[Q] Black Screen of (permanent) death? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Running the rom in my sig. Downloaded and installed Wikitude world browser from the marketplace, and now I've got the black screen of death. It won't go away even after a reboot. What can I do? I haven't backed up my android in a LONG time and I'm not prepared to lose everything!! Any way I could recover it?

could try using 'android commander' to uninstall the app via the pc?

Hello,
I have a similar problem.
In my case, its truly "permanent".
I haven't installed nothing special, nor did I do anything special that could've triggered this screen of death. I just had the app LiveRadio on for less than 1 hour.
I turned off the screen with the end button, and when I pushed it again, the back lights went on, but no image at all, just black!
I googled this poblem, and tried some solutions, like turning off/on the device, taking out the battery and so on, nothing worked!
The most bizarre thing though, is that the screen is permanently black! It's always black, be it in bootloader mode, spl, mgldr, or something else, no image is displayed.
I even tried to hardreset my android soft (I managed to do it somehow), but this didn't chase away the black screen.
The screen responds though. I managed to use androidscreencast to control the device via my PC, everything works normally, touching the screen triggers the desired commands, it's just pitch black...
Do you think my screen is broken in some way? Or maybe there is a problem inside the phone, a linking issue.
Does anyone have an idea? Thank you in advance.

what you could do, as you are using your pc for doing tasks on your phone, is perform taks 29.. then flash the windows mobile rom (trough sd and rename .nbh file to LEOIMG.nbh) this way your HSPL is deleted aswel.. and then what i would do, is send it back to repair.. because i think your screen has a problem.
I don't know if you are able to do all those steps as if you have to pull down the volum (or pull up?) to proceed the windows installation when going first into the 3colored screen.

Hermes wont boot - 4 color bars - help please

Hello everyone. After some researching, this seemed like the best site to answer my question, as I have not found an answer yet.
Yesterday morning, I was running my ATT 8525 (which I believe you refer to as "hermes") just fine. I was using the internet sharing feature, and went to reset the phone. I "believe" I pressed the power button while pressing the "ptt- push to talk" - button. The phone turned off, and when I turned the phone back on, rather than loading like it normally did, I got a new screen.
The screen has 4 color bars. A red bar at the top, then a green bar, then a blue bar, and last, a white bar of color on the bottom. Each bar takes up 1/4 of the screen and runs horizontally. At the top, the phone says, in white text:
HERM100
1PL-1.04
HERM100
SPL-2.03
At the bottom of the screen, in the white bar of color, in black text, it says
SERIAL
Now, when I press the power button to turn the phone off, nothing happens. I have to remove the battery to shut off the power. If I plug in a USB cable, the SERIAL text changes to USB. If I press the top two buttons, the one above window and the one above ok, while pressing the stick in to reset the phone, that screen works ok. I believe it is called a "hard reset" It asks if I want to erase all data and restore factory settings, and if so, press r. I press R on the keyboard, and the screen then says reset complete, press space. I press space and then I am back to the screen with 4 color bars. Nothing else I have tried works either. I have been stuck on this screen with 4 color bars since yesterday.
I took my cell phone in to ATT to be looked at and the sales people at the store say that I am 7 days past my warranty, and that they can't/won't repair the phone, but they would be happy to sell me a brand new one... for several hundred dollars.
So, the folks on the internet are my last hope =( If anyone reading this knows anything, even if it is a link to another site or something, that may help me resolve this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. If not, I at least thank you for your time reading my post.

