Japan E-Mobile HTC Aria (S31HT) users thread - HTC Aria General

Hi all,
this is my first post here at XDA Developers and I wanted to create this thread to serve as a meeting point and information repository for all HTC Aria (S31HT) users living in Japan and using E-Mobile as their provider.
I just bought a non-Japanese HTC Aria (oops, as it turns out; wrong frequency support as E-Mobile uses symmetric 1700MHz!) and plan to shortly move to the E-Mobile network with one of their Arias, in order to use the tethering capability they provide for tablets such as the iPad2, Xoom and other wifi capable devices.
It was in finding out more about the Aria I already bought that I came to this forum trying to find out how to root my phone. The Aria I bought shipped with Android 2.2 and HBOOT 1.02 which meant I had no luck in rooting it via software methods.
So I have just ordered an XTC Clip device in order to hardware root my Aria (and any subsequent HTC compatible phones I buy).
I will make this service available to other Japanese users of XTC Clip compatible HTC phones, once I have successfully rooted my own phones and am comfortable with the process. In order not to upset the forum mods, if you want to avail yourself of this service (once I'm offering it) please send me an email privately for further instructions.
Once I root my Aria I plan to begin testing CM7 on it and providing useful instructions to other Japan-based Aria users on the best apps, settings and builds to use to have a good experience on the E-Mobile network.
Feel free to chime in and add your own experiences and tips so we can make this a locus for Japanese Aria development and information for everyone to avail themselves of.
I look forward to meeting you all, and thanks for such a fantastic resource XDA Developers!
Cheers from Tokyo,
visceralpsyche
Update 15 May 2011 - My XTC Clip arrived and I successfully rooted the Aria and installed CyanogenMod7 plus an updated radio stack on it. If anyone in Japan wants their HTC smartphone rooted to S-OFF please contact me via PM for more info.

I will update this post as I discover new additions to make the Japanese HTC Aria experience as good as it can be. Feel free to suggest other apps by posting their names and descriptions in this thread.
Recommended Apps (title of app in red)
Japanese keyboard support - OpenWnn plus (free)
English keyboard - SwiftKey (paid)
CPU speed governor (great for prolonging battery life) - SetCPU (paid)
Train timetables (great front end for online database) - Japan Trains (free)
Japanese/English dictionary - JED (free)
QR Code reader - Barcode Scanner (free)
Translation - Google Translate (free)
Earthquake Early Warning - Namazu Alert (free)
Batch command processing (make your phone do anything in any order) - Tasker (paid)

I received my XTC Clip the other day and have successfully rooted my non-Japanese Aria (which had HBOOT 1.02 on it). Transitioning to HBOOT 0.57 via first flashing the original AT&T ROM, I'm now running CyanogenMod7 nightly build 78 on it and have also flashed the radio firmware to the latest 47.63.35.21U_7.16.35.11 from this thread.
Loving the new CyanogenMod7! I'm now in the process of figuring out all the best software and keyboard apps for Japan and the more advanced stuff like CPU clocking etc.
The next thing is to get an E-Mobile version of the HTC Aria, figure out the differences (especially the radio which seems unique to the Japanese market unless anyone knows differently), then do the same procedure.

I could root my aria(E-mobile) with Xtc Clip.
I'm using CM7 now. It's wonderful!!

Yes, CyanogenMod7 is amazing compared to the stock HTC Sense isn't it! Am following the nightlies closely to see how close we are to 7.1. I have a feeling it won't be long....

I could use NTT Docomo SIM with my rooted ARIA(emobile).

Thread will be stickied for the time being

Thanks for the sticky Orb3000!
Hopefully this can become the goto place for all Japanese HTC Aria owners to discuss rooting their phones and using them to their fullest.
With the latest nightly of CM7 I'm getting awesome battery life (3-4 days!). I was in Yodobashi Camera recently with a friend (showing them the Aria) and helped the E-Mobile staff diagnose a connection problem with the store's wifi hotspot! Used my Aria and the Wifi Analyzer app to figure out the least crowded frequency to use for them.... the guy was amazed and quite curious about CM7 being on the phone!

