[Q] What is the ATT - "PDA Enterprise for Good" rate plan - Networking

Hey there,
Looking to understand my rate plan and whether its a good deal or whether I should be in the market for something better.
I signed up with AT&T about two years ago for my first smartphone (EPIX) and got a plan so I could pick up MS Exchange mail.
I explicitly got the plan that did not include "texting" since I'm a data only kinda guy.
Here is the info from my online account description:
Smartphone Bundle without Messaging
- PDA Enterprise for Good
- Price $45.00
- Text N/A
- Data unlimited
I recently bought an unlocked Nexus S i9020A which seems to work great on the old SIM card and works dandy with voice and 3G data service.
Most recent usage for the account online says:
Additional Data Purchased Usage:
Data
GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - GM51/GMD2
63.2 MB of Unlimited
So what I was hoping is for some help interpreting the abbreviations, and plan limits (if any).
My contract has expired so I assume I'll maintain the same rate plan unless I change it or sign up for a new one.
Also is the "tethering" option a fee for using their tethering application, or for the privilege of using my phone as a hot spot period.
I know that's a lot to ask, but if anyone has any ideas or experience in these matters please lt me know.
Thanks

Updating my own post
Data
GPRS WAP UNLTD DOM - GM51/GMD2
GPRS - General Packet Radio Service
[3G HSDPA/HSUPA 850 1900 Mhz 7.2/5.76 Mbps]
WAP - Wireless Application Protocol (service)
UNLTD - Unlimited
DOM - Domestic
GM51 - Good Mobile client 5.1 (guess)
GMD2 - Good Mobile domino 2 (guess)
I suspect the extra (GM51/GMD2) codes are for software I was never given or told about to interact with some kind of Mobile device proxy server for a Business LAN.
Kinda upsets me.
However the "unlimited" data plan is still of interest to me.

What answer are you exactly looking for?

I was looking for information about the billing codes.
And opinions as to whether this plan is average, or something I should consider leaving.
Beyond that I was curious about tethering.
Originally my question was posted to the general section and it was moved to the Network section by moderator.
I believe I found some of the answers, but not all, so I was sharing the information.
If this is inappropriate please feel free to close or dispose of the thread in any suitable way.
Thanks for the reply.
. and I hope I don't come off defensive, I'm really new to this forum. So the accepted conventions and practices here are new to me.

Best Data Plan?

Hi,
I have just given a notice to end my contract with 3 UK. I am using an O2 XDA Exec as in my signature. I will really appreciate some help here!!
Since I have moved to my new place, I have not been able to get a broadband connection due to technical problems with the exchange upgrade. I tried 3 different companies with the same result - tech problem.
I cannot access the internet from home except the dialup which ofcourse is not uptospeed.
My question is What is the best data /voice plan out there which would allow me to access the internet through my Mobile at home (via bluetooth connection to my desktop/laptop)?
Any suggestions will be more than welcome.
Ciao

T-Mobile FlexT with the Web & Walk Pro add-on would be your best option.
None of the other networks are currently very competitive at all.
And you would probably get something like a Vario II free which would be better to use as the modem since it supports HSDPA.
T- Mobile Web N Walk
Thanx for a speedy reply. This is what I found on the t-mobile website
"Web’n’walk fair use policy
Subject to coverage. Compatible handset required. Provides unlimited browsing on mobile handsets in the UK. Not applicable to connection via CSD. To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers a fair use policy applies. T-Mobile defines fair use as total UK data (both sent and received) of up to 1GB per month. T-Mobile may contact customers who exceed 1GB of data and ask them to reduce their usage. If data usage is not reduced, notice may be given, after which network protection controls may be applied. Not to be used for other activities (including but not limited to): modem access for computers, internet based video/audio streaming services, peer to peer file sharing, internet based video downloads, internet phone calls and instant messaging. If such use is detected, notice may be given after which network protection controls may be applied. The application of network protection controls will result in a reduced speed of transmission. "
As the use of the mobile as a modem is prohibited, this would mean that I still won't be able to get my Laptop/desktop hooked to the internet.
Any other ideas!!!!
Thanx in advance
Tunndoc
Edited: Sorry I found the laptop version, Thanx for ur help
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=pp_webnwalk_laptop
Hi
T-Mobile also do a WebNWalk PROFESSIONAL for a couple of pounds extra per month. This removes many of the restriction including the modem useage. The only remaining significant restrictions are no VOIP and no MSN type instant messaging - not unreasonable, I suppose, since these are direct competition to their phone and SMS services.
When I signed up, I was told that I had to sign up for the regular WebNWalk service and then upgrade it to the pro version by phoning customer services. This is what I did and it all worked as planned.
Hope this helps.

