I just ventured into the PDA world with a Sprint Mogul and it's been nothing but disappointing so far. I have been on the phone with Sprint and HTC practically everyday. Can anyone shed any light on these issues??
- Memory, says roughly 49 MB of which over half is taken when no apps are opened.
- Tremendous problems accessing mobile websites, such as my bank, which has a mobile site (I can see it, just can't get into it... well twice I did, then error messages).
- The phone seems to drop my e-mail services for no apparent reason... e-mail works, then all the sudden, asks for my user names and passwords, which when I enter, says it's wrong. Reboot the phone, and back in business.
- It will not download and use many of the sites/programs made for mobile (gmail, AOL instant messaging, youtube - gotta do something sitting in airports).
- Screen useless in sunlight.
- Locks up constantly. If you are performing a function, and something else kicks in (text message, e-mail, phone call, etc) everything locks up, and you have to reboot.

- Locks up constantly. (you get the point)
- I have to reboot roughly 6-7 times per day.
- If performing a function, and something else kicks in (phone call, message, etc.)--and it does not lock up completely--the current function is blown out and you have to start over.

- Battery life is somewhat poor. And it appears re-charging in the car is much slower than from AC electric at home.
- Because I do not use Microsoft Outlook (Notes user here), the sync is not possible, since everything Windows Mobile is via Outlook. I found a nifty, free back up program for the phone and back it up to the memory card daily. That works, but I can't "sync."
- The HTC Tilt from AT&T (basically the same as Mogul) has 100 MB of RAM, while the Mogul shows less. Any ideas why?
I love the phone and love the concept, but really feel that it cannot perform as HTC and Sprint say it should. Don't know if it's conflicting software, or RAM, or what, but the overall performance is very substandard for this type of phone.
I only have a few days to return it for a service cancellation or a swap, so not real sure what to do. I am very disappointed, because if it could infact perform, then it would be the answer to my PDA needs. Anyone else having similar issues?

I'm in no way a power user, i just like to **** around with my phone. However i don't experience most of your problems, however i will address some of the issue you presented us with
First of i would suggest running a cooked rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=385336 this is for dcd 3.0.4 its what i run), however if you don't want to for what ever reason then:
as for your first point (and last point) of memory we all know that it blows on the mogul and the tilt is a newer phone that is why i think that the tilt has more memory
The internet, i personally use pie normally, and i have been able to do banking and such with pie. however pie plus, opera and whenever skyfire comes out (demo video here http://www.skyfire.com/product/index/demo08) are some good alternatives
The email issue i don't know what to tell you, i have two gmail accounts set up on my phone, and one for my school email phone and they always work for me. There is a setting to have your phone remember your password, so maybe that will help
As for things to do in an airport, it is possible to watch youtube vids (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=343397), gmail i already talked about, and if you know the right .coms you will find aim (i use it all the time)
The screen is kinda bad, however with the brightness setting on one of the higher settings i can you my mogul in direct sunlight (true it's kind of a pain but doable)
Your lock up issue, i don't know what to tell you. Mine never locks up. I have my mogul on pretty much twenty for seven and like once or twice a week i reboot, but i don't have a lock up problem.
i found a program that will back up your contacts and such, i haven't used it and can't find the thread about it, but it was on this forum and people really seemed to like it.
sorry that you are having problems with your mogul, i think the mogul is a very good phone and i really like mine. Any issues that you have with your phone is already solved somewhere in this forum (thats how it was for me)

The moguls only has 64MB of RAM, of which some is required for the OS and various other functions. 24MB free is at bootup is a pretty good number for this phone -- and achievable.
Mobile websites don't seem to be a problem for me, maybe it is the version of PIE that you're running, are you using the stock ROM?
E-mail... never had that problem, maybe something is going wrong with your actual servers?
Turn the brightness completely to maximum in sunlight and it will be usable, just not perfect. You need something like SPB Mobile Shell to be able to access the backlight brightness quickly.
Install dcd's 3.0.4 to address the lockup issues.
Use TomTom, iGuidance, Google Maps, or some other navigation. You have to pay for Sprint Navigator monthly anyway.
Get mail2web free pushmail and sync to their online exchange. It's much more convenient that way anyway.
The Mogul is a generation 3 device while the Tilt is a generation 4 device. The comparison is like trying to put the 1993 BMW M3 against the 2008 Mercedes Benz S-Class four door saloon. There is no comparison! You'll have to wait until CDMA carriers have generation 4 or 5 devices and by then GSM providers will probably have generation 5 or 6 devices. Vicious cycle...

