I've read EVERY thread on this board in both Universal sections (not including accessories.)
There are lots of "how to UNBRICK your Universal" threads, but all threads with references on how to avoid bricking it in the first place are convoluted.
Can someone take up the task of making "The Definititive Guide to Rom Switching your Universal" that
1. Works for ANY HTC Universal variant
2. Starts w/ the standard "sync up your Universal" warning
3. Lists all software needed (extended rom unlockers, the roms themselves, radio update)
4. Runs all software in order so that the dreaded county code and syncing errors never show up
Can someone take up this task?
Again, this isnt about "best software" for the Universal. We are JUST talking about Rom switching...
i agree this would be really helpful. it's a tricky path to tread and a "one-stop" how to guidev would be great.
i agree this would be really helpful. it's a tricky path to tread and a "one-stop" how to guidev would be great.
Yeah this would be a great Sticky, especially as it looks like we are all about to receive a new ROM thanks to one of XDA-Developers users having just got a new Exec with a newer ROM version than the one available on O2's website.
BTW does'nt O2's website give detailed instructions on reflashing the original ROM that they have available for d/l? I cant get that far on their site as you need to fill out IMEI/Phone Number/Inside leg measurement etc before you can d/l it.
Can someone d/l it and see it it comes with instructions for applying and post info here, maybe its what we are looking for?
Here is the Pdf doc that comes with the software download
@bakerk, can you open the .exe in winrar or similar instead of running it? If you can is there seperate files in the .exe? i.e. an flash application and the actual ROM file? Or is the file not a self extracting archive?
Regards
-edit btw thanks for the posted pdf!
ok here is a list of the files looking in through winrar
\EnterBL.exe 5.496
\GetDeviceData.exe 10,104
\ms_.nbf 10,485,932
\nk.nbf 66,715,820
\radio_.nbf 10,633,900
\ROMUpgradeUt.exe 77,824
\RUU.conf 156
\RUU.dll 200,704
\UI.dll 282,624
As I recall these are the standard files for an upgrade
K
So it should be okay to use that update from O2 along with the ROM dump from Moandal http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=35810 when it gets posted, to upgrade all our Exec's to Moandal's Exec's latest ROM?
(Edit 07.11.2011: I was able to extract and modify the ROM. Send me a PM after reading the thread if you want the download link.)
Hi everybody,
I am sorry to post this in the General section, but the forum would not let me post to the appropriate threads of the developer forums as apparently I am considered too noob. Anyway ...
I have an Iconia A500 on Acer_A500_4.017.07_EMEA_CUS7, rooted with IconiaRoot.
I am being offered the OTA update to Acer_A500_7.006.01_EMEA_CUS7, but do not want to install because I would loose root.
So I would like to download the ROM from the Acer website and modify it according to the procedure listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18202192&postcount=19
I looked into this thread for the download link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14501467&postcount=1
Unfortunately, the link I need is not listed there. Does anybody know the link? Can I somehow extract it myself (I have root access and my A500 offers to update)?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Cheers,
Tim
Is it possible to accept the download and then halt the process once the download is complete? And then to copy the rom to your pc to fiddle with?
Sent from my A500 using xda premium
Hi,
I suspect that the download link might be extractable from the LogCat once I accept the download. But I am not sure if I can cancel the update process completely once I have accepted. So I am hesitant to try.
Cheers,
Tim
I understand if you just want to do it yourself. However, if that isn't the case this rom is all ready to go. Stock with only superuser and busybox installed. I've been using it for a while and it is rock solid.
There is another one too. I didn't try it out but, from the feedback I read, it is also working great for most folks...
Hi, and sorry for replying so late (I was on travel),
thanks a lot for the links, JdgM3NT4L! It is not that I actually _want_ to modify the stock ROM myself, but I have a European version of the A500 (EMEA_CUS7) and am therefore hesitant to just install a ROM based on a US version of the A500. I am not sure if there are actually any significant differences, but do not want to risk it.
I think I found the information on how to extract the path of the update in one of the threads of the developer forum (sorry, I don't remember exactly wherefrom):
3. Start a system update on the A500, and let the download start.
4. Start the Terminal Emulator (vt100), and type su . Then cd to the /cache area.
locate the file name of whats being downloaded. In my case: Acer_A500_1.141.07_4.010.11_COM_GEN1_1311224632952 _461992b1
5. Then on the PC create a full http path and do a download of the URL contructed
using the file name in your cache directory. Example:
http://cdn.acer.futuredial.com/Acer_...2_461992b1.zip
Click to collapse
I think I will try that. If it works I will report the download link here.
Cheers,
Tim
Hi again,
it worked like a charm. Here is the link:
http://cdn.acer.futuredial.com/Acer_A500_0.000.00_7.006.01_EMEA_CUS7_1316137080209_4c23a157.zip
The MD5 is: B80BB5A64BD694F1D615D4D3DD60C19A
Next I will try to modify the ROM according to these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18146210&postcount=1

