[Q] confused by version - Droid X General

ive been reading forums for days, ive rooted and installed bootstrap and made my back up, thx a million for all of your work in guiding me through that btw. my question is, what next? im running 2.2.1 im just wanting to make my phone faster and look at trying out the new themes or whatever i stumble upon. A Couple of guys at work seem to flash a new rom at least once a day. one is on a DINC and the other a Captivate. is the DX really that much more complicated or am i missing a crutial thread somewhere. I know pc's inside and out and very frustrated that my phone is whipping me lol. and helpful thoughts or points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated

Stick it out for a few more days until Gingerbread OTA. Better than Froyo ROMs. Then reroot and ROM.

Do NOT take the OTA if you plan on rooting or ROMming... according to P3Droid, you may not be able to do so right away. Look at this:

Well u guys just nailed part of my confusion. I had read about the upcoming release tentative for the friday the 13th but I thought that was last month my bad. So even though I wouldn't be able to root n mod right away it should be a positive improvement over 2.2.1 correct? Undoubtedly the devs will knock it out of the park shortly after its released so I could wait for root again but enjoy an update or attempt it on 2.2 and get a look alike. Think im gonna wait and try to learn all I can in the time being. Thanks again all for your info n big thanks to the devs.

Just coming over to the X from a droid incredible I can promise you the dinc is much easier to play with, and a lot more forgiving. Even with the issues I had on the dinc I'd go back to it in a heartbeat if verizon would do it.

I believe the 596 update he is talking about is the most recent gingerbread leak (4.5.596), which so far is not rootable.
All leak versions of gingerbread 591 and before are rootable and have roms in progress. Notably Apex 2.0 beta and Liberty GB v.5 (remember these are works in progess, and still need some refinement)

Since I still have nub status on these forums i will give you some direction without direct links. If you just want to theme, then you can install an update.zip through clockwork that will "deodex" apks (this makes them themeable). Then you can install any theme you want that is compatible with your rom/os through clockwork.
droidforums.net (droid x section) pretty much covers most if not all the major custom roms/themes available for the droid x. droidxforums is another great resource.
If youre looking for froyo roms, I would suggest Rubix, Liberty, or Apex.
Rubix: Super Fast and stable.
Liberty: Fast, stable and compatible with Liberty Toolbox (market app)
-Toolbox Features
1. Easy modding/themeing
2. Overclocking
3. One-step download/update to Liberty GB (only available on donate version)
4. Much more i can't even remember
Apex: Didn't use this on froyo, but i've heard nothing but good things about it. I only mention this one because i love apex for GB.
For Gingerbread...
Apex 2.0 beta: Runs as smooth as i would expect and feels more complete than Liberty GB v.4. Only issue i've found so for is a force close for battery usage under spare parts app.
Liberty GB: I tried up to v.4, but i think most current is v.5 (both of these are available through liberty toolbox). V.4 was really cool and the toolbox was partially functional, most of the stuff i cared about worked atleast. One thing i hated though was i kept getting a notification for an authentication error with one of my imap email accounts, which completely bugged the hell out of me.
TL;DR;
For you i would suggest the liberty path, since the toolbox makes it easy to theme. Also, if you're comfortable with sbf-ing then i would suggest giving liberty GB a try (if you know how to sbf, you can always get back to stock)

Let me just say that I could literally kill Verizon lol. Ok so I waited for the OTA GB. When it released ta-da I could'nt get it of course because Bootstrap blah blah so on, well came across maderstcok's awsome update zip, ran it via clockwork and bam, phone was back to stock no hassle no headache no prob. (mind you I had been sweating bullets that I would botch something and brick my phone). So now all is back and going, everything I have used provided by the Devs here and at Droid Life worked flawlessly. I am excited at this point, cleared all the cache and did all the resets as per instructed, still everything great. Went to about phone and started pulling the OTA GB. REALLY became excited when yes, it downloaded, yes it started installing and yes, it finished and rebooted my phone. ENTER THE PROBLEM lol. I get this nifty looking red M symbol instead of the Froyo white and black M. Like a kid in a candy store I still was excited, the long awaited update was finally...... wait, whats this, bootloader? I didnt tell it to go to bootloader. Hmm, ok, welp, been sitting here now for 20 minutes better go ahead and restart the phone, yay, same thing. So now heartbroken and a bit ticked off im realizing that i now have an awsome looking rock to carry around.. sbf FTW!!! I followed all the instructions and awsome, back to out of the box state. phone works, makes calls, has 3g, camera works everything good now. I have said all of this to say one thing and ask another.
#1 If we were lucky enough to have the great devs and ppl here working for Verizon, well, this organization of individuals would not even be necessary because these guys seem to do it right the first time. I cannot express my gratitude enough.
#2 Now that its back to out of the box (again) should i attempt the OTA again?
Thx in advance all!

