[Q] Is the imbalance between left and right speakers a software issue? - Eee Pad Transformer General

I just got my replacement 32GB today and everything's great. Minimal light bleed, no flexing. The problem with the left and right channel not balancing still exists though. Just wondering if ASUS confirmed this as a software issue or hardware issue.
Sent from my Transformer TF101

and you are talking about a stereo signal right? (Not a youtube video)
Mine is perfect

Yeah, using a clip made from Audacity to test left and right speaker results in the right one sounding audiably louder than the left.
Sent from my Transformer TF101

Unfortunately I think it might be a hardware issue. It could be solved easily with some sort of software audio balance though.

Does the volume imbalance extend to the headphone jack or is it exclusively with the TF speakers? I have not seen this mentioned in the various threads on audio imbalance. This may indicate whether the issue is hardware or software based.

With the 2 TF's I tried with, its just with the speakers. The audio from the jack is perfectly balanced

Unfortunately, this would make it more likely to be a hardware issue.
Netbook speakers *always* suck, so not too big of an issue to me. I'm sure someone will release a software hack to work around it.

I tend to think it is a hardware issue. The 1st TF i got had the speaker imbalance issue, and the second one didn't have it. But, unfortunately, one of the speaker on my second TF completely died.

I believe it's a software issue. Mine was pretty much the first that asus knew about that had this issue. They rma'ed mine for me and cross shipped one. But before I sent it back there was a firmware update and I tested the sound right before I put it in the box to send it back. It seemed to be balanced. I'm a musician and have a very sensitive ear. So when I heard it balanced I was surprised. At first even the tech in cali thought it could have been a HW issue but I told him after I updated to the .13 firmware my speakers were balanced. I now just got my 32gb. Upgraded it to prime that has the .13 update and my speakers are unbalanced. So it's odd. My 16gb with FW .9 and .12 the balance was off.. When I upgraded to the official .13 seemed to correct it. But with my 32gb the .13 fw(not official but prime) didnt fix it..

Let's just hope it is some software bug. Hardware issue with speakers would mean ASUS put reallllllllly cheap speakers in (as if they're not cheap already)

It is software.. trust me. The first time I played music I heard it right away.. then I swore it was a Hardware issue... Even Hai at asus thought it could have been a bad batch.. but Right before I sent it back after upgrading to .13 OTA The sound was fine. I really was shocked. It was even in both speakers.. Just not sure why it didnt work on my 32gb. Although when I got my 32gb it was on .9 and I didnt get a notification that .13 was available.( the only difference is the .13 on my 16gb was offical OTA and the .13 on my 32 is from prime

Both my 16 GB transformers have unbalanced speaker output, with the right playing louder than the left.

You do not know that it is a software issue, and you should not tell others it is software. This is how misinformation is spread. You BELIEVE it is software.

I do know, because I have been in constant contact with Asus. See my thread about collecting people's biggest issues so I could report them directly to the main asus tech (something he asked me to do). As I stated, when I first got my 16gb I noticed the issue right away. I noticed it on the .9 firmware(what my 16gb got shipped with) the .12 firmware(which I was one of the beta testers for asus) and when I got the OTA notification about .13 I installed it. I did my testing after that was installed and the balance was all of a sudden corrected. I did numerous tests the youtube test, playing music, movies and the sound was balanced. Sorry, I'm not misinformed. Ask anyone on this forum who knows me about my creditability. Ask anyone of the devs, they are all my buds. I'm not some noob that's taking stabs in the dark.
So if it was a HW issue I think it's funny that it all of a sudden started working after I updated to the official .13 firmware. I too thought it was HW related until I heard it for myself that it was corrected. oh wait.. here.. let me get something for you.. since I'm so misinformed
"Dear Patrick,
Thank you for the list of symptoms. I know sleep of death can be addressed with a firmware update. Video playback for codec compatibility may be addressed with the 3.1 Android which we have an ETA of June. But for now that is something that I have already reported for HQ. But it may be ultimately Google that would have to address that in an OS update.
Screen bleed per my prior email we will address in general once I get the new units allocated.
The speaker sounds issue may also be a firmware update that we will release to end users shortly might address.
Thanks,

Now after this email is when I packed the 16gb to send back to him and did the tests. I didnt expect it to be balanced as I was sure it was a HW issue but just tested for ****s and giggles and my jaw really did drop when I heard it was balanced

Funny, as you just said the .13 update broke audio on your 32gb. So which is it? Does .13 fix it or break it? Correlation != causation.

There is a keyword that you apparently do not understand: may. You are stating fact based off of a theory. This is how misinformation is born.

Because you know people does not make you a genius computer engineer. If we wish to bring credibility into the discussion, then perhaps you should look into some of my previous work in hacking and android development. Or I could namedrop some companies that I have worked for, and people I am friends with. But not that it matters, as I'm sure you will understand "may" != "100%".
Anyway, this argument is inane and completely offtopic. Whether it's hardware or software remains to be seen, but hopefully ASUS does something about it quickly.

