Hi everyone
I finally changed my phone to htc hd 2 after being hooked to iphone for 3,5 years and frankly, I'am pretty happy with my choice
But i really can't get some thing straigt, why do people change their original rom's giving by the manufacturer to the custom ones made by those genius developers?
Is Manila the name of the rom made by the developer? And isn't sense the real name of the firmware?
Where can I purchase a ebook reader to windows mobile 6.5?
And finally is there a quicker way to connect my contacts to their facebook profile then to do it individually?
Thank you for taking the time to read the post and thanks for all the help that may come.
Sincerely
Alan
Hi,
I can help you as to why you would upgrade the roms, simply because the phone has lots of stuff on it you wont use and if its not there then the phone works faster and better, also the roms may have other utilities built into it that are very handy that do not come with stock...personally its also taste as well...roms are made in the 'kitchen' and the people that put them together are called 'chefs' they are all different and i am finding that out myself...as for the other questions...cant help you there........YET.

once you have done it once, so long as you backup your contacts you don;t need to do it again.
Their facebook info is held in each contacts 'notes' field. So long as that gets synchronised when you backup/restore, facebook associations will still be there as soon as you log in to facebook from the phone.

Manila and Sense are both names for a user interface built by HTC to sit on top of WM and iron out some of the wrinkles.
Latest versions of WM6.5.5 have a reader tab built into Sense but there are a number of other options out there. I believe Freda is a free reader? You should find it via Google.
Whilst I appreciate that your question in the thread title is hypothetical, I would suggest that the direct answer for now is 'you shouldn't'. Get used to the phone, do a lot of reading here, try out some of the tweaks and apps, and forget about ROM upgrades until you know the phone and the operating system better - may save a bit of heartache in the short term to fight any initial temptation!
originally i flashed mine to get rid of all the telstra lock downs imposed on the phone and remove all the foxtel and bigpond junk, but as a byproduct of flashing my phone is now faster, has longer battery life, is much prettier, has loads of customizing tools and upgraded browsers, and can perform many more functions.
in the all contacts section the events tab auto detects possible matching facebook and local contacts, where you can attach them with 1 click, i find the manual way much better in the long run however.
i am experienced with flashing other devices though and i would recommend a lot of reading first before attempting it, and never flash with the sd card as it will end painfully.
Best ereader in my opinion is allreader:
http://shapeservices.com/en/products/details.php?product=allreader&platform=pocketpc
Does it break the warranty to flash it?
And do you know of a rom that would allow me to write in Russian/English and preferably also Norwegian? Thank you!
Linking contacts to Facebook
To automatically link all your contact to their Facebook profiles:
1. Go to 'All people' in the contact tab.
2. Slide across to 'Updates and Events'.
3. All the profiles that match up (by name) will appear below your profile at the top. This will take a while if there are loads.
4. Select this, check they all are right and click done.
Also you have to put HSPL on your phone to install a cooked (or any other) ROM which will invalidate your warranty. Although it can be uninstalled to send it back if necessary. (Read all about it in the sticky HSPL thread in ROMs and development).
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip about linking fb profiles, for some reason mine dont save when i restore my contacts using 'microsoft my phone' so this has saved me a bunch of time !
Well, I finally got my HD2, and have been getting to grips with it for about 2 days now. Pretty steep learning curve but go it connected to home wifi, and I'm just considering which apps to put on it? I apologise in advance if I ask a question that's already been answered, and only ask that someone point me in the right direction? Happy posting!
For a beginner!!
Perfect free tested apps for HD2
Co0kie's Home Tab 1.8.5 and its editor (a must have app finally for customizing the home tab)
Midomi (song recognizer)
Datacontroller (controls data internet connection)
Skyfire (IE with flash support)
coreplayer (best player)
Nimbuzz (IM collected)
Dragonball (cooooool game, luxor style)
Openwebradio (free international internet radio but needs TCPMP)
Mp3 trimmer (cuts mp3s to use as ringtones)
Reboot
Omniano the band v 1.1.2 (best free music instruments collected)
IGO8 (best GPS navigator)
Stopwatch
Getytv (download youtube videos)
Omarket (free app market)
TCPMP (player)
cleanRam
uconvert (best converter)
Duttys task manager for Leo (brings back the top right corner task manager)
SPB TV (awesome international internet tv)
Mp3 tag editor
Scilor's groovemobile v13 (retrieves songs from a database to listen to and be added to playlists for later playing)
Scilor's groovedownloaderwm (downloader for songs)
SciLor's LeoCameraAnyKey (allows capturing of photos thru the volume keys)
BSB tweaks (cool tweaks for the HD2)
JWMD icon changer (change app icons and themes)
Experiment 13 (cool game with nice graphics)
Just search for them on the site or try googling!!
Welcome to the world of HD2, Enjoy!!!
In case u don't know how to install....
The files' extension is .cab
Transfer the app thru bluetooth or by usb cable then search for the file then install it, i recommend installing the apps on the storage card except for BSB tweaks, datacontroller and skyfire better to be on device.
Try to save all the source files (the .cab ones) in a separate folder on the storage card for later reference .
My 2 cents.
First off coreplayer isn't free but it is worth the cash. Also look up wifi remote access premium. Again not free but it's only £5 on ms marketplace and it is probably the best application i have. It allows you to transfer files, edit the registry and remotely control your phone, amungst other things, over wifi.
Secondly, once you have got to grips with your new gadget, look at installing a new rom. It's probably the best thing i have done to mine since i've had it. New roms third party roms include a lot of the free apps and usually increase the performance of your Leo. I prefer the energy standard series but there are tons of other options.
The brilliance of owning a windows mobile or even an android based device is that they are extremely customisable if you have the willing and patience to learn how to do it. You are right, the learning curve can be steep, but it is totally worth it if you put the effort in.
As a side note, there are some apps (coreplayer is an example) that use activesync (or windows mobile device center) and an .exe file on your PC to install the program on to the phone but to be honest once you get your head around everything it's not too hard to figure out what you need to do to install any program.
Hi I'm a new member to this forum and just placed an order for a t9193, pretty excited waiting for the phone to come in. I wanted to ask what is a recommended rom if I wanted to dual boot winmo and android. I'm kind of new to the smartphone market so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best place to ask that question is in the android boards. There is a sticky thread that should cover all your questions.
from personal experience I thought "omarket" was a great place to start as most apps mentioned can be download from there . You might have to register/download the app through the website then after installation use the app to download other apps from your hd2. The website Is www.freewarepocketpc.net
Sorry for the delay in getting back. MANY THANKS Sevo!

