Hi all,
I got my Iconia A500 updated to HC3.2 last week. But I lost my root access after updating to HC3.2 and I can't tether my Iconia A500 to my ad Hoc hotspot!
How can I root my Iconia HC 3.2? I want to root my Iconia HC3.2 so that I can enable the ad hoc under root access.
I am from Hong Kong. Thanks.
Blessings,
Kin

Please be detailed in what you were doing version of os you were installing. And so on.this will more likely get someone with same experience to help.your post is left with too many variations.
if your A500 HC3.1 was rooted (you did it yourself, or...?), why don't apply the same rooting procedure to your HC3.2?

Simple reason: if iconiaroot 1.3 was used to root HC 3.1 then it will not work on HC 3.2
Tried it myself on an updated A501.

Rooting HC3.2 Iconia A500
I have the same problem. Did anyone have any solution???
I lost root also, as expected, when I updated to HC 3.2 and iconiaroot did not work (seems to be a problem with superuser. Acer just started rolling out HC 3.2 over the last couple of days but the android developers in these forums are pretty smart, I'm sure they'll start posting root solutions soon.
You may want to try this. It's the root process for 3.2 on the A100. May very well work, although I don't have 3.2 yet so I cannot test it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but tried it 4 times on my a500 with HC 3.2 and it would not root.

It was worth a try, although for the life of me I can't figure what would be different between the two, except screen size?!?

The version of 3.2 for the A500 is not the same as the version of 3.2 for A100 (the A100 has had 3.2 a lot longer) I suspect in the mean time Acer patched it before releasing the A500 version.
So far there is no way to root 3.2, and more annoyingly, there is also no way to downgrade to 3.1 to get root back (trying to flash a 3.1 update.zip on the 3.2 tablet leaves the tablet unbootable)
for now we're stuck on unrooted 3.2 until one of the devs sweeps in and saves us!

Do you suppose this is a realistic expectation? I understood that once they decide to lock the boot-loader that root becomes next to impossible.
But then, admittedly, I know very little.
I am a little pissed off about the fact that I stupidly accepted the upload without checking this first. Now I can't use wifi tether (no adhoc), making the tablet almost useless for my needs.
Oh well,
Cheers,
-PW
There are many devices with locked bootloaders that have been rooted (my phone, a motorola milestone, is one of them)
The odds are that the device will be rooted again, the only question is when, but I don't really expect it to take too long. hang in there, you'll be back up and running before you know it.

At present only solution is using nearly stock cus.rom to get root.
In more details, look at following thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265847
If he's already on 3.2, it's too late for that, he won't be able to flash that ROM. if you are on 3.2 there is currently no way to get root, or to downgrade to 3.1
Wait for, maybe, a couple of weeks and there will be a Rootmethod for 3.2.That's my experience with this great forum. For now just enjoy your clean and original Tab.

I keep seeing forum posts popping up on this and other forums from people who've upgraded to 3.2, not realizing that this is an upgrade that is irreversible and cannot be rooted.
I wonder if it would be prudent to put up a warning thread (perhaps a sticky) warning people not to accept the 3.2 OTA update if they want to continue using root.
Hi All,
I bought the A500 last week and, without a lot of thinking, I upgraded to the last OTA HC 3.2 from HC 3.01.
If I do and hard reset to factory settings does it revert to 3.01 or will stay with 3.2?

First off thanks for all the the great roms and how to's to all the devs ... I have flashed to stock 3.2 now i can't gain root ..... any ideas???
Currently there is no way to root the stock 3.2 FOTA. Nor can you go back to the older ROMs as a new bootloader was written when you flashed.
itsmagic and CWM no longer work.
Thanks for the the quick reply... was afraid of that answer ,guess I am gonna have to wait. I sure someone will figure it out real soon ...

Always a good idea to search XDA before flashing a new ROM for your device.
or like me, I was in 3.1 stock, waiting for the 3.2 update and custom ROM.
But my girlfriend find the time to update it without me
Now i've to wait for the root of 3.2 from scratch

Moved to Q&A
I'm having the same problem. Just after buying my A500, I updated it to 3.2 but I didn't know that root wasn't available in that version. Nor that I couldn't downgrade to 3.1 because of the new bootloader.
Does anyone know if it's possible to downgrade this bootloader in order to downgrade to stock 3.1 rom too? I feel that the answer is that it's not possible...

