Possible cause and solution to X10 Battery? -"No Sleep Bug"

Hey guys,
Just updated to the x10 after my samsung galaxy died on me, so far i am rather happy - except for the lack of root, but that will come.
I have noticed many complaints on the forum about battery life, and have experienced the same thing myself. From my experience, i think this looks like the same issue that was faced on a leak of 1.6 for the galaxy - it was referred to as the "No Sleep Bug".
TBH, the name says it all - for some reason, in many builds of android 1.6, phones were not sleeping correctly. There are many theories as to why, from cpu not being allowed to sleep, to permanent communication with google servers.
Despite all these different theories, one thing seemed to fix the problem - turning off all location services. Some people argue that a different carrier build, turning off just 'share with google' under location, turning off just AGPS etc. would fix it, but from my experience, the only real way to fix the issue was to turn off all GPS usage unless you need it. The once you have used it, reboot your phone.
This fix obviously sucks, and a new fix has recently been released by a veritable android-demigod around the Galaxy.

Now, from my experience, no sleep behave exactly the same way on the x10 as it does on the Galaxy;
1) I turn of all location services, and my battery life at least doubles.
2) After said turning off of services, 'spare parts' no longer says 100% running time under battery usage - in fact it can be as low as 10%.
These two factors are identical to my experience with Galaxy. SO; is there any way drakaz's fix can be applied to our X10's? It seems to me that the files he mods are standard Android system files, not sony/samsung specific.
Now i am no developer, so i dont know it this is possible - the first question that comes to mind for me is "do we need root access, or can this be done through developer tools using the android SDK?"
Can anyone help shed anymore light on this?

Seems to work for me. I disabled all location services. Spare Parts went down from 100% to 7.6%.
I'll just have to enable GPS when I need to use it..

No sleep is easy to fix, took me a while to figure it...
Turn your screen brightness from manual to auto, spare parts will now start showing proper running stats, no more 100% running.
The screen is a little dark in auto but it will cure the 100% running.
GPS and location services etc make no difference to my X10i, I am running the 1.6 version unbranded UK handset, the only thing to stop mine running 100% is to put the screen on Auto.

LOL... this is already going the way of the Galaxy thread!
My phone came out of the box with auto-brightness and i never changed that option, yet i still had no sleep.
Drakaz has done some fairly deep digging and is next to certain that it is an artefact of the geolocation bug discussed in the thread in which the problem was fixed.

Me neither.. I was wondering about that myself!..
Although I'd half assumed that they were referring to the total "up-time" figure which you can see at the bottom of the "about phone"; "Status" screen.. But perhaps not.?

Spare Parts is a standalone Program ...
(i don't know for sure if it is in the market or downloadable as .apk from somewhere here in the forum ...)

Spare parts is indeed available from the market - it is a much more powerful tool for indicating battery usage than the regular android methods. The galaxy stared on 1.5 which had NO indicator of battery usage statistics at all, so we all learned about spare parts very fast.
Perhaps that is why no x10 users have realised about the potential no sleep bug; because so far only the android usage indicators have been used?...
Anyway, hopefully this can help us all understand the way our phones are working better together

14% it's mine value for running time, not 100%. By the way thats 30 minutes of 210 in total :S

I'm also experiencing "No sleep bug" after i used GPS. I use Battery Graph to plot my power consumption and after I use GPS, I can clearly see that power consumption is high even if i turn the phone in plane mode.
In addition SE widget, used to turn on/off GPS, seems to not work very well for me. So, to fix the bug, i manually disable GPS in parameter menu and restart my phone. After that power consumption is hardly null (20% in 8h with MP3 on almost all the time).

Do you have 3G always on?

My phone has no trouble sleeping.
Gps hasn't really been an issue but I keep it off when not needed.
Here's my solid settings:
1) No auto sync
2) No moxier
3) Gps off
4) Restart after using wireless
As long as it's like this my phone lasts 2 days easily

Yes, but I made a lot of test with and without 3G enabled and 3G seems not to be a problem for me. I think my problem comes from GPS.

I have been playing with mine for a month to work out what caused mine to not go into sleep, I keep GPS wifi etc on 24/7 but in spare parts I was running 100%, after numerous reinstalls and removing everything i chanced on turning on auto screen brightness, now when i unplug my x10 the running sits at the correct level.
No Geolocation bug here

I have this problem with 100% on and off. Sometimes when I check its under control (~10%), other times its at 100%. I have GPS off, no WiFi, auto brightness... don't know why it sometimes just gets stuck at 100% :/

that doesn't always work, if you don't isolate the cause then the app will re-open itself at times.

as i mentioned in some other threads, the 60ma bug is caused by the process "CSPeopleSyncService". you can kill this process as you wrote, or just disable syncing facebook and google contacts in options. at least i sync them once a day automatically (don't want to loose the sync feature), and the 60ma bug never came back...