Glad you got it. Good luck.
Hi again,
ok, I modified the ROM according to kekinash's instructions. It turns out the update script in the EMEA_CUS7 ROM is _not_ identical to the one in the COM_GEN2 version!
In line 27 of the script there is a very long entry starting with "retouch_binaries(...)". A handful of the entries in this long line are different in the EMEA_CUS7 ROM. I therefore replaced the line in kekinash's script with the one from the EMEA_CUS7 ROM. Everything else was identical.
I installed the ROM on my A500 and so far everything seems to work fine. But I will have to test it further to make sure there are no hiccups.
I guess other european users might be interested in the ROM image, but I am not sure if I can upload it or infringe any copyrights by doing so.
Cheers,
Tim
Hi,
My english is not good, so I hope you will understand.. I would be very much interested in your modifyed rom. I read the thread about unpacking and modifying, but I dont understand how to do it, possibly because of my poor english. maybe you couldt upload only the modifyed file, which I should change.
thanks
Udo
Hi Udo,
I will send you a PM with a download link for the modified ROM image. If anybody else would like to have it, please just ask and I will send you the link.
I played around with the ROM for some time. Generally, everything seems to work just fine!
One problem I encountered, though, was that the android web browser crashed badly and I had to reboot the tablet to fix it. Since then it worked fine. Also, Google Maps gave me a strange behaviour at some point: It just exited repeatedly without any error message (no force close). I do not know if these issues are related to the modified ROM image or if their appearance was just a coincidence. If anybody tries the modified ROM, I would be happy about feedback!
Ok, and the following is obvious: I take no responsibility whatsoever for any problems you might encounter when flashing this ROM image. Also, please follow the instructions given in kekinash's thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18146210&postcount=1
Cheers,
Tim
Hi again,
I updated the thread title so that people looking for the ROM have a chance of finding it.
Here is some more information. The MD5 of the modified ROM image is: D423B84727BFD91429490D319F30998F
In the meantime, I have tested the A500 with this ROM much more. The browser has not exhibited any further problems.
Google Maps continued to act up (kept quitting without error message repeatedly). In the Market, it was listed under "Not Installed", and I had the options "Install" and "Deinstall updates". Both options did not do anything at all. So something was clearly wrong. I still cannot say if this was related to the modified ROM or some other problem. Anyway, here is how I fixed it:
Removed Google Maps with Titanium Backup. Reinstalled from the Market. Converted it to System App again with Titanium Backup. Everything works fine now.
Cheers,
Tim

