Hey, I have a rooted a500 and i just installed vtl launcher. I turned off the tablet and when i turned it back on it won't get past the android boot animation. I can still plug the usb in to my computer and view files. I have attempted to run the update.zip without any success.
I could use a little assistants.
I no longer have an acer a500, however, I believe the VTL launcher is what caused the same problem on my acer. I ended up exchanging it for the xoom since I was still on the 14 day trade in through Bestbuy. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did and someone here can assist with a fix.
This happened to me - twice. (Yes, I am an idiot).
First time, I left the device charging over night while off and with the sd card removed. The next morning I rebooted it and left it, and it eventually rebooted. (It would play notifications for emails I had received during the night, which was a good sign). I did a factory reset and everything was fine.
Second time, I installed the Acer drivers on my computer and connected it up via adb. It could read the sd card fine. I played around with some adb commands - I tried to uninstall the app via adb, but I couldn't access my /data/apps folder ("permission denied").
I can't remember exactly what I typed, but it might have been "remount" or something, and suddenly it booted up. I just uninstalled VTL Launcher, and all is well.
Sorry I couldn't be more specific on how I did it, I honestly can't remember.

WARNING This is a long post describing various events of my G1 and things I was going through, so Im basically doing a dump of my thoughts and possible reasonings to put everything I can report, case it is a ROM, Hardware, or Software flaw somewhere or just user error. But since this forum is about feedback for devs or rom providers =)
Ok I dont know where to begin with this post. Last night my G1 needed a wipe. Why? Cause all it did was reboot over and over not getting past 1st home screen, then finally android screen. What happened before this? All I have of the things going on during that time frame was this:
(Now before the below stuff, earlier that day, Quest Live glitched on me, and when I was at the home screen, I tried to scroll left and right and it got stuck half way, which WORRIED me since I thought the touch screen was messed up. To my luck after a reboot and iso alcohol rub down on screen, it was fixed. Tho only after I unplugged it from the car charger (Which seems to really make the G1 % battery jump in record speed.. glicth?) Or Power Manager issues? Tho this wasnt the updated one, so the new one may have fixed the issues the dev said power manager was causing.
I plugged in the usb to a ubuntu running PC. To charge it, thus triggering Power Manager. Same time, I was trying to install SnapPhoto, which it downloaded, but didnt install, I was also noticing abit of lag, So I ran task manager to turn off some apps running in background, Camera, Gallery, Gaming Buzz Widget, Weather app Widget, Calender. (Then as I rem.. I tried to update AdFree when the new version came out.. it didnt install but same time when I tried to load it, it just came up black.. sign of a bigger issue maybe?)
After that of course couple of them came back. Then I tried to change the volume using the side button, It didnt respond, The on screen worked fine tho. So I decided ok, time to reboot fresh on the phone. Rebooted, Then it loaded to home screen before radio signal, then rebooted. After getting tired of not booting, (I had unplugged it from the USB btw which at 1st kept the charging light on before I rebooted it. ) I pulled the battery out. Which MAYBE I pulled it out at the wrong time during the android screen. Cause after that and I put it back in, all it did was goto the G1, then Android cycling screen, but no longer went to the home screen to try to load. Then was too late for this trick, but the Safe mode attempt. Which MAY have worked when it made it to the home screen, but once it was on Android only, safe mode didnt load at all. Just endless stuck on Android. So I had to wipe 1st then I reapplied the JF 1.51 update.zip to fix it and get the G1 to turn on again and boot.
Advice tip: If you can still boot to the home screen "somewhat" next time it cycles, try holding "Menu" in to have the G1 bypass any apps and load into safe mode, which may allow you to uninstall or fix whatever the issue is.
To my surprise. The Apps when the G1 started installing again went to the SD card. (I do not use apps2sd, Only Lucids orig) Now thats when I noticed more hell.. I went to the market to look at "My Downloads" and WHAM, the 10 apps it auto downloaded (Which I guess was a sync) are the only ones in the My Download section.. nothing from my past downloads.. Which is 110 more apps.
Advice tip: Use Atrackdog to "Export" your database to a text file and keep that on your PC. This way if ANYTHING happens, you least know which apps to look for.
Advice Tip: Upon reflection I probably should have made a nandroid backup after 1.51 was smooth. So if you havent, Id suggest looking at it) I know I will once Im set back up.
So now I am left with a interesting ponder. I msged Lucid to see if his scripts would allow me to use my 2GB which had my 1.51 data on it and somehow relink it to the G1 and have everything restored, then recopy to the 4GB which is my current one. But chances are I need to 1 by 1 install again. (Anyone know how you get apps back that arent on the market anymore? Extract from the SD card maybe?)
Anyways now I am wondering, If you install too much to the G1, will it in the end cause a problem? Im not a dev so I dont know how that all works with the ROM builds. But that wouldnt be good news if you have 129 apps, things could start messing up. (Tho not sure if that was a cause for any of the above)
Another thing I learned, if you have a GOOD screen protector on the G1 (Not the one it came with) and it smears up, or gets smudgy it seems it may interfere with the response of the touch screen. Ive notice if the screen thinks its being pressed in, a app could hang, lock up or choke the G1 to where it fixes itself by doing a reboot. Now that sounds odd that the G1 is sensitive to smudges or oil from your hands (If you had a humid hot day). Anyways fixed that with iso rubbing alcohol and a soft wipe cloth. Then rebooted.
Now my next task is to 1: Find out if my Cache since the wipe is running on the SD still, or if its on Internal. The app "Move Cache" I hear could do that, but I heard it messes up market, maps etc.. so not what I wanna do atm. Then I just gotta see if I can restore apps from SD using a app or terminal, which I am studying now, but just wanna end this post for now.
Will post more as I get around to it. Maybe I can restore the market cache manually.
do you still experiencing the touch screen error problem after all the steps you have taken? because i have the same problem. sometimes when i use touch screen to switch screens, the screen get stuck in the middle and shaking. i also cannot select anything correctly by touching. and i've read from various forums that this has something to do with the charger / charging process. i think that my problem occured because i charged using usb cable to my computer. because i never done that before (i usually charge my phone using a wall charger) and when i did, the problem happened.
How I fixed it? I turned off the G1, used rubbing alcohol with a tissue to gently wipe the screen off and clean it. Then turned back on and it was fine.
I had been playing with it, trying to put an android system on it. When I was done, I flashed some other ROM onto it, not sure what...I recall getting frustrated with it when I tossed it into the drawer. Well, now I am wanting to set it up to simply run Slacker Radio and some other streaming media. I don't need it as a phone, just use it as a cheap media player.
So I dig it out, charge it, boot it mess with it for a minute and it reboots. Then I let it reboot and just looked at it. After a few minutes, it reboots....endless cycle. So I did a hard reset. It boots up to where I align the screen and then it goes to the today page, and immediately goes into some automatic customization thing....after which it reboots and reboots...
Okay, fine, I'll flash a new ROM (I found a light one here that has no carrier...perfect). At my current location all I have is a Windows 7 x64 laptop and I cannot get a driver anywhere that I've looked that will work. I can get the phone into bootloader mode, but that of course does me no good if the laptop won't recognize it. I've searched the forums as well as the web, and most of the Wiki for this phone is broke. I'm remembering perhaps why it ended up in a drawer.
Any ideas? Thanks.
Calis
I always flash using the micro sd card. Works great!
can you virtualize xp? then you should be able to see it in bootloader
There are some threads indicating this is a problem after the leaked update. I did the official OTA update today and immediately ran into the issue. After doing a factory data reset to make sure i cleared any possible cob webs out the issue was still there. Tablet runs fine while in use, as soon as it goes to sleep it reboots.
I removed the sd card that was installed and the problem went away. Wondering if anyone can confirm......