best thing you can do is just sit at your pc and read read read, and when your done read some more.
the people in here are truly good people and will help you with your questions and youll get it goin just how you want it. just takes alot of hard work to even half way figure this thing out. to me the mogul is the best phone out there and this site is the best one out there as well.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF WINDOWS MOBILE!
First things first. Read the upgrade forum for instructions on how to ditch the BS ROM that Sprint ships with your phone. Get on DCD's rom. Its screaming fast and doesnt lock up.
As far as your problems accessing websites and downloading things, 99% of your problems can probably be attributed to internet explorer mobile. Ditch that piece of crap. Get opera. Its worth the money or try to find some place to download the new opera 9.5 beta. There should be some cabs somewhere around here...
As far as your navigation slowing down your phone, again its attributed to Sprints crapware ROM that slows down your phone. Get on DCD's.
Make sure your screen brightness is turned all the way up. It could help you see. WinMo auto adjusts this setting sometimes depending on certain conditions. Always check first.
And as far as syncing? Are you just talking about your contacts? ActiveSync (on XP) and Mobile Device Center (Vista) will sync pics and vids and everything without Outlook installed. Or do what I do and get Outlook and just use it for your contacts. you dont have to use it for email.

Yes! I think this sums it up. If you find a user who maybe complained about their phone as their first posts before coming here, then search their user name in the search feature, you will find they changed their tune almost every time. Are you sure this is correct? Opera mini is at 4.1 beta, right? Opera full for windows is 9.5. Please correct me so I don't look for hours.

opera has two flavors for windows mobile, opera mobile which is at 9.whatever, and opera mini, which is at 4.1 beta.
opera mini is the best browser ive used so far on the mogul. i am a beta tester for skyfire, and while the video,java,flash, and sound support is pretty sweet, it doesnt feel refined for a mobile device like opera mini does. i like putting my web pages in mobile mode and scrolling a page at a time by using the directional pad. if skyfire could do this, then it would be my fulltime browser. until then, ill only use it when i want to see flash,java,video,etc...forgot to mention skyfire eats RAM like a slot machine eats my hard earned wages

kmart is right, two different versions. opera mobile is a software that you have to pay for as opposed to opera mini. opera mini is mostly designed to work on java based handheld phones (like razrs) but it works well on ours. The current version of opera that you download off of their site for windows mobile is 8.65, and its good but its a big piece of software and sometimes can eat a lot of ram for our tiny titans. check out this link, i uploaded a mirror on my site of the beta for you.
@kmart, i just got my skyfire invite two days ago. its definitely cool, but still needs some work. I love how fast it is but to be completely honest, i had no idea before i downloaded it that it used server side rendering. It loads everything i ask it to pretty perfect. I am happy with that for sure.
found one thing skyfire wont load though. speedtest sites. No matter which one, or if i have searched for it or typed it manually, it refuses to load a speedtest site. strange, huh?

