Several Questions on Nook Hardware for a Port... - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have decided to try to port a certain ROM to the Nook but I DON'T have a Nook myself so I, both, cannot test the ROM nor do I have all the info that I need.
1. How large is the internal storage? (How big can the ROM be?)
2. How can I make an SD bootable for the device out of this ROM?
3. Who's willing to risk their Nook and possibly brick it (I know very little about the nook...) to test my port?
I want to buy a nook but I'm waiting for a decent deal in craigslist. Most sub $180 nooks tend to sell within a few minutes of being posted. So for now... you can be my guinea pigs.

Getting my Transformer, Whats your suggestions?

Hello,
Week ago I ordered ZPAD T8, got one with defective touch bug. So shipping it back tomorrow to China.
Instead today ordered an Asus transformer (In Israel charged me 650USD...Not cheap)....
Should arrive within 2 days...
whats your suggestions for:
-- Rooting?
-- Best performance, look and feel Rom?
-- Keyboard Dock? How really I need it? and where get it at cheapest rate online? (free shipping?)
-- Anyway plug to it 3G USB modem? besides wifi spot/mifi....
Any more suggestions, appreciated
Thanks!

welcome. Im not rooted nor have i tweaked my transformer yet, but i do snoop around a lot in this forum. Its become one of my 3 DAILY check ins
just look around and read up son some stuff.
You should definitely buy a docking station. That the biggest point of the TF.
- Rooting NVFlash: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123429
- ROM: ROMs are all based off Honeycomb. Not much are changed for the most part. The "Prime" series ROM are a good choice but it's not updated to the latest OTA (8.4.11) yet. It should be soon. So by the time you get it, look out for Prime 1.6.
- Meh. It's up to you, I don't have a dock.
- 3G USB. You need the dock. The tablet itself does not have a USB slot, the dock has two. Your only other alternative is to tether via your phone.

Depends what your main usage fot the TF will be, as a tablet its pretty decent, but only has a micro SD card and mini HDMI, it is more versatile than the ipad with regards to the file system etc, combine it with the dock and proper mouse and you have a totaly different beast, it instantly becomes a fast capable netbook. its like a macbook air and ipad all in one. Even the 16gig with 2 32gig cards will be sufficient with all the cloud based storage available. I have a 1TB drive plugged into mine on the desktop. This is the ultimate system at the moment and if apple had thought of it that would have been it game over. Its never gonna compete with the macbook air on speed and beauty but blows it away on versatility. If microsofts and googles cloud based office take off it will be perfect. A recent survey I read said pc sales were badly affected by tablet sles because tablet owners were rarely using their pc's, with this you have the best of both worlds. As a android tablet its as good as the rest with price point probably better. With the dock its way ahead. Mine was £429 with the dock bundled both B50 series, no problems with either, slight bottom of screen light bleed but no worse than my ipad, and rarely visible. Enjoy your TF and grab a dock, its superb quality and looks great with the Tablet.

If you want to use a versatile all round performance of a tablet+netbook, go for TF. If you want only stylish performing fast tablet only, then I suggest Galaxy Tab 10.1
Depends on your usage really. But TF gives an excellent value for money for its given performance and features.

What I did to root my Transformer (when it was stock) was use Nvflash. It roots your stock 3.1, and gives the option to install ClockWorkMod over the default Asus recovery, keeping the stock ROM.
After that, I copied over my favorite ROM and Kernel onto my 4GB Micro-SD card, booted into CWM, and installed them!
Every ROM you install comes rooted I believe, and because all Kernel's and ROM's don't alter the Honeycomb OS too much, Hebrew support should be there.

[Q] Installing HC and restoring back

Team,
I have whats probably a very basic question, but since I have 3 other tablets its hard to keep them all straight.
I bought the wife an NC, she sees the things I do in Android HC and likes what she sees, so I found the instructions for putting it on the card and bootnig.
SO FAR everything seems good, BUT she doesnt like having to swap out the card all the time (go figure)
I know that HC can be installed as the primary boot OS on the internal "drive"
I also believe that even after that, if she wanted to we could probably restore her back to out if the box, but my question is , can anyone point me to one or 2 places that might have a step by step walk through on those processes?
On my GTAB one of our devs has actually made a gtab for dummies site that walks you through several different FW functions, is there anything like that in the NC?
Even if the instructions are buried in a threaad I can do that, unfortunatly my work has picked up so much I dont have the time to read all the threads.
Personally I think the NC is probably the best value in the 7" market, and have referred many folks to them. My wife even wants to buy the boy one for thr 'book reading' function, I just have to figure out how to manipulate them 1st''any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
J
My suggestion: Drop HC. It is buggy, and slow. If you really want to have HC, flash this using ClockworkMod:
http://www.multiupload.com/71K84XF6BF
And then push this to /boot:
http://www.multiupload.com/3D9WSPUAUZ
Iking,
Thanks for that.
Now the other side of the question.
If she hates this, is there a documented method to restore it to out of the box?
I ask because on 2 of mine I know once I update past a certain point there is no going back.
Thanks
J

