Hi there,
i wanted to take the SMS from my old G1 to my arc.
some 334 messages.
i used the backup i had from "SMS Backup & Restore"
it said it restored them all.
i made a new backup and it said it backed up 334.
so i guess they must be in the DB.
however if i startup "Messaging"
- i get a unusable sort order (actually i can't recon what it is sorting. certainly not conversation with the newest update is top-most, what i would expect)
now i wonder:
- is this a bug of "Messaging" App
- how can i get the vanilla stock "Messaging" App
- is it a Problem with "SMS Backup & Restore" and how can i solve that
any help deeply appreciated!

It's not a bug. SMS Backup backs up messages based on date but the restore doesn't always sort it chronologically. The only way to have it updated is to send or receive a message from the same threaded conversation.
Why do you want stock? There are lots of better SMS applications.
e.g. Handcent: http://www.bestandroidappsreview.com/2010/04/top-android-app-handcent-sms.html
I've used SMS Backup & Restore a few times and never had issues until trying to move messages from one handset to another.
As BluechipJ says, the messages are all still there, it's just the order is messed up a bit.
But, over time, it'll sort itself out.
Thanks for your answers!
Now that i got messages from the most important contacts it's already getting better.
I'll have a look at handcent. Not so sure tough if I realy trust anybody when it comes to reading my SMS ;-)
Hello guys..
actually am facing this problem right now on my C6602 Xperia z..

Thanks...

Firstly, I did a search and this issue was briefly touched on, but no resolve was given. I receive a new text message, I go into my inbox it says 0 items 1 new. This has been going on for a week. Now I have missed 11 text messages. My inbox and today screen say 0 items 11new. Any way to find these messages and to repair so this does not continue?
Thanks
Help I can't retrieve my text messages... now there is 13.
nerdgurl, kindly send a list of all 3rd party programs installed.
Here is the list:
Total Commander, Sygic Mobile Contacts, Pocket Max PhoneAlarm,
AE Button Plus, SetAsRingTone, ME PhonePlus, SPB PocketPlus, Sprite Backup.
It was working fine until last week, when I did a full restore, but I do have the newest Sprite Backup so there should have been no conflicts, but I don't know.
Is there any way to retreive them with another messaging software?
Thank you so much, I'm getting desperate
Are you going to the correct inbox? There are several inboxes: MMS, Outlook E-Mail, SMS...
Restoring backups screws up inboxes. Sprite's the closest thing to a proper backup app but still not perfect.
Yes, I'm going to the correct inbox, as for Sprite perhaps I am unable to save my old messages but I can't even receive new ones. If I knew how to do a screen capture, I would post a picture of this bizzare behavior.

Nah, I would suggest SPb Clone, lotsa issues with Sprite :>
Is there any remedy for this, to retrieve my older messages or to stop this from occuring with new incoming messages?

There is a tool to backup messages. I have not yet tried it myself. I'm just going to post a link to it since after install you need to put in a code at their website in order for software to be able to run. Hope it helps.
http://pdafresh.freeweb.hu/communications/sms/app_smsbackup.htm (Backs up only messages)
Developer site: http://www.zedsoft.net/smsbackup/
http://pdafresh.freeweb.hu/communications/sms/app_allexport.htm (Exports messages AND Outlook data)
UPDATE: Export function works fine. Restore will test after a HR. Backup worx.
Developer site: http://www.zedsoft.net/allexport/
Hope it worx 4 u
OH I messed it up good! It says Message Backup successfull (0 Messages), then I tried to restore the messages and it would state: Message restore successfull (0 Messages). What have I done?
Nerdgurl,
Your sms database seems to be corrupt. Use the attached tool to delete all mail/sms databases. Dont forget to backup since it destroys all SMS, mail & account info. I had a similar prob & resolved.
Cheers...
You can try the soft from Jeyo to see, if it can salvage your messages. But when all is said and done, you will HAVE to do a hard reset, to get things running again. With a bit of luck you can reinstall everything but the messages, otherwise a full reinstall is needed.
Also, you may wanna try visiting www.Sunnysoft.cz for Backup Manager. A very nice alternative to Sprite, which has way too many unsolved bugs. I fully agree with dmmh on that...
I decided that I want to upgrade my ROM to unlock the 30 fps video on my x1a. But I want to backup all of my text messages before I do so. And I want to be able to restore them all as threaded SMS, just as they were before the upgrade. Before you guys go bashing me for wanting to backup my messages, I have personal reasons for wanting to do this, so there's no need to ask "why would you want to backup all your messages for" and other stuff like that. Just because their not important to you doesn't mean their not to somebody else lol. And I have also searched the forum for programs that backup sms, but they restore them as individual messages (not threaded) which is not what I want.
So my question is: is there a program out there that will allow me to backup and restore my SMS as THREADS? Or should I wait to get a Windows My Phone invite to do this?
I use PIMbackup. It will restore the SMS and you can choose the threads options subsequently.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-pim-backup-v2-8.html
i tried using PIMBackup before, but i don't remember seeing a threading messages option. how do you do this?
Isn't the 30fps video a hardware issue??

