By now, most of you know there is a problem with battery drainage on the Snapdragon version. I along with many other people have fixed this by doing the following steps:
1. Clear Cache
2. Factory Reset
3. Opt out of all background reporting to Google and Samsung. (Google Location is okay)
4. Don't update any of the pre-installed apps through the play store that your not going to use.
5. Turn off auto update in the pay store.
6. Disable any app you don't want in the application settings.
7. Set location settings to GPS only.
8. Set WiFi to sleep when the screen is off or stay awake only when charging.
9. Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth scanning.
Last but not least DO NOT use an SD card unless your phone doesn't have the ejection bug. Every time you see the SD notification your phone is scanning the SD card. This can use a lot of power in the background as it wakes up the phone and doesn't allow it to go into its deep sleep state.
Also make sure you set it up as a new device instead of copying information from an old phone.
(Some are also reporting an improvement by just turning off Google and Samsung background reporting without even doing a factory reset.)
(Also DO NOT disable any packages using a package disabler app) Just disable apps you don't want through the application settings. I along with many others have reported worse battery life after disabling some of the packages.
For those of you (1 of you) saying this is pure snake oil, the following screenshots make for some compelling proof that it is not.
The first set of screenshots are of my battery performance before taking these steps and then some screenshots after taking these steps.
I've also disabled scanning for nearby devices, since my environment doesn't have any I can or want to connect to 98% of the time (and it can/will wake the WiFi w/o charging battery use to WiFi IIRC).
SM-G935A (US AT&T):
Settings > Connections > More connection Settings > Nearby device scanning > Off
I followed these steps this morning. I got excited when I saw in GSam that it was held awake for 0 seconds but since then it's still showing me held awake. Perhaps something I'm installing, I do notice screenwise is much higher for battery drain now. I drained a lot installing a ton of new apps so I can't go by anything yet but it seems the battery is more steadily depleting and losing less while idle. I'm interested in seeing how it performs after I go through this first cycle. Here's some screens

see how it seems to be more steady now, maybe I'm imagining it.

I think that may be throwing out the baby with the bath water ... I don't know whether the cache has a direct effect or not, but the other settings seem to have a measurable impact.

I wonder the true reason. I tried those steps before and that does not do the trick for me. Also, Bluetooth will sometimes just decide to eat 5% of the battery for no reason. However, the phone I get for my girlfriend (gold color, I got silver), without any adjustment out of the box can just get great battery life. Like without turn off anything. GPS is high accuracy, everything you mentioned in the post she has it on the regular setting, wifi on all the time, scanning device. The battery just keep doing great for her but terrible for me. I'm so confused regarding to this issue. Then I also tried package disabler on her phone, and it's still doing great.

Clearing the cache may do nothing at all. I am just sharing the steps I took to improve my battery life. You're right though. Clearing the cache most likely is not what fixed it.
The other things I have listed though (especially opting out of the Google background reporting) has improved mine and others battery life immensely. Many people have reported much better battery life after disabling the background reporting.
Like I said, I'm just listing what I did to improve my battery from draining 18% overnight in standby to only losing 2% overnight in standby.

Wish I could man. I don't really like buying phones out right anymore ever since getting Jump On Demand through T-Mobile. Having 3 upgrades a year without paying anything upfront is awesome.

I like the phone a lot so I'm hoping as well. If they don't have it patched by the time the G5 and HTC 10 get here, I still have 1 upgrade left until July so I may take advantage of it and get one of those two.
You most be talking about the s7 because my edge is great it's been off charge for 12hrs and my battery is at 75%

Nope....We are in the Edge forums. If you haven't seen. Many are having battery problems with the Snapdragon version of the Edge. There are many threads you can check out here.
Now I am getting great battery life but I had to put up with terrible battery life for nearly 5 days.
I have att edge and my battery life has been super impressive I didn't do much either just disabled couple apps screen 40% auto bright wifi BT always on location when I need I been averaging 7 1/2 hour sot, kinda reminds me when I me and my wife had g2 I had amazing battery life and my wife's phone sucked ass, I feel like some phones are duds
Anyway to turn of the background reporting without doing a factory reset?
I did the steps above last night and today is my first day. To be honest it seems similar to before but I will give it some time. My WiFi is always taking 50%+ on gsam even before. Any fix for this?

