Noob Question - Problem - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Installed FroyoStone_Sense to my HD2. I've found that every time I switch back to WM by doing a soft reset a particular folder is damaged, forcing me to restore it. Should I be installing the Android folder to a clean, empty SD card? I was under the impression that I could just add the folder to my existing WM SD card.
Thanks in advance.
-Bob-

I don't know about other people but I install the droid folder onto a freshly formatted sd card to make sure. Many of the files on the droid folder will only be read by the WM OS system unless you hook into a PC.

That's what I've been doing, and I've used probably about 10 builds and have never had the problem you describe.
What folder is it?

I do have one question though, why do you 'soft reset'? Is the build your using always freezing up or is it to access some of the non-droid applications associated with WM?

Soft reset to go back to WM. Haven't gone beyond the most basic experimentation with the Android build. Need to get some work done occasionally.

It's the MarsWare folder in the Programs folder. I still use that app outside of HTC Sense. The folder has been corrupted each time I've rest to WM.
-Bob-

Hmmm, is the file that keeps getting corrupt a file that you need access to with the Android system or the WM system?
If you have two memory card then I would keep the WM files separate or try a new build, I have never had the problem myself, if you want my build then let me know.

Sounds strange. I assume Android doesn't use that folder for anything, so it shouldn't affect it.
How much space do you have left on your card?

Do you hook your "Droid" up to the PC? I've been switching back to WM before connecting to my PC. Didn't want to mess up ActiveSync capabilities with WM.

If you hook up droid to the pc then it won't mess up your activesync but thats not what i'm saying.
The folder which keeps getting corrupted, is it stored on the SD Card in its own folder or is it being stored under the ANDROID folder in the SD Card?
The only other way around this apart from carrying two sd cards around with you is to get the DUAL-BOOT loader onto your phone so even if you reset you should have full access to all file and folders.

I don't know then mate. When you say you can restore the folder, does that mean you have a backup of it somewhere? If so, just rename the knackered one and restore the original again and maybe the knackered one will bear the brunt of the problem.
Not a fix, I know, but maybe a workround for now.

The files are only needed in WM. It's a weather program. Looks like I should buy another 16gb card for the Android.
I'm just starting with the Android thing, so ALL suggestions are appreciated. Where can I find your version?
Another question (since I have your attention ); the music player seems to interface perfectly with my WM installed music folder. I use a WM software package, Pocket Tunes, to sync playlists. Those playlists show up in the Android setup, which was amazing to me because they don't in the WM version. That left me with the impression that the Android system reads the WM format fine. Your thoughts?
Thanks again.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. I was doing a restore, but then deleting the damaged folder. I'll try leaving it on.
I think I should just buy another 16gb card and use it exclusively for the Android stuff.

I believe that the pls format is universal, but I don't know for sure that Android will read it correctly. I guess the obvious answer would be to try it and find out.
I've never been a big playlist fan, so I can't talk from experience.

The Android build seems to dominate over WM for a couple of things, the music thingy is new to me but for apps like facebook etc android seems to dominate and there is not much you can do about it. I think the dual-boot loader is your best option as each OS will have a separate part of the SD card to work from, this is a theory but im not too sure otherwise, anyone else got any ideas about a bootloader?

hey,
I had the same issue with weather panel running off "second home screen" app, using DDT theme, whenever I ran android then went back to weather panel the theme wouldn't display correctly, it appears to corrupt the themes folder.
however installing WP on the device memory sorted it, tho I don't use windows anymore so can't say if it was a permanent solution.
last thing if you think you will switch to android and want something with similar features (+extras), take a look at palmary weather it's a paid app (less than a shot of brandy)
can only buy from there sight tho.

Maybe you could even get some apps which will do what you need on the android system so you wont have to change back to WM again...that could be a possibility.

I suspect a couple weeks with Android and I'll make it permanent. Right now I'm traveling, so I'm a bit less willing to drop my crutch (WM) right now.
I am also VERY impressed with all the help on this forum. It'll make the transition much less painful.

