Nexus S is no longer recongized by PC - Nexus S General

My nexus S is no longer recognized as usb storage. It's not being recognized at all by my pc. The "turn to usb storage" option never comes up on the phone. The phone charges fine though! Even through the computer it reads as charging but usb never comes up. Now I can't move things between the phone and computer.
I bought this from Negri and am using it on ATT. Since this is an import phone from Canada and I'm just outside of Negri's weird 25 day return policy, am i screwed? Or is there a way I can get it to recognize again?

Buy a nice micro usb cord. The one Samsung packs in is crap.

Try it on a different computer?

Had this problem and I resolved it by plugging it into a USB 2.0 port. I also downloaded the Android SDK and the USB drivers.

SAME PROBLEM, after manually installing 2.3.4(Which I have already posted about.)Tried both my work PC(Win XP) and my home notebook (Win 7 Prof. x64 bit) and neither work. Tried the SDK and updating the drivers, didn't work(Could you list the steps?) Thought about rooting, unlocking bootloader, & CWM but all require USB connectivity. Been posting all week but no one seems to have any answers (or just doesn't respond). Maybe the more this problem keeps coming up the more people will start discussing fixes.

had this problem before but luckily it was the cable

Driver Installation Issues

I am trying to install the Samsung Intercept (Virgin Mobile) on my Windows 7 netbook. I could never connect the device before to either WinXP or Win7. I recently factory reset my phone and after installing the drivers on WinXP, the phone showed that it was connected. I mounted the SD card to the computer and it never showed the drive. I unmounted and disconnected and since then it never connected. I keep getting that it's not recognized.
On my Win7 computer, I installed the drivers (had to force Windows to find the driver). Now the computer senses that it's connected, but it says "the device cannot be started". So I'm thinking that my P.O.S. phone can't figure out wtf USB mode is. It showed it once and that's it.
I've tried probably 3 or 4 different drivers and now I can't figure out how to just start clean. I don't even think I need to because the computer driver installed fine (It says Samsung USB Android whatever when it's connected). I tried with USB debugging on and off.
I even tried to make a virtual Windows XP to try it on a fresh install, but VM won't take unknown USB devices.
I uninstalled all my drivers, even the USB hub drivers, rebooted after the uninstall. No luck.
Before I reinstalled the hub I tried to force XP to the drivers (different ones not the same driver over and over) and now its saying "the file does not contain any information about this device". WTF?!
I'm so confused with this stupid driver that I can't take it anymore. I'm now considering reformatting my computer, but it's not worth it just to root a phone. I'd rather put up with my phone needing a battery pull at least once a day than to lose all my files.

I had the same issue too.
Have you tried using another USB cable? If you're using the cable that came with the phone it wont work (well sometimes). What you can do is find or buy another Micro USB cable for your intercept. You can buy one off amazon for less than $10. I brought mine from Best buy for $20. It works fantastically.

I was seriously considering another cable because I read in some other threads pretty much what you just told me, but I guess I was one of those "on the twelth time it finally connects" type of situations. I connected it last night and it worked. Just need to update my SDK stuff, make sure I have all my info for SuperOneClick, and cross my fingers lol!
Thank you for your advice. If it stops working I'm gettilng a new cable.
[EDIT] and it stopped working... I knew I should've just rooted when I had it connected, but I wanted to back my stuff up. Looks like I'm getting a new cable lol.

[EDIT] You were totally right! It's the cable. I got a Belkin for $15 at Target. I plugged it in and immediately Windows 7 Pro 32-bit detected the drivers, the handset, and installed it. Now time for rooting
I know it's been a couple of months, but I'm curious if you've had any other problems with connecting?
I was having the same problem and I had a few cables that I tried with no luck. I also tried my wife's Blackberry cable, which is a thicker cable that claims to be a "DATA" cable...no go.
I probably will just go buy the Belkin one you referred to if you've had no other problems.
Thanks!