Looks like you have the WiFi bug. I had it as well when I disabled a bunch of packages. Have you disabled any packages?
Also, you could try changing the way your WiFi sleeps. Try changing it to only staying on when charging.
There is no way your WiFi should be using that much power.

Settings - Applications - Google
Click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner and then go to Usage and Diagnostics.
For the Samsung reporting it is under the Privacy section in your settings menu.

Just updated to the x10 after my samsung galaxy died on me, so far i am rather happy - except for the lack of root, but that will come.
I have noticed many complaints on the forum about battery life, and have experienced the same thing myself. From my experience, i think this looks like the same issue that was faced on a leak of 1.6 for the galaxy - it was referred to as the "No Sleep Bug".
TBH, the name says it all - for some reason, in many builds of android 1.6, phones were not sleeping correctly. There are many theories as to why, from cpu not being allowed to sleep, to permanent communication with google servers.
Despite all these different theories, one thing seemed to fix the problem - turning off all location services. Some people argue that a different carrier build, turning off just 'share with google' under location, turning off just AGPS etc. would fix it, but from my experience, the only real way to fix the issue was to turn off all GPS usage unless you need it. The once you have used it, reboot your phone.
This fix obviously sucks, and a new fix has recently been released by a veritable android-demigod around the Galaxy.

Now, from my experience, no sleep behave exactly the same way on the x10 as it does on the Galaxy;
1) I turn of all location services, and my battery life at least doubles.
2) After said turning off of services, 'spare parts' no longer says 100% running time under battery usage - in fact it can be as low as 10%.
These two factors are identical to my experience with Galaxy. SO; is there any way drakaz's fix can be applied to our X10's? It seems to me that the files he mods are standard Android system files, not sony/samsung specific.
Now i am no developer, so i dont know it this is possible - the first question that comes to mind for me is "do we need root access, or can this be done through developer tools using the android SDK?"
Can anyone help shed anymore light on this?
Seems to work for me. I disabled all location services. Spare Parts went down from 100% to 7.6%.
I'll just have to enable GPS when I need to use it..

Turn your screen brightness from manual to auto, spare parts will now start showing proper running stats, no more 100% running.
The screen is a little dark in auto but it will cure the 100% running.
GPS and location services etc make no difference to my X10i, I am running the 1.6 version unbranded UK handset, the only thing to stop mine running 100% is to put the screen on Auto.

LOL... this is already going the way of the Galaxy thread!
My phone came out of the box with auto-brightness and i never changed that option, yet i still had no sleep.
Drakaz has done some fairly deep digging and is next to certain that it is an artefact of the geolocation bug discussed in the thread in which the problem was fixed.

Me neither.. I was wondering about that myself!..
Although I'd half assumed that they were referring to the total "up-time" figure which you can see at the bottom of the "about phone"; "Status" screen.. But perhaps not.?
Spare Parts is a standalone Program ...
(i don't know for sure if it is in the market or downloadable as .apk from somewhere here in the forum ...)

Spare parts is indeed available from the market - it is a much more powerful tool for indicating battery usage than the regular android methods. The galaxy stared on 1.5 which had NO indicator of battery usage statistics at all, so we all learned about spare parts very fast.
Perhaps that is why no x10 users have realised about the potential no sleep bug; because so far only the android usage indicators have been used?...
Anyway, hopefully this can help us all understand the way our phones are working better together

I'm also experiencing "No sleep bug" after i used GPS. I use Battery Graph to plot my power consumption and after I use GPS, I can clearly see that power consumption is high even if i turn the phone in plane mode.
In addition SE widget, used to turn on/off GPS, seems to not work very well for me. So, to fix the bug, i manually disable GPS in parameter menu and restart my phone. After that power consumption is hardly null (20% in 8h with MP3 on almost all the time).

