first things first did you ever turn "s" back on?
-turn the phone off, turn it on and hold the power button and the down volume rocker.
top line should tell you that.
If you are still s=off then all you need to do is download VISIONary.apk r14 and tap temp root.

i've never used r11, so i cannot answer that first hand. You should have a "unroot" button that will remove SU access.

@neidlinger i am having an extraordinary difficult time unrooting and changing S= OFF, to S= ON.
i feel like i am stuck somewhere in the middle. i am back to a stock rom using the file PD15img.zip and in terminal at the $ prompt when i type "su" it replies "permission denied". now here is the weird part. when i boot into recovery ( volume down, power button) and hit recovery it moves into the splash screen and then on to the dreaded read triangle..........once i hit vol up and power it boots into recov again.
any insight?
thanks

Well the "permission denied" just means you do not have SU access.
When you rooted your phone did you use the ./gfree method?

yep! and i feel i havent successfully removed ./gfree.

I have tried all the unrooting methods for those who used the "./gfree" method, but i am always running into issues when i try to initiate the commands.
also, where do the gfree files and folders reside? in a folder on the sdcard? or open and available on the sdcard?

did you follow the steps to reverse the ./gfree?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
1. Rename the part7backup file that you already have to something just so you know that it is the original backup.
2. Open up terminal emulator or adb shell and type "su" + enter to get root privileges.
3. Type "cd /data/local" and hit enter.
4. Now type "./gfree -f" + enter to run gfree again. It will disable wp on the emmc and remove the brq filter in the kernel. (as well as make another backup, which you can delete if you wish)
5. Now run the "dd if=/where/your/part7backup-numbers.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7" and it should show the output:
xxxx bytes in
xxxxbytes out
xxxxxxxxxx copied in blah blah blah
6. Run "sync" and then reboot. (I didn't do this and it worked fine but it won't hurt either. )
If you have the engineering hboot 0.85.2007 installed you will still be showing s=off when you do the above revert steps. Follow these steps to reflash the stock hboot and turn s=on:
Download this file and unzip it to /sdcard on your device.

Terminal Emulator Method
1. Open up terminal editor on your device.(I prefer this method b/c you can see the output.)
a. Type "su" + enter to gain root privileges.
b. Type "cd /sdcard/unroot" + enter.
c. Type "sh unroot.sh" + enter.
d. Follow the onscreen prompts.
File Explorer Method
2. Open root explorer, sufbs, or some other file browser with root access.
a. Navigate to /sdcard/unroot.
b. Click on unroot.sh and allow it to run. Some file browsers ask permission before they execute scripts.

yes and i encounter errors....such as gfree not found. but my gfree and its files for some reason are directly on the root of the sdcard and not in any folders.
you dont happen to have any time on a gchat or anything of the sorts do you? i am in serious need of a walkthrough.....if you are willing and have the time. i have tried almost all these methods for the last couple days and no dice.

Fast easy and fairly safe way, Visionary Plus r14. One click root for temp and perma-root. Usually I do not recommend the 'easy way' method because I think everyone should learn how to actually root the 'hard way' just in case.. but I have to admit Visionary Plus works perfectly on the MT4G and is fast and simple as well as fairly safe. I suggest you use the temp root option first, this way if there is any issues with your device a simple reboot will fix it.
Thanks guys I now have S=OFF and this a new replacement from TMO

download the Root.sh file .zip and sore the folder with the script file inside the folder on the root of the SD card
download Terminal Emulator from the Android Market
How to do it
Run VISIONary and temp root w/ visionary.sh and set system to r/w after root checked
go into the Term Emul and type "SU". The $ sign should change to a #

i never did. Once you turn s=off it will not check for that. after you reboot you will need to hit temp root one more time.
I'm trying it as we speak....
I temp-root?
Then I run the commands?
Then I temp-root one last time
Then Turn Off and S should be off....RIGHT?
I did a recent root though perm one. It was through a youtube video and a guide from this forum! look for perm root and s=off thread. its posted by the person who did ultimate true root and s=off.
and use visionary r11, if you dont like the manual way. thats really quick and good as well. but i dont take any responsibility though for any bricking to your phone from this suggestion xD.