Might be a nOOb question but how do you kill that CSPeopleSyncService process?
I've been suffering from this 6mA for a couple of minutes and going to 60mA thing. Rebooting 'might' work but I don't want to monitor the consumption every hour.

If you don't feel like disabling sync, Quick Reboot (free in market) is a good alternative. Some builds have hot rebooting built-in, even easier.
Back in the game in less than 30 seconds, as opposed to the rather lengthy full reboot.

LoL just downloaded it. It really says what it does. Click it and the device reboots without a single warning.

the best way is a taskkiller. i'm using systempanel light (included in mdj hd builds), where you can add programs and processes to ignore list. but as i said, changing sync to once a day fixed my problem with 60ma in standby completely! i don't know why

I think he meant fast reboot. It just kills everything so it's as if you've just rebooted (sort of).

No, I mean Quick Reboot. I'm still not convinced this battery drain is caused by certain processes, so Fast Reboot isn't an option imo.

Fair enough. So you just mean reboot then. Ah well.

No, it's hot rebooting: basically only rebooting Android (it's a little more complex than that).
I used to do regular reboots but they take way longer.

im suffering from this in Desire HD build
wanna kill this permanently without quick reboot (since my ROM is not Deodex) completely.
disabling sync? its all "disabled"

You all might try a different SD card, had the 30ma bug, was 60. Changed micro SD card, re loaded android, now 3-7ma

Just saying, I reboot using dev tools: bad behavior-> crash system server. Probably not the cleanest way to do it but it works.

Where did 'find' this information?
Without background sync enabled and facebook not even installed it can draw up to 60mA.
I'm not sure it's that single process causing the drain to be honest.
(Please don't take this the wrong way )

For me I think it is after I turn on WiFi and then back off again. It never goes back to 7ish mA. It stays at around 65mA as if WiFi was still on.
I'm using darkstone SuperRAM FroYo v1.5.

I just found something interesting while using autokiller.
In the processes (i had the high drain again) there was twice the 'android system' mentioned.
I killed one of those entries, and the drain went back to 6mA.
Of course, can't be sure enough so i rebooted the phone, played with it a little and after 10 minutes of standby, i checked again. 54mA.
Again, Autokiller > processes and twice the android system. Killed 1 of them and back to 7mA.
I can't say why this happens, because in older builds (MDJ 2.4 Froyo clean w/ it's own kernel i don't have that issue).
I am no DEV or programmer, but maybe it's something others could test as well? I've been playing with this and trying to find out why this happens ever since the hastarin 8.6 kernel was released and I noticed it only happens with later kernels and mostly on RAM builds.
Just my 2 cents (or local currency my 2 bani )

For whatever its worth: On MDJ Froyo HD 4.6 (and earlier builds) I can get 3-6mA in standby but anytime I change the Kernel or framework-res.apk and reboot, standby consumption goes up to around 55 mA all the time. Doesn't matter how many times I reboot.
I've been correcting this by rebooting to WM and recopying all the files in the android folder (CLRCAD.exe, Haret.exe, initrd.gz, rootfs.img, startup.txt, system.etx2, ts-calibration) except zImage (because I'm using a different Kernel than came with the build) and data.img. When I boot back to Android, back to 3-7 mA. I don't know why this works, but it consistantly does. At least for me.

another tip by darkstone:
turn off the "use Wireless" in the Locations Settings help to solve the problem if you are having high drain when you got data/wifi

Combatting the Sleep Of Death

Not sure how to search on the XDA app, so please forgive me if this is already a topic... does anyone have any tips/tricks for avoiding the Sleep Of Death?

What version CM7 are you on?
Latest SOD fixes were put into a kernel which is available as separate zip but have not made it into a nightly build as the build has not been working since mid November.
You may be able to use the kernel update if you are on a fairly recent version or you could switch to the KANG MiRaGe ROM which does include the kernel fix together with other improvements which have not made it into a nightly. Look for the main MiRaGe thread in the development forum.
Other than that before applying this kernel fix people were using various techniques for switching wifi off rapidly when suspending which seemed to be a work-around.
I haven't had a SOD since using the new kernel when it first appeared and as now as embodied in MiRaGe.