I actually have had no problems (on my Win7 PC) since the install. As for my XP computer, I just gave up on trying to get it to work. Try completely uninstalling every instance of the Samsung programs (I went through my registry *dangerous*) and all things Android and reboot to a fresh power cycle (like with the phone) so Windows can update all its important files reguarding the driver removal. Then install and THEN plugin.
It literally randomly worked for me. I had the drivers installed properly, but the charging cord gave me "bad driver install". I didn't change a thing and plugged in wth the Belkin and was good to go.
Hope you can get it working! I know the anticipation of phone modding, and I love it! Lol!

Ditto, ditto and ditto! I have the same thing with my intercept, except I started on win7/64, could not get anything going. Then created an XP VM - over my dead body - no go.
Using the same cable, if I plug in my Captivate, everything comes up.
For you guys, when you bought a different cable, what did you buy? micro-to-micro USB? Or something else?
J
I usually use the cables that came with my HTC phones. Also I have better luck if I reboot the phone prior to connecting it to the PC.

Nexus 7 Not Showing Up In Device Manager

Let me start by stating that I have read through pages of various threads on here & haven't found an answer... Or at least I haven't found an answer in laymen's terms that I can understand. So, if/when offering help, please break it down for me a little. Thank you!!
I just purchased a Nexus 7. When I plug it in to my Windows 7 PC, nothing happens. It doesn't install any device drivers. It doesn't appear anywhere in my device manager. Nothing. After reading several posts, I downloaded drivers from Asus's site, but now I don't know how to install them. I came across this comment from "MrTrackZed" in another thread (one I can't yet post in):
"After you download the driver, unzip/extract its contents. Then you go to your device manager on your PC, and plug in your Nexus. You'll see it with a yellow exclamation point, right click it and select update driver. You can then select this driver manually. Also, if using Wug's root method, make sure you configure the fastboot driver as well. I don't have my PC with me, but I believe its step 6 in the driver install process. Its all very easy, sounds confusing, but its not. Good luck! "
I totally understand that, but what do I do if the device isn't even showing up in the device manager? I've plugged it in to 3 different computers (2 windows 7 & one Windows XP) and it does nothing on any of them. The device does show that it's charging, but nothing else. Please help. This is driving me nuts. Oh, and I've done all of this while having debugging on & off. Same results.
~Clint
U may just have a bad device! I have seen posts similar to this and after a device exchange they have no problems.
The fact that It doesn't register on three different computers means that or a bad cable.

When you plugin your phone, on your phone, you need to click USB Storage, did you do that?
Another thing to try is to enable Debuging on your phone, and install drivers, to check if device manager can detect it.
We have a package contains the right drivers for your device, you may want to download and try it. We have Nexus 7 users works fine.

I did as you suggested & installed both the PC client & downloaded the app from google play. Still nothing... The device works perfectly except for this one issue. It's making me crazy!
can you run this command to debug? (open a command window on Windows)
"c:\program files\vmlite\AndroidAppController\adb.exe" devices
what is the output message?
It just occured to me that some USB cable is charging only, this morning, I got such a cable, there is no USB device showing up in device manager with that USB cable, once I switched to another data cable, it works.
You may want to change to another usb cable to test.
Problem Identified
Okay, so after much research, I think the problem has been identified. The one thing that I've found in common with all the threads that discuss this problem is that we've all, at one point or another, used a USB car charger to charge our N7. I've found that most cheap USB chargers only put out at about 1 amp. The N7 is trying to pull 2 amps. This is causing the USB cable to overheat & damage the USB connector on the N7. Unfortunately, once the damage is done, it's done. Fortunately for me, I purchased my N7 at a local retailer that had a 30 day return policy & they gave me a new N7. It works great & I've ordered a 2.1 amp USB car charger to prevent this from happening in the future.

Thank you for the reply, but I am using the OEM N7 USB cable. Plus, I used 3 other cables to no avail. See my previous comment though. I've identified the error.
Sorry for the bump, but are you saying that (under)charging at 1A essentially breaks the N7? Wow. You'd think it would break if you'd feed it 5A or so, not at less than 2!
I think I'm having the same issue now. I can charge, but no debugging for me since my computer doesn't even notice a USB device. Must have happened in my car once when I was trying to charge my phone and my N7 at the same time. (Since then I can't charge any phone at all in the car using that charger.) Let's see if I can find the warranty slip.