Free EDGE? ... I got it!

I discovered something ... thought I'd share to see if anyone has any insight.
First off, I do NOT have a data plan with t-mobile. I am out of contract, and have a family plan. No data whatsoever.
I was messing around with Map4PDA (great app!), and since I did not have any WiFi or LAN connection, it opened EDGE to pull map data.
At first, I freaked, and thought I would get some hefty bill in the mail from t-mobile. So, I called t-mobile customer care, and asked the girl how much I would get charged. She said she thought they had a flat rate for data xfer out of a data plan, but she would have to check. She consulted her manager (who didn't know) and 5 other techs. Finally, she found some internal note about it. T-mobile's policy:
If you do not have a data plan, and are able to connect to EDGE, you will not be charged. However, the connection is a fluke, and you will be cut-off shortly thereafter.
That is not the case with me.
I am able to connect, surf the net, download map data, etc. I don't get cut off. I don't want to ruin a good thing (maybe posting this will ruin it?), so I am going to passively test my free EDGE connection over the next couple of weeks, and report back here.
Here is my phone/ROM setup:
I have a t-mobile MDA (HTC Wizard). I flashed it with Faria's AKU 3.3-8mb ROM, and set my t-mobile connection to "T-Mobile WAP". (The other option was "T-Mobile VPN". Not sure what the difference is ...? I know VPN = virtual private network, and WAP generally stands for Wide Area Protocol. Not sure how this relates to cell service though ...)
So, with that setup, I have full access to EDGE on T-Mobile, without a price.
I hope it will last.
Another minor detail: I am in the United States. (I read on another post about t-mobile elsewhere in the world)

Just thought I should point out WAP stands for wireless application protocol.
Sorry for being pedantic.

That link from swingheim is my. I found out that sometimes it will stop working but later it will work. and you can do this with any phone(needs opera mini to work) and even with a prepaid sim card.

Using SmartPhone Connect Plan on TyTn/8525?