My Manila is doing something... but what?

Right... I know that my Manila is busy doing something, because:
it takes forever to load;
my phone is terribly slow while Manila runs;
battery drains like hell with Manila running;
if I replace it with the default WM6.5 theme, my HD2 becomes responsive again.
I've checked the Task Manager, but no process shows in there. I guess only processes initiated by the user would show, anyway...
So, my question is: is there any way to know which system processes are running, and how much CPU they're using?
Thank you!

What have you installed on the phone? I'm guessing that something that runs with Sense is doing it since this isn't a problem with Sense in general.
I've the same problem, and I think it's the update of facebook's contact
As expected, it's Manila.exe, running at 98% of the CPU.
I'm on stock ROM 1.61. List of the software installed:
Chainfire HD2 3D Driver Patch
ctrlPDA pinch2zoom
Mach2003 GpsModDriver
Microsoft TagReader (version modified for HD2)
PHM Registry Editor
NetRipper TorchButton
HHotFix LEO07268_621
HotFix LEO07664
Microsoft My Phone (updated version)
Lotus EasySinc Pro
Ganondolf CrayonPhysics
Google Maps 3.3.1
BsB Tweaks 1.6
M.S. Pearce ProcessManager
Started to exhibit this behaviour as I tried to connect to my company's network, but it has done it before in other situations where there were changes to the registry.
Is HardReset the only way out of this? Is it possible to re-install just Manila?
ccristal
If it were me, I'd uninstall everything in the Remove Programs list and do a soft reset. If you're gonna do a hard reset then you need to install everything anyway. I think it's something that you've installed that's causing this problem.
Let us know how you get on.
I have this behaviour as well from time to time but I couldn't think of anything causing it. My first assumption was "my phone sync" but I've deactivated it for a while but it occured again!
it only takes ~1 up to 2 minutes and then its back to normal and it's not happening frequenly.
really weird!!!

I can say for sure that it's nothing I installed, but rather something I did while I used the product. When it happened, I was trying to connect to a wireless network using a certificate. And I have done the same thing before several times, without any problem.
The feeling I get, reading posts here and there in this forum, is of a generalised unstability of Manila, which is a shame because it's a great app. Would it be possible to install a ROM without Manila, and then install it as an application, in such a way that, should it happen again, I could just remove and reinstall it? Is this pure fantasy, or is it feasible?

If you think Manilla is the problem why don't you just switch manilla off and run with the plain winmobile interface to see if that confirms what you say or not?

Done. It *is* Manila. As you can see from one of my earlier posts, it goes quickly to 98-99% of CPU.
I've been experiencing this problem, too. I've narrowed it down further. It's got something to do with Manila indexing the MicroSD card. It started for me after I copied 8GB of music over. I've since removed it, but it still eats CPU. Popping out my SD card drops CPU to 0%.
*EDIT: FIXED*
I'm not sure what fixed it out of this, but I removed the HTC folder from my SD Card's Application Data folder, and removed any album.cache files and ini files in the My Pictures folder. Afterward, Manila.exe took up about 90% CPU for 30 seconds to reindex, and then dropped to normal.
*EDIT: One other thing*
As it turned out, there must have been something on my SD Card that was offending the index. A few hours later it was back to using the CPU. I cleared my SD Card, and formatted it, and the problem has not reared it's head again. I will begin selectively copying stuff back over until I figure out what it was.
Hey, I had the same problem. I've found that the camera and the photo tag, CAN'T read two pictures with the same name. That was freezing my hd2... Also, I tryed to rec a video, and a quarter of the vid was recorded... the rest was lost...
The manilla is a little bit buggi... so, be carefull.
REMEMBER: Check the picture count... or it will create a file example: img0001.jpg and if you have a file with the same name in other folder... You will have the same problems.
Delete album.cache to be sure.
hope this help
I too found this thread enormously useful - I was experiencing the same symptoms: very high CPU usage from Manila making the phone unusable. The problem only occurred with an SD card in the phone.
I fixed the problem by putting the SD card into a card reader connected to a PC and just 'tidying up' a bit. Not sure about the pictures with the same name (it's possible that I did delete some), but some files that I particularly noticed deleting were:
.MENC encrypted files from another Windows Mobile phone
"MSDRM" details - again from another phone
I didn't clean it up in a scientific way I'm afraid, so I can't pin down the cause - but it might be worth a try to remove these files if you're experiencing the same problem? (Naturally, keep them somewhere else if these files are of value to you - you may still need them in your other phone!!)
Hope that this is helpful!