Can we run CM7 off a SD card?

For Nook Color you can run CM7 directly off an SD card withouth touching the internal emmc:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
Has anyone tried to do that for the Nook Touch? It's an obvious thing to try and I couldn't find any reference to it when I searched the Nook Touch forum, so I assume it does not work, but I thought I should ask...
First of all nothing is impossible. But you see Nook is avaible on market since 4-5 months i think. And there wasn't any breakdown bigger than rooting it ;( mayby working market can be counted in but it still is just a small thing. So in my opinion we just don't have a expert involved/eknowledged enough (xboxexpert maybe) to make a update for you nook (2.3.4 even?).
The other problem is it doesn't have sense yet. Mayby android 4.0 will bring us some easier ways? I am not expert unfortunetly.

I guess I didn't make myself clear. The key reason why it's so easy and convenient to rule alternative ROM off sdcard on a Nook Color is because of NC's bootloader; by design it boots from any ROM off an sdcard, and only when that fails/not present would it go to emmc.
So what I'm really asking is: Does the Nook Touch have the same/similar bootloader? Unfortunately I don't have one so I can't try it, which is why I ask the question here...
Thanks!
I'm not sure at all but I guess that it has a similar bootloader as some tools like TouchNooter or Noogie start from sdcard
Yes tried it and posted about it here several months ago. It boots but without specific driver support doesn't get too far (no graphics). I even tried using the nook kernel for grins on cm7 and it only got a hair farther in the process.
Bottom line it needs drivers in the cm7 codebase to work. It should be a straightforward effort, however, one that has little roi for me personally.

Fair enough, I can see your point and thanks for the info.
Well, that is the situation now. We have some attention on the NookTouch at the moment. If we can get CM7 on there we've future proofed it a little. Just think of those other electronic devices from the past to compare with.
Is there going to come a point where a rooted NookTouch won't be able to run newer Android stuff? That's my only worry. It would be handy to be in line with other CM7 users. Sometimes something doesn't work. Not a major disappointment, but a bit of a bummer.
Couldn't find your post with the info you mention:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=93655130 ,unless it's buried in a reply somewhere?
I have no idea how the CM7 people get drivers for devices, whether they pull them out of stock ROMs or what I don't know... will have to search.
I don't get it, what do you expect to gain from CM7 on a Nook Touch?
This device has nothing but wifi and a fundamentally slow eInk display,.. there's no GSM, 3G, Bluetooth, Audio, GPS or Camera
While CM7 and other roms can make things run smoother on normal devices with an LCD-type screen, this won't help the Nook Touch with it's eInk screen at all.
All those fancy themes, with transparency and cool animations will never ever work properly on this eInk display, it cannot be solved trough clever programming.
Are there things in NST with its 2.1 that doesn't work? What does 2.3 offer that is of any use to the NST? The only thing I can think of would be the numeric screen lock..
The few developers that are showing interest in the NST are much better off putting their skills into writing tools and apps specialized for the NST and its eInk.
Hell, for starters, give me a web browser that actually supports pagination instead of scrolling
The only reason I'd be interested in upgrading the OS to 2.2 + would be the ability to use apps like apptosd. No matter how I tried I've been unable to get linktosd to work for the Nook.
Good screen locking is a must for people who may have unwanted people fidgeting on your ereader, and I do agree regarding the browser too. And maybe a good email program that makes the email fit on its width (k9 is the best so far, but usually emails stretches sideways...

