Just got a text from T-Mobile with "due to your high data usage we are slowing your speed for the rest of this billing cycle." I am a daily data user, on $30 "unlimited" data plan, and just a day ago downloaded and began using the Netflix app and have streamed 8 movies over hspda. Whoops. Should've used Wi-Fi. Sucks that T-Mobile is throttling their data now. May all here be duly warned. Had no idea T-Mobile was engaging in the same BS that other Co's were already committing.
Anyone else saddened by this crappy policy?

Have you done a speed test to see what it is now?
maybe they just slowed you down to hsdpa or something.

If that's being throttled.... I'm moving back to Sactown.
I'm still on the $25 Mytouch 3g plan so I don't think they can throttle me. Used more than 3gb already this month and that's before I installed Netflix. I'm testing it heavily on purpose to see if I get throttled. Will post back if I get a dreaded text about it.

Sorry to tell you but if you go over the 5GB soft cap you will get throttled unless you are grandfathered from a old truly unlimited plan, if you are lucky you and I suggest never changing anything on your plan or you will forever lose your granfathered statis.
At the OP sorry you did not know about the 5GB soft cap. But it is mentioned in the T&C's plus if you go to the T-Mobilr forums by going to t-mobile.com>Support tab>Forums you can find a butt load of threads on this topic, and I mean a butt load of them.

I expect to get throttled, but I'll never know 100% until it's tested. If they don't then yeah... I won't change anything with my plan. Was planning on staying off contract maybe anyway since my two years is almost up.

dude, you're getting 10megs down?
most people on WiMax don't get speeds like that, I wouldn't worry about it if I were you, you can stream just fine any movie you want on 10mb down, lol. If that's throttling I am not worried at all.
Well I just ran another 7mb data only (not Wi-Fi) test from my bedroom and got:
Btw, I am running at wireless N on my home network when I watch Netflix though, ever since the over-lords texted me. I guess as long as they don't sock me with some sort of over-usage fees then I can't complain. Damned happy with the speeds I get on this GBX v12 rom on my HD2. Sad that HTC originally had a 4g+++ capable phone with the HD2 but dumbed it down so bad and saddled it with winmo 6.5. This phone could have been called the "First 4g Smartphone"....sorry Evo4g users.

Sorry to disappoint you, but mobilespeedtest.com is known for its inaccuracies, and your speed tests prove it. The HD2 is limited to 7.2Mbps and that's a hardware limitation. Also, T-Mobile has been throttling for a while now, and it has been in the T&C for a long time, but they had not been enforcing it until a few months ago.

It probably is fast. You could be in a bad spot with towers or there are so many users that the bandwidth is killed. Run speed tests all over and at different times and you will see it change quite a bit. I can run them back to back to back sitting in the same spot and varying speeds.

True,
I ran a speed test and got about 1.5mb down, then ran one right after and it jumped to 4mb down. It depends on a lot apparently and I would not take one speed test to mean much.

I REALLY didn't want to get pulled into this discussion again, but I don't want to see forum members get screwed either. I've been going back and forth quoting the EVO-specific TOS with kris54241 on exactly this subject over here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755458
The 300mb roaming cap does come into play for the Evo, and Sprint has recently made it a priority to begin cracking down on those users (weather those 300mb roaming were a majority of usage or not). Some people have begun to see warnings in their bills.

I don't believe they charge for over 300MB, but they do warn you. In the TOS & contract you signed in the beginning it says if a certain percent (can't remember) of your minutes are roaming or if more than 300MB data is roaming they have the right to terminate your service.
The actual terms of service for phones states that a "majority of your minutes or data usage may not occur off the Sprint network."
That means that technically, you could talk for 61 minutes - 30 on Sprint, 31 Roaming - and Sprint can term the service.
Also, you can download 3kb of data (yes, 3kb), 1kb on Sprint, 2kb Roaming - and Sprint can terminate your service.
Now, chances are you wouldn't even get looked at until you hit a GB or more of anything or a ton of minutes, but the way it's written, it's a simple majority... Pretty cool huh?

I think calling it HSPA+ does it more justice than "4G". And it's "4G-like speeds" since I believe serious 4G is 100 Mbps on the down speed.

yes, that 168 is FUTURE plans..... (who knows when that will be)
ACTIVE thoretical speeds are 21 Mbps
ACTIVE actual speeds are 6MBps - 12MBps (peak)
they have to go through stages... like 42 MBps upgrade..... and so on... they are not gonna jump to 168 over night..... there arent even any devices out that support those speeds. HECK we dont even have devices right now that support 21 MBps.... G2 is capable of 14.4 max MBPS....
I am not flaming you or anything, just saying that you can't always count on future speculations.