If you have an unlocked bootloader use this tool to lock it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.segv11.bootunlocker
To unroot use the permanent unroot feature in SuperSU.
Order is important since the Bootloader tool requires root.

thanks. i installed the android sdk and java jdk but still have the problem. i believe the problem is with the phone 100%
my nexus always shows that it's charging on AC whenever plugged in. doesn't matter if it even is to AC or USB. the phone shows up as unrecognized device with a bang in the USB section of the device manager. on some computers it doesn't even show up.
i tried on my macbook pro and it doesn't even show up there but in every case, the phone charges.
wondering if there's a switch or toggle somewhere that will turn it on and get it working
i'm going to install a windows xp VM as a last ditch resort and see if it at least shows up there.

Make sure your device is on MTP and try an other data cable which has no missing/broken data wires inside.

That is strange, it should work with the Windows Virtual Machine.
Maybe it is to do with the standalone machine using it in the same time.

Same problem here. USB is not recognized using my Nexus 4 ( it used to be recognized on two PCs, but no longer), but another Nexus 4 connects perfectly. I can only charge a USB rate on chargers that used to charge at ac rate. I've tried everything, and more than mentioned in this thread.

Hi guys,
Seems that I've got the same trouble. Got my N4 (stock ROM, 4.2.2) a couple of weeks ago and everything was ok - connection as MTP, connection for debug and so on. But yesterday I connected it to my PC and found that the device indicates charging but not USB connexion. So I've tried to reboot PC and N4, tried other cables and 2 other PCs (my with Win8, and those with Win7 and Linux Mint if matters). Other devices are ok (Huawei Honor, N7, Milestone2).
The phone just doesn't detect USB connection - in both MTP and PTP. Then I tried to plug in wall charger and connect back again to USB. AND IT WORKED! The phone detected the connection so I was able to mount it and detect with adb. I thought that the problem was solved but when I connected it next time - same ****. This time nothing helps (most likely that there wasn't any casual relationship between wall charger connection and temporary fix...)
What options I've got now? Try to root the device and look into syslog to detect if it's a software issue or disassemble the device and try to find any defects on USB port?
Thank you,
Alex

I got mine to work by using a 2 into 1 usb plug. The kind that comes with portable CD writers. Once I got it working I reflashed stock 422 and the problem is gone. Turns out it was a bad flash from the previous owner.

Thanks for advice. During this day it worked properly twice - the phone just started detecting connection. No obvious reasons for that... I got a new device with stock 422 from amazon and haven't flashed or event rooted it. How do you think, should I try to flash it with official 4.2.2? Now I can say that it's most likely a software issue.

Tried it out - the result is the same. Now I can not even unlock the bootloader to reflash 422... Btw I didn't managed to find a 2into1 cable but checked if the same trick would work with USB hub with external power - it works really better. The device can detect the connection almost all the times and I can see it listed in adb devices and as a mounted storage. Though in fastboot mode this doesn't help. Device remains unrecognized.

well if you're getting a connection to the computer but not in fastboot, your drivers might just need removal/reinstallation.
once you get it going, reflash the stock 4.2.2 from google and see how it goes.
if that doesn't work and you can get it going, get it replaced by Google.
if you can, try it on a mac.. they don't need the drivers installed. just run it all from terminal.
Okay, I've managed to track down the issue...
Once I got it available for fastboot I've unlocked bootloader and then flashed with Cyanogen. The problem remained but I could get dmesg output for plug-in event. I've managed to get logs for problematic case (doesn't detect USB data connexion) and for correct behavior case (when Android detects USB data connection).
No sense to put the whole log pieces here just a brief quotes.
For correct case:
Code:
Avail curr from USB = 500
For incorrect case:
Code:
Avail curr from USB = 1500
USB module firmware tells the system that it has detected data-connection and enabled low-power mode (500mA). In this case Android initiates mtp and adb:
Code:
<6>[62539.001178] adb_open
<6>[62539.001269] mtp_bind_config
<6>[62539.001422] adb_bind_config
And in problematic case USB module firmware incorrectly indicates for the OS that there are only power-connection (5V/ground). I cant say exactly where the issue is but there are only two options - bug in USB module firmware or physical fault of connection (pins, bus or whatever else). Anyway I've to replace USB module or just go with it and use adb over network (the matter is that sending the device back to Amazon seller from my country would cost me 1/3 of the purchase total so I consider that just unreasonable).
Thanks to LG - for my money I got not only a box with device but also whole lotta fun =)