Among other things: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1105497
cm7 means for me future proofing, easier to develop new things because we're all on the same page.
I think if it doesn't happen in 5 years time the nook'll be on the shelf obselete because no new software is made for 2.1 devices anymore.
When i get back from holiday i'll try to duplicate what someone did before and host an image of cm7 that can be written to sd with logging enabled to show what drivers are needed. It's a good point that devs who'd normally work on cm could be doing better things like partial screen updates.
If more android eink devices come out there will be more wieght to the cause. Personally what i really want is an eink android phone...

I plan on replacing my NST long before 5 years have passed. For one, the battery will be dead by then
There's a new Pearl eInk player on the block, Sony PRS-T1, so yes, there are more and there will be more Android eInks
don't get me wrong, if an android phone with eink comes out i'll drop the nook in a flash. But even so, having cm7 is useful. I don't like throwing things away. Also, theres the resell value. it makes a difference when selling it down the line. I'd rather have something useful even if it's not me personally benfitting from it.
I don't like that whole, i'll buy something new again, i enjoy the upgrade cycle trap.
I enjoy getting new toys but i also like things that last, and the latter makes more sense.
I haven't done much dev before but i think i'll give a go with this, checking out that kernel hacking thread and looking for ways to log the boot. If nothing else it's good fun
Personally, I do not think CM7 would be the best for Nook. I think this rom is too much "phone related" which would result it big battery consumption. Beside the kernel/rom update, could you name 3 things from CM7 missing on nook STR?
Well built in tablet ease-of-case?

True, a CM7 port would need customising to remove the phone stuff. Personally I removed the phone and dialler apks from my rooted Nook. They run on a rooted Nook just the same as a CM7 port would.
1) Any apk that needs a newer version of android. I did find something the other day like this but I can't remember what it was.
2) Being on the same page as other CM7 mods; you can port ideas more easily, whereas the knowledge for NookTouch is a very small community
3) I think it could become a dominent thing. Less confusions with NookColor and the B&N software. More resources for help.
4) The B&N software could cause unforeseen problems down the road with new software of the future. Who knows, there could be a new killer app that clashes with the B&N software and B&N do nothing to fix it, for example.
^ Note that few of the reasons are about what functionality currently available. I've seen it plenty of times; buy new tech, tech is perfectly fine, phone becomes obselete because of the software and no documentation, have to buy a new device even though there's nothing wrong phyically with the old one (software hassle only). For all we know, a new standard for ebooks could come out next year, B&N choose not to support it and the only software around to read it is only available for Froyo. Get me?
You have a point. I'm lucky enough to blow money on the upgrade cycle, why do I care about other people after it gets sent recycling to Africa? I don't know, it seems like a simple bit of work. I agree that effort shouldn't be redirected away from other more important efforts.
edit:
+5) We could move the `USB Mode` notifier more easily so the Nook is still usable while charging.
+6) We can more easily modify WiFi ability to connect to peer-to-peer networks rather than just access points. This means no need to carry a MiFi portable access point in order to use TetherGPS. With stock Nook rom the Nook only sees accesspoints.
I think lets add:
1) Android 4.0 supports both tabs and phones, and your Nook it honestly more like a tablet that a phone, and really many, many, MANY apps will be compatible only with 4.0 (IMO only)
2) We need somebody to write that system right?
I would go more for a good customization ROM oriented to an eInk Android device... The latest apps for tablets will be all LCD oriented, and it would be much more useful a custom android that removes all animations, allows correct paging and lateral buttons to work propperly, etc...
Looking forward to an ICS port on NST!

I'm pretty sure the Nook doesn't have enough resources/power to run 4.0, and probably not even 3. Then again, I'm new to android and tablets and rooting, so I might be wrong.

Cyangenmod nightlies

I have a couple of days before I have to get back working at veggie harvest. I want to mess with the Nook SD card a bit and I noticed the nightly versions of Cyanogenmod. Are these experimental versions of Cyanogenmod or are they the stable version with additional work done on them? I splurged and bought an additional SD card so I could mess with Cyanogen and not trash the working card.

Nightlies are unofficial ROM's with various developer's fixes to problems that may, or may not, have anything to do with the Nook Color. They aren't advertised as stable, or even usable. They just have the latest updates made to them. That said, most of the time the nightlies won't cause problems, but there's no need to install them unless you just like to live on the bleeding edge. The best thing to do is watch the nightlies users thread for problem comments and decide for yourself when and if you want to install one.
OK! Thank you! I'm more of the kind that wants to live on the dull edge, very dull, in fact a flat edge with no sharp corners if possible. I got the Nook back from the sticky hands of my grandson, he has himself a real nice 16GB Nook tablet now. Did a bit of bartering for it, now he has to sign up and learn how to do the Andriod changy thing with it. Maybe it will keep his mind off of the girl friends for a bit.

