[Q] problems rooting new mt4g

hello! i am hoping someone can figure out what i am doing wrong. I am completely new to rooting phones.read lots about it but this is my first attempt.i have had help from a friend that has rooted several phones (including his mt4g) Now i just got this phone yesterday so its new with only the required apps for rooting on it.
both my friend and i have tried several times this method:
6. Run visionary to gain temp root.
7. Open terminal emulator on your device, type “su”, and hit enter to gain root privileges.
8. Type “cd /data/local” and hit enter.
9. Now type “chmod 777 gfree” and hit enter to make the program executable.
10. Type “./gfree” and hit enter.
11. Wait for the program to finish and then reboot into HBoot to see if S=Off. Also, check your bootloader version. If it says s=off and has bootloader version 0.86.0000 it worked
then hit a brick wall with this step '10. Type “./gfree” and hit enter.' we get a permission denied error.
i have also tried this method several times:
5. open android terminal emulator
type in "su" then click entet (without " mark)
it will probably say permission is denied
type in "su" again, then click enter
supper user will pop up asking for permission click "allow"
type in "cd /sdcard/root" then click enter
type in "sh root.sh" then click enter
give a min or two when it says turn off and go into recovery to check if s is on or off, exit out of emulator
6. turn off the phone, then reboot into hboot by holding volume down and power button
7. it should say S=OFF
but after the reboot in step 6 it is still s-on
hboot-0.86.0000
hoping someone can help

So you are able to temproot? Does typing "su" in terminal emulator give you superuser privileges (if the prompt symbol changes to a # instead of a $, it worked)?
If so, make sure you've downloaded the gfree files and copied them to the proper place. You want the files themselves to be in /data/local on the phone. You do NOT want a folder named "gfree" containing these files. The commands should work exactly as written.

I'm the one that was helping the op. Does the gfree folder need to be renamed or does the files need to be moved out of the folder and placed in /data/local directly? I rooted with the above method in like 5 minutes but when I tried with the op we got ./gfree permission denied as stated above. Thanks for your help it's much appreciated and we'll post back with results.

that worked perfectly!! had to take the files out of the gfree and put them directly in local and rename the gfree folder something else. Thanks!

okay we got it figured out and s-off. For those wondering if you manually add the files through root explorer copy the files in the gfree folder and drag them to /data/local and paste. Do not put the gfree folder in /data/local. Thanks again jdkoren for the help!

would it work if you just put the files on your sd card instead? Also its a brand new mytouch 4g correct? Meaning bought in 2011? I just bought one and the unlockr method didnt work. Im going to try the method you guys did next and i saw a video in which the guy did the same thing (gfree version) but just changed data local to sdcard. Im just wondering because im about to root soon. Thanks.

Yes it was bought in 2011. Use the guide found here briefmobile just make sure to use root explorer and copy all the files inside the gfree folder and paste them to /data/local.

Q unrooting device with stock rom

Hello everyone. I rooted my mt4g a while ago and am on a stock rom. I don't remember which method is did to root it. I know I used visionary at some point and hit root now there. But I was wondering if someone can help me as far as which steps or instructions in supposed to follow. Thanks in advance

first things first did you ever turn "s" back on?
-turn the phone off, turn it on and hold the power button and the down volume rocker.
top line should tell you that.
If you are still s=off then all you need to do is download VISIONary.apk r14 and tap temp root.

i've never used r11, so i cannot answer that first hand. You should have a "unroot" button that will remove SU access.

@neidlinger i am having an extraordinary difficult time unrooting and changing S= OFF, to S= ON.
i feel like i am stuck somewhere in the middle. i am back to a stock rom using the file PD15img.zip and in terminal at the $ prompt when i type "su" it replies "permission denied". now here is the weird part. when i boot into recovery ( volume down, power button) and hit recovery it moves into the splash screen and then on to the dreaded read triangle..........once i hit vol up and power it boots into recov again.
any insight?

Well the "permission denied" just means you do not have SU access.
When you rooted your phone did you use the ./gfree method?

yep! and i feel i havent successfully removed ./gfree.