Interesting.. I am also in Japan and been using the Aria. Been dying to root it.

The newly released AlphaRevX beta should work on your phone:

Just a quick update - I'm currently testing my old Softbank iPhone Black USIM in my HTC Aria and it appears to work with the "smile.world" APN. I get the proper 3G or H icons depending on my location and my @i.softbank.jp email appears to work fine (IMAP based). Briefly used tethering with my iPad to confirm it works - yes, it does
Will do more comprehensive tests in the next few days and report back again. Going to keep a close eye on the bill to make sure I'm not getting screwed out of my pakehoudai plan from my iPhone.... but from other reports I imagine I'll be fine. Still better safe than sorry!

What version Hboot is on the Japanese HTC Aria?

To be clear, I'm currently using a non-Japanese Aria. But I did go and check the Japanese E-Mobile Aria in the store to see what HBOOT version it had. It had HBOOT 1.02 on it and Android 2.2. I also noted its radio version ends in .13 whereas my Aria (from Hong Kong) ends in .11 (probably because the E-Mobile Aria needs to support the 1700MHz band which the Hong Kong version doesn't support).
Anyway, I've attached a photo I took of the E-Mobile Aria bootloader screen in the store, along with two snapshots of my own Aria running with my old iPhone Softbank USIM in it.
So far so good - it shows the SoftBank provider logo on the lock screen, shows both the 3G and HSPDA icons depending on reception area, handles SMS and MMS perfectly with no additional setup and finally, handles the i.softbank.jp address without issue through K-9. Only small issue appears to be lack of PUSH support for that account at the server end, however it DOES pop up the SMS alert like on the iPhone to let you know a message has arrived, so it's not a big deal (and I don't use my i.softbank.jp address for much since I have my own domains). This is all using the smile.world APN which automatically shows up as one of two APN options when the SoftBank USIM is installed (first time you need to select it, after that it remains on it).
For now I may not even need to go to E-Mobile, depending on the next few days' testing to make sure I don't lose my 'pakehoudai' status and that tethering my iPad doesn't cause any wrinkles! That said, I plan to keep this thread for all Aria users in Japan regardless of carrier, so I'll keep posting new info and asking others to add to the info repository when they can!
Cheers,
visceralpsyche

Sorry, I should mention my current build info too for clarity as to what I'm running:
CyanogenMod7 nightly 111
drowningchild kernel 8.7 BFS (using smartass2 with 806/245Mhz)
Radio firmware update 7.16.35.11
+ Google apps package

Paul,
Thanks for the lead on AlphaRevX. It was only today that I finally had the time to meddle with it and it looks like a success to me:
1. Used AlphaRevX on my EMOBILE Japanese HTC Aria to get the S-OFF
2. Used Revoked tool to flash the custom recovery.
I am now free! Rooted.
Now, comes the question which ROM to install. I guess I should be careful here with the radio versions, right?
Any recommendations or should I just go with the CM7?
Thanks.
Oren

My pick would be what I'm running in my sig - the latest CM7 nightly for the Aria along with drowningchild's latest kernel.
One thing to note is that the radio firmware I'm using is for my Hong Kong Aria, which has different radio bands to the E-Mobile Aria (I'm missing symmetric 1700MHz). So I'd stick with the radio firmware that your handset shipped with for now.
Hope this helps!
Cheers

Last q. Do you know if there is a package or where I can find the emobile APNs? I seems to find only 2 on the net, but I remember that I had like 5-6 APNs on the emobile STOCK.
I have the stock backup, maybe I can extract the APNs from there?

Yeah, just load up your backup, and write down the APNs listed.

Hi,
I have the emobile APN's. Used APN backup tool to extract the APN in XML format. Will PM you the file when I get home.

Copy protected apps missing from the Market on Orange UK Hero?

Anybody else noticed this? I have an unmodified Hero I got straight from Orange and the Market seems to be missing a lot of paid applications, the ones that use copy protection.