Do you have 3G always on?
My phone has no trouble sleeping.
Gps hasn't really been an issue but I keep it off when not needed.
Here's my solid settings:
1) No auto sync
2) No moxier
3) Gps off
4) Restart after using wireless
As long as it's like this my phone lasts 2 days easily

Yes, but I made a lot of test with and without 3G enabled and 3G seems not to be a problem for me. I think my problem comes from GPS.

I have been playing with mine for a month to work out what caused mine to not go into sleep, I keep GPS wifi etc on 24/7 but in spare parts I was running 100%, after numerous reinstalls and removing everything i chanced on turning on auto screen brightness, now when i unplug my x10 the running sits at the correct level.
No Geolocation bug here
I have this problem with 100% on and off. Sometimes when I check its under control (~10%), other times its at 100%. I have GPS off, no WiFi, auto brightness... don't know why it sometimes just gets stuck at 100% :/
I installed Spare Parts and saw that my phone was never sleeping, even though it was on standby all the time.
This was caused by the location by antenna feature.
Ever since i unchecked that feature i've had around 50-60 hours of uptime, with a few calls and a lot of texts.

With the new firmware the problem of battery dissapears completely
There is a known issue with network location detection in android 1.6. I had the same issue with my galaxy and it was solved. Now that we have root, we can hopefully do the same.
Also, br aware that I have found spare parts to actually stop the phone from sleeping, as well as tapatalk. I suggest rebooting after using either program.

Actually that issue is fixed in the latest update so it's already fixed without needing root.
Which firmware? I know I'm still experiencing it.
RBA020 solved the battery issues for me.
Where in spare parts does it show you if your phone has been sleeping?
you don't need spare parts. Just dial *#*#4636#*#* and click battery history and then the running bar.

I hope this means that under Location, you had Wireless Networks and Assisted GPS enabled.
One question tho... how did you isolate this feature as the one that was keeping the system awake?
I just found that my phone has been running most of the time, I see Running at 100% under Battery History. Then I select Partial Wake usage and see Android System has the largest share. But what part of Android System? how does one get to know?
I know from having a Samsung galaxy and being part of the androidforums community that was going nuts until Simone found a bug report with Google saying that network location was stopping devices from sleeping. We had root so a Dev applied a patch to services.odex and voila! Phones were napping again.

Hmm... time to give this a try... so is it just Wireless Network or also AGPS that causes this problem?

Update after turning location off completely
Well first run with all location methods disabled (I can still enable GPS quickly via a widget when I need to use it)... the battery performance is up phenomenally!!
I charged fully before going to bed last night, then kept the phone unplugged... woke up and found the battery was at 97%. This has never happened to me.
Ok, one thing tho, I use Juice Defender with night time schedule, so my wifi and 3G were off during most of the night. Anyways, its been around 3 hours since I woke up, and I've been using the phone on and off to do some browsing.
The battery is now at 93%.
I do not use any other aid other than Juice Defender... no task killers, no startup editors. Will update on how the rest of the day progresses.

I too would like to hear a bit more. Could the OP please elaborate?
I'm running the latest FW and although my battery life increased exponentially, I find that it's not going to sleep anymore! I had close to 50 hours battery life and now I repeat everything to get just under 20 hours.
I don't use task killers and crap anymore, just before I put my phone away. If I don't, I have a trillion programs running with like 40mb of RAM free. Although I understand this is Linux based, these programs are RUNNING and not idle. All my **** is draining the battery again after a clean reinstall of everything. What a bummer.

@bongd, by latest FW, do you mean the R2BA020? If yes, then you shouldn't be affected by the problem being reported here. I'm still on R1FB001, which apparently has this Android 1.6 bug related to location.
As in my case, simply by disabling location settings (even though this reports that network location is the culprit, I disabled them all), the phone is now able to suspend itself and basically consume very little battery in standby.
Personally, I dont see any issue with lot of applications running and having little RAM left because I trust the Android system to manage it efficiently. Furthermore, the RAM on these phones is not as fast as what you would see typically on desktop systems, so it actually helps having things around in memory rather than aggressively cleaning it out. I suggest you use Spare Parts to isolate your battery drain, there might be some app that is misbehaving and hogging systems resources. Also turning off very frequent updates/refresh intervals in some applications is the way forward.
I found through trial and error that fancy widgets keeps my phone from sleeping.sad cause I really want to use it.