Mine I was .9 shipped it was off balance upgraded to .13 and it was the same. The first one I had seemed fine but it got bricked by the ota. I did a rma through newegg for the speakers hopefully I get one thats not off balance.

If you read.. I have TWO transformers. the 16gb and the 32gb. The 16gb I had first. It had the issue It was upgraded to .13 which was the official OTA and the issue WAS corrected.. When I got my 32gb it had .9 on it. My 32gb had the same issue. I didnt get a notification of .13 on my 32gb. I just installed the prime on my 32gb but the issue remains on my 32gb transformer. But there is no doubt in my mind it was corrected on my 16gb one after the official upgrade. I even sent him an email when I sent my 16gb back saying he wouldnt find the left speaker issue I was having because it seems to have corrected itself.
Now the ONLY difference between my 16gb and my 32gb is one has the official .13 fw and the other has the .13 fw from the prime rom. Unless somehow(which I dont know about so cant say) the .13 upgrades something on the 16gb model and not the 32? Now that is me taking a stab in the dark..
but as a 35 year old musician who has been playing music by ear since age 12, I KNOW what I heard.. I noticed the left volume lower in a SPLIT second the first time I played sound out of my TF and I was the first reported case to Asus.
As I have said, before this I was dead set convinced it was a hardware issue and not a sw issue.. when everyone said it was sw, I was saying I thought it was hw.. but seeing(or hearing in this case) is believing.. and there is no doubt in my mind that after my 16gb got upgraded to .13 my speaker volume was balanced.
Yes he did say MAY.. But as I have said I know from MY EXPERIENCE it fixed it. Unless there was some kind of conicidence that the hw all of a sudden started working at the same time as the update.
Knowing people doesnt make me a computer eng. But the 11 years I have been working in IT and programming does. I can gladly supply you with my resume if you so wish

Care to shed any light on this, does the mention of new units suggest that light bleed is not fixable (or is not cost effective) and that replacement units are the way forward? If so, is there anything to suggest that the new TFs will be any better?

The 32gb I have has really bad screen bleed. My 16gb had it but it didnt bother me but my 32gb has it bad. When I was collecting the most common issues people were having to report back to him one of the most common people talked about was screen bleed. I had sent him pics of my 32gb with the bleed. They dont have a 32gb in the US HQ to replace mine yet. So he was just stating that when they get them in that's when he will be able to replace mine. I mentioned that I would send it in for repair as I think it would get corrected as opposed to getting a new unit that could have the same problem. I guess they dont repair them, just replace them at the moment

this is coming from a heavy user of both phones (me)
Nexus s: gingerbread and flash on camera
Galaxy s: fm radio, external sd card and HD recording at a higher frames per second.
Clear winner has got to be the galaxy s,
Note: missing an external sd is awful.
I Can't wait for gingerbread to hit the galaxy s

Not a disagreement on the topic as it is personal but I have never, ever needed an external memory card. And the SGS is way better at video which I have actually got to post soon a proper side by side recording demo, but I really do not care. At all. An that struck me as odd..
I think not everyone needs video in HD and some people may claim they do then entirely ignore the function. I prefer battery life and call quality over 720p video. But this is a personal thing.
something that should be mentioned as well
the Samsung Nexus S DOES NOT have gorilla glass, it will break if you drop it the wrong way
the SNS has NFC (which i rather trade for a microSD support)
i ran out of space too many times already, it's really hitting a nerve
is very annoying to have to keep uninstalling stuff, to be able to try something new

Edited to re-include the GGlass thing, I had it in an early draft and forgot on the rewrite..
SD over NFC... I'm sort of with you, I don't use either. But the NFC has been amusing so far just to wave it over the security tags at work, it's vaguely possible something interesting will come of that and the developer community.

Ok that was at least a quick set of corrections. I fear there will be more to do in general though perhaps after sleeping some. Thanks for the pointer.

It's certainly going to see more use in some regions than others at first, outside those who have it now. Where I am it will probably remain a curiosity for the time being.

No but it is something I could try although it may have to be faked with my stereo.
I have some night time video and regular phone call recordings which I need to mix up and put on youtube or somewhere yet - tumblr is not too good at mixing multimedia into a text post apparently.
I am open to questions on the topic, it would help me add more in a follow up post later on. The idea is to help people make a choice, even if they decide an HTC or iPhone is best for them.
SGS video recording @ 720p is good although the audio stream is pathetic. Even when trying to shoot a video of my floorstanding speakers playing music, the audio statistics of the file generated are horrendous.
Last time i checked i got 62kbps bitrate and 32KHz sample rate. This is by no means 21st century stuff. Garbage.
Audio playback through headphones sucks majorly compared to my ipod. Makes me wonder why i chose this plastic piece of junk.
GPS is top notch, on my 6th replacement handset from orange...oh its something alright. The replacement i received this morning gives a slight pink/red tint when using the camera function, focussing on a white sheet of paper.
Should have gone for the iphone4, shoots great video with good sound, plays good sound, gps works...thats all i need. Oh and mic is clear for calls. I am by no means an Apple fanboy, i just want something that WORKS! Silly i know...