I've been thinking about switching from Tmobile to Cingular to benefit from their UMTS network.
Since I already have a TyTN I figured I would order a 3125 and get their Unlimited Smartphone Connect Plan.
I was wondering if this would work with the TyTN and what the settings are.
From what I've been reading online it seems that the Smartphone plan uses Cingular's wap proxy. I was wondering if this would affect the 3G performance.
I wouldn't use the TyTN for tethering (my monthly usage runs around 200-250MB, mostly mail and RSS).
Smartphone Connect Plan
I have the TyTn and have added the Cingular Extended Roms and all is working well... You can add the Cingular Wap settings via cab and depending on the Rom that you have installed, you may or may not have issues with the Express Mail settings and Phone Keypad...
Took me several days to figure out the right combination of Rom and Extended Roms, but I am happy at the moment...
debonairone
I thought I could manually configured the connection... I already have 2 mail accounts setup (one is my work Exchange (push) the other is my personal pop)... don't care much about XpressMail.
I'm running WM6 latest rom.
-If you need XpressMail, go with the SmartPhone connect.
-If you want 200 text messages/month, go with the MediaMax 200 Bundle
Both of those are $19.99, and give you unlimited internet
If you need VPN or isp.cingular, you'll have to get the more expensive PDA connect (or laptop connect) plans.
3G speed is not much worse on wap.cingular if it's worse at all. It's not difficult to setup the data accounts. There are actually very good tutorials on Cingular's website in the help section.
Thanks!
I have no use for the VPN at this point. Xpress mail may be a nice addition since right now I am pulling mail from my personal pop every 30min. Having the push option on this account as well would be nice.
I was just worries that the Smartphone connect plan would not work on a TyTN and that the wap proxy would make things slower (or prevent access to certain pages) but it looks like I'm getting a much cheaper deal yet retain pretty much all the functions I need!
Hi, I have the smartphone connect plan and am running it on my 8525. I bought the phone off eBay new in December and didn't want to get locked into a data contract for 2 years since my contract was up, so I bought the device outright and added this data plan.
I got the smartphone connect unlimited plan. I have been using this since then with good results. On my Cingular account section it actually shows that I have the 8525.
I am actually using it right now as a wireless modem. I have checked the speed and it's around 750 to 1mb overall. I believe it is using the wap.cingular and have full function. I have it pushing my email through my works exchange server and also use it for my personal msn account.
I am on the Cingular MediaNet plan....$19.99 works great here. One thing I would like to point out is that if you have t-mobile...you can just get the $4.99 t-zone..and you can surf all you want and checking emails. Too bad T-mobile's data speed is slow otherwise I would had kept my service.
wow thanks for all the tips! I didn't realize I could get the much cheaper tmobile plan as well.... i'm currently paying $30/month for unlimited data plus wifi which I never use anyways...
In any case from speaking with a few people i think the media max 200 seems like the smartest options as it offers unlimited data plus some text messages and i could use their media (TV) features if needed...
I just gotta figure out how to get the plan since it doesn't seem available to purchase with the Cingular 3125.
You can just add the features/plans you want online after you sign up for Cingular billing at the website.
I used to use T-Mobile as well, and I thought the $4.99 plan only gave you port 80 (http)? I was on an old $19.99/month plan which was unlimited GPRS/EDGE with no Hotspot, which I don't see as an option anymore.

T-Mobile UK GPRS problem? W'n'W Plus and Max mainly

I'm not sure, but i want to ask if is anyone experiencing some GPRS problems. I can connect to inet w/o probs, i can browse web...., but i cannot connect to IRC(using wmirc or pirc), ICQ or MSN(im+435) or i have troubles with ftp(resco I tried passive and active mode) Am I tho only one or something similar is happenig to others? I'm using HTC-Uni(latest WM6 build 17....)
IRC is blocked as far as i know, unless you use wnw+ or wnw-max. IM apps arent allowed just as much as VoIP over webnwalk.
i use wnw, on contract dont know if its wnw+. it worked a week ago?suddenly stopped. ****ing t-mobil.(maybe because they had to pay £200 for inconvenience)will call them
ive heard a few reports of this today, seems tmob might be cracking down on it??
I havent been able to use irc / stream music etc.... since getting my contract (about 3 weeks ago)
i cannot use ftp as well, just thinking if those bastards didnt start blocking all ports except for 21, 80, IMAP, SMTP, POP3 :-( if yes i'll chec my contract and will take some legal actions ( I love compensation for inconvinience)
Stuck
Hello everyone, ive been trying to follow these T-mobile UK GPRS problems, related post because im in the same boat. My msn messenger wont work and ive given up, (use webmessenger: works fine though). Yahoo messenger will not allow me to make pc 2 pc call any more but works for chatting.
However strange, i am begining to suspect T-mobile UK as they are obliged to do, are cracking down on VOIP / IRC protocols.
Also need to mention that skype and msn messenger works fine from my SPV M3100 so its does confuse me a bit.
Now im wondering should i delete this post A.S.A.P before some t-mobile network engineer see's it and gets to work ? Im only a student(as good as pensioner: financially) who lives on his own, so wNw MAX is mostly out of the way, might need to get a broadband connection
Don't delete the post, they probably wouldn't care what you say. (A t-mobile dude was telling me to flash a different rom to my xda, so it would be fully compatible with them!)
Unfortuneatly on t-mobile they do not allow IM services on their web 'n' walk internet I think you'd have to find a wifi point.
i read fair usage policy, its not alloved for w'n'w but for w'n'w plus is no mention of IM. i sent them a letter via their web, so i'm awaiting answer