No. It's not currently possible.
I'll probably get people barking at me for suggesting this, but given that you've only recently purchased your tablet, you could always take it back and exchange it. Depending on where you got it from, they may have a satisfaction return window (usually 14-30 days for big box retail). This would allow you to return to an older version, or upgrade to a custom 3.2 ROM instead.
Normally this type of behavior is frowned upon, mainly because it is speculated to result in raised prices of consumer products in general. In truth, really it is up to the retailer. If they are willing to observe a satisfaction return policy, and you are unsatisfied with the product, you are operating within the business perimeters that they've established. It wouldn't be illegal, so its merely a question of your own morality and your willingness to take advantage.
I guess it depends on how badly you need root. For me, it is a show-stopper. My tablet sits at home now that I've lost root, mainly because it is useless for my needs without ad-hoc support.
Or you could just wait for the 3.2 root, but my gut tells me it might be a while. I don't know why, but I have a bad feeling about this particular upgrade. That's not really based on anything factual though.
Cheers,
-PW

That could be because most of the "real A500 DEVS" ( not just ROM chefs) have left this forum for a less hostile environment.
Now i've to wait for the root of 3.2
I was going to wait for the 3.2 root but now that you say it might take (lot of) time, I think I'll try to give it back to the store.
I need this root for many things, ie : mounting my nas shared folders.

I use ES file explorer, and it opens my NAS shared folders just fine without root.
(of course I also want root for many things, that's just not one of them anymore)
can't wait untill the root for 3.2 it's coming! please crack that off!
I'm waiting for 3.2 root.
I'm also waiting for 3.2 root, because i want stock 3.2 with root. Right now i'm on Honeyvillain 1.2 with no issues so far, only SU. But that's a common problem right now for 3.2 ROMS.

Once you are on stock 3.2 you can not root, and you can not downgrade, and you can not flash any modified or non-stock image. There is simply no way to do this until someone finds a way to root 3.2

I guess that's not correct, at least for A501 but I think for A500, too.
I followed those steps to get a rooted HC 3.2 for my A501:
- Download HC 3.1: Acer_A500_4.017.07_EMEA_CUS7 http://cdn.acer.futuredial.com/Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.07_EMEA_CUS7_1311771237783_253e5e46.zip
- Download Decrypter [DEV][APP] http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099673
- Decrypt downloaded file with Decrypter (put Decrypter and Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.03_EMEA_CUS7.zip into same folder)
- Unzip Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.017.03_EMEA_CUS7_decrypt.zip
- Copy update.zip from the above package to MicroSD card of A501
- shutdown (NOT restart!) A501
- Power up the tablet using Volume - & Power buttons (hold buttons until text shows up)
- A501 finds update.zip and Update will commence
After that you will have HC 3.1 on your tablet. Now root your tablet with iconiaroot 1.3 (use google to find the apk). Once it is rooted you are able to install ClockWorkMod via Acer Recovery Installer from Market, there's a thread somewhere around here, too.
Then look at thread:
[ROM][24.08]Acer A500 HC 3.2 4.015.01[HC 3.2][CWM & root] - xda-developers
So far I have no problems, everything's seem to work okay, WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G...
Hope this helps! However, I am not responsible if you brick your device! Do it on your own risk!

I can't seem to find the instructions. Thought they were stickied to main page but don't see them. I have 3.2 and would like to either downgrade and load rooted 3.2 or even just downgrade so I can root 3.1 and use that again.

Understatement of the century there. Takes about twenty minutes, including the time it takes to search the dev forum using the phrase "downgrade 3.2". You don't even need a PC, you can do it all using the tablet.
@ingrouille, it's in the development forum:

It's a stock rom that is already rooted, flashed through CWM.

wonder whats going on. checked formatting, the zip itself, the card is recognized by the tab, hmmm. any ideas? I've seen a few other people are having this issue also.

So... you basically cooked up your own rom and added SU to it.
To anyone else who needs to root just download kekinash's stock rom with superuser, it's the exact same thing as this without the steps just flash and you have rooted 3.2.
And you are in a small group of people that have SD card issues, I've owned 2 Iconia a500's and neither had a single SD issue.
It wasn't me
It was timmyDean who added root for stock 3.2. he described how to get root in adb shell only (the very first post in the thread I posted)
The way to add superuser for applications was described by chrishohl on the 3rd page of the same thread
Following his how-to one can get the rooted stock 3.2 without downgrade.

