[Q] Continued support for dual booting?

ok, Ive been using both android and WM 6.5.3 and frankly i couldnt think of a better combo, Ive spent months try to decide which one to move too and in all cases neither one wins out overall, then it hit me, why do i need to have one OS!
Android does everything i need socially, and WM covers everything i need for work and roaming the mountains so Id love to keep both
I guess what im asking you developers given that progress getting android and NAND working is this, will there be continued support for having android running from SD
so over to you guys!

interesting point, but i think android running from SD is sufficiently well progressed that if there were no more releases it would not be a major problem.
There current builds a very good for day to day use.
I would like to see WM ruinning from SD on android devices, because like many here I have inversted alot of time with winmo and have many apps that can not be easy replaced on android.
And because there is very slim chance of there being annother winmo 6.5 device ionly see a future with my next phone being android, so it would be great to have the option to roll back to WM every once ina while to use that app that you cant get anywhere else.

that is a good point, i hadnt considered that option but makes perfect sence as well, like yourself i have many much needed WM apps whichwill never exist on android so that option would equally be valid, my only issue would be i couldnt test this out for any length of time as i do need WM apps almost daily, after hours and out of work its always android running

is there anyway to dualboot android from nand? people dualboot windows and linux on a pc without needing to use a live cd every time. i don't know the specifics, but personally, i'd love to dualboot windows and android both from nand. while i just about always use android, there are times when i need winmo (few, but they do exist). that said, i'm still keen toward the benefits of having android running from nand (better battery life, no need to boot into winmo to transfer files, etc.)

I think NAND installation should be more important when an actual build will behave like it does on an Android native phone. HD2 with Android still can't record video at 720p and it still have occasional problems with camera flash. Sometimes 3G connection disconnects. When we will have a 110% working Android build for HD2 we should seriously think about flashing Android to HD2 NAND.

[Q] HD2 WP7 business user - problems and (hopefully) solutions

While WP7 appears to be a major upgrade for HD2 from the entertainment point of view (720p recording alone is worth the trouble), for the professional user it's a step back, unfortunately, so I am not in a hurry to give up Windows Mobile It has nothing to do with the amazing work done by DFT and others, but with WP7 itself.
Copy and paste is not used that often, but at times could be vital for heavy e-mail and Office users. But at least Microsoft is working on that. Much more important is the lack of internet tethering support - a hugely underestimated feature. With original HD2 and an app like Wi-Fi Router I have a hotspot with me anywhere at any time, but with WP7 Microsoft is totally against it, possibly under pressure from the carriers.
Lack of file manager that we are used to seeing is an annoyance, but not a game changer. I am also not convinced the WP7 keyboard is nearly as good as the original HD2 one, and the apparent lack of foreign language keyboard support is also a concern.
Frankly, I am surprised not many people raise these issues, with Windows Mobile being, in my opinion, the best platform for business user, giving us a PC-like experience. But the trend appears to be dumbing down the smartphones (meaning heavy bias towards entertainment) to get the all-important market share. My hope is that Microsoft develops a special business-user version of WP7with all those issues covered.
In the meantime I would greatly appreciate an effort by developers to solve at least one of these problems - INTERNET TETHERING, either by Wi-Fi or USB. The solutions I've seen so far don't appear to be workable, but we are grateful for all your efforts.
And, finally, one question that is probably easy to answer. Is it possible, after trying out WP7 on HD2, to go back to the original ROM (T-Mobile USA)? If yes, can someone please point me to the clear directions on that?

I'm sure I saw tethering on a MS to do list and get the impression it's less about being unwilling to do it an more about being unable, for now.
File Manager - there is one, TouchXplorer. More relevant is the difficulty in getting files on there - it can be done, but it's a faff.
I wouldn't argue that WP7 is more aimed at those who feel the need to share every sentient thought with 'friends' they don't even know on FacePage or Twaddle, but the Office tools are actually very good and with SkyDrive integration there are potentially some very useful ways of working.
The keyboard? Don'y like it especially but it's not much worse than the original. Having a Swype variant would be far better.
One thing not mentioned is the fact that WP7 is more stable and performs better than WM6.5.5.
There are a bunch of threads around on backing out WP7, a search should find something quite quickly but it's pretty straightforward.

bussinesmen always carry a notebook with them for heavy documents editing.
bussinesmen should have a corporate laptop with corporate 3g/umts dongle.
Real bussinesmen should have an assistent to do all their work.
However, the email client on WP7 is the best of all other platforms. Real full support for multiple folder syncing. Reading email is like reading a letter on a paper because of the clean and neat look. Just too bad it doesn't shows HTML.
There is always room for improvement and it'll get all the features eventually.