I'm on cm7.1.0, I don't get SOD all the time just on occasion without pattern

Widgets...
Don't use Beautiful Widgets. That causes SoD's. Other widgets may cause the same problem.

I have found that every widget that has weather causes SOD for me. All others are okay.

I had to switch ROM's from MIUI to Phiremod to get this to stop. Works fine now even with Beautiful Weather Widget active.

The KANG ROM you describe is the one I have been on since it was introduced. I had the SOD fix but it still occured albeit infrequently. My "fix" is to just shut my Nook down every night. I haven't had one since.

Setting wifi to shut off when screen goes off also works for me (the issue seems to be wifi related). You can also use tasker to shut wifi off when the screen turns off.
Both beautiful widgets and the go weather widgets have caused the sleep of death for me. Without any widgets, my Nook would be up for weeks at a time.

I'm assuming you have a basic understanding of how to use Tasker, if this is not so please let me know and I'll be more in-depth. I created a profile named WIFISLEEP with the condition being "Display Off". The first step of the internal task is to wait 5 minutes, with the "IF" box checked and the "IF" condition reading "%SCREEN ~ off". The second step is to set Wifi to off, with the same "IF" condition as the first step. The third step is to play a notification sound (not required, but nice to be assured that your profile actually executes), with the same "IF" condition as the first two steps. I already had a "Display On" profile (for setting the CPU governor and speed), so I just added the next part to the pre-existing profile. If you don't already have such profiles you can just create another profile (named something like "Display On"). The condition, of course, being "Display On", and the first task being "WiFi set On" with the "IF" condition being "%SCREEN ~ on". The second task being "WiFi Net Action Reconnect", with the same "IF" condition as the first task. Not only does this fix my SOD problems, but it will also save you quite a bit of battery when not in use for long periods of time. There will be a slight (10-20 sec.) delay waiting for the WiFi to reconnect after you turn the screen on (as long as it's been more than 5 min of course), but it's definitely worth it. The reason I have a 5 minute wait is so that downloads can finish before they are cut off, you can set the wait time longer if your downloading times take longer. Overall, this did the trick for me on SOD.
*EDIT* I did also get ahold of a much better WiFi management application called Green Power. Instead of having Tasker turn off the WiFi after 5 minutes of the screen being off no matter what, Green Power throws in a few more conditions to look for. Through Green Power I have it set to turn off the WiFi after 20sec of the screen being off IF WiFi traffic is at 1Kb or less. If it is not at 1Kb or less, the app will re-check the traffic every 10sec until it is at or below that level, then shut it off. Also, while the display is off, Green Power will re-enable the Wifi for 2min every 30min to allow data sync to occur. When the screen is turned on, WiFi will be re-enabled automatically. However, if the device can't successfully connect (after 30sec) OR if the strength at connection is less than 20% signal, the WiFi will be temporarily disabled so that there is no battery wasted continually trying to connect/stay connected. This setup is perfect for finishing a download after the screen goes off and then putting the WiFi to sleep, and quickly giving up on the reconnect if there is low/no signal and trying again later. This also fixes the SOD for me, with better overall management than what Tasker can provide as far as WiFi is concerned.

I was getting SoD all the time with any ROM that I used, no matter 7.1.0 or 7.2. So recently i started fresh on a 7.1.0 stable rom and moved the ROM from SD to EMMC, but the problems still persisted.
After seeing this thread, it gave me some insight regarding the root problem... For me, it seemed that wifi being on when the screen was off was the culprit. So I downloaded the free app called "Easy Battery Saver+ Task Killer" found here:

I set it to the "General Power Saving Mode" profile, which basically turns off the wifi whenever the screen is off.

The problems I see here are that there is no WiFi traffic check (at least from what you've explained) before it kills the WiFi, and the Task Killer part. Task Killers actually cause more battery usage because the Android System will have to use more battery to re-start many of the killed processes. This is because the OS is programmed to keep some/most of those background processes running and will continually re-start them no matter how many times a task-killer stops them. It is better to have apps such as Ram Manager Pro (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111145) or V6 SuperCharger script (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276) to optimize your RAM for much better smoothness and crisp response, with much better battery savings. Combine one (or both depending on what parts you use for different activities) with Green Power app, which will give a hand-full of extra conditions to look for before turning off the WiFi at screen off and thus fixing your SOD and providing better performance with extra battery savings. I hope this helps!