Searching the Market for the apps mentioned on the earlier link, I can confirm that I can see some, but not all of them, an a T-Mobile G2.
I also noticed that I hadn't downloaded "DocumentsToGo" back onto my G1 (thought I had!) and when I tried it, I got the "Download Unsuccessful" message.
Regards,
Dave
I'm also missing apps on my T-Mobile G2. Can anyone else out there see the "Jack FM Live" app?
Nope I can't see that app.
The app I am missing is Battle for Mars. I have done the rounds ringing Orange and HTC to try and sort this out. Orange were fairly useless but finally just referred me over to HTC. HTC tried to claim there were different apps for different phones, but the example I gave them was Battle for Mars Lite was available, the paid for version was not available. They are meant to be ringing me back in 3-5 working days !?!! I will try and keep this thread posted. If anyone else has some news or can hassle Orange/HTC as well, I think that can only be a good thing and might push someone into sorting this mess out.
I can't find taskiller full - the free version is there but I want the one which has the full exclusion list. I've been in touch with the developer and he can see it in the market in France, although he thought that it may be due to waiting for google to review his account.
Guess it may actually be a similar problem to this. It's really frustrating because I would love to pay for the full version!
I've just got an unlocked hero that im using on o2. I can see the apps that others cannot, so maybe it's a network problem or related to the 'tinkering' networks like to do to phones before sending them.

That is really annoying - I can only see the free version using wireless or mobile data (standard T-Mobile G2 Touch, no root, not unlocked etc.). I'll let the developer know, it's really unfair that people who want to buy his app can't.
I can now see Taskiller full and Bluex which i havn't been able to see since i bought my hero, i have the Orange version of the phone.
checked earlier in the day and couldn't see taskiller full. I can now... I assume some back-end setting's been changed (whether it was a taskiller-full-specific thing the author did, or something google did centrally, I don't know)
Still can't see it on T-Mobile!

Same problems here, its really annoying. I really want the Bloo facebook app. The new 1.3 version is meant to be good .
Also on the topic of not being able to get stuff on this "open source OS".. WHERE is amazon mp3 uk . Can't take much for amazon/google to just shift the same program to access the uk mp3 store lol.
can confirm bloo 1.3a showing up for me(orange)
the guy who did http://www.cyrket.com/ mentioned apps appeared and disappeared due to sdk version checking. while i assume that isn't the issue here, maybe it's the same kind of thing? the hero's listed capabilities and the app's metadata are incompatible?
(tho why that would change just because it's sold by orange instead of t-mobile I don't know)

HTC aria 2.2.2 update review

So I decided I'd give the new official update for the HTC aria a shot despite all the talk about not being able to root it yet. So far some pretty important things I've noticed is the fact that there is no sideloading. I saw someone on here say that it would be able to sideload - incorrect. The second big thing is the fact that it does not have the touchpad button wake. You have to use the power button which is a huge flaw for me. Someone also said that it would be capable of overclocking- as far as I know right now I don't think you can, but I can't be 100% sure yet because of the lack of sideloading and the 4.99 for setcpu. Some of the cool new features I do like is the mobile hotspot capabilities, live wallpapers, and the market update. So now I want to see what others have to say about it. Please come tell me what you've found!

I want to understand ..
The updates are made automatically?
If I purchased from ebay the device in 3 / 3 and it had not arrived yet, am I expected to see within 2.2 and unable to root?

Did you purchase a used phone? Was it already rooted? Did the seller install the latest update from HTC/AT&T?
The 2.2 update from at&t is not an Over-the-air (OTA) update. It's offered by at&t via the HTC web site. The update, therefore, takes work on the user's part. It's not automatic.
That said, if you purchase a phone from eBay that is factory fresh from at&t, it's possible it already has the 2.2 update - I put the odds at 50%.
For what it's worth, the only thing wrong with the stock build of this device's ROM is the at&t bloatware/crapware. Other than that, it's a solid device, and there are ways to customize the phone to your liking.

At first my phone felt quick when it was processing, but initial response to screen presses felt slightly laggy. I was concerned. But after running it for a few weeks now, without a task killer, it feels like quite a quick more featured phone. Seems like there was a calibration and optimization duration there. Maybe it's in my head? Very happy with the upgrade, especially for apps to SD!
Oh, and add gingerbread keyboard from the market and the phone is twice as good!