Oh, as an additional thought, if it helps, I have not used any of these :baked: roms or any such thing. I bought my phone and used it as is. The one and only change I ever did to my phone was I followed ATT's steps on upgrading from Windows Mobile 5 to Windows Mobile 6, if I remember their names correctly. Hope this helps.
Bootloader. This is the name of the screen according to my research.
"Is your device able to boot Windows Mobile OS?
This one is easy: If can you see your today screen and use your phone as a PDA means you can boot OS. If you only see the splash screen, bootloader screen (tri-color) or windows mobile splash screen you can't boot OS."
Got this from the thread at
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Unbrick
So, I guess I am stuck at the bootloader screen.
Try a Hard reset - hold both soft keys and reset with stylus. Hold in until it asks to reset to factory (whatever). Press "r" on the slideout keyboard and then space. You should go back throught the setup PPC steps.
YOU WILL LOOSE ALL INFORMATION ON YOUR HERMES...This is unescapable as you would any other way you tried to recover your Hermes too.
I suggest if you get it working to install Hard SPL V7 (makes recovery easier) and also pim backup so you can restore all your contacts/messages if something goes wrong again.
Cheers... & good luck.
I have tried hard resetting many times, and it does not work. It says that it succeeds and that factory settings have been restored, and then I am back to the bootloader screen. I have been to the wiki on bricked hermes phones and recovering from a brick. From that, I ascertain I have a type 2 bricked phone (goes directly to bootloader screen). I tried the MTTY tool, and it says that the NAND write was successful on both commands, but, I am still stuck at bootloader screen. I have since tried installing a few different roms, even in SSLL and HARDSPL modes, and nothing has worked.
What I have not tried is the JPIN fix, as I am not an engineer and don't have the tools or knowledge on how to do that. I also don't know how to do the microsoft operating system download fix (using an emulator?)
** UPDATE **
I think it might have been the mtty commands, but I took the battery out overnight, and when I put the battery back in to try the KITL attempt, the phone booted up and started to do the config. I was happy and thought that the phone was fixed, but when it was done with the configurating the phone, it reset back into boot loader screen -_-
You may need to check for bad blocks. This sometimes causes the problems you descibe as well as spontaneous Hard Resets and occasional soft resets.
Do a search for "how to fix bad blocks hermes" and you should get the info you need...
Hope this helps...

Black Screen

I just realized that my phone was like... dead. It turns on and I can synch with it in windows, but the screen is completly black and without image. I can receive calls. Before this I was not able to turn it on. Then it turned on and showed something like ChipID error, then it went black until now. When I plug it to the computer it doesn't seem to be charging (no orange light) I have hardspl in it. Also I didn't do anything special with it, I simply foud the phone like that today, it has been weeks since I flashed a rom or something. Any ideas?

Could be a faulty screen. Have you tried a hard reset
Yeah, I also did some hard resets. I think the screen got damaged at some point when I was unable to turn on the phone. Eventually when it worked it showed some weird error after startup in a message box. After this allways black screen (and no backlit and orange light of charge), also reflashed because the thing is working, it vibrates on startup (after 25 seconds) and plays the htc tune, it enters windows mobile too and I can receive calls but it keeps it all black.
I contacted the customer support of the online store, I will simply ask for a repair or replacement.
Thanks.

HELP desire z screen wont turn on

Hi everyone, I got my desireZ back in November and it has been working perfect ever since, i have it rooted using VISIONary and everything was perfect until today. The phone was in my pocket and i was lsning to music, i looked at my phone and all i saw was a white line going from the top of the screen to the bottom, i pressed the power button to turn of the screen, then i pressed it again and now all I see is a black screen with the back light on.
I have tried to soft reset the phone, took out the battery sim card and left the phone for a while, came back turned it on and still the same thing black screen with the back light on... The touch screen works fine i still hear the phone receiving txt msges and emails, i can even receive phone calls, and answer them by sliding my finger across the screen like usual.
I am trying to do a hard reset of the phone but i can't do that cause even when i turn on the phone while holding the volume down key i still dont see anything on the screen
any help would be appreciated.
EDIT - after trying to open the keyboard a couple of times, now the screen turns on white... when i press the power button to turn of the screen and turn it back i see a fading effect where the screen slowly turn on from left to right (fades from black to white) and then stays white till i press the power button again....
Since i have rooted my phone, i dont belive i can take it to bell to fix it the way it is... and since i can't see the screen to perform a hard reset to remove the root (i dont have s-off) ... does anyone know of another method for doing this? maybe with connecting to a computer?

There is another thread on the forums about someone having the same issue. I believe there is a solution using adb on your PC to connect to the phone.
Not sure how 'tight' your service provider is, but if the screen is dead, and you are still under your warranty period, they may simply swap the device for you after doing some 'basic' tests and dump it into the bucket that goes back to the factory for refurb. The fact that it is rooted won't be discovered until much later, if ever, so it may not be an issue.
Good luck!

Any idea on the location of this thread, can't find it anywhere.
I am suffering the exact symptoms as the OP with my Desire Z which is rooted with visionary rom flashed - I would really like to know how to use adb to resolve this !