agreed, the one thing worse than a stock winmo rom from a carrier is the stock windows operating system on your computer. effing norton....
Also, while MS does push outlook (and this is the first Windows Mobile/Pocket PC I've ever seen that doesn't come with a full version of Outlook on the disc... What's up with that?!), its not the ONLY way to sync.
You could get a free exchange server with mail2web which would sync all your stuff over the air to their server in real-time. It may use data (I'm assuming you have unlimited data) and add a little drain to your battery, but you never have to back anything up manually (constantly in sync) and you can access your information by going to live.mail2web.com from any PC browser, and anything you enter will be pushed immediately to your phone.
Problem with this method is that its web-based, so its not was smooth to use and enter info as a localized application (plus you're relying on having a net connection).
There are some open source and free outlook alternatives, such as EMClient ( http://www.emclient.com/screenshots/ ) which claims it will support direct sync with activsync like outlook does in the new version due out soon.
There's also funambol, which like exchange above, uses over the air sync routines so you don't need wires or even be near your PC. Advantage to this is that its fully customizable and can be synced with almost any desktop client since it uses an open source platform and based on the standard SyncML (from linux) protocols.
They have a free server at my.funambol.com you can use, or you can host your own to do some fancy configuring.
As far as locking up... Look, this is a powerful OS, and I've seen far too many people get into it without knowing what they're doing, and be instantly turned away (later going with something simpler and more spoon-fed, like palm or the iPhone). If you don't want to take the time to learn how to use it to its potential, this device is not for you.
If you do have the patience, you'll wonder why you ever considered anything else. Just for reference: I go for weeks without a reboot required, and my battery can last almost 2 full days of moderate use, using a live over-the-air sync (currently on funambol).
I have to second the notion of those that say to upgrade to DCD's 3.04
Been running that for a week now and it really is much more stable than even the stock roms!
As for the memory issues people need to remember that the memory use is dependent on what the device is doing...
You could have very few apps running in the background yet still wind up with very little memory if you have a lot of graphically intensive programs running. Hell you will eat up as much ram running a small launcher with 10 icons as you will by running any full program!
Every thing you see displayed on your screen eats up program memory.
Every today plug you run does too...
Background services like the GPS chip will eat up ram as well even if you have it shut off!
So you really have to be thrifty with what you have run by default and load things as you need them instead.
I also find it useful to reset the phone once in the morning to start off fresh each day.

can't stress enough how much better your winmo experience will be if you shut it down once in a while. And check your task manager too. you might be running a lot more apps than you are expecting.
Eh, that shouldn't be required.
Unfortunately, Windows Mobile cache files don't always let go of the memory when u need it most, and this effect varies from rom to rom.
DCD and no2chem's are both better at this than the stock rom.
But either way, if you run a tight ship, properly closing apps and running a strategically placed hibernate command every now and then, you should be able to go for weeks without needing a reboot.
Personally, I end up rebooting a couple of times a week, but not on purpose.
Usually because I actually have to turn the phone for a moment to either save battery or going someplace they don't allow phones. I rarely reboot "just because" anymore.
im running quite a bit of software full time on my titan and sometimes that software crashed (read: wisbar and wisbar desktop). this forces me to restart. but you are right, on my base config (running a custom compiled version of DCD's 3.0.4 currently) i never have to really restart. Windows mobile is great, if you just give it some RAM breathing room and dont turn the processor into a puddle of mush inside your phone trying to play crysis... it just doesnt work well...
IF the unit had the 128 ram the unit would avoid most of the problems people have with it...
WM has always been a system that you had to stay on top of the Ram. But that has always been because Ram was so limited...
Using HTC X Button set to close apps on X Press greatly decreases the problem of running low on memory.
Using the DCD ROM and the PPCG Kitchen, I was able to find a setup thats leaves plenty of RAM available.
The key was not to install too many Apps that need to run in the background on boot.
SPB Phone suite took the place of about 4 or 5 different apps so I could leave them out of the ROM.
I have found however that some graphic and data intensive apps work better if you do a reset first...GarminXT comes to mind.
If the unit had 128 Megs of Ram it wouldn't be an issue...
I also save a lot of problems by having an 8Gb SDHD card to install all the apps that don't require installation on the device...
my phone pissess me off from time to time but I am a power user. I use my phone for navigation, mp3, watching tv (slingbox, not that bootleg sprint tv), and your standard features. Everything is installed on my 8 gb memory card to avoid any weakness in memory, yet my phone freezes from time to time, screen doesnt work (rarely) and i get memory low messages when attempting to do certain things. Its the only phone that really fits my needs and i'm kind of overloading it with applications but as a power user, these are the issues I face. Some of your issues...seems like phone may not be setup properly? I would take it to a sprint store, let them look at it. Much easier to deal with someone face to face rather than over the phone.