I had the same problem with 1.48 rom. I upgraded to 1.72 and the problem was solved.
Yeah .. it's just windows after all. There is just a lot of files there. Some software can make it even worse.
But there is also problem with sorting. Sorting by name is fine. Sorting by type is so slow, it did not finish in 20 minutes on my phone (had to reset and modify registers, because it remembers both folder and sorting method).
Thanks man, it was from the sorting! Mine was type sorting, switched it to name and problem is gone! Thank you!

open up file manager (default file manager) see the top right? where it says name with a little arrow? click that.
If something seems too good to be true, chances are it is.
That setting would really only be likely to affect the speed at which File Explorer searches for things (and maybe PIE if opening a directory with it). But at any rate I've never changed that setting on any of my PDAs or Phones and have seen the slowness of opening the Windows directory with many different apps, including FE and PIE, Resco, NetFront, PocketBreeze, etc. But it was worth a try. Thanks for the quick reply, I just wish it had been the magic answer.

Htc slowing down

I have had my HTC for 1 week now and it has started to slow down has any one had any experience with this problem, I also have noticed my weather location is not working properly I dont know why I would appriciate it if some one can help.

I assume you are using stock rom?
Sometimes slowdown could be due to installation of a software. Try to think of any software that might cause the slowdown.
But I think slowdown is unavoidable for most electronic devices, a month old laptop can never be compared to a same but new one.
If you wish, you can consider trying out some custom roms. They generally has better performance compared stock roms. Less junks and faster.

Installing a new ROM will remove all the stuff on phone memory. It's just like reformating a pc. If you don't like the rom, you can always try another rom.
There are plenty of stuff you need to know first before flashing a rom.
If you are new to this, make sure you read alot before doing anything to your phone. Everything you need to know can be found in the ROm Development section.

I'd recommend the Leopard 6.5.5 ROM, once you enter PIN, after that it's instantly usable, been using it for a few months now, constantly amazes me.
1) try to think if you really need the application before you will install it. Most of the apps leave lots of garbage after you uninstall them, so the phone is getting slower and slower.
2) use the program like cleanRAM
3) there is no "the ultimate ROM" - try a few - if you dont like particular one - try another. Just do not fall into the 'ROM changing addiction'
4) there is the difference between 6.5 and 6.5.x. If you used the stock ROM only, and you are used to have "Start" on top then (with 6.5.x) you will fill odd having the start on bottom - dont worry - you will use to that