[Q] Batter Drain When Not Using N10

I am not sure if this is a legit complaint, but sometimes I don't use my N10 for a few days and my tablet will be completely drained. I really only use my tablet for some general browsing/emails/videos. I generally turn off all automatic updates/notifications/etc as I know I may go days between use and want to conserve as much battery life as possible.
With that said I have noticed lately that my entire battery will drain after 3-5 days even if I am not using. Is that just the case? Or should I expect to not lose too much battery when inactive. I looked and 90% of the batter drain was the Android OS.
Any help would be appreciated.

When your N10 is sleeping, you still have several things happening such as looking for updates, synchronizing RSS feeds (like your greader), WIFI connection and communication. By looking at the programs that consume the most battery during those times, you can start tackling them 1 by 1. There are a few apps that will help with battery life and to reduce drain. You can also try turning WIFI off when not in use and you don't want updates. You can also change your WIFI - Advanced settings to Keep WIFI on during sleep only when you are plugged in. You can google battery life during sleeps as there are lots of threads about this topic, which is more Android related than N10.

Just like SmokinCharger said there are other apps running, try turning off Sync initially and don't forget to turn off WiFi, this may save a little your battery, if it doesn't try uninstalling some apps that may cause this, like Facebook.

That graph looks exactly like a wakelock going on all the time and your tablet never actually sleeps. OP probably has the exact same problem.
My own personal Nexus 10 will lose about 1% battery every 20 days when sleeping.

Do you have your N10 set as a media server? If not, media server could be just looking for changes in your N10 in order to have media available - i.e. downloaded a jpg and to show up in Gallery. I believe there is a setting to not allow it to auto detect, but I don't remember where in the settings it is.

Don't have it set up as a media server. Like I said I really don't use it too much.
Enigma - you only lose 1 percent? How is yours set up?

While i may not say there is a wakelock, you can clearly see that because the app has been on and running for over 14 hours time that that process is what is causing the wakelock and draining all your battery. I forget how to fix the media scanner thing, I know I have seen it before in the forum for the Galaxy nexus, which was my old phone. What Media Scanner is is the process that scans your storage for files so that it has an index of what is on the device and so it can display the files and folders for you in Windows. most likely Media Scanner is stuck on a specific file and cant get past it so the process is staying on forever.
My personal setup is the RaSaber ROM (not available anymore) 4.2.2 and KTManta kernel (whatever the last 4.2.2 version was). I probably will never upgrade to 4.3 because this setup is perfectly smooth and the only bugfix that 4.3 brings that I would ever care about does not matter to me since I never hit the bug (playing video in specific apps using hardware rendering). I mainly use my tablet for games and book reading on trips, so it goes long periods without use these days. I never charge it in between because I know it will still have basically the same exact battery level as I left it whenever the next time I pick up the tablet is. I posted some screenshots before in some other thread a while back because no one believed me on the battery life. I went something like 70 or so days of idle and was at 97 or 98% still, then went on to use it for gaming and got like 7 hours of screen on time still before I needed to charge the thing.

Your tablet is searching for more media, maybe you can check the settings and see if there's anything set up to be syncing. Also you can try installing another ROM to check.

I had a similar problem, after upgrading to Android 4.3 a couple months back. The battery seemed to run down much quicker when the screen was turned off. However, the problem seems to have gone away now. I'm not sure if there was some media scan or whatever running in 4.3 that finally finished or if it was a webpage I had loaded in my browser that kept refreshing itself. See if you can reproduce the problem with all browsers, email, video players turned off. Check the app switcher to make sure nothing is loaded. If so, the problem might be in the OS itself. Maybe it will go away with time, as it did for me. :victory:

You can try leaving it off, the battery will stand by then . And as Nexus 10 boots really fast you won't see any problems (mine has 2GB free and booted in 20-25sec).

I found this in relation to this topic on a different site:
"All you need to reset is that media scanner: Settings > Apps > All > Media Storage: Force stop & Clear data. Then, reboot."
Most people seem to think this works. In a follow up, someone posted this:
"I had the same problem and none of these fixes worked. It turns it that my Spotify was the problem. It had crashed and could not find the media files i had downloaded. I uninstalled Spotify and that solved the problem"

A temporary fix for battery drain.