Nope, I haven't any issues with SD card, the only goal for now is 3G USB modem kernel modules. I haven't find any modules for the stock 3.2 kernel version.
Those for 3.1 failed to load with insmod since they had been built for another kernel version.

I finally decided I would take the plunge and move from 3.1 to 3.2 after I saw the "voodoo OTA RootKeeper". I had been rooted previously. Sadly, after the update, the software DID NOT work and now I'm stuck with an unrooted device. Will this get me back to rooted? Or should I just downgrade back to 3.1? I would rather NOT lose my data. My current build is Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2.

Yes either will work.
Don't that piss you off? Thanks Acer.
I did the downgrade, since rooting with iconiaroot is so easy, and I was on 3.2.1. The downgrade should work just fine, just make sure you have iconiaroot and acer recovery installer installed before downgrading, it makes life a lot easier since your keyboard wont work after downgrading. The downgrade method rom isnt for normal use, so root with it and install rooted 3.2.

TimmyDeans method, will avoid the crappy keyboard, although you can turn off functions to make it behave.
One of the important things, is the CPUID (I believe it's called) number it generates.
For anybody considering messing with things, this is a number you should always write down, and keep in a safe place.
As if you ever get a true "brick", you will need this number. And if you have a true brick, you won't be able to get it.
Just some friendly advice from a learned person.
VERY good advice from Moscow Desire, another hint is if you have connected your a500/501 to a pc then you can use an app (can't remember what its called) to find the cpuid off the pc. Its available here on xda but I seem to have misplaced it on my pc or I'd give you the name....
Hey all. I've searched through the forums, but it seems like talk of the NC has stopped in favor of talk of the NT, and I can't find the info I need.
I have a nook color running 1.4.1, unrooted. I've seen plenty of threads about how to sideload apps on the NT running 1.4.1 without rooting, but no one seems to have explained how to do this for NC. Is it still possible? If anyone can explain how to get it done, please let me know. All I really want is the Amazon Appstore and the Kindle app, so I'm not sure I really need to do a full-fledged root. I really like the Nook interface and don't want to have to flash CM7 to just read my Kindle books.

You can easily root B&N 1.4.1 without losing any B&N functionality. You can load the Kindle and Amazon App store apps with no problem. If that's all you want to do, you don't have to do anything more. GMPOWER has kindly devoted a lot of effort into developing the ManualNooter tool to make this simple. I've put together a guide on using his tool, plus a few other tips for those that prefer to stay with the B&N software. You certainly do not need to load CM7 to read Kindle books!
I don't have the stock 1.4.1 ROM so I can't tell you for sure but there are members reported that side-loading works fine on rooted stock 1.4.1 while others said they can't.

How easy is it to unroot from this method? Is there a simply tutorial on how to do that as well?
I don't want to root unless I know I can unroot just as easily, in case I need warranty support.
Just about anything you want to do to the nook is just as easily undoable. Returning to stock is a non-issue, easy as pie. Although in truth, there is almost no reason to do so. There would have to be a hardware issue, as I have yet to see an unsolved ROM or software problem on these forums, and I've seen some crazy stuff.
The nook.is a great machine, with amazing capabilities considering its origins. Adding the custom ROM makes it better in every concievable way. I ran stock software for almost nine months and regret every minute of it. GMpower did yeoman's work putting ManualNooter together for the cautious types, but I truly would recommend going whole hog with cyanogen.
I had a warranty issue with my sdcard slot after I rooted it, and even with no sdcard, I got it back to stock, replaced, and then flashed a backup of my install, all my books and apps right back to the way they were.
Everyone should root. You own the device, there is no reason not to maximize its abilities.

In his thread on MN for 1.4.1, the illustrious GMPOWER points to the NOOKdevs procedure for restoring to stock. I've used it myself a few times, and he would certainly know!
I've been running B&N 1.4.1 rooted for over a month using MN with no big issues. There are a few interface glitches that cause menus to appear as white on white, but that's about it.

Your timing is impeccable. I just updated the version over at androidforums to include some "start here" instructions. Take a look there. I'll be updating the version here when I get some time. Use the version of MN from GMPOWER's thread. I need to update those links as well (though no harm will come from using the version prior.)