Search here and maybe at droidforums, too. I believe the fix is a factory reset when it does that.

No thats not an option when you run into the problem i had because i could not bring up the recovery menu. Regardless of what i pressed held or tried it went straight to boot loader.

Anyone else notice the few amount of kernels and ROMs?

I have only seen one kernel.. the one posted here, works nice but are we going to start seeing more?
Same with ROMs.. there's captains, the cyanogen 5 port, which is buggy and then ozzy's. Maybe another one or two that I missed.. I was just wondering if were going to see a lot more start coming in the future? Or are we losing developers to the MOTO x? :/
I know were getting cyanogen 6 in the near future support too
And I'm not saying it has to be froyo.. just an awesome Rom, something new!
Droid Incredible Rooted!
it's still a bit soon.
what exactly are you looking for in a custom kernel? Now that we can flash a custom kernel, really the top things in my opinion are wifi-tether, VPN, undervolt/under/over clock, and thats about it...the rest of kernel pretty much works fine as is.
That's what I keep saying.. I just see the evo forum and they have a ton of stuff and hacks! Lol
Droid Incredible Rooted!
the phone had 3 roms and a kernel up the day it was rooted, and thats not impressive? i think people are forgetting the amount of work it takes to tailor an entire OS to a phone....
I know people are going to reply and say, give it time, root's still hard to come by and the reflash tool, just came out. But unfortunately, I'm starting to wonder the same as you, that the incredible is being passed over in favor of the motorola droid X. Which is a shame, cause I think the incredible's a great phone. Hope it wasn't wrong place wrong time for it, cause I'd love to see a 2.2 cyanogen 6 ROM for it...

you cant compare the evo's progression to incredibles. the evo's software was released before the phone was, hence its root being achieved before anyone even had the phone, and the result in more roms and dev for the phone..
Well, I think a few of the problems that we have are that first, the nand is not completely unlocked which is why some haven't started doing a lot of work yet, and second, while there are some excellent devs working and providing support for the Incredible, many devs are shying away from it because it is a CDMA phone and cannot be unlocked quite like a GSM phone. I love Verizon's service but I sure do miss the days of swapping my sim card between several phones.
It's coming though, I'm sure we'll see lots of roms eventually (but the important question is how many will be different).

No its been confirmed that were getting cyanogen mod 6 and future releases. So nothing to worry there. Which is probably the best Rom around, but I'd love to see others. That's all. I just hope we don't lose them to the MOTO X which would be ashame.

Seriously. Give it time its been 1 week.
Things take time - remember of course that there's a smaller userbase (devs included) for the DI than other phones and that the phone's only been rooted a week.
The way I look at it - in a week's time, I've gotten root, I've had a custom recovery, a nandroid backup, wireless tethering, 802.11n networking and an undervoltage kernel to improve battery life. I call that one pretty sweet week
Thread cleaned up. Please keep it civilized.
Probobly because half the people on this forum cant even get root because of finicky SD Cards not allowing the various methods to work
What about themes ? We need more Roms and themes please !

