I had a HTC Desire and bought a Galaxy S. I didn't notice a big different between the screen on those 2. Now I bought the Desire HD, and I'm VERY disappointed with the screen on this! Yesterday I ordered a Galaxy Tab, but I cancelled it now, as I'm VERY afraid that this screen is not as good as the one on the Galaxy S. Having used an AMOLED, I think everything else is a step-down...
Anybody used a Galaxy S for some time that uses the Pad? How is the screen quality? What about Androids coming soon with at least 4" Amoled?
Samsung manufacture something like 90%+ of all the AMOLED panels in the world and they've only just announced the first 7" on for use in mobile devices, so it'll be a while before we see anything Tab-sized with an AMOLED or sAMOLED display (current rumours say June 2011).
The screen on the tab is excellent. I doubt any of the alternatives currently running android have better screens, so its a pity you cancelled your order.
I have an HTC Desire and bought a Galaxy Tab over the weekend. The screen on the Tab is really good - it's very, very bright and very clear. Only difference is the blacks aren't quite as 'black' as the HTC.
Re-order, you won't regret it.

Ditto!
The screen on the Tab is very good, even when compared to the AMOLED Desire.

Dave
Is very very good

Two thumbs up. Don't know what the fuss is all about on AMOLED. The Tab is real beautiful.

I find the Tab's display more than adequate. The colors are vibrant (saturation can be adjusted) and the white/black levels can be configured too.
The IPS technology used in the latest Apple products offer better viewing angles (in terms of maintaining color and contrast), whereas the Tab's display tends to wash-out some details. That being said, it is still amongst the better displays, nothing deal-breaking. There's also a slight issue with regards to refresh rates, which creates a tiny bit of ghosting, particularly visible with text rendering. Once again, it's a really minor issue, just being picky here.
Overall, I absolutely love reading and playing on the device, the screen is simply beautiful. I haven't tried outdoors yet, but I guess it's like every single multitouch-display out there: it sucks !
I also have a Vibrant but so far the Tab's screen has very good so far. I've only had it for less than a day but I can say it's at least not strikingly apparent.
I have both Galaxy S and Tab.
Side by side, S has better screen. Black is really black because of the amoled technic and the overall contrast is better.
But Tab has also very good screen, it is excellent. If there wasn't the S to compare, I couldn't imagine any better.
I have installed SBF 1.5.2 right after I got my Atrix so I don't know if it is related to that but in my opinion the colors of the display are not vibrant / colorful compared to my HTC Desire Z (Vision/G2) and that phone has no AMOLED.
Compared to the HTC the colors all look a little bit greyer and I don't like it.
Is it possible to change that or am I the only one?
Thanks in advance.
You're comparing two different screen types. The Atrix uses TFT pentile and the Desire Z uses S-LCD. The Atrix is already known for some washed out colors like yellow.
Ah, thanks.
So it is not possible to change that with a software update like Google did in Android 2.3.3!?
I agree that the display is "not as nice" as other phones. My captivate IMO looks better.
yes the captivate is brighter but it also hurts my eyes after staring at it for a while. i wonder if there is going to be a program like galaxy tuner for the atrix. with galaxy tuner you can adjust the yellow color of the screen.

It could be possible, we just need to tear down the kernel (once it gets worked around) and play with it some. It was kinda funny though because after giving my Captivate to my GF and getting my atrix, I look at the Cappy and go "Holy crap that screen is REALLY blue"
I was surprised on the Atrix screen. The forum didn't give it justice. The characters looks very sharp. Colors are easy to the eyes and no pixels at all!

just take a look at your battery meter when it's green.
any green (like real green, not dark) text on the web shows the obvious differences between the PenTile display and a regular LCD.
IMHO the display of the Atrix is one of the worst displays in a high end phone that I have seen in the last time.
Only the resolution is great, the rest isn't really high end.
Yellow looks more like dirt and faster scrolling or movements show black shadows (e. g. in Angry Birds).
is it just my phone or what here?
I have noticed the saturation of colors on my atrix are just horrible specially green which makes yellow and orange that's why yellow and orange are really off... just me or everyone? if so anyone got an idea on how to tackle this issue?
search is your friend, its not just your phone. Its also not really a problem for a lot of people, myself included, since id take it over supersaturated colors any day.
The Colors on my phone look like the colors on my Touch Pro. What I mean is that they look the way they should.

Agreed, mine looks fine to my eyes. Best looking screen I've ever had on a device besides my G73JW.

I cannot complain. My color look ok to me.
The resolution is amazing I can't lie but the quality and the color are **** compared to my amoled desire.. green is too dark and the quality of the picture is wack too pixelated...
everyone who says it's not important is lying at least a little. the screen is not perfect, period. one needs only to look at a green image or moving red image to see the flaws in the screen design.

