stock nook 1.2 question - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does the new Stock update (1.2) allow for apps other than the ones B&N offers to be installed. Maybe like the ones in Android Market, Dropbox backups and Amazon App Market? Or are you stuck with what they have?
Thanks in advance.

From what I see so far with MINE, and the questions I've seen asked, unless you ROOT IT and install custom ROM it's "B&N approved apps" only. So, no "kindle app" unless it's rooted...

[Q] Noob needs advice. Reflash original ROM?

I have a rooted EVO 4G that I rooted with Unrevoked after I got the OTA update to FroYo. I removed a bunch of apps with Titanium that in hindsight I probably should have just froze, as I can't manually install any updates without getting an error message. I believe this is due to the update trying to install to a missing app. If I reinstall the original ROM, is there any way to save the paid apps I have on the phone? Suggestions?
you could with titanium, just hit the apps then backup.

If you want to download the original rom and still remain rooted, download the Stock ODEXED 3.70 rom from the link below and flash it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
Make sure you go into recovery, wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu except your SD card and then flash the rom. Afterwards, be patient during the initial boot. When you've booted into your homescreen and signed in with your Google credentials, start the Market app. Your paid apps should be listed under the MY APPS tab.
After you get your device exactly how you want it, reboot into recovery and make a nandroid backup. Get used to doing that each time you make a change to your device. Doing so will allow you to return your device to exactly how it was before the changes were made in case you don't like the changes. All of your apps will be intact as well as your homescreens.

your paid apps, if downloaded from the market, will always show in the market, and you can redownload them from any new rom you flash. they are attached to your google account.
you can use any of multiple backup methods if you want (titanium is my fav too), but your paid apps will always show in the market.
ROM won't flash.
Says to switch to edify scripting? What now?
I think that has something to do with the version of recovery u are using.... Try amon ra's beta test version for recovery or if you are more comfortable with clockwork use version 3.0.0. They both work

Old packages are not compatible with the newest version of Clockwork Mod Recovery (3.0+) so you need to downgrade to a 2.x release, which is simple to do via Rom Manager. Or you can find a newer package to use instead. I would suggest going with the 2.x version of CWM Recovery.
Or... you can just grab the latest PC36IMG.zip and throw that on the root of your SD card, then reboot to bootloader by holding volume down while powering on. That'll set everything back to the way it came. Make sure you grab the right PC36IMG.zip that you need before flashing...
Update
Well, now I really get a chance to show my ignorance. When I got to the point that I was getting error message, I panicked as I needed the phone at work the next day. I went with the "reboot now" option in recovery mode not knowing what else to do. The phone rebooted with FroYo installed and still rooted. All the downloaded apps were gone.
One of the main worries I had was I didn't know if I could get out of recovery mode after the wipe without having flashed a new ROM. It appears I was able to.
Also, is there any way to load files to the SD card if I get hung up like again?
I guess the advice I most needed is to download the older version of CWM into ROM Manager, and make a backup immediately, and also once I get all apps reloaded and have the phone tweaked to my liking?
The first thing you should do is boot into recovery and make a nand backup. If you are just learning probably use rom manager and get the paid version. Once you have a backup you should not have any worries. You should be able to access your SD card from recovery.

[Q] general questions about kindle fire utility

so, i finally got the kindle fire utility to work, but now i've got some very nubish questions...
so, right now, i have twrp installed, android market, and go launcher ex. however, i do not believe that I have permanent root, at least when i check with the utility it says i don't.
so, here's some questions.
I am still running on the stock os correct, so the web browser is still the same, and everything is still running through kindle fire's stock os?
what exactly is twrp? is it essentially a boot manager of sorts?
how do i return my kindle to stock factory settings (original os, no root, etc.)?
what is CM7? is that an entire os, or just a launcher?
in nutshell, my question is this: i used kindle fire utility (v. 7 btw) to install twrp, android market, and go launcher ex, what exactly does that mean to me?
thanks for your patience and help!
Well I just got my fire today myself but I can tell u that cm7 is a custom android and the original amazon stuff will be deleted if u install it. I have cm7on my phone ...
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
If I were to install cm7, is it more or less fully functional? Does it have features to make up for menu, back, etc. Buttons? How do I remove it and go back to stock amazon os?