[Q] Is there anything i should/shouldn't do with newly rooted sm-t530nu?

I got a Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 sm-t530nu for Christmas and I quickly rooted it using the Chainfire method with Odin. I only made backup images after I rooted the Tablet. is there anything I should be aware of that can break my tablet and or screw it up? I am an amateur when it comes to android and I will admit I don't fully understand it. I grew up on Windows and this is quite a large change. I have not been able to find information about any ROMs for kernels that work with the tablet. I have downloaded some apps that have to do with setting the CPU speed and I downloaded greenify and some other things but I have not been able to overclock the CPU at all because I don't have a ROM or kernel that will allow me to. Are there any tweaks that I can do to make this faster? I have changed to read ahead Buffer size and I've got some increase In speedbut that is all I have been able to achieve.
Can anyone recommend some essential apps and maybe some ROMs and kernels that will work for this tablet? Are there any good theme apps to personalize my tablet. As i said before I'm basically lost and feel like I'm out of my element and would love any info anyone can share with me. I have been reading a lot on the forums her but a lot of the content is above my head and i don't have a good understanding of it.
Hopefully you can help point me on the direction to making this tablet more modifiable and I can get a new ROM that allows me more control over my device.
Sincerely,
SalvelinuxFontinalis ☆
If you did a backup in recovery, you can look into xposed. Also, Nova launcher is a good replacement launcher to the standard touch wiz.
Thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it.Can i ask what xposed and nova launchers are. Btw i only backed up my phone AFTER rooted it. Also my tablet has no SD card slot and it only has an internal storage so if I do a backup on my tablet and later on it goes into boot loop or is messed up in some way will I even be able to use the backup I made since it won't be on an external SD card?

SF,
hi, just a thought, there's no need to overclock, the tab at stock is fairly well balanced. That being said, it's ALWAYS more fun
to put more bells and whistles on the bells and whistles :silly: . Keep the backup of you stock rom safe and sacred, and on all
you storages, internal, external, usb. You have a sm-t530nu your sdcard slot is by your volume buttons, if it isn't there, you have
a knock-off.

Thank you for giving me some new info I really am appreciative of your help. I guess you're right the processor is quite nice as it is. I was just hoping to get it up to 1.4ghz and see if that would would be stable but if it can't be done it can't be done. I wasn't quite sure which area to post this in, so I apologize for that mishap. Can I keep a backup of my stock ROM on my PC and on a USB stick and use ODIN to flash it back onto my device IF I have bootloop or soft bricking?
Also, I can't find the SD slot. I know it's not a knock off because I bought it from Shoppers Drug Mart which is a large chain of pharmacy stores that also sell limited amounts of groceries, electronics, perfume and beauty product, magazines, and various other things. lol It's not a chain of stores that would sell a knock off.
The NU is the Wifi version. Nowhere on the box does it say it has a SD card slot. On the internet when you look it up on wikipedia or look online anywhere to find the specificatins it claims they all have extra storage capabilities but this strictly WIfi verision one definitely does not and has no SIM card slot either obviously.. It has only 16gb internal memory and 1.5gb RAM. I was really upset when I got it home and found out it had no slot. lol
I was wondering if maybe inside there was an area that could take a large SD card...But I can't find schematics for it anywhere. I would also love to make it 2gb of RAM if possible. But I have a feeling it would be difficult to tinker with this in comparison to what Im used to, which is building windows PC's. Linus/Android seems quite a bit different so I'm having trouble getting a hold on the whole thing but it's exciting to learn about an entirely new world of devices and programming that I never really paid attention to until now.
So anyways, yah It's upsetting to not have the SD capacity I desire. Maybe I can find a way to modify it?
Thanks for your help "M"! It is very much appreciated. I'm very new here but I can tell you know a lot about Android devices and that there are many other people here who have a lot to offer in terms of teaching and pointing newbies in the correct direction.
Sincerely,
SalvelinuxFontinalix
BTW Moonbutt! Do you know of any good stable ROMS or even kernels thats are compatible with the SM-T530NU that will allow overclocking??? I haven't found any ROMS specifically for this device.
Thank you Moonbutt!