THIS
TBH I am coming from the Hero (waiting...so impatiently for the incredible) and of all the roms, I ended up getting back to the basic root as above here.
rom chasing...
I had a G-1 Dream and the devs were churning out roms right and left. I do remember it starting very slowly at first and 1 or 2 devs. Hero and a couple others. and then everybody and his brother got on board. Same with the ppc apache. Off we went chasing the latest revision of our favorite devs build. It will happen here as well. It seems slow, but we are at the very forefront and on a platform that is a bit more difficult than the dream. Give it time and give yourself some patience. And definatly give these guys your support as they start to churn out a new batch of software. Don't give them a bunch of winy impatient user base that they would end up tiring of developing for and end up feeling that we are ungrateful. Hell I cant even root mine yet and kinda gave up for awhile until an easier, surer way is found and the nand thing is solved. And wow is it so much easier to come in and read the posts and not get so caught up into the hype and the sometimes disappointment involved with this whole process. I chased roms through a few platforms and finally learned to relax and let it happen. What a difference it is from chasing them down...

I tried all the other ROMS out there and if functionality is what you're looking for, I would stick with the ICE Glacier rom. Everything works and its fast! I use to switch up rom's everyday but always go back to Ice. No wifi issues, FFC works, navi and all that good stuff. I ran CM6 for a week but it was still missing some of the functions. Ill probably rum CM7 when everything works. You cant go wrong with the Glacier Rom. Just install ADW or LPP and customize it to your liking.

Oh..make sure you do a backup and wipe data, wipe cache before flashing it. You probably already know that.
one more quick question, any way to get rid of all that [email protected] blue lol, id prefer a unthemed rom...also have you ever ran evil 4g hd v0.2.2-1.72.405.3??

just install the unthemed version
unthemed links on the forum are dead
Im not to fond of the blue also. I just installed the "unthemed" version and use LPP as a launcher. I might be in the minority but I like the Sense UI over plain froyo, I like the functions, dialer, widgets . Heres a screenie of what I'm running at the moment. Hope this helps...

Dload it directly from your phone. The ROM will be in the dowload folder when its finished. Flash the file from there. You cant dlaod it from a PC, it gives a blank page but the download should work directly on your MT4G.
I have to agree 100% w/ Lakeshow423. Once I installed ClockworkMod Recovery and flashed a new recovery, I was going to try out CM6, Gorilla's, Ice, etc.
I went with Ice Glacier first, after reading everyone's positive reviews. That and it's still the HTC Sense UI, which I wanted. I used a G1 for years so I've had plenty of the vanilla Android experience.
Also, I am not experiencing any issues downloading the latest (1.1.4) release @...

I actually installed the themed version first, thinking I'd like the cool blue trim/accents. It actually ended up being a bit much for me and I found myself longing for the unthemed version. I couldn't be happier with this ROM. For those looking to "keep things the same," but want to get more speed, a better user experience and a bit better battery life (via SetCPU), I think Ice Glacier is the wiener.
Add to that, the devs working on it - teamsilence and NOTXEL21 - have been nothing but nice and quick to release updates. The ROMs are pretty much near perfect. There was an issue in 1.1.3 with WiFi hotspot (an issue w/ the included kernel) and they pretty much immediately released, 1.1.4 with a fix (downgraded kernel). Add to that, the devs are already "teasing" Gingerbread. Please, do not take this as, "shlongwoodian said they're releasing a Gingerbread ROM." I'm not saying that at all. I'm just saying these two devs seem like cool guys and they're doing great work...and I'll stick with them for updates, not TMO or HTC.
I like Sense, so I wasn't looking to theme/mod my interface too much. I think my "almost-standard-issue" home screen is quite sexy, if you ask me...
Going to Ice Glacier is the best thing you can do for your HTC Glacier. I can't stress enough, to do a Titanium backup first (verify it too) and then before flashing/deleting or doing ANYTHING in recovery, do a Nandroid backup first!

Yep, Cyanogen is Sense-less and will give you the vanilla Android feel.
Hands down, Ice Glacier is where it's at, IMHO. Our employee wanted vanilla and tried Cyanogen - he ended up back at Ice Glacier.
It all comes down to personal preference, both with the ROM itself and the dev(s). I get a good feel from both with Ice Glacier.
The good thing is, you can try em all! Make a Nandroid, try and if ya don't like, flash another ROM.
Those iPhone girlies don't have that luxury.
[[[Ice Glacier beats Rock ~ via XDA App]]]
I like the phone exactly as it comes from T-Mobile. All I wish I could do is remove stuff I don't use like news, stocks, and some of the games. I would also like to do screen shots, and it wouldn't hurt if it were faster, maybe load different themes. Aside from that, I like everything as its meant to be and find this blue to be quite annoying.