2.1 Language: XDA is a worldwide community. As a result what is ‘ok’ to say in your part of the world may not be ok in someone else’s part of the world. Please think about who is reading what you write. Keep in mind that what you think of as acceptable use of language may not be acceptable to others. Conversely, while reading member posts, remember that word you find offensive may not be to the writer. Tolerance is a two way street.
2.2 Nudity: XDA is used by people of all ages, including minors. It's not acceptable to post nude/pornographic imagery, which includes exposure of the male or female genitalia or of female breasts.
2.3 Flaming: XDA was founded as a group of people sharing information about certain mobile phones. Sharing does not involve virtual yelling (flaming) it does involve working together to solve problems in an environment of mutual respect and understanding. Losing your temper and flaming another member, or group of members, is not acceptable behavior.
2.4 Personal attacks, racial, political and/or religious discussions: XDA is a discussion forum about certain mobile phones. Mobile phones are not racial, political, religious or personally offensive, therefore none of these types of discussions are permitted on XDA.
2.5 Courtesy towards other Members: Treat new members the way you would like to have been treated when you were a new member. 2.6 All members are expected to read and adhere to the XDA rules.
3. Post only using a clear subject and message.
You're most likely to receive a helpful answer to your question if you use a short subject title that describes your problem and a message that explains in detail what your problem is and what you've tried to solve it.
4. Use the English language.
We understand that with all the different nationalities not everyone speaks English well, but please try. If you're really unable to post in English use an online translator, You're free to include your original message in your own language below the English translation.
5. Post a message only once.
As a large forum we don't need unnecessary clutter, You're free to edit your message as you like, so if you do not receive an answer revisit your message and see if you can describe your problem better. Not everyone is online at the same time, it might take a while before you receive an answer.
6. Do not post warez.
If a piece of software requires you to pay to use it, then pay for it. We do not accept warez nor do we permit any member to promote or describe ways in which Warez, cracks, serial codes or other means of avoiding payment, can be obtained. 7. Do not spam.
If you wish to advertise a product, contact us we provide ads. But do not post it in the forums, it will be removed and you're likely to receive a ban.
You are however allowed to sell used goods like your own device, parts of your device or accessories for your device in the marketplace forum, please read the rules there before posting. (This rule includes signatures, if you use a signature it will appear in your post)

However donations up front are not allowed, this forum is about sharing, not about getting paid to do something, that's what your job is for.
9. Don't get us in trouble.
Don't post copyrighted materials or do other things that will obviously lead to legal trouble. If you wouldn't do it on your own homepage, you probably don't want to do it here either. This does not mean we agree with everything the software piracy lobby try to impose on us, it simply means you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with legal hassle caused by you. Please use common sense: respect the forum, its users, and those that write great code.
10. Help others if you can.
If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably already quite a few people newer than you that would benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.
11. Don’t post with the intention of selling something.
Don’t use XDA to advertise your product or service. Proprietors of for-pay products or services, may use XDA to get feedback, provide beta access, or a free version of their product for XDA users and offer support, but not to post with the intention of selling. This includes promoting sites similar/substantially similar to XDA-Developers.com.

B) the site is a relatively small personal website without commercial advertising/links (i.e. not a competitor forum-based site with purposes and aims similar to those of XDA-Developers.com.)
12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If a dispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails then you may contact a moderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence you created the work then in the spirit of sharing all work will remain posted on the forums.
As an addition, developers have the right to hold exclusivity over their work for as long as it is deemed necessary by the dev or freely share it. However, if the work is claimed as exclusive, it must remain as such. No selective sharing will be allowed (ie allowing certain people to use it and not others). Should the dev decide to start sharing the work with others, the work automatically becomes fair game for all to use.
In regards to permissions, same rules remain for this but if permission was already given, unless there is a very valid reason, it cannot be revoked (same applies to major updates on the work). Under that same premise, permissions cannot be denied unless the work is exclusive or under severe circumstances.
In plain English: If you want to keep your work exclusive, go for it. However, if you are going to share your work, do it fairly.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA (including but not limited to ROMs, RUUs, apps, games, kernels, themes, icons, etc) unless that software comes with a license that waives these rules.
13. Advertising and Income Generation
Commercial advertising, advertising referral links, pay per click links and other income generating methods are forbidden. Do not use xda-developers as a means to make money.
14. Create only one User Account
You are allowed one User Account at xda-developers. If you create additional accounts, Moderators will disable them and your original account may also be disabled or infracted.

Whilst a minor amount of off-topic posting may be overlooked, the general rule is your posts / threads must be relevant to the Forum / thread in which you are posting.

