wow! you know whats crazy? the huge amount of development and hacking on phones. theres this huge push in that direction. but considering this huge amount of developement, theres no effort in developing apps or ios for the hd2 or other phones. i really dont nunderstand that. its the biggest mystery and biggest hypocricy if you ask me.

how is it? ios is a totally closed system and uses differnet hardware, the only reason the hd2 was hackable for the openbootloader of windows mobile an the fact it was the first device of its kind and then other devices to very simliar spec became available and were ported across
why is it a hypocrisy? please explain this one to me

It isnt possible due to it being a completely different os, and as for developing ios for the hd2 or any other phone isnt possible because the drivers and ios is closed source so itll never happen.

i already exlpaine why its hypocricy. becuz of the huge development concentrated in hacking and modifying software that it should dawn on the developers and hackers that ios, the most used mobile platform in the world, should be a target.

There isn't a drive to develop an ios port because its nit possible

yeah that makes more sense. its just that iois is such a smoother and fast platform that it wuold be a blessing seeing it on the hd2 and other phones.

Not really android is as smooth and fast or even better then ios. IOS may have more apps and better apps as it is more mature, however many apps that ios has are on android now

no you didnt explain at all, you seem to be moaning that ios isnt available on other devices, people hack the ios, its called jailbreaking but thats different to actually having the ability to port the code to another device ala anfroid, whcih is open source so the code is freely available for developers
ios will never be available on any device other than an apple, if you think this is hypocrisy then speak to apple about it and lobby that they open up their source code

yes i did. you seem to be jealous that ios is a better ios than other devices. but its a shame that ios isnt ported to other devcies. it'd make many such phones really cool, like the hd2.
its sad that ios wont ever be ported to other devices. and if deveolpers had the power to mod ios for other phones, and if they didnt, theyd be hypocrites. if you dont think this isnt hypocricy convince them about it and challenge it if apple opens their source code one day.

you could be right about wm7

"Smooth" is really a matter of perception. I have an iPod Touch 4G and I use various Android builds on the HD2. I prefer Android to iOS because I can use it just the way I like it; my homescreen, my widgets, my rules. iOS looks spectacular and apps look great on it, but I don't see how it is in any way superior to dual core droids like the HTC Sensation and SGS2. The same, of course, applies to the apps.

I think he's referring more to the iOS experience in general rather than specific functional deficiencies - I don't think that will ever be accomplished, unless Apple suddenly wakes up to the realisation that open source is the way to go. Fat chance.

Why Android???

Honestly!...
Why should I flash "googles" Android into my Bad Ass HD2???
No Joke! I need to know what all the fuss is about...
Why you ask? Well for a number of reasons. A search will tell you all of that as im sure this question has been asked over and over lol.
If you need to ask...
Seriously, why don't you just try it? You're not flashing anything. You won't lose any of your current information. I was enjoying the hacked versions of WinMo on my HD2, but now with Android I don't feel I need to ever go back.

Let's be nice. Android is pretty limitless many things can be added. Winmo is sorta outdated. Right now winmo has a lot of community support but that's just not enough. Try it . Dont expect anything and see what you get.
Biggest problem I see is winmo users go into android expecting the same experience.

Funny one
topic: some things are better with android, some arent. I think the interesting fact is to chose the operating system YOU want to use.
You can compare it with the operating system situation on your PC. Some people want to use Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, MacOSX,.....
I think it's a perfectly legitimate question: Not everyone has the love of digital adventures, tweaking or driving someone with more knowledge up the wall we do.
Why not just say what you like about Android? Unless you're not sure....well?
I enjoy reconfiguring my phone. I must have flashed custom WinMo ROM's a hundred times and radios tens of times. Configuring script to put my applications back the way they were, testing the build for smooth operation, stability and features had been a thrill of mine...my hobby, I guess you'd say, since the HD stemming from late 2008.
Android just kind of picks up where Winmo left off. I'm using Elegancia ROM and have been for months. It works great with the Android offerings.
Is Android better? If that's your question, then in my opinion, WinMo is better than Android on the HD2 as of this writing, by Android on this device is catching up incredibly fast.
Maybe you'll like it, maybe not. If your interested enough to chance getting flamed, then you are most likely a candidate to give it a go.
3 simple reasons
1. faster internet browsing
-android have simply a faster browsing experience for me, faster than opera on wm anyday
2. market
-the abundance of customization and application in the android market vs the wm store is like comparing a walmart to a gas convience store for choice of app and avaibility of apps
3. utility
-android simply utilize our screen and hardware much more efficently than windows. try the foursquare app on windows, and then try the foursquare app on android, it's like comparing a dirt road to a 5 lane highway in terms of usability and speed