LMAO!
this is so true
It is true, it is insane and it is funny. Well less funny at the price we paid but you know.
It is because of this that I suspect if 2.3 is built for SGS it is not suddenly going to work properly especially since it would seem the filesystem is a big part of the performance.
Mind you, now Google is building the OS with Hummingbird in hand perhaps it will improve slightly by default?
Google Nexus S Complaints Grow, Android Gingerbread To Blame?
Tuesday, 11 January 2011 22:24 Kayla Adams .
The highly anticipated Google Nexus S which debuted recently has all but disappeared from the headlines despite the recent row of new Android smartphones unveiled at CES 2011. However the Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone has jumped into the spotlight once again for negative reasons.
Google confirmed reboot bug in Nexus S
The Google Nexus S, manufactured by Samsung, now apparently has a bug which causes the Android to reboot randomly. Google has gone ahead and confirmed the bug which in average causes Nexus S units to randomly reboot at least once every 48 hours. There are also complaints that the handset reboots during calls.
Android Gingerbread software glitch or a Samsung manufacturing defect?
Google engineer Ry Guy, states that the search giant is "in the process of investigating with Samsung" to find the cause of the problem which they managed to reproduce in their labs. Let's hope its not an Android 2.3 Gingerbread bug as many existing Android are looking forward to the upgrade.

Not all handsets though. We had this as a major problem for SOME users around the world on the Galaxy S. Was fixed in 2.2.
I also had this on my Motorola Milestone, but so far the Nexus S has been running for 2 or 3 weeks with not a single reboot here.

[Q] how do you like your n.i.

i was thinking about buying a notion ink off of ebay. i have had a few tablets in the past ( gtab, nook color, elocity, galaxy). could you please give me your personal opinion on the notion. should i buy a notion ink, xoom, or the new toshiba tablet coming out.
thank you for your replys
I personally like my Adam, however, it is not for everyone. There are some parts of it that could be quite a bit better. For example, the display in general isn't exactly top notch. (there is about an eighth of an inch between the surface which kind of bugs me) Nevertheless, I love my tablet. Why, you ask? Because it's mine. I don't know anybody with one. It makes me special.
Now, on the subject of other tablets, I think that the transformer looks kind of cool, the xoom is kind of... not very... cool. The galaxy tab 10.1, however, looks promising. I generally like samsung products because of their quality, and the 10.1 does not look like an exception, however, it is not out yet. I have not heard much about the toshiba one so I can't say much about that.
In short, I feel that of the tablets that you mentioned, none of them are worth buying right now, unless you have some money that you are desperate to spend.
You should check out the new asus tablet I love that! Though I like my Adam too!

At $399 for the 16GB and $499 for the 32Gb the simple answer is no.
You should NOT buy the NotionInk Adam!
I bought one and I'm really happy with it, my girlfriend bought one which was dead on arrival and NotionInk support sucks - they refuse to fulfill the what they promise in the warranty.
...furhermore: The peace of hardware is ok - The PixelQi screen is superb but thats it. Forget NotionInks software (its very laggy - it simply sucks) - but there are good comunity roms.
Buy the Xoom and be happy.
Thanks. for some reason I thought they were 1200 dollars. I am definitely going to get one.
did some looking at the transformer. it is cheaper than the notion and comes with honeycomb. the best thing i like is that it comes from a company that i know and trust. i have seen too many postings on the notion ink about dead pixels.

Completely agree!
I have an Asus g60 and after a year when I sent it to get my hinges replaced, they replaced almost all the parts including the motherboard; so that I shouldn't have a problem in the future
Though not sure how much of that was thrown away, just increasing the tons of e-waste!

Buying an Adam via eBay or third party, take into consideration that the warranty only applies to the original owner.

Yeah it goes pretty good,
Screen is much to be desired, but with the right rom it seems very fast and capable.
My TC
Adam generally has everything all other tegra 2 android tablets offer. Of course the screen could be better and they have cut some corners to keep the price down.
I am enjoying having it even with the screen it has and does well in all normal tasks of surfing, reading, playing games, movies and of course hacking.
Basically try and get the cheapest but functional tablet u can, as anyway in six month's time there would be lots of other options.
I am very disappointed from the device.
I bought the PixelQi+3G+Wifi. it arrived a few days ago and the screen is horrible,it has bleeding edges,And very blur corners, the brightness is not perfect and colors are dead.
I couldent activate 3G at all (I got airplane mode right from the start) after a few mails to support and several attempts to solve the problem they admitted it is a problem that will be solved in the next update.
Here are some photos compared to my Elocity A7.
I decided to return the device ( almost losing $180 for costumes and shipping fees).