Like others have said, use a custom rom; it's much cleaner. The stock rom out of box probably needs a few things added to make it stable. I've used the stock rom just fine (don't prefer to, but it works).
Sounds to me like a you may be doing a poor job managing your program memory. Simple things like the X-Button, help a lot.
Well after 3 weeks of use I have had it with my X1. It is the slowest phone I have ever come across.
Here are the problems im getting and I have just had enough of them
Phone can freeze when switching between landscape & portrait. Can take up to 2 minutes to figure out what its doing, sometimes its a hard reset
Fidilly interface, I use the SPB panel because of this which is great but everything else is just useless. Tried setting an alarm by rotating the hands? Its so fidily
I get a new message while im on my inbox and sometimes the message takes up to 2 minutes to load. Last night I was waiting 1minutes 43seconds for the message to open (yes I timed it) It just had that piechart icon rotating
Sometimes I cant open the messaging section. I click messaging and nothing happens. I can try to open it as many times as I want but nothing happens. I have to remove the battery..
By screen went green once, everything was green so I had to remove the battery to sort the problem
Doesnt always sync with my PC, no idea why
Cant remove hotmail contacts or sort the contact list because it just adds all my email contacts when I go online
Opera & IE are clunky and full of bugs. IE is slow as hell and cant open some websites. Opera keeps opening the virtual keyboard and changing between fullscreen and menu mode
Panels take a lifetime to load and freeze when switching between view modes
The crappy external speaker, who wants to hear a song full of white noise when you phone rings?
Battery icon - sometimes I have one, sometimes I dont
My signal on my phone seems poor compared to my old LG Viewty. Where I had a decent 3g signal I now get a poor standard signal, if a signal at all

There are a lot of things I do really like about the X1 but most of these are hardware such as the keyboard, the screen resolution, build quality, wifi, gps etc
I am seriously considering either swapping my phone via o2 or selling it and buying a new phone. I dont understand why interfaces and phones cant be as fluent as the iphone/ipod.
It does a lot of stuff yet the interface is as fast as hell. I am not a fan of the iphone itself due to its rubbish hardware specs but you can't knock the interface. Also I just got an ipod touch so there isn't much point in me having an iphone.
Personally i think the problem lies with WinMo as its very bloated and slow compared to proprietry operating systems or Android/iPhone.
Can anyone recommend me a good phone to get, I was looking at the Samsung Omnia but it doesnt have Wifi or GPS so its a no go really
Dude you must have a faulty phone, I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and haven't had most of the problems you have raised. However it was laggy and slow when I first got it and I still don't think the panels work fast enough to be really usable but once I changed the ROM it was MUCH better, more responsive, Opera actually makes browsing online a good experience!

The only faulty thing about it is the firmware, and when I went down that road with my Viewty being buggy as hell I got into the biggest of arguements with my network provider.
They didn't get what I was saying, they keep offering me the same phone as a replacement etc etc and I was nearly thrown of the network as they just winded me up so much.
This phone had high expectations from me and I have to say, it failed miserably. I decided to go back to SE after my LG as they were some of the best phones I had. But this phone just doesnt compare and I personally think its WinMo thats letting it down
i never experience any of the problems you mentioned above. May be it is a faulty unit.
Either a faulty unit, or filled with network bloatware! In short... not a problem of Xperia. When switching landscape to portrait it takes a second for me usually... at most 2-3 seconds. Same goes for other stuff.
I wasn't impressed with my Xperia at the beginning either... but after applying a few tweaks here and there and installing applications and stuff, it is by far the best phone ever! (and i am using the original rom - no cooked rom)
Maybe you should try installing a cooked ROM?
Either way... good luck with whatever phone you do decide to go with. I can, however, say with 99.999% certainty that most problems that you are facing are either due to a faulty device/firmware or is due to bloatware or something...
I did have the exact problems here, also did 3 of my friends who baught the phone.
It is crashing alot and is slow. However I think I will wait till the first firmware update.
But even if they didn't fix these problems, I don't really have an alternative phone, no phone has the specs I want except experia. I mean ofcourse other than win mo, because if it is a win mo phone you are seeking then know that all the win mo phones have the exact same problems, maybe less because they have been around in the market for a longer time, but they still do crash.