I have tried all the unrooting methods for those who used the "./gfree" method, but i am always running into issues when i try to initiate the commands.
also, where do the gfree files and folders reside? in a folder on the sdcard? or open and available on the sdcard?

did you follow the steps to reverse the ./gfree?

1. Rename the part7backup file that you already have to something just so you know that it is the original backup.
2. Open up terminal emulator or adb shell and type "su" + enter to get root privileges.
3. Type "cd /data/local" and hit enter.
4. Now type "./gfree -f" + enter to run gfree again. It will disable wp on the emmc and remove the brq filter in the kernel. (as well as make another backup, which you can delete if you wish)
5. Now run the "dd if=/where/your/part7backup-numbers.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7" and it should show the output:
xxxx bytes in
xxxxbytes out
xxxxxxxxxx copied in blah blah blah
6. Run "sync" and then reboot. (I didn't do this and it worked fine but it won't hurt either. )
If you have the engineering hboot 0.85.2007 installed you will still be showing s=off when you do the above revert steps. Follow these steps to reflash the stock hboot and turn s=on:
Download this file and unzip it to /sdcard on your device.

File Explorer Method
2. Open root explorer, sufbs, or some other file browser with root access.
a. Navigate to /sdcard/unroot.
b. Click on unroot.sh and allow it to run. Some file browsers ask permission before they execute scripts.
c. Wait 18 to 20 seconds and reboot your phone into the bootloader to check if S=on.
You now have S=ON again.

yes and i encounter errors....such as gfree not found. but my gfree and its files for some reason are directly on the root of the sdcard and not in any folders.
you dont happen to have any time on a gchat or anything of the sorts do you? i am in serious need of a walkthrough.....if you are willing and have the time. i have tried almost all these methods for the last couple days and no dice.

1st time attempt to root, stuck at visionary+

Hi all,
I appreciate this forum is cram packed with info, but for me as a newb...I can't see the woods for the trees :-(
I have a stock Orange D-HD ( A2.3.3 with sense 2.1 ) and basically just want to unlock it to use an O2 sim.
I have previously flashed WM6 cooked roms onto Kaisers / Hermes & Himyies so do understand the basic principle. And I grasp the basic point about rooting as I have flashed a Superpad device too.

So I started to follow the above tutorial thread and downloaded Visionary+ and S-OFF etc.
But even though I set USB root debugging, when I run Visionary+ to temp-root, my DHD just runs the triange message a few seconds and then just goes blank.
Is there an alternative way to root instead of visionary+ ???
Someone pls help me get past the first hurdle and root my device

I got stuck too but...
Did u try ticking the 'root on startup or reboot' option? then restart. it may take a few goes, u'll probably notice Superuser has been installed then Temproot should happen next reboot. Permroot's the same, may take a few times to stick. To test if ur root has worked try installing Titanium Backup from market, u'll need it once ur rooted.

If you have a Stock HTC with Android 2.3.3 you need to downgrade the software version first before you can use visionary.

None of this was mentioned in the guide link I mentioned in the original post. It would be worthwhile for that guide to be modded to reflect the fact a downgrade is needed.
"Open up a cmd and go to Downgrade folder"...is this done on the PC or the phone??? don't understand...

I wasn't sure I needed to as it seemed to be related to branded phones. Mine is locked to orange at present....but it doesn't have an orange splash screen or any orange logo on the phone casing. Thought if my 'build' number had '405' in the middle...that this meant I didn't need a goldcard creating...