To be candid i love the keyboard and the smoothness of the system but everything else is half done. How i wish i could just combine the features of different os. If i could then I'll combine the functionality of winsmob 6.5 with the keyboard and smoothness of wp7 and then take the apps from android. Thats would be the almost perfect os of all times. But hey i guess i'm just a dreamer.

Hyellow, nowadays when they say "business user" (or "business traveler", etc), in America, they don't actually mean important businessmen, just people who use something for work - I guess I should've been more specific. Sometimes I carry a notebook, sometimes not, and I often need to receive and/or send emails with attached Word documents at different times of day and night. And I didn't even need a dongle with a great Wi-Fi sharing tool that I could also use to share internet with others.

You can forward mails... Just tap on reply, and it will ask if you want to reply or just forward...

It's actually mentioned in the first post of the LEO70 ROM thread. Basically, to return to WM6.5, you just flash a ROM as you would normally do.
If you want to return to a TMOUS stock ROM, this would be how:
1) Get the stock ROM you want to flash
2) Shut down your HD2
3) Switch on your HD2 while holding the volume down key to enter bootloader
4) [Optional] Clean up NAND using task29
5) Flash your stock ROM, 2 options:
a) To remove HSPL, flash from MicroSD card
b) To keep HSPL, flash over USB using ROM Update Utility (RUU)
If you choose to remove HSPL, be careful to use an original ROM for your region/provider.

I second this. Thats why im running android gingerbread. It is not perfect, but close. The main thing i am missing in andriod is a good office package. In wp7 it mainly designed for multimedia purpose..

Solution for problems with SD cards and/or random reboots
Many people are experiencing problems with SD cards and/or random reboots, and I think I solved mine (I am rather a newbie), so here is my report.
Few days ago I installed WP7 (thanks a lot, DFT guys) on my U.S. T-mobile HD2 with its original 16 GB class 2 micro SD card, using radio 2.10.50.08.2.
Installation went very well, the phone worked very smoothly and very fast, except it started freezing and randomly rebooting. Hard resets didn't help. Then I removed SD card and reset the phone - it worked very well and fast and did not have any reboots.
I tried reformatting the SD card to Fat32 (using free software SDformatter - it fully clears the card after WP7 use and removes partitions, make sure you put Format Size Adjustment "ON" in Options) and reset the phone with the card. It did not help, the reboots were the same as before.
So I decided that the 16 GB card wasn't good for WP7 and bought a PNY 4 GB class 4 card for $10 at Staples. I reset the phone with this new card inside. At first everything worked very slowly, but at least the reboots completely disappeared. In few hours everything became fast, except for certain things, like it would take 15-30 seconds for the camera to reset after shooting a 1 min video.
Finally, I decided to try something else. I reflashed radio to 2.15.50.14 with the original 16 GB card (reformatted again), and everything seems to work very well -it's fast, and there has been no reboots so far in few hours. The battery also seems to drain with a normal pace.