i'm on wnw+ so im pissed off. i sesnt them a mail on sund. i do not use skype as viop client only for IM. but i cannot use im+(icq...), mchat, msn messenger, irc. pinkies in callcenter are stupid, they told me that they dont provide supp for 3rd party apps (except the **** in tmo's rom - and U must have extrom installed-so no way to have icon for msn). they sent me back nice letter that they recieved my complain and i will get ans within 5working days. its friday 2:11am and still nothing. BTW IM was reason for wnw2wnw+ upgrade. they are ****ing bastards.

Flat rate connection for Softbank Japan

Quick and Dirty
Are you in Japan?
Do you have a Softbank SIM?
Do you have the Packet Flat Rate Full? or the older Packet Houdai? (In Japanese パッケト放題 and パッケト定額フル)
Do you want to use ANY unlocked WM-based phone on Softbank's network?
Then this cab is for you! Install and enjoy.
FAQ
Q: Doesn't the Connection Wizard do this automatically?
A: NO! Don't trust him! He is a Chaotic Evil Connection Wizard.
As many have found out to their disappointment, the Connection Wizard built into most ROMs installs the open-but-expensive Softbank connection. The Connection Wizard will try to set up the 64k digital data plan that charges per 30 seconds instead of per packet and the APN for this account is [email protected] or [email protected] So if you see [email protected] in your data settings, DELETE THOSE SETTINGS! This [email protected] AP is not compatible with the flat rate plans and is charged differently (read: heavily). Some have ended up with bills over 50,000 Yen.
Delete whatever connection the Connection Wizard makes for you before installing this cab.
Q: What does this cab do exactly?
A: It installs a connection with the following information:
Name: Softbank
Modem: Cellular (3G)
Access point: open.softbank.ne.jp
User name: opensoftbank
Password: ****************
Q: Why don't you just tell us the password and we can do it manually?
A: Softbank wouldn't like that.
Last April Softbank changed their password because it was published too widely. This created big problems for many people who were using the old password. To avoid this, I and others with the password have been trying to distribute it by non-public means (email, private messages, writing it on bathroom walls, etc).
Recently, some people who don't know any better have been publishing this information publicly, risking Softbank changing the password yet again, screwing us all. But don't get angry and send them flames . They can't help being that way.
Q: Can I use this connection with MMSLite?
A: Apparently you can, but the MMSLite connection information has been released widely and is available on this site. Do a search.
Q: Why is Softbank so secretive? And why did Softbank change the password? And if the MMSLite connection information has been public for so long, why don't they change that too?
A: Hey now, one question at a time.
The following is speculation, but here goes: I doubt Softbank has any automatic controls on the amount or type of data going through its mobile servers. They are probably worried that if this information gets out that people with SIM accepting notebooks / 3G modem cards can just use this information to get (relatively) cheap, limitless mobile broadband.
The first password change was done by a ROM update to the X01HT (Hermes). At the time, there were few enough X01HTs out there that they could afford to send every customer a 256mb microsd card with the ROM update on it. This ROM upgrade also changed the radio ROM to one which made it much more difficult to unlock the Hermes. Before this, lots of X01HTs were being bought subsidized from Softbank, unlocked, then sold on Ebay for a profit (and a subsequent loss for Softbank). Now that Softbank has more WM-based phones, and has stopped subsidizing handsets so drastically, a four-model, system-wide ROM update looks less and less likely. But it could happen.
The Softbank MMS connection is used system-wide by most of Softbank's phones, both smartphones and dumbphones. Any change to this protocol would be a huge headache for Softbank and is extremely unlikely.
Q: So, if I can get the password somehow I can use my Softbank SIM to surf my laptop and only pay the flatrate fee?
A: Probably. If you have a 3G modem that accepts WSIM cards.
Q: Will you PM me the password?
A: Sure. But it would probably be easier to use one of these links from some people who don't know any better
Q: This cab ROCKS! Who made it?
A: RayB
Q: Hey, where's the cab? Did you forget to attach it like some kind of idiot?
A: Yep. See the next post.
Here you are.
Thank you for your nice post.
By the way I just "discover" (edit : forgot to click on larsuck's link in original post) this: http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/price_plan/packet_full/index.html
Is the new limit for unlimited packet plan 5985yens? It would be a nice news!
There still are informations on the old unlimited packet plan, so I'm wondering if there is a trap...