I couldn't agree more. I dont see why a company as huge as Microsoft cant incorporate this into WMDC/ActiveSync. It is one thing I really miss about my Blackberry.
PIMBackup works perfect even with threaded messages I checked that few times and it's works fine
but how do i restore all messages as threads with PIMBackup? cuz from what I remember, it was restoring them as individual messages, making my phone move very sluggishly, so i stopped the restoration process. If I let it finish, will all the messages be threaded or something?
when you use PIMBackup, it will backup the way it was and restore them the way it was. There is no option to choose threaded or not, it just backs it up threaded or non-threaded.
So yea, PIMBackup is the way to go!
The X1 got sluggish because it was doing something intensive. Let it finish before you make your mind up that it doesn't do what you think it should.
It's a superb piece of software, very well written and does exactly what it says on the tin. It backs up and restores all of your PIM.
Messages restored will be threaded.
After restore phone is threading restored messages so it's need a bit of resources.
Go into messaging->sms and watch, threads will showing in real time and on the bottom bar it'll showing which messages are processing now
Hi,
I recently did a hard reset and I wanted to save my SMS messages so I backupped them with PIMbackup. I succesfully recovered the messages, but the sorting is al wrong in threaded mode! I read somewhere that going to normal and then back to threaded would solve the problem, but it didn't
For example:
Other person:
Yeah, i'll be there at 17.00
Other person:
Sure
Me:
will you go to [somewhere] and if yes, when will you be there?
Me:
can i ride along?
that is .. wel.. ridicoulous, can i solve it in some way?
thanks,
Hitisj
Well. PIMBackup was created before Threaded SMS came to WinMo. It restores Received text messages first, then the sent ones so yours come last. I was trying to find a way to restore in chronological order too :|

Thanks for your reply. I think this is strange behaviour: Outlook on Vista sorts incoming messages by date too, not by the sequence they come in Oh well, MS...
It's the right way to restore SMS messages while in normal mode, and then turn to threaded mode to complete rebuild the all conversation threads. The messages would keep in order as they stay in the backup, resorting seen to be none sense.
Hi everyone.
I am using Handcent on my Legend for my text messages. Yesterday when I got a text message, Handcent gave out a general error and had to close. When I re-opened it, ALL my text mesages were gone!
I was looking into HTC support pages, and they claim that when automatic backup is ON, it automatically saves settings and sms messages which are restored after doing a "Restore to fActory settings". I'm a bit sceptical of this, and before I blow away all my settings for nothing, wanted to know if anyone tried this, and if it actually worked...
Cheers
I tried this two times. Once it works, secondly not! I have then no message in Message application, but there were my smss in sms widget on destkop!! Really strange. So I installed afterwards some sms backup applications and finally I recovered and backed up cca half of my 2000 sms.
After two years with windows mobile i started to hate it and was looking forward to android, but after this experience, I wanted to throw the Legend with Android out of the window.... my fault was that I trusted to HTC BACKUP, which let me down. I should make an additional backup of sms when I was recovering phone. Hope this helps .
It has... I'll give it a shot then. I have after this experience installed sms backup....

What applications/processes to people use to save/backup/restore SMS messages? I previously used SMS Backup (the version by Michele Valentini as there are others with the same name, and I'm currently unable to post links) but this now seems to have problems restoring (possibly due to gingerbread). Any suggestions?

SMS Backup & Restore. Download from Market. It's free and flawlessly working in Froyo and Gingerbread for me.

SMS Backup+ is VERY nice. I've used SMS Backup and Restore, as mentioned above, but SMS Backup+ offers some real nice features. It creates a folder called SMS in your gmail account and (can be set to) automatically store text messages in that folder. You can also restore back to the phone any time you want, but it does mean you've got access to them from anywhere you can access your gmail account, which I find very nice!
Obviously, you can't reply with an SMS from your gmail account, but it you leave your phone at home you can still check your texts online.