Really? The article I'm referring to was posted on the Information Week site today, November 3, 2010 08:50 AM, just a couple hours before I posted here.
Does everyone understand that what they're apparently saying now isn't "the G2 is a phone with 4G speeds," but that HSPA+ is literally 4G?
In a press release issued yesterday, T-Mobile specifically refers to the G2 as one of their "4G products." I hadn't seem them do that before.

60kilobits/sec, which quite frankly is next to useless.
This is becoming an interesting little tempest in a teapot today. The Wall Street Journal weighed in about an hour ago. I can't post links, but google "4G Image Scrambled As T-Mobile USA Enters The Mix" and you'll find it.
According to the article, T-Mobile began their campaign yesterday (so I'm still not sure how it's "old news," although I know folks here are pretty plugged in).
On T-Mobile's main site, I'm not seeing references to HSPA+ anymore. They're just "America's largest 4G network" and the G2 is a 4G product.
Lotta controversy coming from the competitors, though.

Those articles are all responding to the press release and campaign begun by TMO yesterday, which has started a controversy. In short, they say your understanding is wrong now.
Yes, we all know that prior to yesterday TMO was saying the G2 had "4G-like speeds."
But starting yesterday, they said, basically, "heck with it, our HSPA+ network IS 4G. Consumers aren't interested in all that 'alphabet soup.'" (their words).
So, if you walk into the store where I bought an HSPA+ G2 two weeks ago, they are now selling 4G G2s. Same phone, though.
Im the original post, I was simply pointing out that their announcement yesterday kicked up a backlash all over the net today. Even the Huffington Post had an article, calling TMO's network a "4GERY." (Clever.)

To be fair, T-Mobile isnt charging for tethering (from what I know) and it still has unlimited access whereas other companies charge you more for going over or simply has a hard cap
Just to add to this post.
Tmobile changed their "unlimited" to a soft cap at 5GB last fall.
But people like me on the old grandfathered 19.99 BIS plan (yes my BIS works perfectly with my Samsung Vibrant). Aren't grandfathered plans like mine; isn't the soft cap on old users like me at 10GB? instead of 5GB.
I never even reach 1GB on a a good month even with tethering on the Vibrant. But I don't tether that much.

Is not actually unlimited, because when they throttle you pages hardly ever load, the phone is good just for making call and sending text, other than that is completely worthless.
They actually throttle you so hard to 56KB because it is actually the best workaround to actually stop you from using your data, without actually and completely stopping your connection, and they can still claim that it still is unlimited.
Now they are advertising here the Vibrant 4G,with bells and whistles as a 4G phone capable of blazing fast 21MB connection on their 4G HSPA+ network all in very big letters.
And when you read the incredibly small and almost unreadable letters it say HSPA+ 4G no available in Puerto Rico..
And some how their adds are not misleading.

I totally agree. I first used to get a text saying I hit the 10gb limit then it changed to 5gb. I'm on the g1 plan. Tethering is also not the only culprit. I download mixtapes (for promotional use only) to the phone. I stream. Some of the newer games have some big files to download. Why use wifi I paid for unlimited no quotes web.

Actually tmobile does state it in the fine print if you look at it.

LoL. I went into the myaccount app and tried to set an alert for data. It said due to the fact I have an unlimited data plan I can't use this feature. So the app thinks just like me.

They did that to me once. Throttled me less than 24 hours until my cycle renewed. Like less than a day matters, apparently it does to them though. Tmo FTW!
Edited, when throttled, it was my experience that turning on edge only data was much faster than the throttled 3g. It seems they don't throttle the edge side, just the 3g data.

I know they say they don't throttle, but myself and a number of friends have noticed a big drop in data speed the more we use. So what does everyone else think?

HAHA welcome to the "Now Network". Sprint=dial-up speeds. Myself, or my 3 friends on Sprint, haven't gotten above 100kbps since last October. It happens everywhere I travel too. Well, except between 2am and 4am, then it works perfectly fine, when everyone else is asleep.
It seems to me like they do during the day. My 3g is not near as fast as it used to be during the day. It wasnt a gradual decrease. More like a sudden. While my connection at my house still pulls 1.0-1.3mbps at my house during the day, I used to get 2+mbps there during the day. Now I don't get that speed til 1-5am. You're probably thinking "wtf are you *****ing about?!" Cuz it is very fast at my house. ****ty part is that everywhere else its nowhere near 1.0mbps. More like 0.2-0.4. And I'm NEVER home. That's the problem. Oh well. Its either live with it or go pay $40-50 more to get raped by verizon.