k, I saw the vid, the problem is you are still running bootloader version 0.86 and we want to be on eng bootloader, 0.85.
Ok, try this:
First off: we need the SDK, get it from google here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Download the version that works for you, once it downloads (it is a .zip), extract it on your C:/ directory and for working purposes we will rename it to: "androidsdk". you have to launch the SDK manager, let it update and then read what follows:
Alternative Root Process
First, uninstall visionary and superuser and restart your device to wipe out temp root.
Second, download MT4G Modperm.zip and unzip its contents to your sdk platform - tools directory. (will be at C:/androidsdk/platform-tools
MT4G Modperm.zip: http://www.mediafire.com/?eaw0q0zjc7rrrwh
MD5Sum: 3ea4a7a6ddee711d12f7350ce60fae33
Then:
Windows Users:
1a. Using Explorer navigate to the root of your sdk. Hold shift and right mouse click on the platform-tools folder. Select "Open command window here". Or, open a command prompt, type:
cd /androidsdk/
cd platform-tools/
2a. Type "adbbat" + enter. Wait till the batch file finishes. (this will only work if the file we downloaded (MT4G mod perm) is extracted at C:/androidsdk/platform-tools (make sure that you do not create an extra folder within the platform-tools directory)
2. Disconnect your phone from the PC.
3. Open terminal emulator on the phone and type "/data/local/rage" + enter. Wait for "Forked XXXXXXXX children" to appear and then close the terminal.
4. Start terminal back up. It should force close.
5. Start terminal back up, again. This time it should stay open and you should have a "#" prompt instead of a "$" prompt. Then type "/data/local/temp.sh"
6. When the script finishes run /data/local/rage again and sit tight. The phone should start acting weird and do a soft reboot. Then right after everything loads it should do a hard reboot. (the phone might not reboot twice, if it does not, then you can reboot manually into bootloader and S=Off and Hboot 0.85 should be there)
7. Enjoy root!

you didn't read what i said.
Run Visionary.sh after root should be checked
as well as
set system r/w after root.
Both of those HAVE to be checked.
As far as why you still have s=on, i have no clue.
I followed the method posted @ the unlockr (the first time i rooted my phone) link to the unlcokr. The second time i rooted my phone i followed the Wiki posted via Cyanogen Link to their Wiki page, and both of them worked perfectly.
If you want me to make a YouTube video for you showing you how to get s=off i will be more than glad to.

[Q] problems rooting new mt4g

hello! i am hoping someone can figure out what i am doing wrong. I am completely new to rooting phones.read lots about it but this is my first attempt.i have had help from a friend that has rooted several phones (including his mt4g) Now i just got this phone yesterday so its new with only the required apps for rooting on it.
both my friend and i have tried several times this method:
6. Run visionary to gain temp root.
7. Open terminal emulator on your device, type “su”, and hit enter to gain root privileges.
8. Type “cd /data/local” and hit enter.
9. Now type “chmod 777 gfree” and hit enter to make the program executable.
10. Type “./gfree” and hit enter.
11. Wait for the program to finish and then reboot into HBoot to see if S=Off. Also, check your bootloader version. If it says s=off and has bootloader version 0.86.0000 it worked
then hit a brick wall with this step '10. Type “./gfree” and hit enter.' we get a permission denied error.
i have also tried this method several times:
5. open android terminal emulator
type in "su" then click entet (without " mark)
it will probably say permission is denied
type in "su" again, then click enter
supper user will pop up asking for permission click "allow"
type in "cd /sdcard/root" then click enter
type in "sh root.sh" then click enter
give a min or two when it says turn off and go into recovery to check if s is on or off, exit out of emulator
6. turn off the phone, then reboot into hboot by holding volume down and power button
7. it should say S=OFF
but after the reboot in step 6 it is still s-on
hboot-0.86.0000
hoping someone can help
oh and i followed the steps to a T, thanks for any info
So you are able to temproot? Does typing "su" in terminal emulator give you superuser privileges (if the prompt symbol changes to a # instead of a $, it worked)?
If so, make sure you've downloaded the gfree files and copied them to the proper place. You want the files themselves to be in /data/local on the phone. You do NOT want a folder named "gfree" containing these files. The commands should work exactly as written.
I'm the one that was helping the op. Does the gfree folder need to be renamed or does the files need to be moved out of the folder and placed in /data/local directly? I rooted with the above method in like 5 minutes but when I tried with the op we got ./gfree permission denied as stated above. Thanks for your help it's much appreciated and we'll post back with results.
that worked perfectly!! had to take the files out of the gfree and put them directly in local and rename the gfree folder something else. Thanks!
okay we got it figured out and s-off. For those wondering if you manually add the files through root explorer copy the files in the gfree folder and drag them to /data/local and paste. Do not put the gfree folder in /data/local. Thanks again jdkoren for the help!
would it work if you just put the files on your sd card instead? Also its a brand new mytouch 4g correct? Meaning bought in 2011? I just bought one and the unlockr method didnt work. Im going to try the method you guys did next and i saw a video in which the guy did the same thing (gfree version) but just changed data local to sdcard. Im just wondering because im about to root soon. Thanks.
Yes it was bought in 2011. Use the guide found here briefmobile just make sure to use root explorer and copy all the files inside the gfree folder and paste them to /data/local.

[Q] Questions galore on rooting MT4G!