[ROM] 666th Sense V1.1 - Retro (2.1) - 7/17/2011

I've decided to run it Retro for a little bit. This is a 2.1 Sense ROM based on the March 2011 OTA for the HTC Eris. As of right now everything seems to be working very smoothly. The Rom is default O/C at 710400 with on demand governor. Min CPU speed default is at 19200. You can easily change the cpu speeds and governors with setcpu or Conaps CPUBoost. I've also went ahead and changed the kernel to zanfurs kernel by popular request. If you want to use Conaps it can be flashed from recovery. There's also been a ton of other tweals I've added with some help from HaRdC0r3 so a big thanks to him for his input on this.
credits:
zanfur - kernel
btfb0 - all his work catching the OTA and sharing with us
Make sure you perform a nand backup before flashing. Also.. as always, what you do with your device is you're ultimate decision. No one has told you nor forced you to do anything so if anything happens to your device it's no one's fault but your own.
I recommend a full wipe on this update. All updates after this I plan to try and keep as dalvik only.

I wouldn't mind going back to Sense for some nostalgia, but I'm not sure if its worth dropping GB.
From what you got tested before the phone decided to go parachuting, minus the parachute, how does it compare speed wise compared to GB ROMs?

I honestly didn't think there was much difference in speed. I also had not o/c'd it at all. I was running it at stock which is 528. It can easily be oc'd with conap's CPUBoost or Set CPU as well. But I personally didn't think it was a noticeable difference from GB.
Dude you got a sick sense of development

Ok. I flashed this bad boy last night. It is very smooth and fast. Of course it is 2.1 though. But really to me, when you have a phone like the Eris, trying to put 2.3 on it is pointless. I have tried many of the 2.3 Roms on my Eris and have always had a great experience with them. 2.1 wasn't bad either. It was the trivial things that made me want to leave 2.1 and try a newer rom.

Well every 2.3 Rom I have tried hasn't been the smoothest. I was just saying that the Eris is getting dated. I like both sense and aosp but if I can find a smooth sense Rom, ill take that any day.

Thanks. I am with you on Sense. I have always enjoyed it. It's what drew me to the HTC offerings when I dumped ATT and my iPhone.
Just 2.1 underneath made a little less enjoyable for me. Not that it wasn't smooth or anything like that but things like when I get a notification while I am listening to music or an audio book. In 2.1, the music or the book keeps playing even though the volume for it is replaced by the notification sound. In 2.3, the same actually pauses plays the notification sound then resumes.
I am enjoying Tazz Ginger Sense.
As you guys may know I was away for a little bit. I'm back and have some other things taken care of and I'll be looking into these problems some of you have posted and working on and update soon...

Looking for a stable Ron for my friends new G1

So I just bought a G1 for $40 locally in lnib condition. He is not very phone savvy so I am looking for a 100% stable and working rim for him on froyo or GB. I was thinking about cm7 but I don't know how stable it is for the g1. Like I said I need something that would give him little to no problems.
I would also like a kernel that would allow for a little bit of overclocking and undervolting.
If anyone can give me some good suggestions I would appreciate it very much. I need to do some more reading up before rooting and installing so I will coke back here later for any suggestions.

try ez gingerbread or froyo by laszlo if you dont care about features. otherwise go with cm7 magpie by firerat
They are all about the same, it come down to what you like. My personal preference is SuperAosp. I am currently using 6.4.2.
This Ron looks pretty stable.

So did they solve the slower-than-molasses problems that plagued the G1 when running Eclair, Froyo, etc? Because the last time that I checked, 'stable' isn't the pertinent question to be inquiring about when it comes to the G1 ...its speed.
For stability and speed you can't hardly beat the Super D rom on a G1.