You can do side loading by using android injector. You can find it at at harmonyhollow or softpedia. Just type in Android Injector at google. It also allows you to install multiple apps at the same time.

How do you get Apps to SD to work on this rom?
In the past I was using Darktremor's a2sd preinstalled on the Liberated Aria roms.
I am now on the Liberated version of the rom (thanks to Gene Poole - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970272), but I don't know how to do apps2sd here. I have my sdcard partitioned with ext3 (512 Mb), but it's not getting used automatically.

Just saw this tweet a few minutes ago.
Looks like we're in line for an update next month. With the Telstra OTAs I don't really care too much (unless we see something unique in this OTA, which I doubt). But at least for the majority of people who aren't flashing SBFs there's a glimmer of hope.
Any idea what the update will include? Hopefully getting rid of the cap.
My Atrix is working rather well, sometimes these updates do more bad than good.
I knew mid-may was way too early but next month is alright I guess.
Not too late at all...2 months after everybody else is awesome!
Hopefully we'll might get our first "Official Stock SBF" to fall back on out of that...

A software update is now available for the Bell version of the Motorola Atrix!
- To download the update manually:
Go to Menu > Settings > About Phone > Software Update
- I'm not sure what the size of the update file is, but I would suggest downloading it over WiFi as opposed to the Bell network so you don't exceed your data allowance and incur extra charges.
- Ensure that your phone is at least 50% charged before attempting the update. Idealy, charge it beyond 50% to be safe.
-- The updated version is v37.23 and brings Android Froyo up to version 2.2.2, and contains numerous updates:
Upload Data Speed
Increased upload speed at which data can travel on the network.
Data and Voice Connection
Improvements to prevent interruptions to data and voice connection.
Screen
Improvements to prevent screen from freezing.
Skype
Improvements to call audio function so it is easier for the person you called to hear you. Please note this application is not pre-loaded on phone, but is available for download from Android Market.
Wi-Fi
Increased functionality by enabling Yahoo Email to be sent over a Wi-Fi connection.
Display
Improved International Roaming Warning Message by simplifying user notification so that it only appears on the screen when you move to a new network.
Happening Widget
Improved Happenings Widget to ensure that you receive the latest updates across the social networks you are connected to such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter.
Calling
Improvements were made to incoming and outgoing call functionality to ensure a more seamless experience
Expanded Language Support for Webtop
Accented character support within Webtop application.
Improved Support for POP/SMTP Email
Support for SMTP outgoing servers that do not require authentication
Improved Exchange Performance
Improved Exchange Email/Calendar/Contacts performance
Hopefully someone will post the file or download location on here. for those that made the leap to another stock rom.
Coming in very slowly. I didnt catch how bit it was...
Upload speed fixed, SWEET. I hate being gimped.

Personally, I've got way too much on my phone to be brave enough to install the update without hearing some confirmations from others first that it's a problem free update
As far as I know, no data is supposed to be lost during the updates... but... well, you know....
I'm kind of scared, my atrix is working very well.

LauncherPro seems to be smoother....still playing with it.

[WORKAROUND] Bypassing Tmobile's Anti Tethering Policy

Recently Tmobile finally started filtering their data and are attempting to prevent all users no matter the ROM or software on the phones from tethering their laptop to the phone.
As soon as you tether and try to view a webpage on your laptop, you will get redirected to a sales page, where TMobile tells you that you need to purchase an additional feature for $15 USD a month. This is outrageous considering you already pay for a certain ammount of data per month, and as long as you remain within that they are just being greedy and are nickle and diming us.
The workarounds / bypass are detailed here:
http://benbuchacher.com/posts/2012/06/bypassing-tmobiles-tethering-filters.html
Using CyanogenMod 9 I tether just fine...
This just started today for me Ive tethered since cupcake just fine.. There are other reports too using Cyanogenmod or any other ROM will not help you when this rolls out to your area.