Interesting error message 2300 / thoughts on phone after 1 month

Just thought I'd share a curiosity I never saw come up for the Xperia X2 in all my searches. I bought the phone new from an affiliate vendor off a major e-merchant. The box looked a bit worn but all the original accessories were inside, and all the protective screen film, etc. appeared untouched. Every time I boot the phone, I get an error message:
Customization (2300)
Error during operation. Try again?
Hitting yes, I believe gets the same message, and "no" continues the boot. This carries with it several interesting curiosities. I don't know much about flashing and primary vs secondary OS environment or whatever but it appears the phone is entirely devoid of customization (bastardization?) by SE and is like a demo WM 6.5 clean install with a few differences:
- I still found some SE ringtones, and probably other stuff on the SD that came with the phone
- The thing came with Google Mobile App
- The bottom 2 buttons don't work (the toggly thing or w/e it is and "Ok"). Still working on this - suggestions appreciated.
I guess the drawbacks are that I don't see all the custom SE skins that some may find to be cool, and that the time resets with every reboot, which was a major setback until I got SmartTimeSync, which essentially made it a non-issue.
I'm potentially lucky because:
- the phone may or may not run faster, although full web pages do take a while to load in IE. For some reason, I didn't like Opera Mobile 10 - feel it's too difficult to get out of it / multitask, and didn't find it a lot faster. I can watch even an embedded youtube on a web page, which sometimes even plays without frame shake or w/e, when the phone is happy. Plays well on the google youtube app.
- Skype, in this day in age . Works well, although not through earpiece but speaker or headphone
- I forgot what else people complained SE crippled, but maybe those other things as well
I also wanted to say I really like the phone - it really does the job for me as far as the deal I get for unlimited data on a major North American carrier by using a phone like this if people know what I mean. And I am getting great usage out of it. IMAP email (still working on Exchange - getting certificate errors but this may be a problem with the server end. Kind of sucks though that I get a Microsoft product and can't get the Exchange to work), tethering is a breeze both cable and bluetooth, Google Maps with GPS - haven't tried any dedicated soft yet, got the X2 light thingy working. A lot of this may be old and tried for you guys but I couldn't get on the smartphone craze bandwagon because it's not affordable/worth it for me if I have to pay up in the subsidy phone then shackled to data plan contract game. A year or two ago before iphone 4 came out, I was just amazed at screen quality on the HTCs but was shocked by price tag and could never believe I could get a similar experience so soon. I love the way the letters look in IE on this thing all tiny in Cleartype. I'm an old school Microsoft fan, so this was right up my alley - I've never owned an Apple product, although I'm disappointed with the new Microsoft products like the new Bing map styling, Phone 7, Vista, Windows 7, Word 2007, etc. Anyway, thought I'd share this, and I'd be interested in hearing from the experts on why my phone might be behaving this way, thoughts, advice, etc.
In near future, hoping to downgrade ActiveStink so it can go over wifi and install Terminal Services client. That could be cool on a screen like this...

download sony ericsson update service from here install on your pc and follow the instructions on updating the device from the description of your problem it's a bad flash.

yes you will get the latest realease of the phone's firmware , (skype does not come pre installed) you can install it later again.

Skype does not work in the latest release. Then you cannot revert to the previous firmware under any circumstances.
This is a fact, it is your choice.
My advice is to let Skype go. First firmware is holding back the hardware and Skype doesn't work quite smoothly. My guess is this is why they ceased support, it was nice to know Skype was there but less then mediocre quality.
Put on the latest firmware and overclock the device to 1056. You'll find several useful tweaks on this forum. It will never rise up to what the hardware was meant to do but you'll find it a bit better than acceptable.
There is a workaround however, you can back up the current instalation with Resco then call it back if you need.

I aint no techie but in the past have used this site to upgrade the ROM/RADIO for my HTC HD2 phone as was constantly facing a drop in signal and the phone booting up etc...
My current details are as listed below:

some of my queries:

- Is the benefit with Android only to do with additional applications available in the MARKET (WIN6.5 hardly has any and most are charged!) or will i get a better connectivity/signal strength and a better battery life ?
- I noticed on a few forums about a dual boot with Android on the SD card but am not keen on booting the phone every now and then.. would rather stick to one - Android or W6.5
- I do have a problem with the phone sometimes while browsing with Opera or IE. The phone heats up a lot and then just shuts off or the screen freezes and I need to open the battery slot, get the battery out, reinsert and then start the phone all over again. Its quiet sad thing and yet I love the damn phone!

Do it, there is a tool that can do it for you without much hassle, nice simple gui. I would suggest doing the nand android method instead of booting from sd.

oh dear, that doesn't sound good, I'd suspect overheating leading to hardware faults. As an example I can browse and listen to music all day long with very little temperature change. Winmo or android.

Summary,,, if you want to change, change, if you don't, don't. Android wont make the phone "better" but it will give you new stuff to play with.
That being said I'd be wary of too much flashing since it sounds like you have possible hardware problems on the horizon,,be a shame to get stuck in an unflashable state.