Mine used to be around 3Mb/s on 3g, that was when I first got my contract. It seems the more I tethered and used more and more data the slower it got. yestursay I got .25 mb/s! Flashed radios this morning and i'm up to 1.

No, they don't throttle during the day, they dont throttle at all. The reason your speeds are crappy during the day is because there are too many people using it during the day, and each tower's crappy T1 line backhaul can't handle more than a few MB/s total for everyone connected to it.
Darn you other sprint users i'm my area, turn your 3g off!

One thing that we all have to remember is that sprint subcontracts its network to other providers (virgin, republic, boost...) And all their customers uses our network as well.
Think about it, Verizon really doesn't lend their network, that's why you pay higher prices, because you have their full resource.
We pay lower prices but we have to share...
Just a thought...

Unfortunately I did not take screen shotts to back this up, so fwiw.....
I have been throttled while on 4g. It was not a signal issue, peak use/time thing, straight up throttled. Long story short- My desktop got fried several days back. Replaced it, had to start from scratch software wise.

That screen shot is for Nov.3 - 11th. Right towards the end of a 5.2gig d/l (cs5.5 master collection) My 4g speeds here @ home avg 17-2300kbs on a bad day. While going through pdanet I realize 3-500kbs @ the desktop. @ about 5030 MB my d/l speeds sank to 39 kbs have been stuck there since. Called sprint they said my data usage is "suspect" and will be monitored untill my next billing cycle.
So keep it under 9 gigs a day kids.. they WILL throttle you.

The short answer is, "It depends."
I am well versed in the 4G arena, not so much 3g/EVDO.
When you discuss Sprint's 4G network, you are really discussing the re-branding and re-selling of Clearwire's Wimax network. Any discussion of Clearwire's Wimax must include an understanding of N.I.M.S., which stands for, Network Integrity Management System. That's code for THROTTLING!!
In a nutshell, Clear directly, and through its wholesale distributors, continues to sell more bandwidth than it has available to deliver. During periods of low demand, all is well. During times of high demand, N.I.M.S. automatically kicks in. A quick Google search of Clearwire N.I.M.S. should provide the triggers and effects.

To parse Sprint's claim that they do not throttle is easy. They don't; Clear does it for them.

You don't realize how much data you use when you have such a fast connection..
I barely used the damn thing
So, when I get to 5GB, will it stop saying 4G on the top and show 1x ?
Will I at least be able to send text messatges?
Armageddon my friend....be prepared.
In all seriousness chill out, the only thing that will happen is your speeds will be reduced dramatically, slower than edge speeds. It will still display "4g" though keep in mind we don't even have true 4g so get that out of your head. Messages and data don't have anything to do with each other unless were dealing with mms, then at which point you will still receive but the transfer speed will be super slow. My recommendation for when you get capped....force your phone on edge

You can call our data speeds "HOBO G"
I don't care if someone says its not true 4G, who ever said what was true or not anyway?
I couldn't ask for anything really better than this
sure LTE can do much more, but I get those speeds almost EVERYWHERE!!
True 4G or not, It's as fast, so why even bother saying its not "true" 4g, lol

the ITU, who decides these standards. basically after they put together the 4g standard tmob and att *****ed (and probably paid a good amount of money) to have 'advanced 3g' included as '4g'.
to the op, you may not get throttled the first time or the second, you'll get sms messages saying you are throttled. when you are actually throttled, you can expect 64kbps max. it's absolutely useless.
How do you use so much data?
I kinda disgree with LTE being able to much more atleast, at the rev Verizon has theirs. I have a mifi from them and the only difference I see is upload is better 6megs usually. Then again their network goes down at least twice a month or when they have a new LTE phone to market. Download is usually about the same if not better or I should more sustained if your tethering then on my mifi. Its both a race and frankly I was kinda disappointed to hear the CEO of T-Mobile say the were going to use some the 4bill to deploy LTE. HSPA has a long way to go before it needs replacing.