The guy who posted a couple of pictures above is making some mistakes you should be aware of.
1. He is using the VTL launcher alternative that is standard on Beast and EdenX which includes the blur on the edges on purpose to give some indication to the user that the dock is located there. You can turn that off if you want.
2. The edge bleeding is a problem mostly if you turn your screen brightness to near the top setting. This is true of many devices and its not really connected to the quality of the Adam. The iPad2 is known to have the same issue.
I have an Adam, and for the most part I like it. I wish the stock software was ok, but it isn't so I changed it. The hardware is mostly good but there are some issues there as well. The pixel qi screen is amazing, but the viewing angles on a couple of sides are bad. The ports and connectivity options are great as well. No other tablet even comes close. If the ASUS transformer had a pixel qi screen and was priced under $600 I would jump all over it. But sadly it doesn't. I am not too concerned about the lack of Honeycomb yet. The UI on Honeycomb is nice, but at this point in time lacking Honeycomb means I just can't get a couple of Honeycomb only apps I would like to get. Later on in perhaps 6 months to a year it might be a real problem, but I honestly think that by then we should have Honeycomb either from a ROM dev or from NI itself. As far as support from NI is concerned, I cannot honestly comment since I have had not a single issue that I could not resolve myself. Seeing as how you are on XDA in the first place, the software issues shouldn't be a problem for you.
I love my Adam but it definately is not for people who are looking for a perfect experience out of the box. Basically you need to root this this and get a decent version of android on it to make it enjoyable. Personally I went for the stock android experience but there are some beuitfully done upgrades to Eden (the default OS) so try 'em out!
From a hardwrae point of view, I LOVE the pixel qi screen, the camera is pretty crap but will be fine for conference calling/skype. Actually having usb ports that work is a huge boon and the HDMI port is full size which is awesome (though I havnt used it yet)
All in all I wouldn't recommend it to my Mother but to you it may just be perfect!

I love my Adam for its Pixel Qi screen and also like the hardware design and layout
BUT
I think that the startup Notion Ink sucks - support is not able to handle cases.
The software on the device is really bad in spite of that this should be there flagship - the thing which makes the Adam a better experience - Its definitely not.
Its needed to replace the software with one of the custom ROMs and there are quite a few good ones.
Conclusion: I like the device but the Company Notion Ink sucks but you have a really good experience with ROMs which are not from Notion Ink.
I was on the PO1 and made a huge mistake in purchasing the Adam. I have the PQi screen (the only saving grace for NI anymore). The glass on the Adam broke and there is no way to get it fixed. I have been sending emails to NI for a month and only received a response in the first 7 days. Other than that, the support is non-existent. My guess is the company will be out of funding and gone by the end of the year (or it will have minimized its consumer based to a small niche crowd and will be a shoe-string operation). They cannot survive with their lack customer service. And don't let their blog fool you, they are moderating out most of the posts from the blog and their conclave forums.
The hardware is good, but everyone is catching up quickly.
You would be better off going to Vegas and picking red or black with your money. You will either get a great return, or the same level of service you would get from NI.
Save yourself and don't buy one.
I was PO2 and have ad no problems with support (24 hour retune on emails) i have had nothing break and i love it there is an update comeing 1st or second week of may the brings it up to a better software version and let us not forget a startup will not have the support of the big guys adn alot of time has to be spent with the people to get funding overall Adam is not for everyone but i love mine and would not trade it for 2 xooms and a asus
p.s im running non rooted stcok eden ui
I have realized that jentous is right about the blur thing from the VTL launcher ,still , bleeding is seen in many brightness selections, colors are dull compared to a regular LCD screen , i am still unable to activate 3G yet, and there is no reply from NI support after i informed them that i wish to return the product and I'm waiting for return procedure details.

Ouya Controller Analysis

So I finally got my Ouya in the mail a few days and immediately noticed some controller issues. At first it appeared to be the input lag that everyone has been talking about. Upon closer inspection, however, I realized it seems to be a sensitivity issues with the analog sticks. You must move the sticks nearly half way to their extreme before values start registering.
To verify this, I threw together a simple app that would print the analog values from the sticks. Sure enough, it was exactly what I thought. It takes quite a bit of movement to get the sticks to register. They have a large dead zone.
In comparison, I have a wired Xbox 360 controller I hooked up to my Ouya to do the same test... And what do you know, it works great! Barely touching the sticks, they instantly start registering values.
Along with this, I found a similar issues with the analog triggers on the controller. The Ouya triggers took a fair amount of pressure before anything started being detected. And once they did, if you try to slowly press and release the trigger, the values jump around quite a bit.
In comparison again, with my wired Xbox 360 controller, trigger values are instantly registered, and the values are very smooth as you press and release the triggers.
Now I don't know if I just have a defective controller (I don't know anyone else with an Ouya to test with!) or if this is a hardware or software problem. But I'm definitely not impressed. Being a fairly avid console gamer myself, this is something I noticed right away, and instantly made games uncomfortable to play. I will be playing any games via my Xbox 360 controller for the time being.
I'd love it if some people could test this themselves. Just hop into a game, and see how much you have to move the stick before you get any actual movement!
Edit: Seems like this is a problem that lots of developers are stumbling onto now. And it seems to be worse than I thought. And a hardware issue.
Link: http://gamewoof.com/news/gamescoop-additional-problems-with-ouyas-controller/#more-4879
However, Ouya claims to have fixed it, and is replacing controllers at request
Link: http://forums.ouya.tv/discussion/1275/analog-stick-state-of-the-world/p2
Seem developers are a little suspect that it's fixed however. Sigh!
Edit 2: I've put in a support request for one of these new fixed controllers. I'll update this post with their response, and results of the new controller if I get one.
Edit 3: I posted this in a later post, but figured I should update this post as I said I would! Replacement controller works great. So if you have a bad controller, just email OUYA support and they should get a new one.
I contacted support as well. Not sure how they could have missed this. This could have gone much smoother if they would have allowed us to help with design...or at least more testing. Like you mentioned, in only a few days, a test program and java workaround class was made. They could have utilized these kind these kind of test tools in earlier phases. Engineering mistakes are more costly when you've already shipped.
This Friday's email will be pretty interesting. I wonder if Julie is going to talk about it.