Are you sure that you have lost your root ?
Have you make a backup from your root before the JB update ?
If yes, normally you can restore it without problem. The backup of your root doesn't made automaticaly
If not, I think that it lost.
Thanks for the reply.I actually had a backup that i had with the OTA root keeper, however for some reason the update wiped all my data, incl. my personal files inside the tablet.SO as a result, everything is gone.(btw i updated from the download version from ASUS site, not OTA update, and my device is unlocked)
Hi, thanks for this thread "Tiger"....we needed it
To answer the root problem, you'll need to do the root over again....its not that bad though.
I had to do it....so follow the links at the top of this thread and do as they say, I used the method for the TF300T and the CWM Touch recovery.....worked like a charm.
I am only wondering if I can put back on the tablet EZ-Overclock?....heard they had issues on the TF300T JB
Thank you.

I also have a rooted TF300TG and would like to do the JB thing. I can not find a clear way of doing it on the 300TG though.
I also have a backup of the current ICS root. Currently sh.. scared of rendering the tablet useless as I use it for trading.
Okay now that the firmware is up on Asus's website I can update too (can't OTA) so any comment on the update itself for tg users? I saw this thread & people has reported many issues: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1857288
so since our update came long after 300t how's this update for us? are those issue fixed, anything to report? as someone who has just bought his tf300tg and is perfectly happy with ICS should I go on & update or wait for later updates from Asus?

TF300TG - Got OTA ...
Hi' all.
I also have TF300TG which is rooted. I got OTA message from ASUS.
For now i've posponed install. But i'm wondering. Does any one know if it's ok to do OTA update and will it be posible to use Voodoo OTA RootKeeper to recover root, or will i have to go with the whole procedure shown in this topic?
Please, help
Backup the root via Voodoo, and normally it will be good. That's what I have done for my 300TF.
After the update, just restored and updated SuperSu or Superuser

Hi All and XDA...
I asked this question myself (Upgrade to JB while rooted and unlocked bootloader) and decided to do it myself following this method.
Credits go to the following person krabappel2548 for his thread and the members below for their help in all this....thank you!!!
This worked for me and you follow this at your own risk!!! I wont take responsibility for Bricked or Broken Tablets!!!

Dear Asus Transformer TF300TG users,
Asus released the Jellybean update. Here is a guide which will let you:
- Prepare your tablet for the Jellybean update
- Update your tablet to Jellybean software
- Install recovery and give you root acces
== Part 1 - Prepare the tablet ==
First we need to install the .V9.4.4.40 update to be able to upgrade to the Jellybean software, then we will do the actual upgrade to Jellybean.
1) Download the V9.4.4.40 update: Asus support site
2) Got to recovery and make a backup
3) In recovery do to a factory reset and wipe dalvik cache
- TWRP recovery: Wipe => Dalvik Cache and Wipe => Factory reset
- CWM recovery: Factory reset and Advanced => Wipe Dalvik Cache
4) Flash the Asus recovery "Here I had to change the way I did this as it would not flash for me in recovery mode, I unzipped the ICS zip and unzipped it again to receive the BLOB file, place this file with the fastboot file in the adb folder
4.1) Open a command prompt in the same folder of the adb and fastboot files (Shift + Right mouse)
4.2) Reboot into the bootloader of your tablet, type: adb reboot bootloader
4.3) When your tablet has reached the bootloader navigate with volume down to the usb icon and press volume up to confirm.
4.4) To flash the recovery type:
- fastboot -i 0x0b05 flash recovery blob
5) Then reboot the tablet holding down the power button or using fastboot.
The Jellybean update will only be automatically launched with stock recovery
== Part 2 - Upgrade to Jellybean ==
This will upgrade your tablet to Jellybean (Android 4.1)
6) Here I unzipped the V10.4.3.7 file I download from the Asus website for my Tablet to receive another zip.....again make sure its the correct SKU!!! and place that zip file onto the internal sdcard of the tablet using the cable and computer.....once I had done this I then unplugged the tablet from the computer and checked the notification area on the tablet, now automatically it said there is an upgrade available and when clicking on it the process will start.
== Part 3 - Install recovery and rooting ==
Follow this part on the attached thread (Part 3)
This should do the same for you, but if you are having trouble I will try help you best I can, or you are more than welcome to try it the OP way on his thread.
If I have helped you please hit THANKS button....its free and I appreciate it
Also thank the Members below....please