Thanks, j4mm3r. I am using R2BA020. It looks like I have some diagnostic troubleshooting to do when I get home.
Sitting here at work charging my phone, it isn't loading craploads of programs anymore. And it seems to be sleeping okay. I'll play around when I have some free time.
Fixed my problem big time
Hey guys,
I just wanted to throw my two cents into the pot.
OK – so after experimenting with Task Killers, Task Managers, Spare Parts, Juice Defender, etc. I came to the conclusion that they (for the most part) did more bad than good. It was getting to the point that I was just starting to accept that “The X10 just has ****ty battery life” end of story.
I also read in a Google released post on the web, that there are a number of reasons that Task Killers, etc. are actually not required to end tasks. Android actually has a fairly intelligent and systematic approach to killing tasks that are not being used. I haven’t used any sort of proprietary battery saver, task ender, startup cleaner, etc. and I’ve been having the best phone performance since I got the headset.
The time now (Eastern Standard) is 3:30pm on Monday. The last time I charged my phone was Saturday evening at 6pm, and currently I am showing 24% battery remaining. Let those numbers do the talking!
My settings are:
Wi-Fi always off unless I am going to be actively using it (browsing)
Using Phone info, I change WCDMA Preferred to GSM Only (enables 2g instead of 3g without disabling data altogether)
GPS always off
Screen settings, brightness, etc. I believe have a much smaller effect than people tend to believe. The SINGLE BIGGEST factors for me, and noticing this huge increase in battery life are:
Settings -> About Phone -> Software Update -> UNCHECK Automatic Search (this constantly searches the market, etc. for app updates and what not)
Cycle power immediately after charging. Once my phone completes its charge, I turn off and then on again.
I hope that some people can enjoy moderately extended battery life as I have. I am SO ecstatic to be at HOUR 43 and still at 20%+
Worth mentioning also that I am on Rogers (Canada) and have not received any updates, so this extended battery life is not a result of a firmware update.
How I Fixed My Batter Life Problem
My Incredible would run dead in about 4 hrs doing nothing. I finally dug into several "task killer" programs and found that about 20 - 30 apps were invisibily running in the background constantly. As soon as I permanently killed them, my battery life went to normal. I can now get about 2 days of normal use on 1 charge. Even a day of pretty heavy use will last almost all day.
So for me, it was all the new apps I installed when I first got the phone that were running in the background. The free "task killer" program was not showing them. I finally found the app called "System Panel." It was the ONLY app that would show me all the "invisible" apps that were still running invisibly in the background and let me kill them. Once I killed them with System Panel, they stayed dead and the free "task killer" program could auto-kill them from them on.
Not sure why the free programs could not see the rogue apps, but my battery life is GREAT now.

I'm running R2BA023 and I am struggling to get a full day from the phone at the moment. It normally lasts around 12 hours and then its flat.
However, I ran the Telenor R2BA020 update and I manage to get a full day with ease.
I have just done a clean install of R2BA023 Generic UK "root" edtion and going to see how I get on. What I did notice before is that the phone was not returning to a idle state.

Not using any of these. New phone so doubt battery responsible. Do you think its the wallpaper? Just made it through one day at college.

That must be a really hard battery sucking wallpaper you got there mate. With only 2 h screen on I could last at least 2 days without charging.
Do you have s-voice on and wake up command? These were the only apps that consumed that much as I remember. Or did you run any battery consuming apps? It shouldn't be the wallpaper but you can still try yourself.
If you are on stock rom it could also be the KitKat update. I read a lot about it being pretty battery unfriendly.

Dont use s- voice or wake up command, but may have left apps running in RAM maybe. Battery has been 3 hours screen on most days so I dont know whats happened!

Can you go one day without it and post your Battery stats? It's kinda hard to believe it is the wallpaper because:
1. Your screen was only on for 2-3 hours
2. The screen consumption is lower than Android OS and System
Does the wallpaper have any extra features?

