My phone reset itself for no reason. It was laggy so I restarted. When it rebooted, all the apps I had installed wod force close (samsung default apps worked fine) and all my personal info was gone (phone nos, contacts, settings, etc).
When this happened first two times, i replaced my phone. Now it happened on the replacemwnt SGS.
I am thinking it may be the sd card (I am using an 8gb external sd I have from my previous Moto Mestone). I've been running for about a week with no reset since I took the card out from the phone. I would however like to use the sd card for the additional storage.
Anybody know if the sd card could have been the problem and maybe how to fix it?

Yes, it sounds like this
Did you already try to boot the phone without the external-SD-Card being plugged in? Or just tried booting with another external SD-Card?
If not, copy over your data form ext. SD-Card to your PC and reformat the external SD-Cardwithin the system settings.
Maybe there are some system files from your Milestone left which SGS doesn't like
Installed Darky's rom. Do not seem to have that problem anymore.
Thanks

Whenever I try to download a rom or anything from the web, it crashes and I get download unsuccessful. I am currently running CM10 beta 4 which I had to transfer from computer as I could not download directly. I think it may be due to the partitioning of my internal memory. Anyone have any suggestions?

I doubt it has anything to do with your partitioning. What browser are you using to download? Have you tried GooManager or the new CMUpdater built into CM? And is it for everything you try to download or just ROMs?

I had a similar issue, Couldn't download anything, couldn't install any app that needed to go on the sd card, couldn't download cyanogen updates. running 'fix permissions' wouldn't work through cwm or in recovery.
I ended up pulling off all the important data on my sd card and formating it with SDFormatter and doing a factory reset on my nook.
everything works fine now. my card was a card that had been used in android device previously, perhaps there were folders/permissions on some things that was horking it up. idk, but I'm running the latest nightly now and everything works great.

The problem is the CM10 is very finicky about the format of the card. If it does not like it, it mounts it read only. And using SDFormatter usually fixes it.

Hi! While I am new to this community as a poster, I have used CM ROMS since version 7 without issue (many thanks to leapinlar for learning me a few things!).
Now I have a problem to which I cannot find an answer. After loading CM 10.1.XX to SD Card via the instructions here -
most of the services shut down - Exchange & Gallery at first, then most apps, starting with Google Play. Here's what I have done:
1. Format SD card using SDFormatter (Sandisk 8GB Class 4 Micro SD card);
2. Burn image to card - have tried v5, 6 & 7;
3. remove card, reinsert, copy CM 10.1.xx.encore.zip (have tried 10.1.1, 10.1.2, 10.1.3)
4. Insert into NC, boot, then everything goes haywire.
With only the CM on the card, Exchange & Gallery both stop working ("unfortunately, xx has stopped working"). I disabled both, as I do not use Exchange, nor do I necessarily need the Gallery) Problem disappears. I then set up WiFi, shut down, copy gapps-jb-xx to the card from my PC, reinsert into NC, boot into SD Recovery, it does its thing, then shuts down. I start up the NC again, now the apps don't work - "unfortunately, GooglePlay has stopped working", "Gmail has stopped working", "process.gapps.x.x has stopped working", etc., until nothing works the way it is supposed to.
Now I have tried this several different ways, always starting with a clean (formatted) MicroSD card (I assume it's clean if it's formatted, right?), & am unable to keep everything working. I have flushed the caches, tried different combinations of the CM & gapps files, & nothing seems to work - these services/processes still shut down.
Could this be a hardware failure of some sort? Am I missing a step? Do I need to flush caches & clear data manually (not sure how to flush cache/Dalvik cache manually, but when setting up, the screen says "clearing caches")? I have used the alternate installs (uAltRAM, etc.) for automated flushing, but nothing works for me like it did in CM 7 or even CM 9. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help

A quick format with SDFormatter will not be clean. You need to do a full format. I suspect that is your problem.
One other thing you can do is install my alternate CWM so that you can wipe /system and /data between installs. See my section B in my NC Tips thread.

Thanks so much for your response! As soon as I get the chance, I will do a full format ("overwrite" rather than "erase" - the card does not support "erase", only "quick" & "overwrite"). I will also check out your tips & go from there. Thanks again for your reply & for all of your hard work!
To Leapinlar - awesome!

OK, so I followed your instructions, & I was obviously doing things incorrectly. Wiped the SD card completely with "full-overwrite" using SDFormatter, then, for good measure, formatted again with Windows (probably overkill, but I did it anyway); installed CM 10.1.3; cleared cache using your alternate install, installed compatible gapps, now everything just works! Sorry for wasting anyone's time, all I had to do was not be lazy in the SDFormat department & I would have had no problem. Thanks again & Happy Thanksgiving!
hello, i had recently bought new moto x play, updated to marshmallow and installed whats app, i am facing the problem that whats app is crashing. Then the chat is disappearing, sometimes when i take whats app, there will be only chat labels(chat names) and no messages inside it, the very next time there will not be any chat names too. I tried uninstalling whatsapp, clear data, and even factory reset phone, no use. Tried installing latest version 3-5 times...
I don't use any cache clear applications
Do you have an external sd card and are you using that as expanded storage? Maybe your sd card is corrupt somehow.

I tried removing sd card, but the same issue persists

I have a question about doing a TWRP backup and restore from an SD card. I was able to backup my current ROM to my SD card (I should note that I am running Marshmallow and using my SD card as adoptable storage), but I am not able to access the backup from my PC or from any file manager app on the phone.
the backup appears to be in /external_sd/media/0/TWRP/backups but I can't seem to find that folder anywhere to copy that backup folder to my PC. Is there a way to overcome this?
Yes, make your sd card portable storage.

Clear data on External Storage and Media Storage apps and reboot... Note you may have to reassign ringtone, notification tone, and alarm sounds after this.

Where do I clear data on external storage? I do not see the option to do that in the Settings. I can only clear cached data.

It's an app... Got to Settings - Apps, then Show System from the 3 dot menu and scroll down.

Tried doing that, but still cannot view that folder.

Anyways, I ended up just reformatting the SD card as portable. Seems that is the only way

I just installed Marshmallow.
SD card formatted portable, but not recognized in recovery (TWRP). So, I reformatted again as portable. Still nothing. I cleared data for media and external storage. Still nothing.
SD card shows fine on phone and PC. But nothing in TWRP.
Should I try another recovery? Did I miss something?

That's weird... Never seen that.
What version of TWRP?

I was on TWRP 3.0 ... tried several times. Lost my ENTIRE SD card after reformat (argh). Finally switched to an old Philz. Worked like a charm.
Crazy!
This is an old post but this answer might help someone now also, it tricked me for a min. In twrp when you hit backup at the bottom of the screen it says "storage" click that, then choose your SD card or internal memory for the backup.