Yeah I'll be real interested to see if she says anything, but I highly doubt it. Just another chart. This is going to end up being a costly mistake for them, that could have been easily avoided.
Also, 2 days now, no response from Ouya support about a controller replacement.
Edit: Wow. Actually, I do have a response from Ouya support. I just didn't notice.
My original email:
I'm writing about the Ouya controller sensitivity issues. I've ran some tests myself, and can see that I definitely have this issue with my console's controller that just barely arrived. I detailed the issue in an XDA post here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2278700
Is this what is believed to be solved already? And if so, can I get my hands on a revised controller to continue testing with?
Thanks,

I got my Ouya last Friday and experienced the trifecta of controller issues:
1) lag making most games unplayable
2) Buttons sticking under the faceplates.
3) The funky deadzones making the analog sticks all but useless.
I did a bunch of testing Saturday and Sunday trying to verify the problems were the controllers. I paired them with my computer and found them to be unreponsive and giving random button presses. But when I paired them with my android phone and nook color tablet - they worked better than on the actual Ouya itself, still a bit of lag but not nearly as bad as with the PC or Ouya. Finally on Sunday I decided to e-mail support, I gave them a polite description of the issues I was experiencing and what I had done to try and eliminate anything other than the controllers as the cause of the issues.
I didn't hear back until Tuesday at which time they asked for some details about my order, photos of the controllers with and without the faceplates on, and the serial number from the controllers (which BTW is on the inside of the removable faceplate which just seems poorly thought out to me since you could swap them between controllers making the serial numbers kind of pointless since they aren't really fixed to a controller.) I also included photos of the results from the JoystickTest apk that was posted by one developer in the official Ouya dev forums about the analog stick issues.
I sent those photos and my reply late Wednesday night. I got a reply this afternoon around 4:30 saying new controllers were on their way to me and would be shipped tomorrow (Friday) along with a shipping label and instructions on how to return the originals when the replacements come. The e-mail was a little off in that the plurality changed throughout it - one sentence they would say they would be sending replacement controllers (plural) but then the next they'd say they would send instructions on how to return my controller (no plural.) But I'm just chalking that up to an overworked support staff due to the number of controller issues they're probably dealing with and the people asking where their shipment is.
Immediately following that e-mail I got another e-mail from the USPS confirming a shipment coming to me from Julie in San Mateo - so they seem to be shipping the replacements out of CA so at least there's no long wait for them to arrive from overseas...and I'm hoping they've been through more rigorous QC here in the states but that may just be the optimist in me
I usually get shipments from CA in just a day or two so I'm hoping to have new controllers early next week. I could luck out and see them Saturday but I doubt it given my local mail service lately
In the meantime I've had good luck using a borrowed PS3 controller in games that support it. It's literally a night and day difference in the same games. Secret of Universe Alpha plays like your ship is flying through Honey or Molasses and pretty much sticks to the cardinal directions and diagonals with the stock controllers - but with the PS3 it moves fluidly and quickly. Pinball Arcade is unplayable with the stock controllers there's at least a 1 second delay between pressing a trigger and the flipper reacting. But with the PS3 controllers there's only a very very slight delay. I'm really hoping the replacement controllers are a big improvement. (Also, Universe Alpha has been updated and the dev added code to compensate for the funky dead zones. I just installed the update tonight but haven't had a chance to try it yet. He says it makes it playable with the dead zone controllers but the PS3 controllers are still better on it.)
I think the big problem (other than bad controllers) is their support staff is undermanned right now and just overwhelmed. So a bit of patience and friendly tone in e-mails with them pays off.
My Ouya arrived yesterday, the first thing I did was look for faults with the controller having read quite a bit of reports like this, luckily I think mine is one of the newer controllers in which they claim they fixed the issue, seems to work great.