By now, most of you know there is a problem with battery drainage on the Snapdragon version. I along with many other people have fixed this by doing the following steps:
1. Clear Cache
2. Factory Reset
3. Opt out of all background reporting to Google and Samsung. (Google Location is okay)
4. Don't update any of the pre-installed apps through the play store that your not going to use.
5. Turn off auto update in the pay store.
6. Disable any app you don't want in the application settings.
7. Set location settings to GPS only.
8. Set WiFi to sleep when the screen is off or stay awake only when charging.
9. Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth scanning.
Last but not least DO NOT use an SD card unless your phone doesn't have the ejection bug. Every time you see the SD notification your phone is scanning the SD card. This can use a lot of power in the background as it wakes up the phone and doesn't allow it to go into its deep sleep state.
Also make sure you set it up as a new device instead of copying information from an old phone.
(Some are also reporting an improvement by just turning off Google and Samsung background reporting without even doing a factory reset.)
(Also DO NOT disable any packages using a package disabler app) Just disable apps you don't want through the application settings. I along with many others have reported worse battery life after disabling some of the packages.
For those of you (1 of you) saying this is pure snake oil, the following screenshots make for some compelling proof that it is not.
The first set of screenshots are of my battery performance before taking these steps and then some screenshots after taking these steps.

I've also disabled scanning for nearby devices, since my environment doesn't have any I can or want to connect to 98% of the time (and it can/will wake the WiFi w/o charging battery use to WiFi IIRC).
SM-G935A (US AT&T):
Settings > Connections > More connection Settings > Nearby device scanning > Off

I followed these steps this morning. I got excited when I saw in GSam that it was held awake for 0 seconds but since then it's still showing me held awake. Perhaps something I'm installing, I do notice screenwise is much higher for battery drain now. I drained a lot installing a ton of new apps so I can't go by anything yet but it seems the battery is more steadily depleting and losing less while idle. I'm interested in seeing how it performs after I go through this first cycle. Here's some screens
after reset SOT 1:47 58% left
before SOT 5:33 2% left
see how it seems to be more steady now, maybe I'm imagining it.

This post is snake oil.
Any 'fix' that starts with "clear cache" is not a fix.

I think that may be throwing out the baby with the bath water ... I don't know whether the cache has a direct effect or not, but the other settings seem to have a measurable impact.

I wonder the true reason. I tried those steps before and that does not do the trick for me. Also, Bluetooth will sometimes just decide to eat 5% of the battery for no reason. However, the phone I get for my girlfriend (gold color, I got silver), without any adjustment out of the box can just get great battery life. Like without turn off anything. GPS is high accuracy, everything you mentioned in the post she has it on the regular setting, wifi on all the time, scanning device. The battery just keep doing great for her but terrible for me. I'm so confused regarding to this issue. Then I also tried package disabler on her phone, and it's still doing great.

Clearing the cache may do nothing at all. I am just sharing the steps I took to improve my battery life. You're right though. Clearing the cache most likely is not what fixed it.
The other things I have listed though (especially opting out of the Google background reporting) has improved mine and others battery life immensely. Many people have reported much better battery life after disabling the background reporting.
Like I said, I'm just listing what I did to improve my battery from draining 18% overnight in standby to only losing 2% overnight in standby.

The "fix" is to change to exynos

Wish I could man. I don't really like buying phones out right anymore ever since getting Jump On Demand through T-Mobile. Having 3 upgrades a year without paying anything upfront is awesome.

Yeah I understand. It really is to bad that it has this drain, hopefully they will patch it over soon with a fix for you u.s guys.

I like the phone a lot so I'm hoping as well. If they don't have it patched by the time the G5 and HTC 10 get here, I still have 1 upgrade left until July so I may take advantage of it and get one of those two.

You most be talking about the s7 because my edge is great it's been off charge for 12hrs and my battery is at 75%

Nope....We are in the Edge forums. If you haven't seen. Many are having battery problems with the Snapdragon version of the Edge. There are many threads you can check out here.
Now I am getting great battery life but I had to put up with terrible battery life for nearly 5 days.

I have att edge and my battery life has been super impressive I didn't do much either just disabled couple apps screen 40% auto bright wifi BT always on location when I need I been averaging 7 1/2 hour sot, kinda reminds me when I me and my wife had g2 I had amazing battery life and my wife's phone sucked ass, I feel like some phones are duds

Anyway to turn of the background reporting without doing a factory reset?

I did the steps above last night and today is my first day. To be honest it seems similar to before but I will give it some time. My WiFi is always taking 50%+ on gsam even before. Any fix for this?

Looks like you have the WiFi bug. I had it as well when I disabled a bunch of packages. Have you disabled any packages?
Also, you could try changing the way your WiFi sleeps. Try changing it to only staying on when charging.
There is no way your WiFi should be using that much power.

Yes. Go to:
Settings - Applications - Google
Click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner and then go to Usage and Diagnostics.
For the Samsung reporting it is under the Privacy section in your settings menu.