Thank you.
Update worked like a charm, root restore did too.
BUT...
during JB update i've left SDCard in TF300 microSD slot and ... tablet can't see this one particular sd card!!!!
1. card works perfectly in every other device (htc phone, laptop etc)
2. card reader in tf300 works perfectly - other cards work
3. even this card works in tablet when i connected it through dock usb (via phone) - didn't test it via docks sdcard reader (i don't have adpater with me).
4. (new) - tested with adapter to full SD in sd card reader in dock station and this card works!!!, in Tablets microSdCardReader still doesn't.
It seems, like JB update remembered this card in some way, and doesn't want to mount it again.
(card was reformated, and even wiped (zeroed) totaly, partitioned and formated again....)
still doesn't work...
Any Ideas? Where JB can keep this information? card S/N? Did any one had this problem??

Hi there,
I have a Tf300tg and it was rooted before the update. Unfortunately I didn't see any problem in update to JB, so I just updated the firmware. The problem it's that when I tried to install titanium backup it says that I don't have the root on the tablet and I don't have a backup of the root. Can I root again? I have the superUser installed yet. Can anyone help me with that?
Thanks!

Have you installed and backuped your root with Vodoo Rootkeeper ?
If not, you have lost your root and that's why TB says you din't have root.
Use Root checker from Google play for be sure of that.
HELLO ALL,
The OTA 4.1.1 & later 4.5.1 was pushed to Apollo & Saturn (NEW GEN HDX 8.9") Devices adding firefly functionality along with other functionality (WHICH ARE CRAP ACCORDING TO ME)
So in order to get the device back to JB ie.. 3.X version Contact amazon customer services and Say that the Kindle is not working properly after the updates & roll back to the 3.x version.
have the device fullly charged 80% or more and they will initiate a Rollback.
Remember the device will never Get any OTA after this !!
Also it would be a lot lot helpful if some one can locate the ota file downloaded (via ES file explorer) so that we can copy it & share on XDA & help other fellow men.
Also I'd request you to contact Amazon via Phone for Source Code & bootloader info & get the call escalated to higher officials so that there are possibilities of getting info.
I'd request all the devs & members to file a petition (Change.org) with regards to the bootloader and simultaneously work on development
All active members & Ashamed owners of HDX's (Ashamed because with marvellous hardware we have a Crappy OS) include or add devs in this sections via PM or replies so that they can look over this & find a solution soon.
Also I'm thinking that a manual roll back can be done but it needs testing & i need some help in that as well
I believe all the magic is with build.prop & ota.prop that checks the versions.
Interested members can carry on the work here and update the results as well
In the mean time any suggestions are also appreciated
Anyone who will do the rollback, please root device and place file /cache/recovery/last.log (something like that) here.
Thank you.

What will that have?
Give as much as info possible please.
Another observation : As manual update via bin file can be done on Kindle, I opened the file via WinRar & was able to see contesnts as a Zip File so why cant we add su and required root files then update kindle ???
As far as the bin file check is concerned..build.prop edit will work
This give to us name and location of rollback file and some other information about upgrade (downgrade) process.
It is necessary to start somewhere...
About your observation - we can''t flash modified bin in any way.
Btw during upgrade latest firmwares check not only build.prop but keys that located in system recovery. So modifying build.prop is not enough.
Well thanks a lot for the info mate I didn't knew that!!
Just for curiosity how will that file lead. Just need more info about it... I might get that file to you and will that file be even after s factory reset is performed?