There are extra features, but I have turned these off.
Did use internet but not for long
I will try changing the wallpaper. Can't think what else it could be - my phone was warming up in my pocket, with nothing in recent apps. Also wouldn't a live wallpaper be included in OS and System rather than anywhere else?

It shouldn't be consuming when screen is off. Just checked mine:
4 hours on with screen consuming 47% and still 80% charged locked my phone consumes like 1% in 6 hours
(But I'm rooted and fully modded to your phones defense)
Edit. Unless you can say that it doesn't consume that much when not having the wallpaper I would guess it is a KitKat issue or your battery really has a problem

@ant2555 sorry I don't know since I was rooted since jelly bean I never had the chance to look into that. I just read a lot about it being a known 4.4.2 issue. The 4.4.3 update is said to get rid of that

Ok, I'll get back to you either tomorrow or the day after depending on results.
Final question for now, do you know what the common causes of "android system" using that much battery are?
I've been using that wallpaper for almost 4 months without a drain issue. It's not the wallpaper. (maxelus.net is one of the better wallpaper devs. You need not worry about these causing a drain.)
The wallpaper does have a setting for battery saving in its settings (all the way at the bottom as 'Battery. Wallpaper Speed'). Try turning that on.
From the looks of it, you have Sync turned on. Turn if off. (drag down the notidication bar and scroll to the Sync toggle.)
Also, turn off all location services (In settings and in Google Settings(that's an app)).
And try disabling all sounds under settings --> device --> Sounds --> system. (You can elave haptic feedback on if you want.)

I discovered that after charging my phone a couple of times I get a false charge which can imitate battery drain, try this code *#0228# after hitting it click Quick Start, hope that helps, if not do a complete wipe for all apps and only download trusted ones. Good luck
Android is and kernel killing my battery. Don't know what has changed in last few days but I'm getting 5 to 8 hours on a full charge

Sorry for a few days, delay been doing some extensive testing. I tried without the SD card and my battery stats became even worse! See picture!

Ahh, Google Services. That annoying bugger again. It's been causing problems on several devices.
What you can try:
Google Settings > Ads > turn on "Opt out of interest-based ads"
Disable back up under Settings > Backup & reset > uncheck "Back up my data".
Turn off Google Now.
And you can try uninstalling the recent updates to Google Play Services under settings > Applicationmanager > All > Google Play Services. Force stop, clear data, clear cache and uninstall updates (be sure to turn off auto update apps in Google Play Store first or it'll come back nearly instantly).
I've noticed this phone has hit or miss battery life depending on what you have installed, greenified and frozen. I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread where everyone could share their battery life tips and tricks on this phone.
Below I posted what I have done to maximize battery life. I have not rooted my phone yet, so none of the below tips require root.
I disabled all bloatware apps that came with the phone. I did not disable any of the Asus applications.
I utilize the Asus autostart manger and denied auto start to all my applications except music applications, messenger applications, and google photo sync.
battery sucks. drain to much.
Just use until you have 5% free battery, this should make at least your day
With Android OS taking so much thanks to lollipop, there is not a lot to hope.
We wont see a good battery improvement until we get 5.1
Luckily, that is in the future for this device acc. to Asus.
Since the issue seems to primarily be Android os draining the battery I don't think most battery saving measures will make a difference. We will just have to wait for an update
When I was looking at the phone reviews people were claiming 8 hours screen on time, I can barely get 2 hours screen on time.
The problem I'm having is that the phone never goes to sleep and is constantly awake. Has anyone else seen this issue?

I had the same problem after the latest update, no deepsleep in BetterBatteryStats (I'm rooted), I wiped everything and now it goes to deepsleep.

I'm on 2.18.40.12 (ZE551ML of course), I restored the phone from backup & restore in settings (It may take 30 minutes or more). Before restoring I had 45+% of Android OS during the night, now 20% more or less, but, as said, also in BBS I can see deepsleep in frequencies.
Someone posted on Zentalk to turn off remote lock and scan for security threats in google settings. Not sure if it helps or not.

I wiped my phone yesterday and restored back up like you suggested and it seams to have sorted out my wake lock issue. I wonder why that is?