I had the same dilemma a few days ago, ended up putting on the NAND rom of android and it obviously a lot better to play around with than winmo but the battery life is not as good as with winmo on. Still lasts a couple of days on standby with a little bit of use.
The rom I would reccommend is the one I flashed, Typhoon cyanogen mod 7 without sense but every thing works perfectly on it so far.

Once you have installed it set the cpu with SetCpu app to about 800 mhz and it works fine without getting overly hot.

Also, by tweaking the CPU VDD levels you will provide to keep your phone colder and squeeze some more juice from the battery: you can find all the instructions on the first page of Tyween's thread (the link above).

Before flashing I plan to save my contacts with msn mobile... it saves my contacts and sms's... will i be able to recover it in the same format after i upload android ?
noticed on some forums that gsensor is a problem... does it impact the functioning so much on android ?
One of you mentioned 'sense' will not work on android... does that mean the seamless touch that is there on w6.5 will no longer be applicable...
requesting all this information just to be double sure b4 going ahead with something major like this...

The version of android is 2.3.5, the latest version at the moment I think.
The G sensor works fine on mine I have been playing games which use the sensor.
The phone touch will work fine its just you won't have the htc customization of clocks etc.
I'm not sure about saving contacts but if you could somehow save the contacts with a Google account it would be straight forward getting them onto android.
So to sum up everything seems to work fine as it would on Android though the battery doesn't last as long, but it still lasts a considerable time for a smartphone.
If you follow the link for the Rom I posted, in there, there is a instruction document made by someone which is very easy to follow. Just follow it step by step and you should be just fine.
PS make sure you backup anything you require before starting the process.

Is there any sort of idiot guide to show me how to do this, I don't think it'll be easy as when I update the ROMs on my Desire HD
Also which build would one recommend, I want something he can use wiht any issues if possible.

thanks for your revert mate... and clarifying about the gsensor. When you say the standard HTC application like 'clock etc' will not be there... would that take away the weather background which I so like... is there something similar available in the android market to download at a later stage (i love the weather thing HTC has to offer)...
Never tried google to synchronize my phone contacts... is it done through USB or over the air using 2G or something like that (sorry am quiet a novice with gmail!). Will it sync my sms's too... ?
I have changed my battery and no longer use the original HTC one... as it would drain out in a few hours inspite of me using the phone sparingly. I now use a chinese battery from the last few months and it lasts me a good 1.5-2days at max...
Will my service provider in India 'Loop Mobile' be able to send me the new settings that are compatible with android ? Being a weekend I don't want to loose out on contact sync in the middle of the night if the data plan is not activated again...ne suggestions would be appreciated..

There is a clock-weather app in the market which is similar to HTC sense's.
Not sure how google sync works with winmo you would have to figure that out.
About the service proivder I can't be 100% sure as my first android rom on SD didn't work straight away with T-mobile uk but this typhoon one worked straight away, but if you had setting on winmo you should be able to get it on android.

hi there again... as mentioned in my earlier posts... i have sync my phone to msn mobile and hence all my contacts and sms's are backed up every night on msn... once i move to android.. will i be able to sync the phone again just as i did with w6.5 ?
I do have a gmail account but not sure if they have the feature of storing sms's along with the contacts in google mobile. I am frustrated trying to figure out an option for contacts and sms's together.. any help would be appreciated...

Oh Lord... I am so frustrated... spent the whole afternoon trying to figure out to save contacts and sms's online somewhere before i flash my phone but sadly no luck... just realised msn-my phone service has been deactivated and most other services are paid services...
Guess this is the only thing that is stopping me now from flashing the phone inspite of downloading most of the required files...

Hi Enigma075, a little off topic but watch out with flashing in case the issues that you've described get worse. The symptoms you're describing, phone heating and screen unresponsive are exactly what happened to my HD2 recently. A week or two after it started the screen became entirely unresponsive and now HTC are (hopefully) fixing it.
Have a search on google, a few other people have encountered this as well.