I had the issue initially with the leaked 3.1. I factory reset, wiped caches, and it seemed to go away. About 30 minutes ago, it happened again. BTW, I am on PRIMORDIAL.
Questions for you:
Was the tablet docked at the time (mine was each time)?
Your SD card...are you talking about the miniSD or SD in the dock (I had a mini in the tablet, and SD in the dock)?
What is the brand of the SD card (I have a 16 GB AData micro, and a Patriot Class 6 SD in dock).http://forum.xda-developers.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=14345447
Hopefully we can nail this down. Didn't see the issue at all in 3 weeks on 3.01 (Prime), FWIW.

I have the same issue after installing the "Leaked 3.1 update". It was fine without docking to keyboard dock. I used the tablet itself for one whole day without any reboot. The last few days I noticed that it automatically reboot while in sleep mode as well (while docked to keyboard dock). It happened three to four times yesterday and three times today...
I tried to downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0.1 again this morning (using the official 3.0.1 from Asus website). After downgrading I was getting constant "Force Close" error messages. My tablet was totally useless at that point. I was not able to go into "Recovery Mode" to do a data wipe or factory reset. Only way to recover from this was install the "Leaked 3.1 update" again. I am still having automatic reboot issue with this Leaked 3.1 update. I did not do any cache wipe or factory reset yet. I do not want to reinstall and recofigure all of my apps and emails again...