Glad you solved, but don't know why, maybe they are working hard on the firmware and there are lot of changes that can cause problem, maybe we have to wipe after every update, Intel processor and Lollipop are so unstable right now!

Ok so this is my battery with a normal day of use... Tomorrow ill show the results with your sugestions. My normal days have gsm calls(normal phone calls) whasapp (chat) youtube, twich, game like plant vs zombies 2, look at gmail, surfing internet, taking pics like 25 today.
I notice that battery drains a lot more while photo app open.
I use doble sim as you can see
If you want to test app battery drain, try GSAM Battery Monitor, or for some extra functionality the Pro version. Also very useful to determine what is causing wakelocks when you run into them.

Everyone is always wondering about Android using the most battery. Without doing some in depth debugging and tracing I would guess Houdini falls under Android. Because the ZenFone 2 uses the Intel processor a binary conversion for ARM instructions takes place with Houdini. More than likely you have a lot of apps native for ARM.
Force closing asus support app and zenui services app from apps setting gives me good amount of battery boost. Apart I have also disabled google books, movies, plus etc. I don't know if its placebo effect but someone can try and confirm. These app tend to restart at times so if you feel the battery decreasing at high rates again, make sure you force close them again.
Roughly speaking, I tend to get 3-5 min per percentage of screen on time with this which totals to 5 to 6 hrs on SOT on continous usage. Without the apps being force closed, I barely get 2min/%. The usage scenarios are normal web browsing, chats etc. This is using mobile data. It gets even better with wifi.
Try and let me know if this helps.
Maybe I don't use my phone as much as other people. I posted this last night on another forum. My phone was unplugged at 07:00, It's now 21:00. I have 80% battery left and the battery monitor shows 3 days left
I have received email, 3 phone calls and text messages. I checked Twitter a couple of times with the browser. I have read Google News a couple of times and played GSN Casino for about 20 minutes.
In Auto Start Manager I turned off Docs, Sheets, Skype, Slides, Translate, Amazon Kindle, Data Transfer and Web Storage. Everything else is Allow, but I have no social networking applications installed.
Its looks like battery life is a right mixed bag. At the start of the week I was suffering wake lock issue, my phone wouldn't go into deep sleep and was constantly awake. I wiped and restored from backup which seams to fix the issue.
Got up this morning and it looks like the wake lock issue is back. I don't know what to do to fix it.
Feel like giving up on the phone and sending it back if I can

it's a big "NOPE" for me to update, i'm still on official DEC rom because of this drain issue.
Battery life is good on 8.1 no issue for me getting 5-6 hours SOT on gaming.
Never had battery drain problems. Only "issue" is notification led not blinking.
Just noticed that led light is no longer blinking when notifications arrive. Light stays on only when screen is off. Also Bluetooth is constantly disconnecting.
Ambient display isn't working for me.
Led notifier is also not blinking anymore!
Led not blinking, proximity sensor doesn't work properly all the time, some scrolling lag. That's what I've got so far

Nothing for me, even got ten hours of screen after some cycles. Led doesn't bother me and it's the only thing i noticed.
Yes, the LED is always on, which is annoying, but the bigger issue is there is no change in the battery drain. I charged to 100%, set the phone down and did not move it or use it overnight. 8 hours later almost 14% of battery was drained. I have tried everything I can think of to try, including turning off high accuracy location, not allowing any location things like safe area, etc. and still I get this drain even when the phone is not in use. Android kernel and system consumed 85% of that usage, and System UI, Play Store and Phone Services accounted for 7%! SO basically, basic Android paired with the A1 hardware seems to be the issue and I don't know that there is any fix for that.
At one point, I thought an upgrade to the A2 was going to be a no brainer, but with the issues with updates being broken and this battery drain issue that nobody seems to be able to pinpoint and resolve, I am thinking I may not buy ANY other Xiaomi. It may be time to try something else because the only way I can get two days of battery is to turn on airplane mode when the phone is not in use!

Dunno what to say man. Mine is below.