Welcome. I can't give you any advice on roms, but I can tell you that you're in the right place to find out. I've had mine for just over a week now and I couldn't be happier with it, despite reading a lot of negative reviews prior to getting it. Check your posts and I'm SURE you'll find the answer you're looking for.

The only thing I would recommend from omarket is the htcaddicts cleanram utility.... but I think you can get that on xda.......
Seeing as nobodys mentioned Cookies Home Tab yet I thought Id throw that in the mix......... Have a look at the CHT thread
Once you've got your apps sorted you can spend the rest of your life trying out all the different sense modifications / themes that are out there......
oh yea how can we forgot CHT??

And also follow any instructions CAREFULLY.
Don't forget to read any warnings.
T8585
Hello everyone,
I got my new T8585 last Saturday. Had a hard time sync contacts from Outlook 2010 (64-bit), finally found that it is not possible and had to install outlook 2007 and then do the all importing exporting and sync. Finally was able to get that done yesterday and have all my contacts moved to HD2.
Still not sure how to feed in the aniversary/bday reminders as i was always using Nokia before this device.
Have not customized anything yet, just able to configure the WiFi and 3G and copy contacts.
Also my vendor said that if I change ROM, my 1 yr warranty would be void. So not thinking about modifying ROM (1.48.720.2 an Radio 2.05.51.05_2).
I have noticed that the battery is really poor with this devide, specially if I keep the WiFi on. Are there any tweaks to modify the battery life?
Any suggestions to make most of this device will be great.
Thanks for all the help and advice.

Welcome xprav. You've come to the RIGHT place to get the answers to all those questions! I had mine about a week, and am enjoying it immensely! I plan to mod the rom eventually, but I'm in no hurry just yet. There are plenty of tweeks and mods to try before you do that. I'd start with Cookies home tab & editor? Install NET3.5 to get it up and running first tho, and check in regularly for advice/guidance?
how do i install net 3.5 and where can i get the CHT editor from? will be great help, thanks
i would also like to know that why CHT Editor is so important, looking for the same on google too
Installed FroyoStone_Sense to my HD2. I've found that every time I switch back to WM by doing a soft reset a particular folder is damaged, forcing me to restore it. Should I be installing the Android folder to a clean, empty SD card? I was under the impression that I could just add the folder to my existing WM SD card.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know about other people but I install the droid folder onto a freshly formatted sd card to make sure. Many of the files on the droid folder will only be read by the WM OS system unless you hook into a PC.

That's what I've been doing, and I've used probably about 10 builds and have never had the problem you describe.
What folder is it?
I do have one question though, why do you 'soft reset'? Is the build your using always freezing up or is it to access some of the non-droid applications associated with WM?

Soft reset to go back to WM. Haven't gone beyond the most basic experimentation with the Android build. Need to get some work done occasionally.