Cm9 here too, still blocked though
We ran into this problem several months ago but were using the LG Optimus T phone for tethering. It ran fine for a day or so and then we started getting the Tmobile message screen to upgrade. We had plenty of gigs left and couldnt figure out why we could no longer tether. We are heading on vacation next month and this will hopefully help us bypass Tmobile's junk. Haven't tried our Galaxy S2's yet so we may be worried all for nothing..
UPDATE: Tethering works great on the S2 thru Tmobile,.,,Hotspot does not. Got a screen on my phone for Tmobile to sign up for it monthly when I searched the Help link...laptop is asking for a Network Key to access the Hotspot...
Try the ClockworkMod tethering app.

HOW DO I TUNNEL!?!?!??!
I didn't have any trouble using USB or wifi tethering on my bone stock galaxy nexus, but they might not have rolled this system out back then. This is definitely good information though, the wife wants to use this when we're out on business.

You need a Virtual Private Network or VPN. I can't post links so you'll have to look it up yourself.
So I have a question for you guys...
I understand that I need to switch the user agent on my laptop when tethering, but what about when I tether to something like a Roku box or a Playstation 3?
The reason why only some people are having problems with the tethering is because T-Mobile is including hidden APN settings in the new software updates and the software on new devices. These hidden APNs helps T-Mobile detect tethering. Go to this thread to see what I mean, also you can PM the OP and he can tell you exactly what he had to do, I think he had to decompile the framwork, apk or framwork.jar one and remove them from there I can not remember exactly.
Edit:

I will gladly discuss it here... Both Elegancia 3.0.0 and version B of my rom are using resources from 3.32.401.105 in order to achieve two functions:
1. Unlock APNs
2. Provide leedroid tweak compatibility
The only problem with this is the fact that they are no longer "true tmous builds". I refer to them as "franken-builds"... I have not gone through all the differences between framework-res, systemui, framework.jar, services.jar, etc... but I can tell you that certain small bugs have been reported with the xe build that others have reported as fixed in the official tmous version.
The APNs are written to apns.xml within the framework-res.apk. This is why we used XE components to unlock the APNs at first. You can distinguish what roms are built this way by the framework version:
TMOUS: 20120412.202737
XE: 20120321.232857
My unlocking mod is the stock TMOUS framework-res.apk, but it has the apns.xml from XE. This ensures that the rest of the rom stays in tact and that no bugs will be induced by mixed resources... I've also included this mod as an option during install on version A of my rom.

Just so I am clear...the way T-Mobile is doing this is by seeing the user agent of the browser. Since I tether my Galaxy Tab Wifi to my Gnex from time to time I should be in the clear correct? Since I am not using a browser on a laptop, but rather on another Android device.
Thanks for the post, will try this out
Wait...so what if I use a desktop user agent from a mobile browser to grab the full page. That's going to get blocked as well...?
I got that problem with my new Galaxy S2... luckily the rom I flashed took care of that problem.

Just tested. It works on almost all of the UserAgents becauses Chrome/IE/FireFox.. Hell IPad even works. You should be fine for now. I hope they stick to this solution instead of going to more preventive measures because this is easily bypassed.. My Skype/Steam/Trillian/AIM/etc all still connect perfectly even without bypassing because it's only blocking Desktop useragents. The stupidest part of this is requesting the desktop version of sites like on the Google Chrome Android browser results in the blocked page as well.. :|
Nexus S Stock
I have a Nexus S and I have gotten all my updates are via T-mobile OTA updates, however I have never had a problem tethering.

None of your updates have been from T-Mobile. All those OTA updates came straight from Google. One of the things that ended with the nexus s was that the carriers weren't allowed to really touch the phone at all. As such, T-Mo never sold it in their stores. You could get it at Best Buy, etc, but not at official stores.
I believe this only works if you bought the device from T-mobile right? since i can tether on my iPhone just fine (althought on 2G/EDGE) I can't confirm it with android though, but if they are ruling this all over the network we're gonna have a bad time.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is with T-Mo-sourced devices specifically (as in, you got it at the T-Mo store or it has the T-Mo logo on the phone itself).
Also, nice South Park reference. ".....you're gonna have a BAD time!"

