Hey guys I'm on Ics but I used to be in att 2.3.3 but this morning I got a text from att saying
AT&T IS PROVIDING A CRITICAL SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR YOUR DEVICE. Please follow screen prompts to install. Thank you.
This is the # I received the text from. 1111487600
PS- if this update is legit and it only is a modified version 2.3.3 then I reccomond upgrading to 2.3.4 using wotan server then upgrade to pvyparts teamstock until u get ur bootloader unlocked.

I got it too. Just ignored it. Would be cool for someone with a r800at to see if there is one and tell us about it.

I got it too, but Im on 4.0.3 KA13 at the moment. I thought AT&T was on 2.3.4 already so it must be a different 2.3.4 firmware like .62 maybe. I would like to know what FW it is also. But I don't feel like contacting AT&T right now.

I just installed it and it appears to just be an updated version of 2.3.3.

What's the build number?
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk 2
I just called at&t to get official info about this. They said it was build 3.0.1.B.0.285, which has been out since April. They could not tell me why they sent out a sms about it being a "CRITICAL UPDATE". I recommend NOT getting this update as it will remove root access and as far as I know there is currently no way to root .285.

It is indeed build 3.0.1.B.0.285. I was rooted before I ran the update, and I did not loose root access afterwords. Whether or not you can root after you update if you are not already rooted I do not know.
If you OTA the update you can keep root, but if you use pc companion you will loose root. OTA would not work for me so I had to use PCC, lost root, then had to flash back to .270. Sorry, I should have specified about OTA vs PCC.

You can't do OTA if you are "bootloader unlocked. And about critical-"It's *critical* that AT&T and Verizon come out of the stone age!! We are almost on Jelly Bean.lmao. They just push these out to catch one of us with unlocked bootloaders slipping to force us to buy a new phone.

Hi all,
I'm new to this site (and this stuff in general) and just have a question. I'm using an unlocked G2 in Canada and was wondering if I'll still be able to get the 2.2.1 update even if I'm not on the T-mobile network. Sorry, if this was already asked and thank you for your patience with my noob-ness. (I couldn't find this searching through google).
Edit: O geeze. Put the wrong number down for update. =_=;
There is no official OTA yet. And you are already on 2.2, the update just does some small fixes/enhancements. As to whether you can get it, I would like to know as well.
Simple answer no. tmobile sends out the updates so if your not on there network you wont be able to get it as an over the air (ota) update

Would there be a manual way to get this update as opposed to OTA...?

Yes, once the OTA hits someone will extract the link and host the update so that everyone doesn't have to wait for the OTA to roll out because TMo (and everyone else) pushes updates in batch form not all at once.
So yes you will be able to get it... just not in OTA form.
There was a checkin code, people were using to manually check for updates, but I dont know if that works for anyone?
Once we get full root, and the update is sent to us, im sure someone will create a post. From there you can download and install it.

I got my G1 in Hong Kong and not using T-mobile, but I was able to get OTA update to 1.1 and 1.5
Sounds awesome. Here's hoping it doesn't take until a full root inorder to extract the update. Thanks, makes me feel more hopeful. Tethering and Wifi calling would be nice to have...

That isn't entirely correct. OTA updates to the OS are Google-managed and are sent out for T-Mobile's phones pending T-Mobile's approval.

its sim locked to orange but no orange logo on the back like there was on my desire
Thx
yeah though the safest way (same way im doing it) is with gingerbrick, leave the bootloader locked and just root it that way.
I already had that version when got my play

as long as your bootloader is locked and you rooted with gingerbrick your ok to update
What were the changes from xx.181 to xx.184? I updated mine but not noticed anything apart from a bit more slowdown?
Does this update block gingerbreak in any way? I'm not rooted yet, and I don't want to lose the ability to root (just haven't had the time to root it yet) after doing this update.

What if you used Titanium Backup or some other freeze program to freeze apps like Timescape and other bloatware. Do they need to all be restored before the update?

If you had your bootloader unlocked with testpoint method, you are free to OTA update with no issues, only phones unlocked through official sony method loose ability to OTA.

Yep OTA away, you will have no issues. If you deleted any apps from /system/app/ though OTA will fail. You must restore /system/ to default state
I haven't deleted anything I just took the brand new phone out the box linked up with Alejandrissimo lol used a pair of tweezer to bridge the test point cause I couldn't find a paper clip anywhere and when done check it was unlocked and put it back in the box.

I am under the assumption that phones with unlocked bootloaders won't be able to use OTA will have to manually update with fruitcakes. I may be wrong tho.

If you're on stock rom+recovery and you're not rooted, you can have your bootloader unlocked, you will still get the official update.

As usual chat support doesn't know diddly, because I received all the lollipop OTAs while being rooted.
You just can't install them while rooted though. So revert to your pre-root backup (YOU BACKED UP YOUR /SYSTEM BEFORE ROOTING, RIGHT??!??) and then install the OTA.

HA HA HA! Great LAME joke by historical JOKERS! I have longtime rage on this company due to past bad experiences with this company. They did good by allowing easy and official unlock procedure.
But here you missed the GOLDEN CHANCE TO HUMILIATE them! I would have typed this, >>>> "LIKE WE DO CARE? HA HA HA! Look MotoJokers, if update comes to one UnRooted/Locked phone, it will be on all Rooted/UnLocked Phones within few hours! Go ahead and prove yourself loser. BTW I am on Brazil Lollipop 5.0.1"
LITERALLY! I would have literally said that. You really missed This happened in past and still no one worried.

Thats not always true. The update installer can easily trace the status of UNLOCKED bootloader and may refuse to install. Thats mostly possible. So dont just under-estimate. Update procedures can also recognize the rooted phone status and reject to install.
Does not matter if one unlocked/rooted phone gets next update, most people here on xda will have within few hours.

In this case it's true, but if you don't beleive me, you can go to motorola owner's forum and ask them.
If people got the OTA's, then some of them will upload it so rooted and/or impatient users can flash them manually right?