All very well if you understand what a rom is. My software page is full of 2.50 , 2.6 type numbers and nothing below 1.7....hence my comment.
Also, I've made a goldcard out of a spare 1gb sd, and copied PD98img.zip to it. So for the next bit....do I now put that goldcard in my HTC and connect to the PC whilst set in USB debugging enabled mode.
Then do I put this lot below into the win-xp pc 'run' box line by line or one whole lump?:-

I dont use Visionary+ , it just dont work in my phone,end me up using manual method. Plus S-off and Engineering S-off.
First of all, DOWNGRADE UR PHONE TO 1.32
Gaining Radio S-OFF:
This method will get you the Radio S-OFF flag while SIM-unlocking it and setting up SuperCID, which means
1. This method will root your phone for the process if it isn’t already rooted. If you just want to permanently root your phone
2. Make sure you have ADB installed on your computer. Also, if you have previously installed VISIONary on your phone in order to root it, uninstall it first before proceeding.
3. Download Desire HD S-OFF Toolkit and unzip its contents to your computer. Put it in your adb folder
4. Enable USB Debugging on your phone from Settings > Applications > Development.
5. Connect your phone to your computer via USB.
6. Launch a Command Prompt/Terminal window on your computer, navigate to the folder where you extracted the files in Step 3 and enter the following commandsne by one , press enter after each line
adb push su /sdcard/su
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
adb push rage /data/local/tmp/rage
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/busybox
adb push root /data/local/tmp/root
adb push gfree /data/local
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/gfree
7. Install Terminal Emulator app on your phone from the Android Market and launch it.
8. Enter the following command in Terminal Emulator on your phone:

9. In a while, you will see the output “Forked #### childs”. Now press ‘Menu’ and tap ‘Reset Term’ to exit Terminal Emulator.
10. Launch Terminal Emulator again. You will notice that it force-closes. Don’t worry and just launch it again, and you should have a root shell indicated by the # prompt instead of $.
11. Now enter the following commands in Terminal Emulator:
/data/local/gfree -f
sync
/data/local/tmp/root
sync
If you get a ‘mkdir: /system/xbin already exists’ error during the process, ignore it and proceed.
12. Wait patiently while the process finishes. Once it is complete, reboot your phone.
You should now have Radio S-OFF, SIM-unlock and SuperCID all set on your phone. If you just want to install ClockworkMod recovery and custom ROMs etc., you are all good to go and do not need to gain Engineering S-OFF. You may simply install ClockworkMod Recovery, find a custom ROM of your choice and flash it to your phone from recovery.
Gaining Engineering S-OFF:
You should attempt to gain Engineering S-OFF if and only if you want to gain absolute access to your Desire HD including the ability to flash a radio or edit all your phone’s partitions the way you want. If you are not absolutely sure what you are about to do, we recommend that you do NOT proceed.
1. Make sure you have already gained radio S-OFF by following the above-mentioned steps.
2. Download the Engineering HBoot for HTC Desire HD and extract the contents of the zip files.put in adb folder
3. Enable USB debugging (if not already enabled) and connect your phone to the computer.
4. On your computer, launch Command Prompt/Terminal, navigate to the folder where you extracted the files in Step 2 and enter these commands:
adb push hboot-eng.img /data/local
5. Finally, launch Terminal Emulator on your phone and enter these commands, being EXTREMELY careful not to make any mistake here:
su
dd if=/data/local/hboot-eng.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Make sure to allow when Super User access is requested. Wait till the process is finished and you’re done!
You now have the Engineering S-OFF HBoot installed and with this, you have absolute control over your HTC Desire HD. You can now flash radios of your choice to your phone and have access to modify all its partitions as well as unbrick it in certain circumstances where no other method would revive your device.

EDIT : okay finally at 1.32 & rooted ( yey!)
wanting to check whether the S-OFF info is right but having a mare trying to get bootloader screen to stop from tripping to HBOOT and running the PD98IMG ( even though I took out the goldcard ).
Is there some specific combination to hold vol-down and power for a set number of seconds? I've tried 10+ times and can't stop it going onto the HBOOT update thingy :-(

Before I made my goldcard I put a copy of pd98img.zip on my SD card....and although I took out the goldcard...when I put the normal SD back in, I neglected to recall it had a copy of pd98img.zip still sat on it.
Thats why I couldn't access bootloader.
Anyways, I have the right S-OFF info so its now onwards the next step