Do you have a HDX?
Which one n will there be any problem if I get thor's file? Does it need to be specific?
Can get the file n other stuff within 2 days to you..
Let me also know about keys n. Bin stuff... Atleast point me to some info thread I'll read...
btw a rollback editing bin file worked! I tried to do the same but on 4.5 os now
Any one on 4.3 can try opening 4.5.bin file adding root and then updating...may b can try atleast!?
rollback file is "mod-update-kindle-thor-13.3.2.6_user_713326020.bin"
it is all I know at this moment.
And "NO" again, every editing of original bin corrupts CRC, and file do not pass checking. Do not waste the time. Do you think that no one tried for a year to do it?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but has anyone tried calling the support and asking them to rollback and had success? I just want to make sure that they will do it before I try it
Yes. Guy from my russian forum successfully rolled back after contacting support. So it possible. And he sent me logs of this downgrade in which I saw name of rollback-file - mod-update-kindle-thor-13.3.2.6_user_713326020.bin
Got the Kindle on 14.3.2.7_user_372002520
Unable to root it ! ADB doesn't recognizes device anymore....
I was curious on .bin mod. (Yes i can imagine people trying to edit .bin but i needed an explanation thats it.....)
Now let me know what next !!! ??
How do i proceed ??

HELP.
Can anyone explain me how to downgrade? I got the update-kindle-13.4.1.1_user_411010320.bin and update-kindle-13.3.2.5_user_325001120.bin. But when I try to flash the rom the mentioned way it sais that it isn't possible because there is a newer rom installed. how can I circumvent this problem? Any ideas?
You need to contact Customer Support.
At this moment only they can initiate downgrade.
BTW be careful. Maybe now downgradable version is 13.3.2.7 and its not rootable. But I'm not sure.

What are you looking for exactly?
There's really nothing you can do with 4.1.1 — rooting, custom ROMs, etc. require you be on 14/13.3.2.6 or lower.

Okay, why is that? Is there more information on that? I also read a response from the Amazon support posted on another (German) board which warned about the same thing and that further updates might require help from customer support.... I just don't understand why you loose OTA capability? Even if it doesn't update automatically (which most people prefer a anyway, I guess), wouldn't you be able to just initiate an OTA by clicking on it in system preferences ?
Thanks!
Gave it a go, here is my experience:
I started a chat and asked to roll back to 14/13.3.2.6, the person was happy to help and did not dig into they wy. The steps they had me follow:
- factory reset
- re-register device (was still on 4.5.1 as would be expected)
- they pushed something, I saw a system update in the notify tray but it was only there for a brief moment
- They then had me check for updates
- I told them it did not find anything
- I took a look at my kindle storage and there were 6 nameless files that showed up. When I looked at their properties there was no name or file type on them. I tried to copy them off the device but it would not let me, got a generic access message about not being able to copy the files.
- I was then told that 4.5.1 can not be rolled back and that I should return the tablet for a refund (they did say 4.1.1 can be rolled back). I think this was to be expected based on the "kill switch" code that was found in the new update. I can't find the post/link to the conversation now but I think it was code found in the kernel. Not sure Kill switch is the right term either.
- They are providing me a free shipping label
- Will likely get a 2013 Nexus 7
I'm sorry I'm new to how these forums work and replies and all that. Is there a way to downgrade from 4.5.1 to be able to root? It would be really helpful if someone could give me a straight answer as to if it can be done or not. Thanks!
I tried following Sony's "walkthrough" for rooting my new X2A. It's a horrible walkthrough, as it took me a few youtube videos to understand how to get my bootloader unlocked. But now it is. And now I'm supposed to use Emma, which states is compatible with the X2A, but it sees my phone and states "No matching services". (See here [add an http before it though] : talk.sonymobile.com/t5/General-Discussion/Emma-Xperia-X2A-quot-No-matching-services-quot/m-p/1313898) So I have put in a request, but I'm asking here because I've found so many more answers that are from people with actual experiences who give answers.
The post on Sonymobile seems to warrant a reply of "Oh, sorry we didn't get updated for your phone" or "your phone's not supported anymore". But I figured this is the [one of the] newest phone they've released for dev options... Are there any other options to flash? It seemed that Emma would give me my Sony-fed options but still root. I'm not looking to run anything fancy; I just want my old root-requiring apps to work. And to uninstall most of Google.
Should I just resort to TWRP? Are there any images out there? I'd looked up whether the phone was rootable, how easy, etc. before I chose it, and I found a few forums that made it sound like it was super easy, Sony-supported, and whatnot. But now that I have it, I can't find anything of use.
Would appreciate any direction. Thanks in advance.