Nexus 6p not detected by PC

I'm pretty stumped with this one so I'm throwing it out there to see if you lot have any ideas.
I have a Nexus 6p that can charge, however it is not recognized whatsoever by the computer. No notification sound when I plug it in (it just starts charging).
When in bootloader it says "connect usb data cable", and there are no adb devices found.
I tried reinstalling drivers a bunch of times to no avail, and tried on another computer.
Fairly confident, I ordered a new USB board. I've now swapped it out, and plugged it back in to the computer, and low and behold the issue is still the same.
I'm guessing there is something wrong on the motherboard. Any ideas? Did I miss something obvious?
EDIT: I've tried multiple cables, and usb ports. ADB works fine with my nexus 5x.
what OS are you running on your computer?
what version of android?
when you plug it in, do you get any options to choose from on the notification shade? (is USB debugging turned on in developer options?)
I am having the exact same issue. I am trying to back everything up before installing Nougat but I cant get the phone to be recognized by the PC. I get the pop up in the notification bar and can select from charging, MTP, PTP, etc, but I can not see anything on the computer. Absolutely nothing shows up in device manager.
I have tried reinstalling drivers and going through all steps on Wug's toolkit but nothing works. I can however connect to my wife's laptop with no issue, so it is not the phone. I installed all drivers and used my PC to root originally, so there has to be something that happened since February. Both PCs are running windows 10 and I tried my phone on both Pure Nexus 6.0.1 and an old stock 6.0.0 backup and have the exact same issue.
I have Googled around and cant really find any answers. I am pretty sure it is something in Windows that can likely be fixed with a reinstall, but that is something I really dont want/have time to do because I have a ton of programs and games setup on 3 seperate drives that would take quite a while to reinstall. I am really hoping someone has been able to solve this problem in the past.
Good luck. I will be steadily trying to get mine to work and I will post back if I make any progress at all. I will also be watching this thread to see if anyone has suggestions.
I just got mine working. What I ended up having to do was update the firmware for my Asmedia USB 3.1 controller. I did that and plugged my phone in and it worked perfectly. Look on your motherboard/PC manufacturer's website and see if there is any firmware or drivers that pertain to USB that can be updated. Good luck, I really hope you figure it out because I know it annoyed the hell out of me.

So it sounds like a driver issue. Have you tried reinstalling drivers? maybe try something like Wug's toolkit.

Pretty sure drivers are fine. I can ADB into other phones no problem. I have also tried on another computer and the issue is the same.
I have the exact same issue as OP. Everyone keeps saying it's a Windows driver issue, but how can it be when Windows doesn't even detect a USB device being plugged in?

I noticed something and wanted to see if you have the same issue. In the Battery settings menu, when you plug your phone into the USB port, does it say Charging over USB and then switch to Charging on AC 5 seconds later? My Nexus 4 always stays as Charging over USB so I think there is something to this.
Are you connecting via USB-C to USB A (USB 2.0)? Some older computers cannot handle it without a proper driver update. Try using a USB-C to micro USB adapter

I can understand why people will be quick to suggest that given that 9/10 cases are this issue. However as I already stated, I've tried multiple cables, ports, drivers, computers, phones. And other phones work fine, just not this 1 device. So as far as I'm concerned, there is almost certainly nothing wrong on the computer side.

I've tried my motherboards USB2.0, 3.0, and USB C port.
I primarily use my USBC->USBC cable without the need for any adapters. It works fine with my Nexus 5x. When I plug in my 6p, it starts charging, however windows does not even recognize anything has been connected.

Can you go into Settings - Battery and then plug in your USB cable. Does it say Charging over USB and does it switch to Charging on AC?

I don't have a working system boot atm, or a working recovery partition. I need to flash both. This is in no way connected to the major issue. The issue was around for a long while before I did a bad flash. Now I need to connect via bootloader to reflash recovery and install a working system; so I'm forced to address this problem now.