That's kinda shocking to hear. Have you tried tweaks and stuff? Maybe hard-reset the phone to remove all bloatware....

this is strange, my xperia is the best winmo phone I've had. stable like a rock, fast, no lockups, nice batt life... everything works great (and would do better once they update the rom with a better one)

Good luck with that. I hope you get it working perfectly! This is definitely a wonderful device and the fastest WinMo device.
I've never had the need to flash my set, so afraid don't know anything about it... otherwise would have offered to guide you through.
I have original rom and I think the phone is great! fast and solid!
101% something's wrong with YOUR phone only... althought i have my grumbles, but not so bad at all
Get O2 to reflash it, they will do it for free if you complain about lockups

It's easy, just install hard-spl and then choose from the xperia rom forum one that you like (my preference for now is Itje's HD v2.1).
Follow closely the instructions on the Hard-SPL and rom thread you choose and it will be a breeze.
I just flashed it to IT-Xperience 2.1 and the phone is a hell of a lot faster.

What is "IT-Xperience 2.1"? Google has 0 hits.
No need to hide. This phone has many problems, still many people seems to ignore them completely. No need to start the "It's your phone, it's strange, I use it a lot and it never happens" saga. The problems are there. And for everyone. The fact you don't notice some bad behaviours doesn't mean the phone is perfect or that your baby is exempt from problems. Let's start:
1) Suboptimal WI-FI performance. On a 802.11g wireless network, connected to an 8Mbps internet connection, the phone can't even saturate the badwidth of the network. Speedtest.net reports an approximate 2Mbps download capacity (EDIT for those who cannot distinguish: 2 megabits, not megabytes). Test it yourself: try to download something from a fast website and try to figure out which is your maximum download transfer speed. You will be disappointed. As a comparative, this means the phone can use 1/4 of the available bandwidth. A SonyEricsson Satio can fully use the available bandwidth, instead (someone told me "tell me a phone that can do it. Now you have one).
2) Stanby freeze: it's there. The phone freezes randomly while in stanby draining all your battery juice. Sometimes happens rarely, sometimes happens frequently.
3) Poor memory space handling: after just 20 days of use from a fresh ROM update, my free memory space on ROM is just 36MB. Without installing big things or hacking anything. Sure, there are fixes produced by the community, log cleaners, temp files deletion utilities, etc. etc. Still, it's a quite a disappointement: it means this phone can't work properly in a "factory state" for much time.
4) "Always on" features: nice, apart the fact in random periods of time the services just stop to download data. The Twitter client doesn't work well. Sometimes you can hear a tweet sound, sometimes it downloads data without the sound, sometimes it downloads nothing until reboot.
5) Poor stability in general: the OS crashes frequently. Less frequently than the first shipped rom. Still it's not very stable.
6) Poor support in general with the updates: finally the SMS stuck problem has been fixed but they spent 3 months for it without a valid solution. The camera fix doesn't hide the fact the sensor is defective.
I don't say this to start a flame, of course, but only because I'm frustrated with these problems. And people, instead of spreading words about them, just pump the hype, including some notorious web sites that have no scope but pushing the hype even further. But the truth is another: this phone doesn't work as expected.

Can't comment on all those, but i hear you, defo had some of them and i'm on my 2nd unit after 2 weeks.
With Nokia it took them at least 6 months to iron out the flaws in their released phones, defo the case with N95 & N96, i didn't expect it to be the case on this phone.
SMS fix? is it? or only in 1.66, because the hotfix's don't work on the 1.44 ROM

well, I don't pretend mine is perfect but there are more things to love than to hate about it. regarding the problems, I think you cannot generalize because I've never experienced some of your issues but I'm bothered by other myself. finally I guess it's just a subjective call anyway...
I had some of your problems when my HD2 was on the original 1.48 WWE Hong Kong ROM. However, since I flashed HSPL, Merlion LEO V1.90 ROM and Radio version 2.07.50.27_2, it's been faster and absolutely stable. No more freezing/"Sleep of Death"/etc...

That one really annoys me too. Still can't find a way to get video and audio in sync without manually adjusting the offset whilst encoding. And HTC still can't get the hang of getting Audiomanager to handle AAC files properly (ie sort albums in track order, or show.their album art). Still, it's a lot quicker than my Touch Pro was ; )

Return your phone and get an iphone/android device.
This kind of issues, even if I haven't myself had most of those you list, have been around with EVERY WM phone that has been made.
Of course WM is far from perfect, but as someone already said to me the advantages far outweigh them, and I can live with them and the need for tweaking.