[Q] ROM Manager On Market Place

Purchased ROM Manager on Market Place. I also Downloaded Acer Recovery. I am unsure if ROM Manager works for the A500 since its requests what hardware you are using and A500 is not on there. Is there a selection that is good for the A500? Also will or does Acer Recovery do the same thing and baically just spent a few bucks donating to something that will or currently does not work for the A500? Thanks!
Bill....
Rom manager is not supported on the a500/501. If you have an android phone you can use it there. Acer recovery installer is free and works.
Okay...I thought so..Thanks Much!! Maybe in future it will be....

Unfortunately, RomManager is designed for Phones (gingerbread and such). Will it run on HC? Well yes. But do not use it.
JRummys Toolbox also works on HC, and some of the features work on HC, but I would never use it to flash CWM or a Rom. But it has it's good points. Especially if you do not know the android system well.
Stay away from apps that were designed for phones. Different OS and different requirements. Even though they install.
Thanks Much... I have already downloaded Acer Recovery from Market and did the backups from there after using Timmy's method to root. And have also backed up to USB, and Cloud via Titanium Backup before progressing any further. Acer looks good and does bootup into ClockworkMod...

Titanium Backup, technically, that's a gingerbread app for phones. I would be careful with it, if I were you.
Have you noticed, when Rom manger said it updated your Recovery (on phones) it really didn't? Same version. A bug they don't wish to fix or discuss.
On my Rom, if a user mentioned TB, I would say to go complain on a Gingerbread forum.
TB has joined the league with RomManager. Both old and behind the times. And they should both be put out to pasture.
My 2 cents worth.
Interesting since I have read here and other A500 forums is to look for the ClockworkBackup on the Android Market. If you search for it there it brings up ROM Manager along with Acer Backup. When I downloaded ROM Manager and saw it ask for various devices none of which is an Acer 500, I downloaded the Acer Recovery. Never went very far into ROM Manager. Did everything from Timmy's method and then ran the Acer Recovery solely. As far as TB, again read on forums. But in any case I have done a couple of backups using Acer and placed them in USB Stick and External SD for safekeeping. Learning a lot from all this and exercising as much caution as possible to get the most learning out of it. Many Thanks!!

[SOLVED] **6.3 Can't run Market/Google Play**

Hey everyone,
Since rooting my Kindle (v 6.3), I was hoping I could be all fancy and have the Android Market - or Google Play if you will - but it seems my Fire doesn't agree with this. I've tried downloading and installing two separate versions of the Market - each launched but then came back with a force close error.
I've tried running the processes in KFU a few times but nothing seems to have changed.
Anyone have any ideas on how I would go abouts getting get working?
Thanks a lot in advance

Same here... you're not alone.
In fact, I've been having all kinds of issues this morning. I've even tried flashing other roms to see if I can get Gapps there, but Hellfire didn't have Market. No idea why... I'm flashing the stock update.zip right now. I'm just going to wait this one out.
You can't just install the market apk... there's other things that are needed for it to work.. just Google gapps.zip and flash them in recovery... and Hellfire rom dose have market you have to follow thee directions in the OP

I had the same problem. This is how I fixed it.
Follow these instructions given by ndpete. Follow the first set of steps then use option 2.
Remember to give ndpete a thumbs up.
That works, or you can just root, mount rw, add the googleservicesframework and vending apk 's to /system/app, mount ro, and reboot. Then run market in go launcher and on the second or third run it will update to google play and you're set.
I too am having a seemingly impossible time getting Android Market (Play) to work. I'm kind of a newb so don't totally understand the directions in this thread.
KFU 0.9.5 was supposed to add the market, but it didn't in my case. In fact, it didn't put the Superuser utility on my Fire either, although all other steps seemed to work fine so I assume I am rooted.
Any help is appreciated.
Flash MoDaCo Gr8. Its the stock 6.3 ROM rooted and tweaked with GApps preloaded. I've been running it for a few days now and it works flawlessly. It still uses the Amazon launcher, and you can still do prime videos with OTA rootkeeper. Look in the dev thread.