And now it would appear that there is an issue with airplane mode.
I put the phone into Airplane mode at 2300 last night with 90% battery and did not pay attention to it. This morning I turned to phone on to find there was only 69% battery left, and WiFi was working. (see screen shot) WTF???? I have started using airplane mode to keep the battery drain to a minimum when the phone is not in use, and now it would appear that this doesn't work either.
I am REALLY getting frustrated with Android and Xiaomi as it seems that every time they do an update, something else goes bump! I have gone from totally happy with the AI when I first got it to being ready to write off Xiaomi as a company I would consider for purchase.

Thanks for the thoughts, but unless I totally misunderstand what airplane mode is, WiFi should not be active when airplane mode is invoked. You can see by the screen cap that airplane mode is on AND WiFi is active. This seems to be a one off as it has not happened again for the last two days. I turn airplane mode on to stop the overnight battery drain while the phone is doing nothing. I have location set to GPS Only. IIRC play services was just updated 3 days or so ago, so it should have the latest version. I will check it and see though. Again, thanks for the thoughts.

I can't logically understand why you would think it is the hardware causing the issue. If it was hardware, what you are seeing would be happening to every owner of the phone and clearly that is not happening. By saying it is the hardware when you have other software loaded is akin to saying your car's air conditioning doesn't work properly when you have all the windows wound down.
There is something loaded on your phone that is causing the systemUI to be working when you think nothing should be happening. The first thing I see on the screenshot on your phone is that in the top left of the screen you have two non standard icons. That tells me that you have a skin or non standard software constantly running.
The way to solve any issue like this is to go back to basics. I would get the fresh rom and do a Miflash whilst keeping your data. Make sure you do a backup first.
If that does not work, back up your data and do a clean install and check the phone's battery life. Do not load any non google software / app at this stage.
Then each day add one app and test for 24 hours. You will find this issue and the offending app or apps and I would be willing to bet you a few Singhas it will be an app you downloaded not the hardware causing this.

Actually, I think it is a combination of hardware/software, but that is just a WAG. Others have noted the exact same issue without running the same software. My bet would be on the RCS services stuff.

Those icons are my Email client and GSAM Battery Monitor (presently 0.1% and 0.8%) and are the only two constantly running programs other than the stock apps and Sophos (0.3%). Neither use much battery compared to the Android stuff. Presently Kernel is 41.6%, RCS/Phone is 30.3%. SystemUI is 3.3%, Play Services is 2.0% and Phone Services is 1.8%

Good advice. I will do this when I have a few days to play with it. In the interim, it's airplane mode every night. Thanks for the reply. If it turns out to be one of these apps, let me know where to send the Singhas.

A clean install solved it and I have been trouble free since with every update. With over 50 PCs in my office, I could only wish that I had so few issues with Windows updates as I do with Android.
For me, night light auto schedule not working properly.
I can't tether via wifi/bluetoth/usb

Just for grins and giggles, I uninstalled my email client, GSAM, and Sophos, the only programs that run constantly other than system and Line. I then turned my phone off and back on, forced stopped Line, charged it to 100% and set it down with the screen off. It did not move of get used for 8 hours, yet it still used 12% of the battery. (see screenshots) This is better than the 20% with those apps installed, but still not close to what I would consider normal. When I first got the phone, it easily lasted 2-3 days between charges, with 6-7 hours SoT. Overnight would use MAYBE 2% of the battery. Now if I want it to last 2 days I need to turn on airplane mode overnight and then I can make it through a day.
So I guess the next step is to do as you recommended and load up the fresh rom when I have time to mess with it. At least I am now pretty sure that those apps aren't the culprits causing the biggest part of the battery drain. I hate to do it, but I am seriously thinking of a factory reset and seeing if that clears the issue. Would that put me back to Nougat?

So those apps were causing 40% of of the 20% of the battery drain. That is a good start. I am confident there are software issues with your phone. I see you have some GPS app on your home screen, if that was running askew, it might be constantly pinging. That is just a guess.
In things like this, work methodically through it. But of cause a hard reset would be the best way to go. I see no reason why you wouldn't stay on your current version after a hard reset.
If you want to go make to version 7 you would need to use the MiFlash program and a downloaded standard fastboot rom. You may need to do something else to the phone to go back to 7, but I would not think so.