It also depends a LOT of the software used.
I do get 1-1.5MB/s (8-12Mbps) transfer on wifi between the HD2 and one of my home computers, with WiFi remote access, and on balanced wifi performance. With Resco explorer, I get 150kB/s...
2) Never had one.
3) Depends... could be just normal, now that the album and browser caches have reached their limits, and would stop there. Stock ROM has a lot of useless stuff on it.

Sense is fine, but the vanilla Win6.5 fails hard.
And if this thread gets to about page 5, it would probably just turn into another Leo vs iPhone flame war.
For the WiFi "problem": ~ 2 MByte /s is just the normal average speed, even with my laptop I won't get much more on 802.11g .. It also depends on with how many other devices you share your WiFi-channel.

I think there are a lot of 'duff' units, this must be the case with the 'sleep of death' and the crackley call as many of had it but most don't.
I took mine back, got a new one yesterday, no crackles no sleep of death... yet
But true, there are always gonna be problems, it will take months before a near perfect firmware, sorry, rom is out

SonyEricsson Satio, for example. I download at 900Kb/s with it on the same network (using the same browser, Opera Mobile 10 Beta 3). Poor implementations doesn't mean it's not possible. Do we need 4Ghz quad core processors to use a wireless g network? Obviously not.

A bad behaviour, even when happens at factory settings is still a bad behaviour. You have a strange definition of "normal". Surely a phone that in 20 days saturate all the available space on the rom cannot be considered "normal". It's a poor implementation of things. A good implementation would have addressed it from the start by allowing the user WHERE to store that files or giving him an option to clear that files without an hard reset. No, it's not normal. Software design it's a much more complicated thing than those "normal" things.
You know you have problems when your best programs are Hd2tweaks, Bsbtweaks and Resco registry editor. And you are continually wiping out your system and trying new roms. Although Xannytech evolution was a good one.
Well sort of. Had the phone for about 15 months now, and at the pub the other day, a friend of a friend sees my phone and says "visit xda-developers.com" and find out what you can do with your phone.
Currently - Phone stock standard with UK Voda, been updated once running WM 6.5. (simply to get a longer battery life - voda uk arent too proactive at updates)
I use the phone as
1. A phone (calls/texts etc) and a wireless router for a laptop (when out of the office and no internet connection)
2. Sync with my outlook on pc (W7/ outlook 2010) (to keep recent emails on record for work)
3. Retrieve emails (work account and hotmail) on the move. Guess its important to have office software and some PDF software.
4. Web Browsing (Opera)
5. Camera and Camcorder
6. Occasional Facebook uploads of photos (re: new years eve drunken photos)
7. Sometimes access messenger (live) msn
8. I have a Skype account (not ever used it on the phone)
9. Occasionally run the odd game or you tube to waste time
10. Have never bothered to put music on the phone, but would be good when I run once a week to listen to some decent tunes or radio.
I have briefly looked around the site (well done) and see a multitude of options for things I never really knew I could do on the phone. (For reference I had one of the old PSP 1.5v which I continually played around with to update (flash rom) to use homebrew applications - so can follow instructions quite well)
So here are my questions...
In an ideal world, what would you suggest would be the best course of action for the phone and why? I guess this should cover os/radio/software etc. I have no preferences.

I have gone down the dual boot windows Phone 7 and Sd Android route. There is a good video tutorial by 96Edwy.
I dont think your Mrs will be impressed by you spending hours on the computer/phone when you could be doing something useful!
I have found that no matter what you do with this brilliant phone, iphone users will still think theirs is the best.