Just did, my results look very much like the results they showed for the 360 controller, I'm getting activity with the slightest movement, it looks like it is indeed fixed in the newer releases.
I posted this in the developer forums and shared it on reddit, but I'll leave this here too
My one 'additional' controller that I received with my shipment on 5/13 has good analog sticks, and the one that came in the kickstarter "kit" is bad.
My unit needed an update on first startup; I have seen others saying they did not need an update when they turned it on. Not sure if that's an indication. Maybe someone who already had the update will chime in with their controller results.
[edit, can't post links since I'm new]
Hope this helps. Also, the second controller that works does not seem to have a problem with disconnecting randomly, not pairing on the first try, and button stick-age unlike the first controller.
So they definitely seem to have improved...
Edit - also, the d-pad feels a little better, but the triggers are the same.

Will add that on mine, no update was needed.
Okay thanks for the response. It looks very possible that the units that came with the update already will have okay controllers. I will continue asking around, but I feel like this is a logical expectation.

Would be logical...but mine came fully updated but with 2 of the "dud" controllers - both the one in the kit and the extra I ordered. Both have the faceplates that cause buttons to stick and the funky sticks.
I need to run the test apk tonight. My controller arrived with my OUYA exactly one week ago. The first game I played was pinball arcade and I it was unplayable die to lag(I have installed Zen Pinball HD in the meantime which works great). The left trigger got jammed within the first 5 minutes of pinball and had to bee pulled out by punching the sides. The pressure needed is definitely lower for the left spring as well. Driving with the analog stick is terrible.

Wow, quality control issues sound quite worrying to me.
Quick question. As far as android is concerned (or windows), does the touch pad on the controller get detected as a mouse? Similar to a laptop touch pad.

Yeah. The mouse pointer even shows on screen. It's as if you paired a Bluetooth mouse (with 1 button).

Yeah. I finally got a proper response from Ouya, asking for the same pictures and info. And yeah. I noticed the serial number on the faceplate thing as well, thinking how dumb and useless that is. But yeah, hopefully I'll hear back soon from them and get a fixed controller. The fact that at least some people are seeming to have proper controller is a good sign that they are on track to fix this issue, especially before the retail launch when more people will have access to our games! I can't imagine the flood of bad reviews that could come from this... I'll keep everyone updated! Running the apk on my new controller whenever I get it.

They want a picture of your controller, with and without the faceplate on, and the serial number (which is on the inside of the faceplate). Then they want the name and address the Ouya was shipped to.

I guess I am going too have to wait for my response email now. I sent pics of the test results and a.macro photo showing the serial numbers of the OUYA and the controller, but no images of the entire controller. I guess they want those to check for physical damage. I already dinged the corner of one of the aluminum faceplates, stupid soft metal, maybe they will make enamel ones in the future.
I'm second guessing my decision to request a replacement already, maybe I should have waited a month or two to see if they improve the touch pad. Mine is already getting worn smooth from navigating file menus trying to restore different types of backups. Which does make a difference.

Not to sound like a whiney XDA member, but this whole mess is becoming rather frustrating.
I'm sure they're busy, but I sent the support team all the info they requested (#'s and pics) and I haven't received a response in over a week. They were quick to explain the info I needed to provide, but nothing after that. 3 emails later...nothing.
A simple email saying "we are processing your request" would go along way. Ya know, since I was one of the backers. Silence in this case is certainly not golden.

The Lenovo Lynx is not exactly a hot-selling item worldwide, and so naturally there is not much discussion on this Windows 8 tablet on these or other forums.
There are however a few threads on XDA about one or other issue relating to the Lynx, so I thought of creating a thread where all of us could come together and share problems, solutions and tips.
I'll start off with some useful links:

You should already have done the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 (if it didn't come preinstalled) For those who did not do the upgrade, here are a few useful links after you do the upgrade from the Windows store.

Tested my unit, can't find any screen burn or bleeding. Have you tried updating your video driver? Does the display have any other problems (jagged lines while switching apps, screen going blank, 'Video driver stopped working and has recovered' message popups etc?
I did have that last problem after I upgraded to 8.1, but it seems to have resolved itself after a Windows Update.

I actually have tried 4 different versions of the display driver. I've used 1099, 1177, 1160, and 1130. 1130 is the only one that doesn't give me the "driver stopped working" message. What driver version are you using? And could you list what Windows updates you have installed?
No jagged lines at all. No blank screen.

I ordered a Refurb from Newegg for $239 yesterday, it should be here by Friday, I'm really looking forward to turning it on for the first time.
I love Android but only on my phone, Never liked it on tablets.. was always left disappointed.
I searched for awhile and couldn't find a dock for it, the only place I found was on amazon and it's "Currently unavailable".
I was hoping to find one on ebay for a decent price, I might go with a Bluetooth Keyboard + Leather Case from ebay.

Congrats on your purchase. If I were you I would try and find the lynx dock for it... you get an additional battery (it adds 4-5 hours easy) two full-size USB ports, and a trackpad (trackpad is kinda jumpy, though), and you can easily work with the docked tablet in your lap, or tilt the screen at any angle you like.
Getting a keyboard folio won't have all these conveniences.
Do let us know all your impressions of your new tablet.