To the OP: Exactly what everyone else said (apart from infiniteecho)
Try it and see. Nothing to lose except maybe half an hour of your time.
As said above its 'hoarses for coarses'. I wasnt expecting much from Android because Minmo did everything I needed +more, plus it looked ok visually IMHO using CHT etc.
But android just feels slicker somehow...plus I'm not yet missing any of the features that I thought I really loved in winmo. Just the fact of having a good Market is a BIG plus for some people (myself now included although I always thought I'd never care for thousands of mainly pointless apps )....Android is generally a LOT more finger friendly than any 6.5.x build..... the list goes on.
Personally I am becoming a convert FAST. I will almost deffinately switch soley to Android when a proper android rom is released.
Dual booting is great and its always nice to have the option of two O/S's, but I find myself wanting to see Winmo less and less everytime I wake my new Android phone from its beuty sleep I just dont love Winmo like I used too lol.
But the only way you will ever really know is if you try it for yourself go on you (probably) wont be dissapointed.
WinMo stock = sack of **** on the HD2, you have to hack and slash away until you eventually get something that works. Then, and only then can you continue to play around with it.
Android, out of the box it works, and your free to play around with it and make it your own. If it wasn't for Android my HD2 would have be sold.
The touch screen and general Windows Mobile performance just pissed me off, you could triple the power of the HD2 and you still wouldn't get a smooth, slick experience.

i like android because of the limitless apps, you'll never need for anything again for a phone. the market was the main reason for me because most apps are free, now google maps include free navigation! windows mobile who? lol plus even with android being ported to our hd2 it out performs windows mobile, less freezes and errors. programmed to work better! internet browsing, smoother and faster. once u learn all the features and how to use widgets u will like wmo less and less. i never seen myself becoming a fan of android when i was solely against it when i had touch pro 2
Me??? Because WinMo is Sh*t. If I couldn't have loaded Android on this HD2... it would have been on Craigslist an hour after I got it.
Unless of course bloated, clunky, slow, crashing, lack luster garbage is someone's thing... l would advice them to stay away from Android.

[Q] Now WebOS on HD2?

It seems there's been little interest in previous mentions of WebOS on the HD2, and it's not gone anywhere. I saw that there is development of WebOS for the Hero:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822401
I wondered if it would be possible to use this development to port to the HD2 as we already have the android builds running well? Correct me if I'm wrong- i know nothing about developing, I just loved the Pre until I got close to the hardware!
Someone posted earlier today in IRC the root.img and the source code for that. I'm sure Mdeejay could do something with it.

I've got to admit I've not used it extensively, but I walked into O2 stores and tried the demo phones and it was the most fluid experience I've had. I'd love to try WP7, and of course I've loaded froyo ( and ubuntu) but I've found android frustrating as information just isn't accessible without jumping in and out of an app, and I'm worried WP7 will be similar. No multitasking is a big downer for me- I do loads of work and research on my phone. With CHT2 Sense seems great, if only it was abit more stable! I'm hopeful on that one though! but yeah, WebOS seems so smooth I forgot I was moving between applications.

Go play with one for 10 minutes. You'll quickly see why webOS is a juggernaut among mobile operating systems.
Everything else just feels like **** (pretty much) once you use and have experienced webOS's fluidity and easy of use.

I agree. My nephew has a Palm Pixi and WebOS is truly sweet. Ever since he got his Pixi I have been yearning for WebOS on my HD2. If the Acer Liquid Stream launcher worked better, it would suffice me. But it has some bad issues.
Can we like start a poll for development of webOS on the HD2?
webOS (sorry Google, sorry Apple) is surely the best mobile OS out there. (I Know, I've had them all).
Well one plus side to it, is it supports homebrewing.
What does it take to code a port like that? A bunch of assembly language programming and hardware interfacing? Honestly I have wanted WebOS on any device for a long time. Since it's based on linux, shouldn't there be a way to somehow set it on top of an Ubuntu build/Android build?
And on top of that, wouldn't HP's legal team be raping anyone who even thought about attempting to port WebOS on anything?
http://www.webosroundup.com/2010/12/hacked-webos-appears-on-htc-hero/
According to this source, the entire development on the hero was a hoax. Can anyone confirm?
Any screenshots??
I would be surprised if HP made any attempts to stamp out a port of WebOS. HP has been supportive of the WebOS homebrew scene, and they need to increase their user base by any means necessary. Just like Microsoft with WP7 it's in their best interest to turn a blind eye to this sort of thing at least until their "ecosystem" has a better foothold.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can we have webOS on our HD2's
Its more powerful has a bigger screen and well its an HD2...
the Palms are way to small for such an amazing UI.
Where do I donate to help this along ??????
Forreal..i would also donate myself...
I would love to see webOS on our HD2's. Haven't had the opportunity to use it yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. Also heard it's very easy to port iPhone games to and it plays them just as good as the iphone... with HP behind it now, we'll probably be seeing lots of games and apps for that os.