Fix
Going off of what other's said here:
Great big thanks to Vashypooh for helping me out on IRC, and a giant thanks (though I can't find the buttom for it) to ChodaBoyUSA's post on "6th April 2012, 05:49 PM".
Was trying to get Play on my wife's new Kindle and couldn't get it to recognise. Deleting the drivers and reinstalling (like ChodaBoyUSA states) was the trick. From there I still had some issues with installing the Gapps, and a good friend of mine (don't think he's on here) pointed me to this:
Unfortunately, I can't post URLs yet, so just google for this package.
"gapps-ics- 20120317-signed.zip"
Using the delete drivers trick, and this package worked. Up and running now.
Thanks so much, ndpete's solution totally worked! I'd give him and his posts a thumbs up if I could but I dunno how, so thanks!

[Q] Nook stock firmware 1.4.3?

Just read there is a new update for stock Nooks... basically gives more comic-reading options.
I currently have a rooted Nook color and don't really see any real reason to want the latest Nook update, but did want to ask: What would happen if i did update? Would I need to root again afterwards?
I know there's guides on previous versions of Nook, but was wondering if anyone had experience yet w/ the latest update.
I just downloaded it to look at it. It is a complete reflash of your ROM. So my guess is it will undo root. And this from B&N:
The NOOK Color Ver1.4.3 update contains new features and enhancements, including:
• Zoom view in comics and graphic novels
• 2-Page mode in landscape for viewing PagePerfect™ and PDF documents
• Other minor system enhancements

Thanks for the reply, very helpful!
Mine just automatically updated to 1.4.3. When I boot up it asks if I want to go to the normal home or the rooted home. I can go to the rooted home and my apps are there but I can't launch Google Play. Also, if I select the N button and then Home it just goes back to the default Nook home and I can't switch back to the rooted home. I have to restart the Nook to get back.
I'm going to try nooting it again to see if that corrects the issue.

I'm in the same state. One of my two Nook Colors auto-updated to 1.4.3 and I'm having the exact same symptoms. The other hasn't yet updated and still works fine. Please share your results
Update:
I used clockworkmod 3.2.0.1 and manualnooter 5.02.19. I reinstalled manualnooter without wiping the Nook and I am back in business on both of them

Including the google app marketplace? Super cool - the market (and gapps in general) require some things to be in /system to hook into to handshake with the Google servers.
I threw together a super minimal "install su and busybox" rooting tool that lets all of my apps run as I prefer but doesn't include the Market. Nice to know I'll be able to get the Market back as soon as I like.

This is why you're supposed to disable OTA updates when you Root a Device. Otherwise your device will update without your permission or foreknowledge. Usually it'll reset everything in System so you'll loose things like Root and Gapps.
Personally I just run CM9 off my 16gb class 10 SDcard. No OTAs to worry about and I get pure Android, all without modifying any of the Nook's Internal Memory.

I tried this and I cannot access the market. I had a stock unrooted 1.4.2 and then rooted using mn 5.02.19 on CWM 3.2.0.1
My device is rooted but the Market will not download apps. I have followed the guides to clearing the Vending.apk cache and Google Framework Services here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494901 but Market is not updating and I cannot install apps.
Even after flashing the two files here: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com...tock/m-p/1356004/message-uid/1356004#U1356004 and then re-flashing MN 5.02.19 I just have root.
Currently I have the standard/stock build.prop. I can push files to /system/app and /data/app but that is getting old. And so far no combination of checking or unchecking the NookTools toolbox is letting me install apps via Market.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have downloaded the update twice from B&N and copied it to the sd card root. Keep getting a message when I try to install the update, using your instructions, that it can't open the archive (bad).
I am trying your method because I can't get the Nook to update normally. I even followed the default NookColor reset instructions then tried to install the update. The update would never even start. Currently sitting at 1.3.0. So I decided to try this CW mod route. More problems...
This update process is getting so frustrating...... I must assume at this point that the archive is bad again. Tried using both IE and Firefox (heard FF causes problems). The CW boot process worked fine so that's not it.
Not sure what more I can do.

You can't edit the zip with archive software. You must entirely extract it, then edit the files, then rezip and re-sign the zip.
To save you the effort, I made a version of 1.4.3 that is CWM flashable and posted it. See my tips thread linked in my signature. See item A12.