I might have to just get the BT Keyboard and a 12000mAh External Battery Pack.

Have you tried this:
Go to Control Panel>Power Options>Change Advanced Power Settings and change value for Turn off Display = After 1 min.
Check if after that 1 min, does only the display go off or the PC goes to sleep?
Also change the values for Lid close action = Do nothing

Yes. Nothing of those settings works if cpu is clovertrail. Always go to sleep.

I love this tablet, newegg sent me one with a broken left speaker though, and I am trying to get it replaced, but seems like it will be a hassle.
My messages to newegg on ebay so far ...
Dear *****,
Thank you for contacting Newegg. We apologize for the delay in response time due to the enormous order volume from Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Holiday's. We answer emails in the order that they are received. If your inquiry has already been resolved, please do not reply to this email. If you have sent us multiple inquires and we have already replied, please only respond to us one time. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
I apologize to hear this, and would be glad to assist you with your return. This is a non-refundable item, so I will be able to help you return this item and have a replacement order sent out. I just need a little more information first. 1. Do you still have the original packaging and any accessory that was originally included? 2. Can you please give a detailed reason for the return?
Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. We'll be more than glad to assist you. Until then, thank you for contacting Newegg. Have an EGGcellent day!

My response...
Dear newegg,
I upgraded the tablet to windows 8.1...other than that the tablet is in the same condition I received it in.
I have the boxes it came in and I have the charger that doesn't seem to work with the tablet

As i said ...
"I upgraded the tablet to windows 8.1...other than that the tablet is in the same condition I received it in.

I do not understand your statement "original system", what are you referring to?

I hope they aren't trying to say i can't RMA because i upgraded it to 8.1 before i realized the **** had a broken speaker and defective charger.
But if i can't RMA, hopefully it's just the speaker that is broken and not the board, maybe if i could find a replacement speaker I'd just replace the broken speaker myself. But i get the sense that even with both speakers working the sound on this tablet will still be low, and i've read as much

I think the only option is to use metro apps. From reports on other forums it seems as if metro apps can keep clovertrail tabs awake even when the display is off, but legacy windows apps cannot. So if whatever you are doing (downloading, rendering, transferring etc) can be done with a metro app from windows store, that could be a solution.

I don't think having upgraded to 8.1 should be a problem. It is after all an official upgrade of the preinstalled OS.
Here in India, when I called up the service station with a battery problem (my dock battery was not working) the customer care guys kept trying to tell me to 'take the battery out and put it back in!'
The Lynx is such a rare item that none of those customer service execs had been trained for it!
I eventually had to visit a service station personally to get the dock battery replaced (when that did not fix the problem they replaced the circuit board as well).
But you should get them to replace the speaker and charger. Like in my case, the problem could be with the board.
I am not going to rma it over the broken speaker, Pay to ship it back to them and probably wait a month to get the replacement.. and the sound probably will still be low.
From the reviews i read the sound isn't that loud or good even with both speakers.
Newegg really sucks, it's been years since i bought anything from newegg but i never had problems like this with them before. I feel like i'm talking to a chat bot or something, actually a chat bot probably would be better to deal with.

You're right. Well, if you are planning to replace the speakers yourself, do post a detailed WIP here so we can all benefit. You might have to get the actual speakers from some other device and somehow get them to fit in the slots inside the Lynx.
Though since you're looking for a bluetooth keyboard anyway, you can get one which has built-in speakers.
Or even something like this:

My Initial Impressions & Pictures!

Hello Pixel C community!!!
Just wanted to give my initial impressions and pictures.
PICTURES
To sum up the initial experience, this device screams premium. It starts with unboxing:
So far everything is really responsive. The screen is brilliant and very bright. There is no lightbleed that I can tell whatsoever. Lightbleed is a BIG pet peeve of mine and this is refreshing to see that it is a non issue. The power and volume buttons have the same feel as the finish and they are firm. There is a tactile (not audible) click to them that I wish more devices have.
The speakers are loud and clear. They do lack in the low end but that is to be expected in phones/tablets in general right now. The mic's for "OK Google" work well close up (about 5ft range) but further than that it only sometimes picks up my command. I think I read down the road they will have support for "OK Google" with the screen off but for now it only works with it on.
The keyboard is very robust. It has a weight to it that builds confidence for travel. When the keyboard is attached to the front of the display the device has a solid and firm feel. It really has that familiar laptop feel when it is closed. Typing on the keyboard is a breeze. I was afraid the thin enter key would give me trouble but so far it has not. I do wish there was a track pad but I was planning on getting a portable mouse (Microsoft Arc Touch) for productivity on the go.
I set this up as a brand new device. After the setup and updates there is about 23.5 GB of storage left over. While charging there is a slight warmth coming off the back. It is charging (as I type) very rapidly. The charge cable is the USB type C and the length is adequate and on par with every other device I have bought.
All in all this is a very nice device so far. I have much to do with it still to get the full feel but right now it is blowing me away! I thought the initial experience of the Nexus 6P was great...This is amazing!
Thanks for reading and let me know if you have any questions or concerns and I will try to address them asap!