I can't speak from experience, but I am 99.9% sure this password will work with the new rate. A guy using a stock X02HT on this thread reported that he was okay after switching. And I doubt he took his X02HT into the shop for them to change the AP.
I would switch and give it a try, but I have actually never used more than a couple thousand yen worth of data a month. I get most of my regular sites' feeds cached in using SPB Insight.
I took the dive myself and setup the new data plan, was jsut a quick visit to the local softbank, and all still works fine technically. Just waiting on the revised bill to see if it actually took effect

anybody???
Sorry for the delayed response. My bill was all in order , so you should be safe upgrading to the new data plan from the old 10,000 yen per month plan. But you never know they could change things
I can confirm that the connection.cab works also with Blackstone
I can confirm the connection.cab works with my diamond. I have flashed the x04ht rom found elsewhere on this board.
My billing cycle is as follows:
Usage is charged up to the 24th or so and then bill is released on the 7th of the following month.
I check my usage just now: パケット通信料 ~19,000円
It says that discounts have not yet been applied but after working this out to be something like 250,000 packets, I am a little worried. This is assuming the rate is 0.08 Yen per packet. I figure I have used about the same data as with my actual softbank device (the odd email check [mobile.gmail.com] and the odd browsing [less than 10 minutes of yahoo.co.jp etc]). I really don't use it much at all. I work usually 12 hours a day and I am too beat to mess with my diamond.
My previous months usage (including the same browsing habits and the mobile gmail) only ever peaked at like 60000 packets. Mind you I can only look at past bills in their post-discount-applied state.
I am going to call SB tomorrow and ask them what's up.

The packet count shouldn't change depending on discounts. Only the money charged should change.
Make sure you don't have the m2D weather auto-updating or anything automatic like that running.

Yeah I killed that. I am just waiting for my final bill to be ready in a few days. We tried calling SB and they seemed to not know f'all. One lady even said, and I quote:
"softbank sims are not sim free so if you put it into another non-softbank device it will no longer function and you will have to get another one"
I got off the line with her as soon as I could.

/he sighs. Its hard to know what to say to that kind of stupidity. One can only hope that the girl is just making stuff up. Otherwise, she is just repeating the lies they have distributed to their staff.
Anyway, let us know how it goes. Good luck.
I just got the above 30,000 Yen warning message from SB.
But I was for a week roaming in Europe, might be related to this.
Roaming in Europe would do it alright. My coworker just got his 70,000 yen roaming fee for data usage.
My last few bills have been fine. Packet use in the range of 20,000 yen fully discounted and the new flat rate 5700 yen charge applied. I dont think there will be a problem. I was using the 10,000 yen flat rate package for 2 years prior to this on non softbank phones and it only went above when roaming.
So I got my bill and with the open connection I was charged as follows (approx, because I am too lazy at the moment to get the exact info, but it goes like this):
with the open connection, X-series phones will be charged at a max of 10700en or something like this.
to get the 4400 en one, you have to be within the above "walled garden" (basically a bull**** plan)
to get the 5900en one, you have to be using an iphone.
I am going to try and set my diamond up with the iphone settings.
Also, I find it bull**** that I am being charged as a X04HT user when I don't even have an x04ht.

Oh, roaming fees aren't charged by softbank initially. The provider your bud was roaming on has each kB or packet charged to softbank. Softbank then in turn charges your bud.

Also, I find it bull**** that I am being charged as a X04HT user when I don't even have an x04ht.