well i think you should try out android.
all the points you mentioned are covered by the os so you can do everything you want.
the difference to wm 6.5 is the much greater number of software that is available.
i really liked wm 6.5.5 on my hd2 with sense but since i am using android i'm really happy with my phone. just because developement on android goes on.
and it's running so smooth on the hd2 and everything works.
you should make a full backup of your wm6.5 rom with spb backup or something like that and just try it out.
windows phone is also great but i think the lack of a good display driver for multitouch is more noticable on windows phone than on android.
but just try it out and decide on your own. if you flashed everything one time it's really fast and you can try everything in one day.
I think it is a must to at least try dual booting Windows Phone 7 and Android. I am currently running Windows Phone 7 (NoDo update) and Android (AOSP CM7 - AmericanAndroid) and I LOVE it. You can get the power and customizability of CM7 at any time, and at the press (or a few presses) of a button you can go back to the smooth, elegant, sleek interface of Windows Phone 7 if you want simplicity and a more robust/unique UI. I never find battery life to be too draining on the SD Android, and there are tweaks to get it respectable on Windows Phone 7. And, this is of course all with the amazing MAGLDR, which allows us to dual boot this. I even have a couple other builds (MIUI and/or Sense) of Android I will switch to sometimes with just a few extra button presses in MAGLDR. So, I guess you could say I'm tri-booting even. Moral of the story, you can do so much more when you dual boot. The only thing I am missing out on Android being on SD (that I know of) is Clockworkmod recovery, which isn't as necessary since you can drag and drop from your SD card to back up system and data images. Well, I've rambled far too long and hope this helps you. Good luck!

there's no need for two cards just the right partitioning.
I suggest you to use the phone as is on Windows Mobile 6.5 till you get used to it. The HD2 is awesome even on the Windows Mobile. Next when you feel you need to do more, you need more updated apps, and more functionality on the HD2, you can switch to Android, which is available in various flavors- Sense & Stock. You will have the options to chose a ROM which would give what you need, and there will always be updates to the OS, to the apps it uses and also the functionality enhancement.
If Windows Phone 7 gets more apps and developers produce something good, you'll have additional choice here. WP7 is really slick on HD2, just the lack of apps and several bugs, specifically related to battery, etc.
Concerning outshining the iPhone, you have got wonderful widgets to outdo the iPhone Springboard. Similar apps are also available on the Android Market. Moreover you will have extra functionality like Bluetooth transfer between any devices, use of your phone as storage (pen) drive, for tethering (USB & WiFi) on laptop, transfering music, data or other content from any PC, no iTunes.
As mentioned above, you do not need 2 SD cards. I have my 16GB partitioned where Android gets ~8GB and WP7 gets ~8GB. Also, Hamsn, I believe the OP is already at this point, seeing from his first post that he's had it for 15 months and is now looking for suggestions on where to go from WM6.5. Either way, OP, I think you will be pleasantly surprised regardless of which route you take. There are so many options for the HD2 that it really is like a computer in your pocket. Just how you can load pretty much any OS on a laptop without big corporations locking it down, that's how the HD2 is (and how every smart phone should be!). This is off topic, but on that note, I suggest every HD2 owner go "like" the HTC page on Facebook and leave a post telling them how they better revise their new bootloader policy (with the locked EVO 3D, etc.) or we will never buy HTC again. We will never have a worthy successor to the HD2 if they keep this up.
Spot on drewden123. I am looking for something different than 6.5 (as been on this almost 17 months now). I think I will go down the dual boot route, (WP7 and Android) just getting myself a larger micro SD card to handle it. (as noted I will follow the partition instructions using a 16gb card)
I already know that WP7 will probably do my nut if it causes battery issues (this is the only bad thing I have to say about the whole phone since I had it), but I wont know until I try it.
I guess I will finally end back on a likely 6.5 /Android dual boot.
Just wanted to know if people thought I should not even try WP7 considering the need for activation being a slight pain vs what WP7 actually delivers on this phone.

i just tried it for some time without activating and sideloaded some apps. just to see how i like it. but then i went back to android on nand without dual boot to be able to use cwm recovery.
i would suggest you doing the same and if you like wp7 you can activate and install dual boot. but if you don't know if you will like it you shouldn't do the whole work with partitioning sd, activating and everything.
i went back because the multitouch on wp was much worse than on android and the battery drain was just too high. also i was not able to get an activation code.