Screen turning itself off when I slide it in

Hey guys, I jsu bought a used G1, since I needed a phone because I've started developing apps for android. Anyhow, since I don't have much money I had to buy a used one.
So this one has a (quite big) problem - when the screen is on the keyboard (normal position) the screen turns off. You can see the backlight, but nothing else. When the screen is slid out, it works perfectly fine.
Any idea what the problem may be?
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
It can be a problem with the ROM also can be a hardware problem.. Try another ROM first and report back.
I tried more than 3 roms, still does the same.
I also filmed how it turns itself off:

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but have you tried wiping?
Yup, more than once.
At this point, if it was my phone, I'd consider breaking out a screwdriver set and try to see if something came loose or is worn.
Well now it's not working at all.
Not even when the screen is slid out.
And I don't have the required screws to open it... Guess I'll have to buy them somewhere :/
EDIT:
This is weird.. I somehow managed to turn it on, but now it's stuck on a black screen with "Build: " at the bottom of it...
EDIT2:
And now when I rebooted it, only the backlight turns on...
EDIT3:
When I turn it on regularly, the T-Mobile G1 screen appears and then disappears. You can still see the backlight, but nothing else happens.
When I turn it on to recovery mode, the G1 screen appears, then disppaears and then you can see a black screen with "Build: " at the bottom.
EDIT4:
Apparently, when I start it regularly, it does boot into Android, but it's like stuck.. Seems like it's kinda bricked? No idea.
EDIT5:
Is it possible to reinstall the ROM without having access to the recovery menu?

Getting a set of screwdrivers/torx/etc is a good idea. I picked mine up on eBay awhile back. An investment every techy guy should make.
It also sounds like you may want to get acquainted with adb and particularly fastboot. You *should* be able to use fastboot to get a working recovery and then use the recovery to get a rom loaded. This: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719 seems like a decent guide to get you going with what you need if it is in fact a software issue.
Since your experience keeps deteriorating, I'm beginning to wonder if a chip inside is going bad - especially with the odd things like "Build: " showing up. (Let's hope this is not the case!) Nevertheless, I think I'd start with fastboot and go from there. Good luck.
Thanks a lot, ill try it as soon as I get home.

EDIT1:
What the hell? All I did was delete the recovery (didn't even install a new one, kept on saying it's missing the file, even though I did move it using adb push) and now suddenly Android works normally.
EDIT2:
Well now it's stuck again, just like before deleting the recovery...
I'll try to reflash the recovery and then see what happens.

Dead Lumia 520, screen is damaged, help needed.

I have obtained a water damaged Lumia 520. I opened it up and dried it while also clearing any oxidation from the various contact points. The phone displayed the bolt+gear icon on screen but the screen kept flashing and fading. I figured the phone needed the firmware to be reflashed so I downloaded the software recovery tool and it detected the phone and flashed the firmware without error. Then the phone actually worked albeit with a black screen, I could hear the little noises and stuff so it was working under the black screen. I figured that maybe the screen could be salvaged by cleaning the contacts and letting it dry up completely, but after I put the phone together it wouldn't work anymore at all, it basically turns on for a few seconds and turns itself off. The software recovery finds it and I can reflash the firmware but it still doesn't work. I tried checking all the internal connectors but now there doesn't seem to be any way to make it work even with the dead screen.
Is there something I need to touch on screen to make it work? I never had a Windows Phone so I don't really know and I can't see the screen. And do you geniuses know what might be wrong with it and how can I tell if it's just the LCD that has been killed by the water or if the motherboad might be FUBAR as well? What could be causing it to turn off after a few seconds? The battery is definitely not dead as I left it to charge for a long time.
Actually I just managed to "fix" it. The screen comes on after I cleaned the contacts and messed with it a bit, it just looks really bad and it's full of line but I can see what's on screen and use the phone. My issue now is that the bolt+gear icon appears at every reboot and doesn't go away. The only way I have to boot the phone normally is to hold camera and volume down after I reboot it. What does this mean? Other than that the phone seems to be working perfectly once it actually boots.
I just managed to bring it back to life completely. Screen contacts were water damaged but I managed to get them working again and now the screen is perfect. It kept getting stuck on the bolt+gear icon after every reboot because the volume+ button was stuck but I managed to unstuck it and now the phone is perfect. So yeah if you have a flashing screen after water damage check the contacts, if your phone doesn't boot and keeps getting stuck on that icon try to unstuck the volume+ button.