HD2 Runs WP7 faster than HD7

Sorry, I am new to this forum so I am not allowed to post link. Apparently, there is a video on youtube comparing HD2 running WP7 with HD7. The name is :"HTC HD2 WP7 faster then HTC HD7."

1) HD2 cannot run iOS, it would take a significant effort to port and Apple would slap anyone who tried with a C&D so fast their head would spin. Android is open source so the you can view the source code and port things lawyer free.
2) The CPU in the A4 is manufactured by Samsung and is the same CPU in the Galaxy S (hummingbird) which is actually "even more better" than the QSD chip in our HD2s.
nice!
Regarding iOS - would be nice only to annoy I-phone users ;-)

That being said, having used both:
Android - more tweaks, more apps but also more babysitting to keep it running well; there are 4G phones. Prepare to use task manager, worry about malware and so on.
Windows Phone 7 - less tweaks, less apps, but it "just works". Also, the UI rocks it, designed to be more than just a launchpad for shortcuts. No 4G phones yet. T-Mobile is coming with first phone with front facing camera.

I have been searching for a thread like this to clarify some doubts I have about both platforms....noob here guys so be gentle.
I believe there are some widgets in Android which could provide you a similar feature...i.e. a single glance overview of calls/ appointments/ msgs etc....I also believe this is part of the OS and not a separate app...doesn't this make both equal, featurewise.
I feel that WP7 has the best UI compared to iOS and android.... but the lack of file management and missing USB outlook sync (which is the only reason I'm still sticking to WM) is my biggest worry. I understand there is work around; but I think this is a major drawback.
People who have used both Android and WP7, can you pls share how the lack of these features in WP7 affects day to day usage (mainly business use). Do you feel its worth adapting to the new routine for a smoother user experience (and a promise of further improvements) or the sensible thing is to just sacrifice the cool UI for all the other benefits of having a flexible platform (not to mention some terrific hardware)
Thanks for your input folks....
Android gives you customization and flexibility, but lacks the easy of use that the windows phone ui gives you.
Both are very much usable day by day, but as you've pointed out, the new windows ui is not flexible, and you'r out of luck trying to sync it to outlook, maybe with CompanionLink.
I prefer android
Thanks for the reply.
Anyone with good knowledge on MS know if this situation (USB outlook sync) about to change in further revisions of WP (Tango / Apollo)

That is a feature that will not be added back into the Windows Phone lines. Knowing some of the people on the WP7 team, it's been complained about, but will never seen as a feature in that mobile OS family.
It's an archaic technology, and with the advent of high speed mobile data and wifi hotspots so available for when cell service isn't, it's not seen as a priority to even be considered.

When I read this, I desperately hoped they were from some third world country that I'd never heard of because I didn't understand one word of it.

Porting

For the 8X, will it be possible to port android, similar to how it has been done for the HD2?

Or for the One X, will it be possible to port win 8???
I'm pretty sure they (devs) will get android working on the 8x...
We have never seen Android run on any Windows Phone since the release of Windows Phone 7. Especially with the use of Secure Boot in WP8 this gets a lot harder. So it might be possible but I guess it won't happen anytime soon.
I dont think its possible...other WP7 devices have hardly got an unlock..only lumia 710 has
and WP8 has a secure boot so hacking it seems to be impossible....iv been waiting since the 710 unlock for an unlock for lumia 800, nothing till now...:/
so dont keep hopes with WP.
if you want a port, if you want open source, if you want customization buy an android phone, though i dont like android much..doesnt have the smooth WP feel!
Just get an Android device, problem solved

LOL , just one week and the stupid android q's are already popping up.
personally I hope android will NEVER be ported to any MS product again
why ?????
if you want android just buy yourself a android phone , if you got a wp/other phone for free then sell it and by yourself the phone you like.
Mod please close thread.

Which is why they make android and WP devices. And why WP has secure boot. Because its Windows. Its closed source. Which is why I'm also keeping my Inspire.