I'm sorry for posting in the wrong area! I apologize for that mishap. I actually DID find the SD slot after looking where you told me to check. I didn't think it had one because on the box and in the manual it said nothing about having an SD slot. Also the Survivor Case I have which is like an Otterbox and keeps the device quite safe, has little flaps for waterproofing you can lift that let you use headphone jack or plug in the power cord etc, or a flap you can lift to use the camera. But there was no flap you could lift for the SD card. And I couldn't find schematics that proved the WIFI version had an SD slot.
So yes I found the slot and I'm so happy you told me about that and that I took it out of the case to give it a good check! lol Thank you so much for that info! I likely would've gone on for months without finding that SD slot! I've had it for like a month and didn't find it until you gave me that info!
I have another question for you Moobutt! You seem to know a lot about devices and Android/Linux etc. I'm new and know nothing and my forte is using/building windows PC's. It's very different to me to learn about Android and to use a Tablet instead of my PC but I'm liking it more and more as I learn to modify my device and personalize it in ways that are really cool.
Do you know of any ROMS or KERNELS for my device (SM-T530NU) that will allow me greater control over my device and specifically allow me to overclock my processor a small amount... from 1.2ghz up to 1.4ghz or so...? Or am I out of luck with this device? I hear there are not many ROMS or Kernels for it because everyone bought the more expensive and high end tablets and made ROMS for them instead. I got this for 117$ US brand new so I can't really coomplain about it. I find it works very nicely but I'd like to boost it a small amount. How would I go about it? IS it even possible?
Thanks for your help "M"! I appreciate it very much!
Sincerely,
SalvelinuxFontinalix

SF,
hi, spend some time using the XDA search function and reading through tutorials and the like.
Learn how to navigate device forums such as this one for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.
Currently the two sections containing rom developement information are a mish-mash for all the versions. 10.1 8.0 7.0
Other forums will have a better breakdown for size/versions, ALL forums have general and q&a sections where all the good juicy
entry level learning goes down. Read though as many complete threads as you can stand in one sitting or until your eyes pop out
and roll away ! :silly:
Seriously though, read, read, read ! It would be a hugely good thing for you to get solid on Linux and Android knowledge
to add to your arsenal. Just like working with windows or mac , learn your terminal !! An absolute must ! Do your self a huge
favor and try to find a good deal on a laptop with Linux already on it. Find every tut you can find, fire up your terminal and get learning.
As to roms and recoveries sub77 has Philz and TWRP available for the sm-t530nu.
As to roms sub77 and Metallica both have offerings, always read through the threads, especially the OP = original post.
Welcome to XDA !

Thanks!

Thanks AGAIN! For your help! I'll learn to navigate the device forums and look into the tutorials that are important and I'll look for those Q&A sections you mentioned. It looks like I have a LOT of reading and learning to do! Haha! I'm also going to check out the forums and look for info about the ROM's and recoveries etc!
I only have one laptop that runs Windows 8.1 but I can dual boot with Linux if that is useful for learning? I can't afford a cheap laptop but one option would be to install a brand new hard drive in the laptop and install a Linux OS on it. Is there a reason you say I should buy a cheap machine with Linux already on it? Or can I just use my current laptop with a new drive and a Linux OS on it? Which distribution of Linux would you recommend ?
By the way. Thank you for being kind and pleasant and for offering real information that I can actually use and for not making me feel like a complete idiot for asking for help. I've had some pretty rude comments from people on another Android forum (not XDA) so your help and politeness is very much appreciated.
It looks like I have a lot of learning to do I better get started if I want to learn how to master my Android devices! I really hope you've had an awesome weekend and you have a great week!
Cheers!

If your gonna build roms and stuff linux is for you I guess. But all you really need is windows, with samsung drivers installed, adb installed(useful for sending commands. Look around on youtube for a howto), Odin(great for fixing a tablet in a bootloop/flash back to stock), and there could be more! Most things for android stuffs/tools work on windows. Linux can have a few things that work but since you still have lots of learning todo windows should do for now. Once you get into installing recoveries and custom zip roms you should be good to go on customization part. Heck I was new back in august when I got my tab s(I help around on other forums such as the tab 4 forums) and I sure learned a lot. I can now make bootanimations in samsung format and I have a basic knowledge of themes, and decompiling and recompile apks. But really you just need to know how to save your tablet from bootloops and install custom roms/recoveries.
