There's still no confirmation as to when it will be headed to the soon-to-be-released Verizon Xperia Play, but Recombu is reporting that at least some iterations of the phone will be getting upgraded to Android 2.3.4 next week, at which point the Xperia Arc will also get bumped up to the same version. Assuming there's no surprises in the next week, that would seem to make them the first non-Nexus phones to get the update.

Yup. Looks like SE is keeping their promise.

As far as I know you will still be able to update with an unlocked bootloader and keep it unlocked. You will however most likely lose root.

DO NOT UPDATE! all signs point to the fact that you will brick your phone if you update with an unlocked bootloader.
When costum roms appear it probably won;t take long for them to implement 2.3.4. I advice to wait for that if your bootlaoder is unlocked.
Sony Ericsson has confirmed that you will be able to still get SEUS updates as long as you carry on using stock SE firmware, even if the bootloader is unlocked.

It’s also noted that, while Sony Ericsson have provided this service, using it may void your warranty. Also if you change the bootloader or load custom ROMs on to the handset, you will not be able to receive updates provided by Sony Ericsson through SEUS. However if unlocking the boot loader is all you do, you will be able to continue to receive updates from Sony Ericsson as usual.

SE themselves allowed the boot loader to be unlocked and not some third party unlocking it. So surely as long as the boot loader is unlocked and nothing else is done it should be ok?
Maybe rooting your phone and removing bloat makes SE think you have modified the firmware? Not sure but some guy on SE fourms http://talk.sonyericsson.com/message/75368 claims to be able to use SEUS to repair his Arc with an unlocked bootloader and the thread is from the 18th may.

looking in some places not found anything talking about it ... and I have a question:
I'm using 2.2 (Froyo) works "normally", when Sony release the official 2.3 it will update automatically, or should I do any procedure?
2.3 will come late Juni begin July. You will have to update using Pc Companion or Sony Ericsson Update Service.
okey,
normal update.
tks
if i am currently using a modified ROM (unofficial) will i still be able to update using PC Companion? If i have rooted my phone and currently installed busybox and xrecovery, will i still be able to boot to xrecovery if i upgraded back to official rom 2.3 (just in case it will be releases)? or do i have to reinstall both to make it work again?

You can use SEUS to update your phone on Android 2.2.1 or 2.3.3. To use SEUS you only need to put your phone in ''flash mode''.
When you upgrade to 2.3.3 everything will be lost. So make sure you make a backup. When you're upgraded to official 2.3.3, you will also lose xRecovery + root. You will have to wait till any developer gets a working rooting method and confirms that xRecovery is working on 2.3.3.
So, just sit back, relax and wait till the official release of this firmware comes! It will not take long anymore, from tommorow just almost 3 to a bit over 4 months left till the official release end Juny begin July.

I recommend NOT getting this update as it will remove root access and as far as I know there is currently no way to root .285.

It is indeed build 3.0.1.B.0.285. I was rooted before I ran the update, and I did not loose root access afterwords. Whether or not you can root after you update if you are not already rooted I do not know.
If you OTA the update you can keep root, but if you use pc companion you will loose root. OTA would not work for me so I had to use PCC, lost root, then had to flash back to .270. Sorry, I should have specified about OTA vs PCC.

We're talking about flashing with flashtool, but how many people that own the phone never heard/went on XDA how many of them never heard of flashtool. All of those people rely on their operators to push updates.

That's right. Before flashing anything to your phone, it's always a good idea to create a backup of the original firmware customization, so that you can easily restore your phone to factory state if required, especially if it's difficult to find an FTF file online with your customization.
Luckily, there is also a way to return to your original customization without FTF file, but it requires a rooted phone with a locked bootloader:
[GUIDE] Download ANY firmware customization with SUS and create an FTF with Flashtool