I have had the same issue since I installed 3.1 leaked. Symptoms same as above, whereas my tabelt only reboots while docked and after it goes to sleep. I just removed both my external cards to see if that changes anything. I have a Sandisk mircosd HC 16gb in the tab and a Centon SDHC 16gb in the docking station. Hopefully we can nail this down.
Please let us know if you removed your micro of SD in docking station that solved the issue.
Thanks!
After my official OTA update I have noticed my tablet reboot itself in sleep mode at least three times, and those are the times that I saw. Of note, it WAS NOT docked into the keyboard when it rebooted two of the times, and it might have been docked one of the times. Also, I don't have an SD card installed on mine. I'll let you know if the problem persists.
update! I have removed my sdcard from my keyboard dock and so far, no reboots while docked. Please post if this has solved anyone else's reboots.
Thanks!

So, as I suspected. I too have not had the issue since removing my SD card from the dock 2 days ago. I am 100% convinced at this point that the culprit is here, whether it is a bug in 3.1, compatibility with my brand of SD card, or both.
I did not see reboot after I removed my sd card from my keyboard dock... but I found something suspicious: When my TF is docked to keyboard dock, I will put it to sleep... after few minutes of in-activity, when I tried to wake up the TF... It would not respond. About 30 seconds to 1 minutes later, I will see an Asus logo come up and it goes into the lock screen. I checked my system "up time", it still shows over 20 hours of up time... Really strange... I thought that whenever you see the Asus logo on your screen it means it's booting up or something... Have anyone else seen this happen before? I never seen this happen in android 3.0.1.

Never mind... My TF rebooted three times today while docked on the keyboard dock... This is when I already removed the external SD card on my dock...
I'm wondering if using the custom rom will resolve this issue?
I noticed that there are two ramdump files create today after my TF randomly reboot. I opened up the .log files in windows and noticed the following error messages:
<0>[102067.945373] Internal error: Oops: 817 [#1] PREEMPT SMP
<0>[102067.945409] last sysfs file: /sys/devices/platform/tegra-i2c.1/i2c-2/2-0019/power_supply/dock_battery/status
I have no idea what this means...
Mike
This is exactly why I always wait a couple months before upgrading. Let all you guinea pigs do everything for me first.
What the hell is wrong with these mega companies? Don't they test their own freakin' devices? It's really simple. Before you release an update, test it on your devices first in different situations. It's like asus didn't even bother to do test runs before they released this update.
Unrooted TF here. I always have it docked. Installed the official upgrade as soon as it was available. Played on the tablet for a while, ran a speed test and closed the lid. We've been busy the last couple of days, but after reading about the reboot prob, I opened the tablet every so often to see if I was having the same problem. It was always at the speedtest app, and I simply closed the lid. I'm assuming it never rebooted if it was always at the speedtest app.
Today, I opened the lid, still at the speedtest. I hit the home key, forgot what I did, but it rebooted.
My long-winded point is, does the reboot only happen at the Home screen? I find it odd that for several days this was fine sitting with an app open.
I have a unrooted TF and i just updated on Saturday. I know of 1 reboot (docked w/ sd micro card in) but I also saw a 20% battery drop while closed.
Same issue here
Unrooted Leaked 3.1
MicroSD 32GB Sandisk Class 6
SD In Dock 32GB Class 6 Microcenter Brand
Loaded apps after a hard reset post 3.1, maybe 20 or so apps installed, still observed
the reboot issue, I could be sitting in pandora or slacker and it would reboot.
It would also reboot just sitting at the home screen.
I have hard reset again from the boot loader and have not installed anything, only have gmail configured.
I have removed both flash cards and I will see what happens.
I like 3.1 but this is a PITA.

