Bad scrolling/performance when in portrait mode - Acer Iconia A500

Any one else noticed this?

I don't nomally use portrait but tried it on the google news site, it seemed to work fine. What do you mean by bad scrolling?
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk

It seems like the overshoot hysteris is less on thhe acer than on my smsung galaxy tab. Not sure if that's a hardware thing or a dif between honeycomb and froyo

Slow Text Entry?

Is is just me, or is the text entry kind of pathetic on the browser of the tab
any desktop site, like.. Facebook , or XDA, typing lags always a second, so the words and letters typed will show up after you actually type, its not smooth at all...
*laughs hard*
I think there might have been a few discussions about this. Yeah, it's an issue. Dolphin or Opera Mini will work better.
So I think I may have a fix for this. I was digging around in the keyboard settings, and noticed that the Tab ships with "Samsung Keyboard" as the default. I switched mine back to the stock Android keyboard, and it's much better. Of course there are a bunch of replacement keyboards you can use as well, but the stock honeycomb keyboard seems much more responsive than the Samsung one.
So far the Android keyboard, Swiftkey, and Swype keyboards haven't made anything better for me.
I've seen some people say disabling OpenGL in the debug settings helps, but they also say it has some other performance side effects. So... I guess I'll be using Opera Mini for a while.
The Bookmarks widget though makes it real easy to use the stock browser bookmarks (synced from my desktop Chrome browser) real easy with Opera though, so I like that.
ya so far swype is tne worst. But problem ive been having is if i type too fast the keyboard suddenly closes and im constantly having to reopen it.... Its fuggin annoying.
I've been using thumb keyboard and no lag. Its able to keep up with me
i really don't think its keyboard related
I'm using stock hc keyboard
Divineblue try doing a quick reply here on ur tab and you'll see the lag
Its fine in Google search and mobile sites but just des on desktop sites like facebook etc
lag disappears in opera mini but its a slow loading browser and I can tell decreases page quality, also can't get facebook desktop to load, no user agent option
so the hc browser really sucks then and ia behind this text lag
Is this lag a general problem with HC? Do you guys think that it will be fixed?
I got this tab on friday I love it so far but this text entry lag is driving me insane.

It's HC. My Acer had they same issues.

I use the thumb keyboard and stock browser. It lags like crazy, no different than using any other keyboard.
Has this been reported to Google?
Because of this issue alone, I postponed my purchase of any Android tablet
Web browsing accounts the most for my usage pattern. And I really hate any slow down for doing it.
See if this is fixed in the upcoming Android 3.2 (if it made to GTab) ... or hopefully ICS.
Is it at all lack of power from the Tegra or is it a glitch./-/
I bet on problem with Android Honeycomb.
It is really strange if Tegra does not have enough power on this!
We have a lot of Tegra phones and they don't have this issue. Sure, this is different OS, but that should show about "power".
Probably we need to wait for Android tablet Honeycomb that does not using Tegra.
And see if the problem still there.

lol its definitely not the tegra 2. Its honeycomb, this one is all google's fault. Kind of sad that google brags about their browser being the fastest than other browser and yet the honeycomb browser can't even handle text entry.
I get the same lag with the samsung keyboard attatchment i bought

well done on the post above, i voted
I put my comments in that thread too..
The laggy text in the browser is total fail

potrait in 3.2!

i just found that launcher in 3.2 is now as smooth s butter when running at potrait mode. browser speed is also increased slightly. great news to xoom owners
Yeap, in portrait is working really smooth now, I did not use the browser jet... hahahaha
Just one thing, when you change from portrait to landscape or otherwise it still takes some time to adapt, a few seconds but after that... it goes really smooth....
I did tried some mkv files, but they did not work fine for me... I have seen other users that tried them and work fine for them.. I do not know why...
What about upside down? It used to lag badly upside down.

thats weird my xoom doesn't lag when upside down...I do it often took....well only when I'm charging and am using a dock

Its typically on desktop during screen rotation. I know I'm not the only one whose experienced it, I've seen it mentioned a few times before. Its really odd because being upside down should be no different, at least I assume.

You're definitely not the only one. It was a known issue. Happy to say it's fixed now. Though there's a part of me that still wonders how an issue like that ever made it into a major release in the first place.
i think it turns ALOT faster now. Like, I dont mind turning it because it barely takes time anymore.

It was explained at Google I/O I think. Basically Tegra 2 couldn't handle rotation, so they were forced to do it in software. They've probably come up with some clever tricks to optimize things since then, thus the boost in performance.
i still get lag in launcher at portrait mode. not as bad as before, but still lagging.
On the other hand, its very smooth upside down.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
yeah now that I've installed 3.2 I don't see much of a difference at all. Still too laggy for me.
how about trying few times of reboot? cause mine really as smooth as butter now.. removed adw too

I have a Xoom running 3.2. Most of the changes are behind the curtain so you will not notice them in the UI. One change you will notice and use is the zoom feature for non-tablet apps that would appear small even in portrait mode. But when you stretch or fill screen, the sharpness goes away just as am image stretched would be. One thing it did do for my Xoom was enable the MicroSD card but read only. Even my Viewsonic GTab running 2.2 Froyo had read/write permissions on the MicroSD almost a year ago...
In a nutshell, the 3.2 update for the Xoom was about making the Xoom more stable and that it did, much like the 3.1 Build 8.4.4.11 follow-up update for the TF did. As far as new features we can see and play with, well I think we'll be waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0...

