Forgive me as I am by no means an expert android user, but while reading through a lot of the MT4G developer forums I've seen a lot of talk about custom kernels. I was just wondering what the pros/cons of a custom kernel are and what the best custom kernels are.
I am currently using CM 7.0.3. I don't know much about Linux or android other than some basic stuff which is why I am asking.
Thanks!

Thanks. I think I'll stick with stock kernel for now considering my battery life usually lasts me well over 24 hours. =)

Since my rom isn't out yet I've decided to move the thread here. I'm leaning towards the miui interface as of right now and am testing a miui rom to get acquainted with it and familiar with the guts of it. I got to say that it's very zippy. I had thought about putting together a senseless rom that would be stripped of all unnecessary bloatware and good on battery life not to mention fast. After testing miui for the past day, I'm leaning more towards miui. Out would be relatively easy to compile a rom based on the stock base, but it wouldn't be fresh. I'm still waiting to hear back bout using the name "Light Speed" before I actually make it the official name. Although the idea is to make it light with speed. Essentially you would have to install all your favorite apps but the crucial apps for the operation of the rom would have to remain. Afa launcher and lock screen, I'm still deciding and am open to suggestions.

Are you planning on compiling from source, or pretty much ripping and tweaking different aspects of ROMs into a new compilation?
Hey, I would like to help with development on this. I believe you're looking for collaboration? I've some experience theming, and a little with compiling.
I was thinking MIUI with Rosie? That would be cool

I'm not familiar enough with compiling. Probably just ripping and tweaking for now. Don't want to bork someones phone and need to get a rom going that's stable and reliable first. Maybe after MIUI releases a source code we can cook something up from scratch. Rosie is nice but it would have to be heavily modded to get something outstanding and original.

Just wanted to give an update. Still testing miui by nix right now. I'm probably going to get going with a sense based rom. Work has been hectic. Working twelve hour might shifts seven days a week. It will be a light and fast rom. Still have some things to consider for a miui rom.

Looking for some guidance on how to max out battery life when not using the phone and performance when using it... read a few old post but were very vague on how to get profiles to kick in ect...
Thanks
Dumb question?

Don't use profiles, they make the Fascinate unhappy.
What makes the phone grumpy?
do you have any suggestions of what I should use to help extend my battery life

I don't know the answer to that, you'd have to ask one of the guys that knows more about this stuff than I do. You *can* run one of jt's or geeknik's undervolted kernels (in rom manager), and it helps with battery life.

My kernel's aren't in ROM Manager. Sorry. =)
How is that stupid fast kernal for the fascinate???... i was on another forum and they were saying that voodoo is popular but had a lot of glitches. maybe some other suggestions that would be a good option and that is compatible with super clean rom by jt1134 with revolutions theme.
Just finished rooting my Evo 4G for the first time and was wondering about the different ROM available. I haven't rooted since i had my Hero a year ago. I had fresh on my Hero and loved it. However I mainly use launcher pro and wanted to get away from a sense based ROM as I wanted to use full HDMI out and bluetooth HIDS and from last time I heard a bug in sense prevented this..is this still correct?? I was looking toward CM7.
So does anyone have any recommendation to start off with?
Thanks,
-Stephen
Sense does have the broken Bluetooth stacks, yes. So AOSP-wise? Whenever I actually use AOSP, I use MIUI with latest Tiamat kernel. People complain about no 4G and how it looks like an iPhone, but it is so customizable and it has some great devs.
Other than that, I would suggest SalvageMod or Deck's.
MIUI>SalvageMod>Deck's. All with the latest Tiamat.
But I am a Sense guy, so you know.... Full HDMI mirroring works on Sense with latest Freedom and Chopsuey kernel, if you are interested.
And if you need a refresher, check out my guide in my signature. It is written for Sense but it should apply universally.

thanks, ill look into those. Also what recovery do you recommend CM or RA?
Amon Ra by far
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
My recommendation would be Team Nocturnal Xplod 1.2 with Tiamat 3.37, it has bewn very smooth for me and AOSP

My recommendations :
CM7.1.0
ICS themes from market (both cm7 and adw.)
Set screen density to 200.

i recommend amon ra, and if you are interested in learning about aosp roms/kernels click on the link in my sig it's a guide that will explain it all to you with download links to all the roms and download zips to all the kernels. and if you need help installing your rom/kernel i put a link there to a guide for that
Thanks everyone,
I'm gonna start w/ CM7 stable. A few quick questions. What would be the best kernel to go with this. Something to increase battery, trickle charging.
Also do i need to flash a radio with this??
I went with Decks. From what I read it is a striped down version of CM7. What are the main differences? whats has been removed?

