[Q] Quick Noobie Question (New to Android) - Xperia Arc General

When you root your android (xperia arc), only root and nothing else(didnt change stock rom or anything) will you not be able to upgrade via SEUS and you need to manually update your phone?

If you root your phone (without unlocking the bootloader) you will still be able to use SEUS.
If you unlock the bootloader (necessary to install different roms) then you wont be able to use SEUS.

thank you so much for answering..though whats the difference between the 2, i mean rooting and unlocking the bootloader?

Right and wrong.
If you unlock the bootloader and subsequently load a custom ROM, then you won't be able to update through Sony Ericsson unless you flash a Sony Ericsson ROM back onto the phone first.

Rooting is a modification of your phone that allows you to install applications that modify the system.
e.g. BusyBox & Titanium Backup, screenshot applications, reboot widgets, AdFree, Google Chat with Video (on 2.3.2), etc.
It is completely optional and reversible.

thank you so much for all the answers..

Are you sure about that? Because many of us here on XDA unlocked bootloader & we did not load any custom ROM (not available yet), but we were not able to flash our phones through SEUS

I think he is correct. I saw the same in SE forum posted by a Moderator that if we are using the stock ROM then we should be able to update it.

Did u try using omnius? That's how I got back to Rogers fw. The other way I got back to stock was bricking my phone and using flash tool. Took me a couple hours to figure out but its doable. I have flashed from x10i to 10a to new 10a and back to original Rogers (but I have bricked my phone a few times, it happens )
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
There are too many omnius discussion in this forum.
Can you link me the right one?
Thanks.
I think I find the thread about it.
But where do I get the rogers fw files?
NVM , got it.
Thanks.

Doesn't that cost money?
There are two ways I know of that don't cost anything:
Flash tool
Omnius
Give that money to the dev team instead for accomplishing root.
Mod. edit: not dev related, moved to general

Out of it...

Hi, I've been on a volunteer project for 3 weeks and before that I had been keeping my phone stock (I was waiting for something I really liked to come out) I've unlocked my boot loader before but I flashed back to .83 and I got into the Moto beta program so I updated officially to the new .91
The problem is: I've been out of this for so long I literally have no clue how to install Alien (Build 4)
Can someone point me to the tutorials I need to follow (In order) to install Alien?\
I also think this could be useful for new Atrix users etc
Seriously?
Open your eyes and read! Or leave it...
OK, re-flash pudding like you were unlocking your bootloader again,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
then install cmw using fastboot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500
then install alien.
If you need more help then that, I would spend some time catching up, if you unlocked your bootloader before, not that much has changed since then.

You have nothing to contribute, and therefore nothing to say. Please act accordingly.
To the OP: CM7 has come out in a pre-beta form since you've been gone. I would try that and Alien both. See which one you like better...

But look at bottom of that page, why here's "HTC"?
Flashtool does it as well without wiping data. You just have to be ready with key

[Q] Updating bootloader

Hi all,
I haven't updated the firmware of my i9505 for a long time, it's been acting a bit weird lately so I figured I might as well update it and reset/wipe it at the same time.
I think I'm still on the old pre-knox bootloader (though on a custom 4.4.2 firmware currently - Phoenix 9.4).
If I update firmware, is it necessary to flash a new bootloader?
I'd just flash the newest bootloader + modem for ur telco.

If u are gonna use custom roms anyway, it shouldn't bother u as the knox thing won't even be there. And if ur warranty has ended it also won't be a problem.

True, my warranty should have expired some time last year probably. Is it necessary to flash a stock firmware as base before a custom, or can I flash a custom firmware immediately? Not sure if there are any hoops to jump through to flash over a knox bootloader
I'm not an expert but I was in the same situation as u. I flashed the new bootloader+modem, and was able to flash roms also without any problems.
I'm on BMG4 bootloader but that really isn't that important from what I've seen, pretty much custom roms and kernels support old bootloaders.
What is important however is what modems you use, you can use any GSM (MODEM.BIN (edge,3gh)) but you ccan not use just any 4G modem (NON-HLOS.BIN) if you are using old bootloader (no knox) the highest 4G modem you can use is BMH1, anything newer than that then you will usually loose sound and WiFi function.
Here's my phone info

How to install a new ROM in the current state of my phone?

I want to install a ROM of the latest android version. I installed a custom ROM a long time ago, I honestly don't remember what I did. I think I used "wug's tool" or something like that. Here's what my phone says:

Where it says GT-I9505G, I don't think it said that originally, when I got this custom ROM it changed to that. It's an AT&T phone (U.S). I'm not very knowledgeable about this, I usually just follow tutorials.
So what method should I use? Any tutorials, links? ROM recommendations?
Thanks.
It's important to know which bootloader is on the phone before flashing anything.
I suggest installing Samsung phone info app from the play store to find the version. Once you know the version, then you can decide how to proceed.

Add screenshots of the app to check it better.
Since he already flashed a custom rom, I don't think the bootloader is locked anymore.
In theory, you just need to flash a custom recovery (TWRP recommended) then you should be able to flash pretty much any I9505 roms.
I agree that it is unlikely that the bootloader is locked but I believe it is always good to know which bootloader is on a phone before flashing anything.
if Wi-Fi or network signal isn't good on any new rom you try you'll need to change the bootloader if you want to update the modem/baseband.
I installed the latest version of TWRP since mine was outdated. I did a full wipe as instructed in the ROM's page but TWRP refuses to install the ROM after. I keep getting "Updater process ended with ERROR: 7" "Error installing zip file [location of my file/file name]". I am without OS.