its a program that clears all apps running in background and uses the free RAM for quicker processing.
also, I would recommend you to use a task manager in order to actually close applications after your donee using them instead off just minimizing them. because if you were like me when I first got my phone, I was so used to the iphone/android lack of multitasking, that I would always just push the home button to exit out of apps.however windows leaves them running in the background which causes a lotof slowdowns.
slowing down....confusing?
hi every body....
i've in some how the same problem...i mean the slowing down...
but i think the word i use is a little incorrect...because my phone works fast, and well but for example sometimes when i go to mesages, for a few seconds it slows down in changing messeges and then again works as fast as possible...or as an other example some times this happens in my contact list or my home screen...esp. when the weather is cloudy and lots of clouds are moving in my home screen
but i think the overall perfomance of my phone is still like the begining day...
i thought that the problem is due to some programs that i have installed like showcase task manager or touch x power but i removed them and still some times esp. in my home screen i have the problem!?
and by the way i''m using stock rom,WM 6.5 1.66.707 WWE and í've bought my HD2 about a week ago...
i'll be glad if any one knows about how the problem could be solved?!...or even to say that it's a problem or not!?...tnx
same here
yeah i've barely had the phone about two weeks and within the first three days it started slowing down. ESPECIALLY in the messages, and even more when i had the swype text input so i took that off. and at times i wouldnt even recieve the message. my phone's screen would light up as if i was about to get a message and i checked nothing was there but my friends told me they texted me and apparently i didnt receive. i want to try a new rom. but i really dont understand what cab files, tweaks, and things of that sort are. i've rooted my g1 before but never messed with a windows phone
Yeah this is really starting annoy me, I don't want to install a new ROM as I don't understand them but I want my phone back up to speed. Need more ideas please

There's no need for any hard resets. Connect your phone to a PC and check out how much free space your device (NOT the SD card) has left. If it's below 30, then there's your problem. Just use cleartemp and cleanram, move games and other apps from the phone memory to the card, and you should be ok. If the problems still persist, then I strongly advise you to flash a new ROM and see if things get any better. Peace!

newbie questions.

Hi Guys,
Just got my new HD2 and wow, what a phone. I just retired a 3GS after about 12 month and wanted back to WM which I really missed. That said, the iPhone gave me some bad habbits that I need to break.
First thing I did was flash the HSPL ready for flashing some new roms but before I do that, I wanted to get used the WM again. My last was 6.5 on a kaiser so this is similar but different.
Anyway, couple of things. First is the Facebook app. On my iphone, when someone had posted XYX Name Likes the Group "WM 4 Me", the "WM 4 Me" portion was linked. I dont see that in the WM app. Am I missing something or is it that you cant just jump to that group? Any tips here.
Next thing is if anyone can recomend a good program to remote erase all data if I loose it or if there is anything out there to enrypt my sd card to make it useless without a password?
Last, is there a way to get the HD2 into landscape mode? I assumed it would be automatic but... Thats what I get for assuming.
Thanks in advance guys.

stock rom isnt landscapeable, some cooked roms are, but its never been released like that, it was a test rom that leaked with the landscaped tabs and the chefs cooked them in.
I'm running the stock ROM and it's correct there's no native landscape rotation built in, but I've been using the cab attached below, and it works great for putting sense and even WM apps (like file explorer!) into landscape when you physically rotate the phone. Just put the cab on your SD card, run it (install to phone), then soft-reset.
Hey thanks guys. Just installed the cab and bingo. Dont know why they didnt send it from the factory that way?
Sam, going to se if I can get hold of that remotetracker and give it a shot.
So far, happy with the stock rom so I might just tweak it a little bit. Would still like to figure this Facebook app out. Is it an actual app or a mobile webpage I'm looking at? Also need to find a new gps since my old favorite site (gpsunderground)seems to have shut down.
Thanks again.

[Q] Ok, Im hardresetting my HD2, what OS and what should programs should I install?

I have had my HD2 for about a year now and are going to hard reset it for the 3rd time. I am not very fund of Manila, and have been using the SPB Mobile Shell until now (love the flexability). However now that I am resetting it once more, what is the must have installations for music, video and performance, and most important, which OS to go for? Should I try to gingerbread it and go Android, or is there Win7 possibilities?
Any advice appreciated!
WinMo7 is possible but I would go for Energy 6.5.5 29xxx builds, they have non sence builds with android style homescreen so may have something of interest.
I find sense with CHT mod hard to beat myself & well setup wm6.5.5 is hard to beat in all round professional use.
For video coreplayer, music (i use HTC sence player) but pocket player is very good.
If serious on Android I would recommend try a native device for a while to see if you really like it !