you must have never used ATT LTE... that **** wipes the floor with us. However, I always say.. why do you want to download so fast with an expensive data plan as theirs lol.
So Treo how fast is fast on ATT? and how long is that going to last since there are very few people with LTE enabled devices on ATT. I can pretty much say that when the new iPhone comes out with LTE on ATT their network will be flooded. VZW network was bleeding fast when it first came out too. Which begs the question how fast is to fast. Cell phones have already past 6 bonded t1s. "9" megs 10 megs is the starter package for those putting thier svrs in a data center. Is 20 megs down not enough?
In atl ATT thier dsl isn't even that fast. 6 megs is all you get. You have to step up to u-puke to get 24 megs down. That's wireline service with tv so at this point even at HSPA we are ahead which is amazing but the user isn't going to see the download speed as much surfing or checking email even netflix works fine at 4 megs. What the user "us" notice is lag when doing all the above minus netflix. The only thing other than this is if your downloading a large file etc and at that point one has to ask if that file would have been better downloaded to a laptop or desktop or if its a PowerPoint sales file or employee reviews doc etc then there's security questions involved as well that are much more easily handled on a laptop.
So at the end of all this how fast to u is fast enough. What speed do u need to be able to get all of your mobile life in a month done?
Also its usually the 3rd month your cap kicks in unless your just massively abusive. Say like hitting your cap 5 days into your billing cycle two months running. The 2gig plan their less forgiving. Just try to use WiFi as much as u can.

Well it really depends on the area, but at very strong places it ranges up to about 60+ down and 25+ up...
but their averages is about half of that 30+ and 12-15 up
Our phone peaked i think around 24? I don't remember seeing anyone getting much higher. Not sure about upload speed but it was single digit thats for sure.
our average would be in the teens for download 10-15. Yes we can get higher but their average is about doubled ours..
not sure why you're asking me how fast is too fast? and how fast is fast enough? I don't think I made any points or argument about that... lol I only said that with such a high speed data, but only with like 4gb average data plan... yeah...
But honestly the t989 data speed is more than enough.

yeah I was like WTF do you need all that speed for? they have a strong cap on their data plan right? lol
but yeah I'm not too worried about our data speed. I'm more than satisfied with it.
I'm pretty sure most of the measurements is done through speedtest and probably a few through sustained speeds. but I doubt these guys are gonna download a big enough file, see the transfer rate in KBps then change it to kbps (bytes to bits) lol
LOL look.. anything and I mean ANYTHING!! over 5mb/s download is gravy
That being said, i average around 12-15 with peaking at 20
in 3 years, I will bet no LTE will be as available as our HSPA 42+
I drove 400 miles 2 weeks ago and lost service maybe twice for about 10 minutes.
LTE? Wimax? LOL right, you're lucky to have it when you need it.
As for speeds, sure, it's faster but it's a waste, unless you're using it to download torrents, 5 mg down is more than enough to do ANYTHING
And I mean anything, including tethering to a roku device and streaming HD netflix!
As for this being "Fake" it's not, its was approved 4G and that's why t-mobile can call it that, 4G
As for how I use that much data, well its not hard, I bike every day and use a program called sports tracker live, which tracks my rides, I also sometimes stream slingplayer to listen to the news while riding.
I stream music every so often, I tether to my Xoom or Ipad if I'm out and about.
It's so darn easy to use the data when you have the speeds.
I'm at 98% now and have yet to get a text or email, should I try the throttle trick?
Yes, your speed will be reduced a lot, but no extra cost I think
I wonder
I'm wondering if anyone else has what I have.
When I took a look at the OP screen shot I noticed there was as asterisk that showed the 5gb high speed limit. So I logged into my Tmo account to check mine because I am running a custom ROM and dont have the Tmo app installed.
My sis line(1yr old) says "Data: 1.4 GB / Unlimited (up to 5 GB high-speed data)"
Mine line(12yrs old) says "Data: 3.9 GB / Unlimited", there is no asterisk that states I have a 5gb high speed limit or any mention of a limit at all.
I have been with Tmo for 12yrs(since VoiceStream) and never changed my number. I have had this data plan for I dont remember how many years, but I know it was before they started talking this "high speed cap" thing. Does anyone think I may not have a "high speed cap". Can someone else log into their Tmo account online, and see what yours says?
You might have been "grandfathered" into their unlimited plan. I know Verizon was doing the same thing right before I switched to their plan.
Verizon was unlimited before, they announced they were capping their plans and if you had a plan before that date you were grandfathered in. I'm thinking that is what happened to you.