Hi everyone,
I have a MT4G, 2.2.1, kernel 2.6.32.21-g899d047. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
I want to root the phone but I am meeting a lot of permission issues.
I have been following this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=TMobile_myTouch_4G:_Full_Update_Guide
At the very beginning, I had problems with su and Superuser.apk.
I have used 'adb devices' to check that my phone is indeed detected.
I put su and Superuser.apk into the same directory as
When I use 'adb push su /sdcard/su', I receive an error saying 'Failed to copy 'su' to '/sdcard/su': Permission denied. Same error for Superuser.apk.
I looked further down the guide and noticed that I would not actually be using the su and Superuser.apk at all and simply copied it over to the SD card itself when I plug the phone into my computer.
I then go into terminal emulator on the phone and I run rage and received the 'Forked #### childs' message, after which I reset term.
I assume I have root shell at this point because I am no longer on $, but instead on #.
At this point, I am able to adb push gfree (the one file gfree) into /data/local. I am able chmod 777 from adb.
When I go into terminal emulator again, I run '/data/local/gfree -f' but it gives me the error message of '/data/local/gfree: permission denied'
What am I doing wrong? I used 'ls -l' inside the directory of /data/local and I have complete rights for gfree (drwxrwxrwx).
----
I have also attempted to use VISIONary+ (R14) but all it does is flash a couple of times then go back to the app page where you choose to temproot. I check my app drawer and Superuser is indeed there, but if I tried to go into terminal, I am met with $. I tried entering 'su' but it would say unknown user root.
----
PLEASE HELP! THANKS!
Use this method. It's pretty much fool proof.

Yes but I was attempting to follow a whole new guide. Regardless, I have shell root but I am still unable to run gfree. It still shows permission denied (again, using ls -l, I can see that gfree is drwxrwxrwx).
Use visionary 11. I have rooted 4 MT4G's with that guide and visionary 11...It works.
before you attempt a new rooting method please pull the battery and let the phone sit for a few moments. Since your s-on it will delete any unwanted files that you may of tried to push to the phone.
and type in
Code:
adb kill-server
adb start-server
That will refresh the adb server on your computer.
you'll also need to change the directory to the folder where you stored the gfree files.

Tried with those settings and now I've lost root shell. I'm on $ and entering su gives me unknown user root.
VISIONary says device is rooted when I try to run it again.
I would check the root on boot, reboot, uncheck it, go into terminal and put in the su command and see what happens...your phone will be really laggy when you boot it up, so give it a minute, it is normal.

check everything including the root on boot. Reboot the phone. Then you can go straight into terminal or uncheck it and go into terminal..doesn't matter. Just make sure before you reboot a second time that root on boot is not checked.

1) did you use the ./gfree method?
2) did you follow the extra steps to allow for this?
Gfree writes a backup of the file that it patches named Part7backup-numbers.bin on your sdcard. I suggest putting this file in a safe place as it is the only way to revert if you need to.
1. Rename the part7backup file that you already have to something just so you know that it is the original backup.

[q] i really need some help with my phone

Ok, here is my story. I have a mytouch 4g, clearly, and i have s-off but withou root privileges. This happened because i used the gfree method to root my phone and then after a while my phone began rebooting itself, and i read online that this is an internal issue and many people have it. So i decided to unroot my phone so that i could get a replacement.
This is where the fun begins :/. I was on Miui, the latest one, and i used the automated unroot where u place the unroot folder and the P15IMG.zip on your phone and go to terminal to do some commands. When terminal finished what it did, it said press volume up in boot loader to finish and i did but i was too stupid to check that S was still OFF and now im on 2.2.1 without root but with S-off...
PLEASE can someone help me with this???? I am not new to this kind of stuff so i can follow somewhat complicated procedures, as long as i can get my phone to be STOCK. Thanks in advance!

Well i already have Froyo and i just used visionary to get permaroot back.. phewww now i feel a little bit better, but i still have to get the S-on and i am trying to revert to stock, but when i enter the command "chmod 777 gfree" it says "Unable to chmod 777 gfree: No such file or directory"
Just return it and you should be good. I also did the same mistake and ignored the errors in terminal (dont remember exactly but i think the script assumed gfree is in /data/local while it was not or rwx perms on file were not setup right) and flashed pd15img.zip then I thought its not worth rerooting and unrooting and just returned it that way. That was 2 months ago and I haven't heard anything from tmo.

Did you save the part7backup file that was created during the ./gfree root? did you replace it and follow the ./gfree unroot directions?

i still have the part7backup and yes i put it on the SDcard and i did follow the instructions. At first i was getting some errors that gfree couldnt find something, then i check the forums again and saw that you cant unroot while in Virtous Unity so i went back to Miui and everything seemed to work fine until it still said s-off

That's what I did and know more people have done that before. But everyone i know returned by mail. If you are returning to store, I wont take a chance and would just follow what neidlinger said above.

well, i could send it back by mail, what did you do to get them to send you a new one? and what is the risk by sending it back with s-off? meaning, what will happen if they find out?

just play dumb with them. and i doubt they would care for s-off. my old phone got shipped back rooted and s-off, even had a custom splash screen that said "rooted HTC glacier" and they still accepted it

Code:
Procedure to revert
1. Rename the part7backup file that you already have to something just so you know that it is the original backup.
2. Open up terminal emulator or adb shell and type "su" + enter to get root privileges.

You should do gfre again, cause when you back to stock, there no more files.
when you get to this command: "dd if=/where/your/part7backup-numbers.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7" , try to remember where/your = "sdcard" then you should be S= ON.