I posted this in the Atrix Development forum under Gingerblur since that's what's currently on it, but it may just be a general Android issue so I'm reposting it here as well just in case:
OK I had something weird happen to my gf's phone yesterday. I don't know if this is Gingerblur related, but that's what's on it so I'm putting it here.
AT&T Atrix w/ Gingerblur 4.0 (Just haven't got around to going to 4.5)
So I put Gingerblur on it 2-3 months ago and it's been working great for her. So yesterday I was with her and we were going to install this market app (I can't remember what it was), but she hit Install on the market app, it changed to the OK button, but when she clicked OK, the button just flashed and just sat there and did nothing. i found that odd. So I had her see if she could sideload an app (not the same one) -so I downloaded it to the phone and clicked it to install it. I accepted it and it just said "Installing...." forever. So I told her OK the phone got out of whack or something let's just reboot it.
So we reboot it, and she complains that a lot of her apps show the default android icon for them (instead of their respective icon pics) and she can't run them. From what we noticed, these were all the apps that were moved with app2sd. Also, nothing will install from the market - you can get there, but you get the same symptoms as above. You can click "Install" on the app but when you click "OK" it doesn't do anything.
Under Settings/Manage Applications it shows all her apps installed so the phone still thinks all the apps are there. So I tell her to pick an app that she doesn't really care about and Uninstall it. She said that works, but trying to install it through the Market fails.
So she's freaking out. I tell her to let me at least back up what I can off the phone. So I try plugging the phone into my computer with the USB. I can't get the phone to be seen at all by the computer. I put the USB into Mass Storage mode/Nothing/etc, and even turn off/on USB Debugging - I just can't get this thing to be seen. So now I'm starting to worry.
We have an external SD card in the phone so I was able to start copying what I could under Setting/Files over to the SDcard.
Now all I'm thinking about is getting this phone working again so I'm starting to read how to recover the phone back to stock using this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
So I'm able to get it into the recovery state. So as I'm downloading the SBF, I notice it says to remove the SIM card too. So I shut it down, and remove the SIM. I boot up the phone regularly and I notice everything is working now as it should (minus the phone since the SIM is out), but all apps are there and working correctly and the market works as it should.
So immediately I nab Titanium Backup from the market and start backing things up. I tell her to go through the list and start backing up what she thought was important. So I'm thinking this thing fixed itself, but when I put the SIM card back in, we're back to the broken state again.
So.. does anyone know what's going on here? It seems like the phone doesn't like her SIM card anymore, but she can still make calls with it aside from the rest of the phone issues with it in.
If we need to take this back to stock, I will - especially now that I was able to back things up with TB.
Hi guys,
Thanks for all the support and guides posted here, they've been very useful in helping me getting my Kindle rooted and getting rid of the horrible carousel, however I'm having a bizarre problem.
If I leave my Kindle plugged into my computer for a prolonged period of time (I.E to charge it) It seems to reset all the hardwork I've done. Nova launcher completely vanishes from the device as do a few gapps and the stock launcher returns with Carousel etc. I've also made a few edits to the LCD density within the build.prop file and this also seems to revert to it's default settings. Strangely, any apps I've downloaded from the Google app store are still there.
Once these things happen I also seem to lose the ability to copy or edit any files at root. I can view everything but I have to re-root my Kindle in order to make edits or move files to the system/apps folder.
Has anyone else experienced this or know what the issue might be? My Kindle is connected to WiFi 90% of the time and nothing like this happens, but if I leave it plugged into my computer for 30 minutes or more everything resets.
Help? Suggestions?

cdbailey,
I am sorry for the delayed response, we had to go out to an emergency call and got
back an hour ago. Sounds like Amazon sent a software update to your Kindle. Has it
happened more than once? If not, I would mark it up to a Software Update. The
Service is called OTA (Over The Air) Update Service. Look in the Device > About,
what is your software version? If this is not possible you need to send it back to
Amazon for replacement. Remove Google Play before sending it in to Amazon.
This is NOT normal.
Hey that's no problem at all, it was thanks to the help.of your guides that I've been able to get my head around all of this.
The first time it happened my initial thought was, like you said, that my device had received a software upgrade. Unfortunately this has happened a total of three times and each time I've followed my daily routine of coming in from work, plugging my USB from the Kindle into my computer, going back to it a couple of hours later and finding it has all reset.
I don't know if it can be related at all but I have been using a slightly older version of Nova launcher as opposed to GOLauncher like your guide suggests.
Last night after finding it reset for the third time I decided that if so many people were having luck with GOLauncher then I'd try the same. As an experiment I left my Kindle connected to the computer much of last night and so far, so good.
I'll update here if it does happen to reset but I'm still not sure what caused it. Thanks again for the reply.
Okay... literally seconds after my last post I went to check my Kindle for the software version to find it had reset again. This time it wasn't connected to my computer and my software version is currently 7.2.3
Could editing the build.prop file be forcing my Kindle to update itself as it doesn't recognize the contents to be correct?
I don"t recommend editing the build.prop yet till you can back up the device or this may happen

cdbailey,
Although we do not recommend editing the build.prop there is nothing that would
perform an inventory forcing an update. You can edit just about everything in
the Kindle and it would not send a signal to be updated. I suspect the OTA
Inventory Service database is sour, not recognizing you current software
version, thus looping the update. We just posted a new tutorial that
would shutdown these services. Please perform these steps to disable
the update service (Note: You may manually execute the update):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086450
This will be an interesting experiment to see if it clears up your looping
update service.
