silly:
He's right. What's good for some may not be good for others. I'll suggest a few things. Keep in mind these are what I prefer:
Mskips Toolkit. I love it. User friendly and easy to navigate even if you're not familiar with rooting. Offers an all in one option (option 8) that unlocks the bootloader, roots, installs busy box, installs your choice of custom recovery, and will recommend the 3.34 boot loader instead of using the built in supplied by Google. 3.34 keeps root more reliably than others for some. Its compatible with all versions, it will buy you dinner, and kiss you goodnight.
Again, my preference but I've had nothing but success with Mskips work.

Hello everyone,
After lurking around XDA for a while, I've decided I'm tired of just flashing ROMs and would like to become more active in learning Android development. In that pursuit I have acquired a second OG EVO for development purposes, and figured helping others will probably help me out as well. So if any devs need a ROM(or anything related) tested, please feel free to PM me. Thanks!

Not too long ago I made this same decision, and I've been learning so much and getting into it: Two people you will want to contact are Wambo_Bomb and Jlmancuso. Both are extremely helpful.
If you want to try to build, there are two really good guides I'd recommend. Also, I would use both of them together, each have details you'll probably want.
Guide 1
Guide 2
Yes sir I can send you some test subjects and always more than willing to help out people wanting to learn.