I recommend trying SD first.
Note that some users reported NAND android to cause bad blocks in the NAND. so if anything bad happens, you might not be able to flash windows again. Read a lot about specific NAND build before you try them.
SD builds cause bad blocks on SD card, which is easily repairable. on NAND, it's not easy, if possible.

thank you both for responding to my post. I guess I would go in for the SD first as its getting extremely frustrating to save my contacts somewhere and then put it back again on NAND plus the tension of bricking the phone completely...
Are you able to advise me on the latest link on the SD version ? Have a few questions on this method:
- Will the phone become slow in terms of usage ?
- Will I have to reload the contacts again when i boot it to the sd android mode ?
- Whats the battery response like ?

you can use titanium backup to backup your contacts, it'll save you quite sometime. alternatively, you can export your contacts to your SD and reload them again on the SD version.
Newer SD build are quite fast in terms of usage, not as fast as the NAND, but the difference is barely noticeable.. but that depends on how you use your device. Note that some games may not work on certain SD versions.
You can try the two versions in my sig, I've tried both for more than a month, and they're quite stable.
Battery consumption in standby is low in new builds, I get around 7 mA/h when the phone is on and 3 mA/h on airplane mode. some people experience even lower values. it depends more on your SD, and the network coverage.
in hourly terms, you'll lose ~1% per hour, and ~1% every two hours on airplane mode.

[Q] Bringing redundant Touch HD out of retirement! Q&A.

Ok so my first and main question is, are people still using their old blackstones, if so what for?
I'm EXTREMELY interested. I don't want to be another consumer who throws redundant tech away every 18 months if I can find a use for it. Besides it feels like a part of mobile history, the last of the resistive touch screen era, the new windows phone is too tiley, rigid and related to the disaster that was and is windows 8 and as a techie I like to tinker with things as such windows mobile 6 is just nostalgically beautiful. I could even still see myself developing an app for it in the future even now if I thought of something worth having because it reminds me of my beloved iPAQ which unfortunately I no longer have!
At the moment I'm running a Note 3 which is brilliant and HIGHLY recommended, in between I've had an S2, another good phone so as a phone the touch HD's days are well and truly over, It is however still a fairly decent pocket PC with GPS so at the very least I could still keep it in the car as a backup tomtom.
I first got my hands on an iPAQ 4150 (my reason for joining XDA!) a decade ago, I was 15 at the time and I'd coveted iPAQs for years so when I finally got one I felt like the king of kids along with my 5 friends and younger brother who also had various flavours of pocket pc (his Axim X5 - ironically now worth about £5 is sat on the desk next to me). While I used it for many things including videos, playing monopoly, universal remote, bible, reading ebooks and taking notes in class its main purpose was as a fancy MP3 player with that wonderful bass boosting app called Pocket Music!
On this basis and for old times sake I've decided that I wish to resurrect my Touch HD as a Pocket PC and second mp3 player.
This brings me to my next question, whats the largest/fastest micro SD you've managed to get yours to recognise? I just tried the 64gb sdxc from my note 3 and unfortunately no luck there.
One thing that has disappointed/shocked me somewhat is how difficult it seems to be to find all the millions of programs that used to be, handango was packed, and I've long since deleted all the things I used to have fortunately I did manage to torrent a copy of pocket music! Wahoo! :victory: guilt free it was paid for a long time ago.
So far, I've removed my 6.5 Energy ROM and swapped it for Duttys 6.1 XT turbo for the sake of speed (it was the ONLY 6.1 ROM I could still find - the original orange one having long since disappeared from their (and seemingly any other) website. While the energy home was beautiful it was laggy and drudgerous to use (im sure its fine on LEO) which brings me to my third question.
Does anyone know how I can keep touchflo but still use the default windows mobile 6.1 start menu? I like the touchflo homescreen with the clock and I would still find the weather tab useful over wifi so I would like to keep that if possible but I haven't found a way to have that with default start menu on dutts rom. Alternatively, could anyone point me toward the Orange Rom?
Last question, overclocking, if I remember correctly 670 mhz is easily achievable but at the time I fiddled with this (many years ago) we could only do it while plugged in. I'm certain that has been answered elsewhere but while I'm here, I might aswell add it to the list. Is it now possible to have the OC running on battery power?
To summarise; I want a mininmalist almost iPAQ like OS, windows mobile 6.1, few fancy bits, no social media, no crap, if I could remove facebook from this version of duts rom and other things I deem unnecessary I shall, I want it as fast as possible (my iPAQ was fast and simple with a 400mhz processor so there's no reason this can't be), with the biggest SD card I can find. I want to overclock it, and I'd love to know if there's anywhere that we can still find all the thousands of interesting old apps and games that seemingly used to be out there. I've even toyed with the idea of asking about windows mobile 5 although I dropped the thought when I realised I'd probably lose camera functionality.
And remember first and foremost, I also want to know.. How do you eat yours? :silly::laugh:

So from what I've been able to garner the Touch HD takes micro SDHC but is not compatible with the newer SDXC. While this limits us to 32GB it's still good news because the old walkman mp3 player I have been using was 16GB and these days the fastest top class 32GB micro SDHC card can be had for as little as £12.99! That means I can essentially double the capacity of my mp3 player for £12.99! Clearly, there's still life in the old phone yet!

I still use mine as my mobile phone and for Tom tom and storing passwords. It's gone through a few batteries and a new stylus and a new screen. It constantly gives me the shixs because it's a slow ass phone. I'm just waiting for that perfect unicorn rainbow encrusted replacement phone. Thanks for recommending the rom, I'll try it out to see if I can be bothered putting up with this hunk of junk a bit longer.

weather works on mine with wifi.
Holy crap the touch hd is a slow phone. Everything takes at least 3 seconds to respond when clicking. THere must be a quicker rom... I did install the sense 2 version.

I installed the 6.1 weather one. and I overclocked it using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747813
The weather didn't work at first. I dunno what fixed it, but I turned off location awareness in settings on touch flo. then i went to weather deleted all the extra cities, then i updated and turned on location services when it asked and it worked. may be a fluke.

geez the touchhd was a dumb phone. I still am using it because i'm too cheaparse to buy a new phone. But damn... iphone killer it was not. Slow piece of rubbish with a bad camera.
Spent ages trying different variations of manilla and boy are they laggy. A bit better with overclocking. so tried winterface, point ui, spb mobile shell, cHome. Finally the today screen with resco plugin is the quickest. I can't believe i've been putting up with spb and touchflo all this time instead of the today screen.

I bought my Touch HD in december 2008. I have been using it until september 2015. Reason for replacing it was a standy time of only a few hours. (I ditched my Motorola A780 for the same reason btw.) I bought a new battery, but that didn't solve the problem. I was running the WM 6.5 Energy ROM, which made it more touch friendly than the original WM 6.1.
The Moto X Play I have now looked ridiculously big at first, but now I am used to it the Touch HD seems ridiculously small .
I liked using it, but noe I have more reasons to not want the Touch HD anymore: speed (or lack of it) and the non-capacitive, scratch sensitive touch screen.
I am not into replacing a phone every one or two years. I think 7 years is a nice lifetime for a smartphone. So my Moto X Play has at least another 6,5 years to go.
I know I am kicking an old topic, but it's an old phone too. I wonder if there are still people who use it as their everyday phone.

It is permanently in my car always on the charger, serving as music player and backup phone.

I'm still using mine
I've tried the modern Windows phone and Androids but they just don't have the functionality that ~I need. I like being able to use my fingernail on the touch screen for better accuracy than a great big fingertip. I like having a full QWERTY keyboard like the Resco keyboard without constantly having to shift from numbers to characters to symbols. I like the drop-down menus and I like the fact that I don't have to search for the phone app to use my phone as a phone.
The only downsides are the reception in poor signal areas is not as good as my wife's Samsung and the OPERA browser doesn't work very well but then I have a laptop for serious work.
I somebody would bring out an updated version of this phone running Win 6.1 mobile then I'd bite their hand off and upgrade but as it is I'll stick to my Touch HD as long as I can keep it running.

Use all the time
I use mine every day for telephone, email, calendar/diary syncs with OUTLOOK, contacts, word, excel, as a clock, as an alarm.
I use it occasionally as a SatNav, read the Bible on it.
It's now getting a bit long in the tooth and with 2G/3G starting to get switched off I'm now looking for a way to migrate all my stuff including Win Mobile 6.1 to and Android phone. If anybody has a good way to upgrade an Android phone to Windows Mobile 6.1 then I'm all ears.