New Softbank Rom: 369

Totally out of left field: dell released a new rom for softbank.
The changelog does not seem to state much.
Android 2.2.2
Build date: Jul 10, 2012
Build: 29579
Dell Stage 1.6
The rom is completely identical to 366 except for the following files:
<root>\boot.img
<root>\amss.mbn
<root>\dbl.mbn
<root>\dsp1.mbn
<root>\osbl.mbn
<root>\system\build.prop
<root>\system\app\quickoffice.apk
Out of all those, only boot.img seems to have changed more then just being resigned/trivial changes.
Dell normally holds a rom for 1 month to test before releasing, but the normal release date for a rom built in july would be mid/late august.
So for whatever reasons: they held it back for a month.
It also only includes a trivial amount of changes, so it's not much more then going though the motions of a release
I received the update SMS today and came here to check. Figured you would have some additional info on this.
Still Froyo? I guess I'm never getting a phone from Softbank again.
Blame Dell/Qisda's dell team/Softbank
The SPro's still on GB too.
The Lenovo LePad S2005 (ie the "Opus one") got ICS back in April.
I dont even know why they released 369, I cant tell if it even changed anything as far as softbank's changelog is concerned.

maybe the user or the dev is old school type .. and pretty much on comfort zone...
Official roms arnt custom roms, they cant simply release it and hope there's no serious issues. They have to have staff on hand to test for 3 weeks before releasing.
Even if they only changed like a dozen lines of code at best for it.

The package is supposed to fix Wifi issues with access points.
Package name is streak_29579_12.pkg
Has anyone tried this?

I currently sport the Dell official 360 rom and I was wondering if it was worth the bother of udating to this one? has anyone given it a go and does it work?
Any pointers would be appreciated! Also interested in whether it requires a complete reset or if it upgrades leaving data/apps in place? :fingers-crossed:

Any time you flash a DELL update.pkg it's going to do a factory reset.
TheManii may put together a zip package for it though

rom: 2.5 gb
are we going to get an official ics as we had before from olleh an official gb ??
2.5gb is 500mb nand + 2gb innerSD.
I dont expect them to ever make official ICS.
Even 2.3.5+ isnt something I'd expect.

Has anyone installed this yet? Does it improve wifi performance and is it ok in the UK? I hate being the first at these things!!
Well I took the plunge and generally I am pleased with the results. Wifi seems much more stable and most things work, although mms does not seem to be working at the moment. Also softbank does not come with a sms app pre-installed, instead they use their own combined messaging app which I have not tried yet. I installed an sms app from the market and it works ok, apart from mms

The MMS issue I was having was me being an idiot - I had run out of credit I have never used Wifi Hotspot. There is an app that comes rolled into this rom which seems to be for tethering but i have not used it. The WiFi in general is excellent and seem way more stable that any other ROM I've used to date (and I've used quite a few). I think it may be easier to look up a 3rd party (barnacle I think) tool to get the tethering working - but I know very little about this.

I've been using it for a while and generally all is good. It seems better on battery than the 360 rom, the WiFi seems more stable, though I do get the odd issue with it not connecting but far less than any other rom I've used. I do not use tethering and I know that is not present, but there are apps in the market to do this anyway. SuperUser.zip also happily rooted it with no issues. It does seem to be quicker than other Froyo roms too - so overall I'd say it's worth an upgrade. Be aware that the native messaging app will not work on it for some reason, but Handsent or Go SMS are just fine and dandy - unless you run out of credit (see earlier post by me)
If I had to stick to a single rom this would be the one. I am tempted to go for DSC and I've been told by the author that it can be flashed over this rom - so I may report back when 1.6 is rolled out fully and I've installed it to give a comparison.
I hope this helps!
I've looked and haven't found any links for what I'm looking for which is just the amss and dsp1 files to flash in fastboot... anybody got those uploaded anywhere? I hate to flash the entire ROM just to extract those two, but if I have to then I just have to... thanks guys for any help