Ok, here is my story. I have a mytouch 4g, clearly, and i have s-off but withou root privileges. This happened because i used the gfree method to root my phone and then after a while my phone began rebooting itself, and i read online that this is an internal issue and many people have it. So i decided to unroot my phone so that i could get a replacement.
This is where the fun begins :/. I was on Miui, the latest one, and i used the automated unroot where u place the unroot folder and the P15IMG.zip on your phone and go to terminal to do some commands. When terminal finished what it did, it said press volume up in boot loader to finish and i did but i was too stupid to check that S was still OFF and now im on 2.2.1 without root but with S-off...
PLEASE can someone help me with this???? I am not new to this kind of stuff so i can follow somewhat complicated procedures, as long as i can get my phone to be STOCK. Thanks in advance!

perhaps try flashing one of the newer updated RUU's and then downgrade back to froyo? just throwin it out there

Well i already have Froyo and i just used visionary to get permaroot back.. phewww now i feel a little bit better, but i still have to get the S-on and i am trying to revert to stock, but when i enter the command "chmod 777 gfree" it says "Unable to chmod 777 gfree: No such file or directory"

Just return it and you should be good. I also did the same mistake and ignored the errors in terminal (dont remember exactly but i think the script assumed gfree is in /data/local while it was not or rwx perms on file were not setup right) and flashed pd15img.zip then I thought its not worth rerooting and unrooting and just returned it that way. That was 2 months ago and I haven't heard anything from tmo.

i still have the part7backup and yes i put it on the SDcard and i did follow the instructions. At first i was getting some errors that gfree couldnt find something, then i check the forums again and saw that you cant unroot while in Virtous Unity so i went back to Miui and everything seemed to work fine until it still said s-off

That's what I did and know more people have done that before. But everyone i know returned by mail. If you are returning to store, I wont take a chance and would just follow what neidlinger said above.

well, i could send it back by mail, what did you do to get them to send you a new one? and what is the risk by sending it back with s-off? meaning, what will happen if they find out?

just play dumb with them. and i doubt they would care for s-off. my old phone got shipped back rooted and s-off, even had a custom splash screen that said "rooted HTC glacier" and they still accepted it

Hey i have a question, i got my root privileges back, but when i went to do the unroot procedure again and when i entered "chmod 777 gfree" it said "no such file or directory".... do i have to do gfree again?

what did you say your reason for a replacement was? for me, my phone rebooted itself when it was on custom roms, im going to see if anything happens on this stock mytouch ui.

c. Type "sh unroot.sh" + enter.
d. Follow the onscreen prompts.
File Explorer Method
2. Open root explorer, sufbs, or some other file browser with root access.
a. Navigate to /sdcard/unroot.
b. Click on unroot.sh and allow it to run. Some file browsers ask permission before they execute scripts.
c. Wait 18 to 20 seconds and reboot your phone into the bootloader to check if S=on.
You now have S=ON again
Did you save the part7backup file that was created during the ./gfree root? did you replace it and follow the ./gfree unroot directions?

You should do gfre again, cause when you back to stock, there no more files.
when you get to this command: "dd if=/where/your/part7backup-numbers.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7" , try to remember where/your = "sdcard" then you should be S= ON.

Unrooting mytouch 4g

I used this method to try and unroot my mytouch 4g: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863899 (it's the most popular way to unroot as some say)
1. Copy PD15IMG.zip and "part7backup-whatevernuberitscalled.bin" to the root of your sdcard
2. Connect your phone to your computer and navigate to your sdk folder then type adb push gfree /data/local
3. Open up terminal emulator or adb shell and type "su" press enter to get root privileges.
4. Type "cd /data/local" and hit enter
5. Type "chmod 777 gfree" and hit enter to make the program executable.
6. Now type "./gfree -f" press enter to run gfree again. It will disable wp on the emmc and remove the brq filter in the kernel. (as well as make another backup. delete this)
I'm stuck on step 6. I typed ./gfree -f but as it runs on my terminal emulator, it ends up saying modile failed to load: No such file or directory.
Can someone please help?
Btw all the other methods consists of two files that needs to be downloaded, however those links leads to a FBI Anti-Piracy warning.