How much does the tablet wobble when tapping the screen and typing on the keyboard?
Hi, nice to share this with us. I consider buying one, but only when Microsoft Office apps and MobileSheets is working properly. Would you mind testing this? Huge thanks!
Any back light bleed?

There is not much wabble at all when typing with the keyboard while on a hard surface. Taping the display will cause a very slight wobble, a mirco wable if you will. It is really firm though. If it was bad I definetly would notice it and not like it. Im typing with is as we speak and it is a joy really.

So far on Android I have only used Google Docs. I have never tried the Microsoft office apps on any of my devices. If I end up using that solution for my needs on this I will let you know. For now Google docs work well for me.

Zero backlight bleed. One of the first things I did was crank the brightness up all the way, turn out the lights, and do a backlight bleed test. Nothing. Absolutly nothing. I went through two Nexus 10's before ultametly getting my money back because of backlight bleed. It is a big pet peeve of mine.
The build quality of the Pixel C and its keyboard is excellent.
The VERY first thing I did when I received mine yesterday, was turn off all the lights, and turn the device on. ABSOLUTELY NO LIGHT BLEED. The device feels very sturdy, and built with "Premium" in mind, just like to OP stated. Is there a way to disable the battery light on the back?

Awesome! I guess some units had a bad wobble since I remember seeing some videos of some having a lot of wobble and some having none. Hope mine is like yours

While I'm not the OP, my Pixel C also arrived yesterday. I think ultimately it all depends upon how hard of a typist you may be. For me, this happens to be one of the most stable detachable keyboards I've ever used. It's definitely more stable than my Surface Pro 3 which I currently do most of my labor intensive tasks on .
I will add that the consensus of reviews I read immediately after placing my order cited keyboard lag on their test models. It didn't bother me though since I was primarily concerned with using this as a tablet replacement (for my ancient Google Nexus 10) as opposed to a laptop replacement. All I can say is that I've yet to experience any issues with key lagging or intermittent connectivity. While I did have to refresh my bluetooth scan a couple of times during the initial setup, I'm absolutely loving my keyboard's performance thus far.
There is an OTA update it immediately upon powering that may have something to do with resolving the so-called keyboard lagging. My only nit picks would be the lack of a trackpad, and that it does seem somewhat small. However I attribute that last matter to my previous experience with the Surface Pro 3. The more I use the Pixel C keyboard, the more I like it overall.

I appreciate your feedback as well I am growing more and more excited to receiving my Pixel C come Monday
Got my Pixel C today too (I'm typing this message out on it). Really impressed with the quality of both the tablet itself as well as the keyboard attachment; top notch all around. Screen is gorgeous, even if it does have a lower PPI than my 2013 Nexus 7 and my Nexus 6. I was worried about this when moving up to a larger size tablet, but so far I have no reason to complain. Haven't had a chance to try out the audio quality through the built-in speakers yet, but I'll watch my daily YouTube videos tonight on it to get an idea of what they sound like.. Not expecting miracles, but as long as they're decent quality, I'll be happy. For any serious listening (movies and such), I'll use my Pendulumic S1+ blutooth headphones.
I'm not going to do much on it tonight, as my USB-C to USB-A cable arrives from Amazon tomorrow, and at that poiint I'll unlock the bootloader, which will wipe the device anyway, so I'm just goinig to be using the bare minimum tonight. I do hope we get root soon, as I need to install an adblocker a.s.a.p. - haven't surfed without one in years outside of work, and I forgot how much of a pain it is!
Really, I'd say the whole unit just exudes quality. I was going to wait for a month or two to see how things progressed before making the final decision to buy one, but I got caught up in the hype when the embargo lifted on Tuesday, and all the reviews, both positive and negative, just reenforced how great this tablet would be for me. Not sorry at all that I went ahead and ordered it right away, and so far, with the little time I've had with it, I'm loving it.
[Edit] Just to throw one criticism out there, I did experience one instance of keyboard lag when typing up this post. Was easy to see as the letters just stopped appearing as I was typing. Stopped, and waited about 15 - 20 seconds, and then everything started back up again. I can see this getting annoying if it happens often enough, and I do hope Google fixes this in an upcoming software patch.

That's very good to know! My Nexus 9 pissed me off with the craptacular display! Backlight bleed and defective panels, my 9 was a nightmare.
Would you be so kind as to run the Androbench storage benchmark? I am really curious to see how the storage stacks up, speed wise. Nexus devices have historically had pretty piss poor storage performance and I am curious if the Pixel C is any better.

I just ran the same benchmark on my Nexus 6P. It's kind of sad how much slower the Pixel C is, storage-wise. I don't understand why Google wont use a decent memory architecture in their devices...

It looks like the sequential read is a bit on the slower end compared to the Nexus 6P. I love my N6P :victory:
I will say that the Pixel C is a pretty snappy device though. Much more fluid compared to my Note 10.1 2014 Edition.