Thanks for the reply. The reason for thinking of converting to android was basically due to apps and such, but is really not a must. I've seen a few vids on youtube of how to convert to WinMo7 and Android, and it looks pretty straight forward, however if something goes wrong, could you easily go back to the original setup?
Also, I've seen some vids of the energy 6.5.5 setup, and it looks like the standard HTC theme, with some added possibilities for shortcuts etc. However, if this is manly the only reason I am pretty sure I would rather continue to use SPB Mobile Shell.
I too was a WinMo fan for years and only started on Android for fun, didnt expect to migrate. I started of just booting it now and again via SD card from widows untill I realised I was using it more and more till the point where it was automatically booting after windows on startup via bootloader.
Now ive been using Android non-stop for about a year first on my blackstone (HD1) and now on my Leo (HD2).
I honestly think you should just go the Android route on your device and leave WM6.5 behind like the rest of us. You can even use SPB Mobile shell on there if you like (leaked version) that way you still have same experience you had before but with all the apps/games of android.
And yes, to answer your question is extremely easy to go back if you change your mind. To revert everything you simply flash WM6.5 rom back on via tri-color bootloader (hold vol down and press power).
The posts above have given you very good sound advice. The only thing I want to add is before going completely Andriod with a NAND ROM. Try a Andriod SD card build first to see if you really want to go full on Andriod.
@ TheATHEiST, thanks. Thats the sort of advice I was looking for
@ T-Macgnolia, Sounds very vice to try a SD version first. I am currently using a SanDisk 16GB HC card, but I think it is pretty slow compared to the faster ones (judging from the price I paid).
By doing android via SD card, what is the easiest route for installing? Seen so many different guides, hard to know which work best.

If you have the 16GB SD card that comes with the T-Mobile HD2 it works great, this is the card I use for my SD Andriod build. All SD Andriod builds are the same, all you do is download the build, extract the zip file, (most builds create and extract to a folder named Andriod) copy the Andriodine folder to theroot of your SD card, then use the file explorer to open the Andriod folder and touch on CLCAD first to enable the sound in Andriod (it will appear as nothing appended but that is normal), then touch on HARET and you will see a box that says "Booting Leniux" then you will see a black screen with tiny writting at the top left corner of the phone screen then you will see the black screen with HTC in green then the screen will go completely black for a bit (some builds have a custom s reengineering for here so it may be different), last you will see the lock screen for the Andriod and you are booted and ready to go. Remember the first boot can take up to five to ten minutes so be patient but the .pot up time will not be that long after the first time.
Ok, dosent seems like its too diffucult then. The SD card that came with the phone only had 2GB storage capacity so I bought the 16GB straight away. Do I need to do a backup on the SD card? I have alot of photos etc. Also, I probably need a radio update (not that I've managed to understand what the radio is, except it does not play music ^^,)?

Yes I highly recomend making a back up copy of your SD card as the Adriod is going to make several folders and things on your SD card on the first bootup. This way you will know what was on there before you booted Andriod. I also suggest you flash radio version 2.15.50.14 as it is the latest radio version and it works good with Andriod be it SD or NAND. The radio is whaf controls certain aspects like your phone reception, voice quality, and such. Go the the master radio threadcthat is stickied in the HD2 Windows Mobile development forum here on XDA to learn more about it and you can download that radio version to flash there.

Ok, thaks alot for the help. I will give it a try after I backup the SD card. Any particular SD-card Android version you recommend?
edit: I found this list http://android.hd2roms.com/
Besides from knowing I want a SD version I am not sure which I should try. Just go for the one that was updated most recently?

Do you have a active data connection at all? If you have one then the APN is set for your carrier but if you do not then you will have to set up your APN settings. I do appologize as the only APN settings I know is the ones for US T-Mobile.So unless house are a US T-Mobile customer I do not know them. You can probabky Google your carrier or search g their web site and find the APN you need to enter. In Andriod go to Settings/Wireless and Networks/ Wireless connection (I think doing this from memory here) then touch on APN then press the Windows hard Start button and touchon add.