As a color blind person I can say that the greens look fine to me. and thanks for saying I am lying even if only a little.
There have been a couple of colour comparisons, and I believe the concensus has been that the Atrix has more "realistic" colours, while we are more used to other devices having colours that "pop" with over saturation. We have become accustomed to over saturation, and so when we see colours on a screen that more closely match real world colours, we think there is something wrong. I will take the Atrix colours over anything else I have used.
<edit> I have seen one comparison where correct colour calibration techniques were used to compare the Atrix to I believe the iPhone4. I will try to find it again and post a link.
i am wondering what Samsung was thinking
when made of this.
Natural mode has washed out colors and normal mode
has over saturated colors .
We need something between. Is that so difficult?
ur thead is a joke
There are no oversaturated colors
All AMOLEDs are like this and I think display is very good.
Natural mode is pretty much perfect imo.

Agreed. Don't know if it's worth ranting about though.

Totally disagree, natural looks washed out and very dull. My iPad 3 and Galaxy Nexus is much more vibrant.
To me standard, looks fine. Just a touch too over staturated but I like it, like that.
great joke im laughing
Coming from an WVGA TFT LCD on the HD2, the Natural Mode on the SGS3 seems to highlight the best of both worlds.

You are correct. Earlier today I was messing around with Screen Adjuster and it was skewing my side-by-side iPad / GS3 tests. I've edit my original post.

You should knew it before you decided to buy GS3.

Standard mode is over saturated especially in games
and when browsing.
An extra mode between standard and natural would be
ideal for 99% of people.
They should just release all phones with a screen calibration mode after the first boot up.
People fail to realize that humans only see about 10 million colours so that the 16 million available, regardless of screen technology, is all there natural or not. There could be a variety of factors that contribute to AMOLED looking less natural but if I were to hazard a guess.
- people are used to seeing LCD looking colours.
- the LEDS are closer to the screen on AMOLED.
- Complete blacks trick our eyes into seeing colours around the black abyss as being brighter than they really are.
And of course the obvious such as a coloured organic Light source vs a white light source plus colour filter. And also the backlight needed on LCDs.
I think consumers just have to be desensitized to AMOLED displays and it will start to look natural. Or Samsung should do a better job with the natural mode and mimic LCD better. Or they should just give free reign of colour calibration like they do on HDTVs and add a back light. So if you like AMOLED, turn off the backlight. If you don't, leave it on. Barring the texture of the LCD colour filter, an AMOLED display with a backlight would look just like an IPS LCD display.

I'm sure your phone will be welcomed in the "for sale" section of the xda marketplace, seen as though your not happy with it! This threads a joke....

You know what is a joke? All the US versions don't even have a screen mode option. Oversaturation is nothing new for AMOLEDs but it can be remedied and has been remedied before, simply by providing an option. A lot of people like the contrast and viewing angles of AMOLEDs but don't like the excessive colors. I guess Samsung thinks Americans are all colorblind and took the extra effort to REMOVE the option altogether when they tried so hard to make everything else the same. The international S2 had color adjustments too, but not my T-mobile one. Then there's the terrible audio capture. Always taking two steps forward, one step back.
I quite like having an option to change my screen settings rather than not having an option. Thank you Samsung.

I agree as well that screen modes could be better "optimised" that sammy would give us something between natural and standard, but different to you i am feeling that was step in right direction, im sure that next phone will have those much better optimised.

Due to the chipsets. Samsung used the television engine. The screen modes on my international SGS3 is the same ones as on my TV, producing nearly same effects (TV=LCD, SGS3=AMOLED). Sony uses their Bravia engine in their phones.
Hey guys, you do realise people are entitled to an opinion, right? Stop dismissing the OP blindly.
I happen to agree that the default profiles are not as good as they could be. Simply accepting that AMOLED is oversaturated by nature doesn't mean something can't be done about it in software. So before jumping down someone's throat, perhaps consider that they may have a legitimate concern.
Anyone else disappointed with the vibrancy of the colours on the Nexus 7? My phone is a Galaxy S II running CM9 with colour temperature calibration done via Fluxi kernel, and side by side comparisons of the Play Store splash page, as an example, really shame the Nexus 7. I know sAMOLED can account for certain differences but I was wondering if anyone knew of any way to colour calibrate the Nexus' screen?
I agree. The colors are a bit washed out and not calibrated correctly. Hopefully an update soon will fix this or at least have an option on the setting menu.

For me, setting brightness manually made a big difference. Out of box, it was flat and dull and boring. Comparing colors to my Viewsonic IPS monitor, seem pretty close.
comparing amoled to ips is silly. amoled is much better.
my galaxy nexus looks better but i don't plan to spend much time holding them side by side.
You can't get an IPS screen to have the same color vibrancy as a Super AMOLED.

I agree, the screen makes video look really washed out, especially compared to the One X or good quality PC screens. I hope there will be a software to mitigate this issue.
Yes compare to my galaxy note... its wash out. But is very sharp no complaint for $200 vs $700 galaxy note