Good luck. I'm at the point where I need to send my device to Huawei. I hope the warranty can cover this bad USB issue.
Huawei wanted to charge me almost $300usd because I unlocked my bootloader.

Oh wow. Mine came with an unlocked bootloader. They didn't say anything about charging me $300. Geez, I hope this isn't the case.

Normally when you unlock your bootloader you void your warranty. It's the price we pay for custom romming etc.
Did you by any chance buy a second hand device? I've never heard of phones coming unlocked by default.

I bought it used-like new on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Huawei-Nexus-6P-unlocked-smartphone/dp/B015YCRYZM). Says it has a US Warranty.

:S good luck. If it's any consolation my warranty region is HK not USA. You might be ok.

6t won't connect to Windows 10 PC

I'm at a complete loss here guys, hate to even ask this. So I tried to connect my 6t to my Windows 10 PC and the PC won't even RECOGNIZE that anything was plugged in! No sound and not even an entry in device manager. I even went as far as to reinstall Windows 10 and no dice. I installed the One plus driver from here on XDA and they are unsigned drivers, so I disabled driver signature enforcement and the drivers are now on my PC, but with the PC not even noticing something was plugged in it's no use.
Some info.
Using the red USB C cable that came with the device.
Plugging it into a USB 3.0 port on my PC.
Installed the OnePlus driver with enforcement disabled.
More info? Let me know! I'm lost here.

Try a different cable. I come from the land of pixels where you'd be surprised by the amount of headaches cables have caused. If that's doesn't work I'd be stumped as well
You have to enable USB debugging and change USB configuration to transfer data..

I did both. Doesn't work for me :/ In Android pie, is there some setting to enable MTP other than developer options? I don't even get the heads up notification on my device. I'll try connecting it to a USB 2.0 port instead of 3.0 and see what that does.

Just ruling out all possibilities (have run into this myself on other phones) :
Have you tried another port on you PC?
FWIW,I'm using a cable from either an LG or Samsung & that's working for me.
The device is seen & I got the pop-up on the phone after toggling the associated USB options in Dev Options on the phone.
Was able to execute ADB commands for an Immersive Mode app & to use the no-root ADB Uninstall commands.
I just used my og pixel xl type c cable and it instantly installed the drivers and recognized the phone
Front ports of PC chassis sometimes give too little power so try an usb port on back. try with other pc as it might be problem with your pc

Alright, so I tried different ports on my PC both front and back, no usb input sound or anything. I'm wondering if the USB C cable that comes in the box of the 6t just isn't a data cable? I have developer options enabled, adb debugging, and have the default USB mode set to MTP. Nothing still. I wonder why. Have you tried connecting your 6t with the included cable? Just to rule out if it IS a data cable or not. Thanks!

Tried some ports on the back that are part of my motherboard, same issue. No sound and no entry in device manager. No notification on my 6t either. The phone CHARGES, but nothing more.

Could you try using your included cable and report back? Thanks in advance man!
Is there a possibility to try on another computer? Just to rule out that the problem isn't in the computer itself...
I've just factory reset my 6T and plugged it into a USB 2 port on the front of my PC, using the red cable that came with the phone, and it immediately recognised it. You clearly have an issue but we can rule out it being a general issue.
just checking. you say it charges, that was the default setting on mine after i enabled usb debugging. i opened notifications on my phone and the was a small one saying phone charging, when i clicked on it i got an options page for usb preferences and then switched to file transfer. works fine now.

are you in fastboot mode on the phone? are you just running the phone within osygenOS?
I'm going to say damaged cable.
Try any other device that you can plug it into. If it still doesn't work it's the cable. If you change cable and still a problem I'd RMA the device maybe faulty port on phone. Device is too new to be playing games like this. Get a new one.
I just connected my, to windows 10 laptop after seeing this post. No driver installed, red cable that came with phone, USB 3 Port in the laptop. Nothing was needed to do for it to be recognized. Worked just like that.
Albeit I enabled USB debugging in developer option beforehand and changed the option to file transfer.
Just wanted to show the settings