It's the MarsWare folder in the Programs folder. I still use that app outside of HTC Sense. The folder has been corrupted each time I've rest to WM.
-Bob-
Hmmm, is the file that keeps getting corrupt a file that you need access to with the Android system or the WM system?
If you have two memory card then I would keep the WM files separate or try a new build, I have never had the problem myself, if you want my build then let me know.
Sounds strange. I assume Android doesn't use that folder for anything, so it shouldn't affect it.
How much space do you have left on your card?

If you hook up droid to the pc then it won't mess up your activesync but thats not what i'm saying.
The folder which keeps getting corrupted, is it stored on the SD Card in its own folder or is it being stored under the ANDROID folder in the SD Card?
The only other way around this apart from carrying two sd cards around with you is to get the DUAL-BOOT loader onto your phone so even if you reset you should have full access to all file and folders.

I don't know then mate. When you say you can restore the folder, does that mean you have a backup of it somewhere? If so, just rename the knackered one and restore the original again and maybe the knackered one will bear the brunt of the problem.
Not a fix, I know, but maybe a workround for now.

The files are only needed in WM. It's a weather program. Looks like I should buy another 16gb card for the Android.
I'm just starting with the Android thing, so ALL suggestions are appreciated. Where can I find your version?
Another question (since I have your attention ); the music player seems to interface perfectly with my WM installed music folder. I use a WM software package, Pocket Tunes, to sync playlists. Those playlists show up in the Android setup, which was amazing to me because they don't in the WM version. That left me with the impression that the Android system reads the WM format fine. Your thoughts?
Thanks again.

I believe that the pls format is universal, but I don't know for sure that Android will read it correctly. I guess the obvious answer would be to try it and find out.
I've never been a big playlist fan, so I can't talk from experience.

The Android build seems to dominate over WM for a couple of things, the music thingy is new to me but for apps like facebook etc android seems to dominate and there is not much you can do about it. I think the dual-boot loader is your best option as each OS will have a separate part of the SD card to work from, this is a theory but im not too sure otherwise, anyone else got any ideas about a bootloader?
hey,
I had the same issue with weather panel running off "second home screen" app, using DDT theme, whenever I ran android then went back to weather panel the theme wouldn't display correctly, it appears to corrupt the themes folder.
however installing WP on the device memory sorted it, tho I don't use windows anymore so can't say if it was a permanent solution.
last thing if you think you will switch to android and want something with similar features (+extras), take a look at palmary weather it's a paid app (less than a shot of brandy)
can only buy from there sight tho.

I suspect a couple weeks with Android and I'll make it permanent. Right now I'm traveling, so I'm a bit less willing to drop my crutch (WM) right now.
I am also VERY impressed with all the help on this forum. It'll make the transition much less painful.

I have had my HD2 for about a year now and are going to hard reset it for the 3rd time. I am not very fund of Manila, and have been using the SPB Mobile Shell until now (love the flexability). However now that I am resetting it once more, what is the must have installations for music, video and performance, and most important, which OS to go for? Should I try to gingerbread it and go Android, or is there Win7 possibilities?
Any advice appreciated!
WinMo7 is possible but I would go for Energy 6.5.5 29xxx builds, they have non sence builds with android style homescreen so may have something of interest.
I find sense with CHT mod hard to beat myself & well setup wm6.5.5 is hard to beat in all round professional use.
For video coreplayer, music (i use HTC sence player) but pocket player is very good.
If serious on Android I would recommend try a native device for a while to see if you really like it !

Thanks for the reply. The reason for thinking of converting to android was basically due to apps and such, but is really not a must. I've seen a few vids on youtube of how to convert to WinMo7 and Android, and it looks pretty straight forward, however if something goes wrong, could you easily go back to the original setup?
Also, I've seen some vids of the energy 6.5.5 setup, and it looks like the standard HTC theme, with some added possibilities for shortcuts etc. However, if this is manly the only reason I am pretty sure I would rather continue to use SPB Mobile Shell.
I too was a WinMo fan for years and only started on Android for fun, didnt expect to migrate. I started of just booting it now and again via SD card from widows untill I realised I was using it more and more till the point where it was automatically booting after windows on startup via bootloader.
Now ive been using Android non-stop for about a year first on my blackstone (HD1) and now on my Leo (HD2).
I honestly think you should just go the Android route on your device and leave WM6.5 behind like the rest of us. You can even use SPB Mobile shell on there if you like (leaked version) that way you still have same experience you had before but with all the apps/games of android.
And yes, to answer your question is extremely easy to go back if you change your mind. To revert everything you simply flash WM6.5 rom back on via tri-color bootloader (hold vol down and press power).
The posts above have given you very good sound advice. The only thing I want to add is before going completely Andriod with a NAND ROM. Try a Andriod SD card build first to see if you really want to go full on Andriod.
@ TheATHEiST, thanks. Thats the sort of advice I was looking for
@ T-Macgnolia, Sounds very vice to try a SD version first. I am currently using a SanDisk 16GB HC card, but I think it is pretty slow compared to the faster ones (judging from the price I paid).
By doing android via SD card, what is the easiest route for installing? Seen so many different guides, hard to know which work best.