Decks is the way to go with aosp roms. I read people praising salvaged zen all the time, but I always have issues when charging my phone on that kernel. I go with.Tiamat. I like the idea of an aosp rom that is still being updated.

I Like sinister R9 - its sense based It is very fast has working everything as far as ive seen used this rom for over 3 weeks and as a result even my IT guy that swares by AOSP CM7 switched to it and he also likes it alot .. The one thing i can say i didnt like about Cm7 is the way it links contacts .. sense is amazing at linking contacts

yea the contact link is the 1st thing i noticed. Don't like it at all but i can deal with it. Main reason I'm going w/ AOSP is to use bluetooth HIDs, as sense doesn't allow this.

Can I just flash the Tiamat on top or will i have to reflash the ROM again and start over?
I just flashed the tiamat kernel. went w/o SBC as i have read that can be risky. Do I need to adjust any settings to help with battery life or does the kernel take care of that? Should Id be using setCPU?

do not use set cpu and if you want to learn about aosp you should click on the link in my sig and you should really look through the Q&A section b/c it will help you out A LOT!!!
I have tried a bunch of roms, asop and sense, I by far like the aosp roms much better. I am currently digging the latest Xplod rom by Team Nocturnal.
Team Blaze Roms with Sense 3.5 you cant go wrong with Blaze

Hey guys, I haven't flashed anything on my phone for months. In fact, I can't remember what ROM I am currently running, and what is safe/not safe to do at this point. This sounds really newbish, but I don't keep up on everything like some of you. What I do know is my Baseband is showing S:i500.04 V.ED05, and Kernel is 2.6.32.9
It's a TW based rom, but do not recall which. For some reason it seems things have been slowing and my phone is constantly freezing up and the battery life has gotten pretty crappy too. If anyone could help me out the best option from here I would really appreciate it!
TIA
edit: figured out I am on Powerwashed ED05 no kernel...

I don't think anyone can tell you what the best option for you is, just depends on what you prefer. Whether you like AOSP roms and can tolerate a little bugginess here and there, or if you want the phone to work like it does stock. There are good roms for either option.

FFS, there is no 'best ROM'! You will get thousands of different answers, and this has been asked and explained so many times before. Have you even bothered searching?
All I can say is WATCH THIS VIDEO
Well that wasn't very nice would've preferred 2 be rickrolled but anyway I'm new 2 the thread so I don't understand much

I see, but there are hundreds of threads like this, so please search before posting.
Anyways... I would recommend cm7 roms. As they are the most stable and fastest roms.
Try hyperdroid or nexushd2.

That depends on what you want and like. If you want the newest of the newest android, go for a Ice CreamSandwitch (ICS, android 4.x). I think it is not completely there yet for a normal user to use it on a daily basis. Personally i like the Cyanogenmod (CM) roms and don't like the normal gingerbread roms that much and roms that use Sense.. But it's all personal taste.
Basically you need to choose between the following sorts of roms:
- Cyanogenmod ICS, ICS, Cyanogenmod, gingerbread or Sense.
- Looks (Miui, sense) or performance
- The default kernel
I like the following roms: Dorimanx-ROM-HIGH-END, HyperDroid-CM7,
TyphooN CyanogenMod 7, NexusHD2-Gingerbread, NDT MIUI.
If you don't know what to choose from, go for a rom that has a lot of views/replys in it's thread and see if you like what you see.
cm2.3.7
or
miui 2.3.7
ics has some problems..
Miui seem to be most stable on mine with best battery life... had to move on tho screen cracked