For stability and speed you can't hardly beat the Super D rom on a G1.

is very true I think it's best i tried all the ginger 2.3.4 2.3.5 and the phone gets slow now use Froyo By Laszlo is the most stable and fast and that the battery consumption is less than the gingerbread that was just too fast

I was excited to look at Super D, until I see that it is a stripped CM6 and has not been updated per that link in over 1.5 years.
What we need are viable options for a GB rom that is comparable or better than COS-DS, and one that is being updated.
I got CM6 installed but I cannot get the market working for the life of me. I have tried just about everything.
I am going to try froyo by lazlo tonight but don't want to brick his G1. Do I just need to go into recovery, wipe, flash the correct radio/spl, flash rom?
:edit: I guess I also need ext4. I am searching around for how to convert to the g1 to ext4(does this conver the entire system or just the sd card...sorry not 100% on the G1).
If anyone could give me a rough guide to follow on how to go from CM6 to Froyo by Lazlo that would be awesome. Also...he will be here in 20 minutes lol. I will hit that thanks meter son.
Also sorry...I know xda is flooded with noobish questions now but I am not at all familiar with old HTC(know how to root the Tbolt and that's about it). I have always used Samsung phones(which are cake to root/flash).
I would greatly greatly appreciate it if anyone can point me in the right direction for this one.
Got it..my friend is now on froyo by lazlo and it runs smooth as hell and everything works fine.
P.s. I am sticking to samsung. That was wayyyyy to much reading to flash one rom ;-)

Best one for such an old phone, and you get a lot of space...Be sure to use MTD with "95" "2", get you around 100MB int or so.
Is there a all in one rare file or something cause that's a
Lot of **** on that link to bad I can't just do all this thru rom manager

You have to flash a base rom prior to flashing SuperD, this is the fastest ROM i've ever used on the G1 back when I used it. Anything past Donut, is to sluggish and slow on the G1, especially if you don't OC . Even eclair was very slow on my G1, when @768, on Donut I could use 384 and it would be quite usable. I wouldn't even bother with Ginger or ICS or GingerSense if I were you. No disrespect to the Devs or anything, but the G1 can't handle the newer firmwares. But if you like sense, a lot of the cupcake sense ROMs were really good and fast, with good battery life too.
Froyo By Laszlo.....bestest rom!!

anyone else holding back??

i certainly am, as a long time android user ( G1 crew!!) i have learnt my lesson too many times when it comes to OS updates. do not ever download and install them straightaway.
case in point- some people are experiecing USB and battery issues with the WW ICS rooted rom floating around.
better idea: wait a week for a dev to to their stuff and then jump in.
Using the US rooted and have had no issues yet. Transformer finally runs the way I want it to, have fun on HC.

For the average user this is a good idea, but for someone looking to develop, the more you know the better, even if learned by troubleshooting problems you caused yourself by being too hasty..
eg how is your USB connection, can you connect via USB?

Yeah, I am holding back too. But it is because I still haven't got an update. When I do get it, won't wait a single minute, there is nothing to loose, right?

My USB was not working but only because I wasn't doing the OTA update. Flashed that first ROM that was released with CWM. All I had to do was flash the new KWT US rom and everything is good to go. I could see your issue with not updating if you couldn't simply do a nandroid backup prior and then do a restore if necessary but I assume most patrons of this forum know how to move around between ROMs with ease. What a strange post in these forums, come to think of it.
I was holding back, but only because I had to go to work. I'm home now so let the hacking begin!
I am holding back because I dual boot and wont give up my Ubuntu boot for ICS when Prime is doing just fine for me.. And I have experienced ICS on my Mom's nexus and I am running it on my Thunderbolt, so the novelty has worn off for me..
However, once there is a nvflashable ICS port I will jump ship..
Holding back. Got the Revolver ROM 3.11.1 customized to my liking. I know I can backup and restore... but I just can't walk away from my config for an unproven and likely buggy first (and probably rushed) ICS release.
Ok, I made the switch- so far not too bad. Some things are zippy, while other things a bit laggy. Maybe a reboot will fix it.

I am using the WW ICS rooted rom. Pretty much everything is working fine.
No battery issue what so ever.
The USB issue is EASILY fixed. Doesn't make sense to hold back for this reason.
mine works perfectly except thumb keyboard has fc and goes into DEATH LOOP
took me like 15 minutes to uninstall the damn thing
I updated mine and still having the random deep sleep issues where I have to cold boot it I even did a factory reset any suggestions please and thank you