If you have the 16GB SD card that comes with the T-Mobile HD2 it works great, this is the card I use for my SD Andriod build. All SD Andriod builds are the same, all you do is download the build, extract the zip file, (most builds create and extract to a folder named Andriod) copy the Andriodine folder to theroot of your SD card, then use the file explorer to open the Andriod folder and touch on CLCAD first to enable the sound in Andriod (it will appear as nothing appended but that is normal), then touch on HARET and you will see a box that says "Booting Leniux" then you will see a black screen with tiny writting at the top left corner of the phone screen then you will see the black screen with HTC in green then the screen will go completely black for a bit (some builds have a custom s reengineering for here so it may be different), last you will see the lock screen for the Andriod and you are booted and ready to go. Remember the first boot can take up to five to ten minutes so be patient but the .pot up time will not be that long after the first time.
Ok, dosent seems like its too diffucult then. The SD card that came with the phone only had 2GB storage capacity so I bought the 16GB straight away. Do I need to do a backup on the SD card? I have alot of photos etc. Also, I probably need a radio update (not that I've managed to understand what the radio is, except it does not play music ^^,)?

Yes I highly recomend making a back up copy of your SD card as the Adriod is going to make several folders and things on your SD card on the first bootup. This way you will know what was on there before you booted Andriod. I also suggest you flash radio version 2.15.50.14 as it is the latest radio version and it works good with Andriod be it SD or NAND. The radio is whaf controls certain aspects like your phone reception, voice quality, and such. Go the the master radio threadcthat is stickied in the HD2 Windows Mobile development forum here on XDA to learn more about it and you can download that radio version to flash there.

Ok, thaks alot for the help. I will give it a try after I backup the SD card. Any particular SD-card Android version you recommend?
edit: I found this list http://android.hd2roms.com/
Besides from knowing I want a SD version I am not sure which I should try. Just go for the one that was updated most recently?

Do you have a active data connection at all? If you have one then the APN is set for your carrier but if you do not then you will have to set up your APN settings. I do appologize as the only APN settings I know is the ones for US T-Mobile.So unless house are a US T-Mobile customer I do not know them. You can probabky Google your carrier or search g their web site and find the APN you need to enter. In Andriod go to Settings/Wireless and Networks/ Wireless connection (I think doing this from memory here) then touch on APN then press the Windows hard Start button and touchon add.
Android is the best
Today I got the invitation to install mango on my trophy, have any one installed mango and any trouble with the beta.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Hello,
Yes i already installed MAngo on Trophy and it works perfect, i have it from 3 days and its run awesome, very fast and stable..
Regards
One of the best upgrades I have made to my phone so far, although it took me 4 tries until I finally had mango unlocked XD.
Messenger integration with the phone is pretty nice (although buggy sometimes)
Mango is the bizniss! I had to tinker with my actual location to get access to services though. Live tiles for a lot of apps, stay away from the 3g if you're on prepaid.
I will also agree, Mango is well worth the upgrade, I have it on my Verizon HTC Trophy. Runs perfect and all the new features are worth it.
Doesnt even feel like a beta, perfect!
Hi

I haven't upgraded yet but from what i understand all settings, games etc will still exist after upgrade.
If you do need to download the game again, then the marketplace will recognise the previous purchase.
The applications did remain after the update, but I official updated the phone to mango.

Really ? Have you not looked or are you just being rude ? The info on this has been out on the net over a week now how to install this on a non-dev phone. You don't even need to unlock your phone.
This info is ALL over this site, never mind the big Win phone 7 sites...(check the WP7 areas on this site)
Read all the details here...
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/2123450-post27.html
After reading that you could be installing it in 5 min, but, the whole process takes about 2-3 hours (so plan on not using your phone in that window)
I wrote the PPCgeeks page...btw it works awsome on the HTC Trophy.

It is pretty awsome but, keep in mind, it is a beta (there will be bugs) and make sure you keep your backup, you might need to restore back before you go to the final version. Your right, no Adobe flash but, you can install custom ring tones.
Talys said:
Custom Ringtones
1. Copy MP3 or WMA to Zune Collection. Choose Edit, and type in manually under Genre "Ringtone". The song must be less than 40 seconds and smaller than 1MB.
2. Go to Settings -> Ringtones + Sounds, tap Ringtone. Your custom ringtone will appear under a new tree called "Custom", above "Windows Phone"
Note that it is identified by the filename, rather than the track title.
Also, you can tap and HOLD a ringtone, and Delete will be offered (but only on the Custom ones; preloaded ones grey out delete).