I believe that the 3.2 update brings some additional bugfixes that are very significant. Can you report on portrait scrolling between screens? The absolute worst flaw imho is the rendering when it portrait, its just damn ugly.

Smooth as butter on my Xoom swiping screens side to side in portrait mode. Checked it on my TF for you too and smooth as well. Some members have reported lag when turning the tab from landscape to portrait but that is the design not a bug. If it was instant, the screen would be changing every time you made any tilting movement. It has to be at a certain angle for 500ms or so...
Please could you report whether there is any 'judder' in pan shots using an H264 video in stock player?

Tegra 2 devices have to struggle with orientation changes because everything has to be rendered in software instead of hardware (wtf nvidia).
Toss a widget on the homescreen and watch that sucker lag.

Maybe I don't understand. My home page has only BobClock widget but the screen to the right has 4 widgets (YouTube, Market, Media widget and Google Buzz widget). I can scroll right through those pages to the right and back to the left, in landscape and portrait mode with no lag or delay... Should I be seeing something different? I can video it for you if you want to see it...
Use the google player in landscape. Thx for the testing.

When android 3.2 for the galaxy tab 10.1 ?

Hello,
- Why Samsung does not publish the android 3.2 ?
I have a lag with galaxy tab 10.1
- Samsung plans to do something, will solve the problem?
thank you for your help
Last I heard it would be second quarter 201mumblemumblenever.
What is 3.2 supposed to give us?
Just my opinion, but I doubt you will ever see 3.2 on the tab, as stated in the post above. With the next version of android a little over a month away I doubt very much that Samsung is going to waste $ on developing an update that will be extinct in such a short time. Then again, all we have are rumors on ICS.

I can vouch for that
Sent from your mothers house.
You mean download the GT P7500 rom (I am using P7500) and flash it in my GT?
That will reduce the lag by some amount?
Which type of lag exactly are we talking about here? I see lag in some areas, but not others. For instance, I can switch home screens without lag, however in some text boxes, there is significant lag that prevents me from efficiently editing text, especially when I'm using Swype (unfortunately, because I love Swype). Also, in some apps, Swype performs very well, and other times it does not.
So, could you be more specific with where you're experiencing lag? There may be a solution besides flashing a custom ROM (not that I think that's a bad idea either, just a little bit more work).
As far as Google Android Honeycomb 3.2, I don't know if that will happen or not. I tweeted Samsung about it, and got a less-than-stellar response.

Additionally, the developer of Starburst ROM for the Galaxy Tab 10.1" said that he's working on a port of Honeycomb 3.2:
https://twitter.com/#!/JonathanAlvey51/status/117772837544140800
We will probably see Ice Cream Sandwich instead of 3.2.
Thank you for your answers
Not good samsung
Not good at tracking software
Iconia tab a500 has tracking software and android 3.2
Sony S has tracking software and android 3.2
What exactly is tracking software? I had a GT, traded it in for a Sony S, couldn't sleep at night, and just exchanged it for another GT. Nothing too special about 3.2, you could stretch apps that weren't made for tabs..
Probably CarrierIQ

Please...Why do we think we are entitled to everything..I would rather the forgo 3.2 for Ice cream sanwhich and have a full OS upgrade rather the a minor updated.
Not me.
Especially when it comes to repair major problems such as lags
I feel that majors conccurents, are more reactive and present
my lag is panning from home screen to home screen. it stutters when switching home screens. I did a factory reset and it still lags or stutters.

Try clicking the + symbol top right corner, then click other, then click home button, see if swiping lag improves.
Or you can try one of the launchers, like adw ex. Improves lag on homescreens.

thanks for the tip, didn't improve it but it was worth a try. My g/f's Tab pan's fine. Hers is really smooth an doesn't have any panning issues, or opening and closing apps. I'm not sure whats wrong with mine. Is this common with 3.1 or could it be something wrong with my Tab? I just want panning to be smooth and opening/closing apps.

portrait lag tegra 2 issue?

Hi
I am very frustrated with portrait lag on my ioconia a500. I have tried an ics rom made by thor, and same issue. And people are saying that its a tegra 2 issue. Is anyone actually 100% certain that it is a tegra 2 issue? I don't really believe this because I tried out iconia a100 the 7inch honeycomb tablet with tegra 2 and it was buttery smooth in portrait mode. Also, in android 3.1 reverse landscape was also laggy as portrait, and they were saying that it was tegra 2 issue, but in 3.2 update reverse landscape became completely smooth. So I dont get it.. I just want my tablet to work "normal" in portrait mode, at least starting from ics..
What do you guys think? Is it a trgra 2 issue?
Thanks.

Just return it, never had on any rom, but just brouse and read books in that mode.
What hone app do you use? Probably your problem, try adw or go launcher or launcher pro...hell even the ics launcher. I've never had any issues with mine, I also don't use the stock home ap.
I would say it's normal with 3.2 . I get 1 second lag when changing.
There is an Acer calibration tool, somewhere, but I advise NOT to use it. It has been known to brick some tabs.