Well, fwiw I do not have that much of a battery drain on WP7, and most ROMs have a bug/fix where if you go into camera, switch it to camcorder, then switch back the battery drain is fixed. Also, activation is a breeze if you do it over MS chat (say you're from US though, I think). The good thing about having the dual boot is that WP7 is only going to improve and get more modern from here. If you dual boot with WM6.5 the OS gets more and more stagnant and outdated. We should be getting Mango sometime in the coming months and I think DFT will have a way where you can actually update your phone directly from Zune like it's an HD7. And, of course, you can always keep a nice CM7 or MIUI for your Android boot option. Maybe I'm just so dazzled by having both the awesome UI of WP7 and the power of CM7 that I think it's the best way to go, but it all comes down to personal preference. If you need the features of WM6.5 go for it. But, WP7, like I said, is just getting better and better, and the only difference from NAND Android and SD is that you don't get clockworkmod. With WP7 and Android you can basically have an HD7 and an EVO in one device.

I can see already there are a few things I need to get used to on both OS.
I got my Geeksphone Peak a few days ago, and have already ran into some problems, that I believe some others may experience at some point in the future as well, when the device gets out to the public. I have therefore decided to make this thread to report issues and solutions, along with answering peoples questions about the phone.
First off, be aware of that the phone uses a standard size sim card, so if you plan to use it with a SIM card, you will have to get one of those old big SIM cards.
Second, you will without doubt want to debug your apps on the phone. The easiest way to do this, is by using the Firefox OS simulator v3, that allows you to push apps to the phone. To do this you will have to enable remote debugging on the phone, which was recently changed from enabled to disabled by default. Enable remote debugging by going to Settings -> Device information -> More information -> Developer. If you are using Linux, you will now have to add a value to the file /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules: 'SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="05c6", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"'. The idVendor ID is found using lsusb.
I do not know how to use remote debugging on Windows or Mac, and would be glad if someone would be able to contribute with this information. I will update this post when I discover more flaws and fixes

I received mine yesterday. To me, the build quality is mediocre. The back is quite hard to remove to insert the battery and SIM card. When the back is removed, I saw "Engineered in Spain", "Made in P.R.C". The screen is average. Perhaps I'm pixel peeping, but I can feel the grid of pixels when viewing images on it. It's a developer phone, but I did expect a better build.
Certainly order one if you are a developer.
I got my Peak two days ago.
Materials and assembly is more or less what I expected. Clearly not a Sony but it is not so bad, in my view.
So far I have only connected via wifi, do not use the SIM yet. Once connected the first thing to do is upgrade. The process of downloading a 100MB and install the update was fast enough.
However, after using it for a couple of days I've noticed a lot of problems with connectivity. The worst is that sometimes fails to reconnect to wifi after unlock.
It is always very quick to complain lack of connection: is unable to access the sites for Mobile Twitter or Facebook, for example, as does access to regular Google. It's as if only Google respond fast enough to keep active navigation.
Well, this is a beta edition and it will sure get better, but today is all that I can bring on the Peak.

Either of you know how well this works on t-mobile? I see that t-mobile supports the 1900 band in my area, but I'm still not sure about how well tmo will work in general (as I do leave this city on occasion). I'd love to know. Also, it's a pity that it doesn't do HSPA+ so I'd like to know about the speed as well if possible. Thanks and you guys are lucky to have the phones. I've been watching the site like a hawk since day 1 and haven't managed to grab one.
Push to Device on Windows/Mac
I know on Windows, push to device is not supported in the simulator as of now, I am not 100% sure if it supported on Mac, but it is supported on Linux.
the simulator was just updated to version 3 and should have push to device for every OS now.

I'm really enjoying it. No crashes or reboots in the day I've had it.

Do you think it's usable as a lightweight daily driver? I was thinking of getting one for my parents, I could experiment a bit, and they just use phone calls / contacts / sms.
Hello, I have order the Geekshone Peak and it got the day also delivered. Unfortunately, I discovered that the Rear camera does not work. The Front Camera is working without problems.
Although it can be switched in the menu from the front camera to the rear camera, but the lens is then this is not activated.
Is this normal fault at the moment? If the Rear Camera not currently supported by the OS?

I only own a Keon, but: These devices are for developers and geeks that don't get mad when something breaks, not your parents. Wait for a consumer device.

It looks like the Peak is using the same chipset with HTC Desire X, which seems to have an alpha version of CM9:
