Looking for a stable Ron for my friends new G1 - G1 General

So I just bought a G1 for $40 locally in lnib condition. He is not very phone savvy so I am looking for a 100% stable and working rim for him on froyo or GB. I was thinking about cm7 but I don't know how stable it is for the g1. Like I said I need something that would give him little to no problems.
I would also like a kernel that would allow for a little bit of overclocking and undervolting.
If anyone can give me some good suggestions I would appreciate it very much. I need to do some more reading up before rooting and installing so I will coke back here later for any suggestions.
Droid Charge/Gummy GBE 1.91rc

try ez gingerbread or froyo by laszlo if you dont care about features. otherwise go with cm7 magpie by firerat

They are all about the same, it come down to what you like. My personal preference is SuperAosp. I am currently using 6.4.2.

This Ron looks pretty stable.

nice one bruh

So did they solve the slower-than-molasses problems that plagued the G1 when running Eclair, Froyo, etc? Because the last time that I checked, 'stable' isn't the pertinent question to be inquiring about when it comes to the G1 ...its speed.
For stability and speed you can't hardly beat the Super D rom on a G1.

is very true I think it's best i tried all the ginger 2.3.4 2.3.5 and the phone gets slow now use Froyo By Laszlo is the most stable and fast and that the battery consumption is less than the gingerbread that was just too fast

I was excited to look at Super D, until I see that it is a stripped CM6 and has not been updated per that link in over 1.5 years.
What we need are viable options for a GB rom that is comparable or better than COS-DS, and one that is being updated.

I got CM6 installed but I cannot get the market working for the life of me. I have tried just about everything.
I am going to try froyo by lazlo tonight but don't want to brick his G1. Do I just need to go into recovery, wipe, flash the correct radio/spl, flash rom?
:edit: I guess I also need ext4. I am searching around for how to convert to the g1 to ext4(does this conver the entire system or just the sd card...sorry not 100% on the G1).
If anyone could give me a rough guide to follow on how to go from CM6 to Froyo by Lazlo that would be awesome. Also...he will be here in 20 minutes lol. I will hit that thanks meter son.
Also sorry...I know xda is flooded with noobish questions now but I am not at all familiar with old HTC(know how to root the Tbolt and that's about it). I have always used Samsung phones(which are cake to root/flash).
I would greatly greatly appreciate it if anyone can point me in the right direction for this one.

Got it..my friend is now on froyo by lazlo and it runs smooth as hell and everything works fine.
P.s. I am sticking to samsung. That was wayyyyy to much reading to flash one rom ;-)

You have to flash a base rom prior to flashing SuperD, this is the fastest ROM i've ever used on the G1 back when I used it. Anything past Donut, is to sluggish and slow on the G1, especially if you don't OC . Even eclair was very slow on my G1, when @768, on Donut I could use 384 and it would be quite usable. I wouldn't even bother with Ginger or ICS or GingerSense if I were you. No disrespect to the Devs or anything, but the G1 can't handle the newer firmwares. But if you like sense, a lot of the cupcake sense ROMs were really good and fast, with good battery life too.

Froyo By Laszlo.....bestest rom!!

I bring to you the not-so-impossible, Froyd on the HTC Droid Eris! =D
This is my first time on VR, but thanks to my good friend Pulser for helping me out Iam now here.
This ROM is brought to you by Me (Captainkrtek), with thanks to:
Punk.Kaos - For his base ROM KaosFroyo v39
Pulser
Conap
Decad3nce
Gnarlyc
invisblek
Everyone at VR for their hardwork!
This ROM is incomplete and probably has a few things not working, but I think is a good daily driver till I fix some issues.
What currently works:
Data (3G)
SMS
MMS
Camera
Haptic Feedback
Trackball
Wifi
GPS
Bluetooth
And other stuff that im too lazy to list
What doesn't work (yet):
Vibration
Probably some other stuff
Im not responsible if this ROM causes your Eris to implode/explode (I hope it doesnt) ;-)
Download V1.0 Here
Download V1.1 Here
UPDATES:
1.7.1
1.7.2
YOU MUST FLASH 1.7.1 FIRST THEN 1.7.2
Whats in these updates? As quoted from Pulser's post on VR:
Fixes twitter apps, apps missing from market, HTC IME mod FC etc. After flashing, you MUST wipe the app data for the market (menu, settings, applications, manage applications, all, market, clear data). Fixes voice search and speech support. Flash over 1.7.1. You MUST install 1.7.1 first, or you won't get those fixes. This goes in ADDITION to 1.7.1

Correct
2.2 vanilla, cm based
Regarding sense, there is a Hero rom called VillainROM 12 that I am reliably informed is very, very fast on the eris, to the point of it being more responsive in use than a newer device It would need ported though, so don't go flashing it from the gsm version
If there was/is demand for a 2.1 sense rom, that is fast but fully featured, let CK know
Interested
I am definitely interested in seeing this move forward from here .... not so sure about 2.1 w/sense, but VR 2.2.1 with CK (+PK !) & Pulser behind this project sure sounds like a winner to me !
Any new ROM that is FAAAST & STABLE with good support^(!!) for the lowly little Eris is ALWAAAYS a welcome option ..... that is, until the 'option' is an early upgrade ..... to a ThunderBolt, maaaay-be
Many Thanks to the Capt'n for showin' sum love for the many Erii still out there !!!
Ill keep improving this I also already have VR12 semi working.
Thanks!

At least for me it appears GPS isn't working yet. With only GPS turned on as a location source Maps complained that no location source was turned on. Not a complaint in any way....just thought I'd check since I believe you said GPS hadn't been tested.

very nice rom, I like it but question, why do 3d gallery app keep appearing on these roms? Yes its nice but everytime I load something using usb and then go to the gallery it takes forever to load. Thats why I like xtrROM because it gives you the option to choose which photo app you want to use. If this rom had it that'll be awesome. Its just that 3D gallery is not ment to run smooth on the Eris. Maybe or Maybe its just my Eris.

About to root a friends evo...... need advice... ran into problems

So I'm about to root my boys evo and start tinkering with it, my question is, what's the best Tom to load and what are the best battery saving mods available to you guys? I'm currently running cm7 on my hero but over always thought the miui rom looked pretty cool but the main thing he wants to improve is battery life. Let me know what your suggestions are. Thanks guys!
Edit: rooted with unrevoked, gained soff, wiped, flashed miui, works great for awhile but then start getting force closes like crazy! Only way to stop it is a reflash! Any suggestions?

Root using Unrevoked... And it depends if you wanna run a sense rom or not? I would perfer Myns RLS5 or CM7 RC1.
for each phone.. it seams to react differently with each.
i think it has to do with phone/ location / use.
you just have to try.. and see which works best for your boy.
you can try the top ROMs:
Mui
Myn
Fresh
CM
then try different Kernels...
there is a lot to choose from too.
me.. I like Myn + Netarchy-Toastmod 4.3.2

For rooting the thread below has a lot of good info about the Evo, for battery life that depends a lot on the ROM & kernel. I highly recommend you do not use a SBC kernel as they charge the battery in a way that every single authority on li-ion batteries tells you not to and can be dangerous.

Hopefully someone an can chime in with more EVO ROM'ing experience than I.
I have an OG Droid and like all phones, each phone is different from the next. one evo can run a rom and kernel setup great, and another evo will be unstable.
same in the droid world.
the one thing is to back up after root using clockwork recovery or similar methods. that way you can just try the next suggested rom and/or kernel.
also, this was true in the droid world. but is it necassary to wipe data when flashing to a different rom? Do you evo guys need to this as well?
anyway. my keyboard is broken. shift, 0, and the c key is getting flakey.
...off to the store...

Completely correct. Evo users should backup before flashing another rom or kernel, and always [at a minimum] wipe the cache and dalvik cache. If you get a bunch of force closes or issues [can happen when going sense to aosp or vice versa] a clean wipe might be needed, in which go into the rom, backup all apps and data, then restore only apps and data, not system settings.

I LOVE 2.2 stock

I've been one of those people who listened to others saying "stock sucks" so i always flashed a rom etc.
Today after getting my refurb, and TimeWarner Cable calling us saying our wifi might not work for a hour or two...
I just checked out the stock i got.. 2.2
It was pretty damn good.
I rooted it later, but without the root and everything
Mine was fast! No lag what-so-ever!
Now i don't get why others say their stock is SO LAGGY. I've had more lags on bionix than on stock.
0 fcs
0 lags
0 freezes
NOTHING.
Is this because my phone CAME with 2.2? or... idk.
sigh....
come back after you have it loaded up, lots of cache and you are still on a crap file system... then compare to an optimized, zip-aligned custom rom on EXT4.
Thought you knew better man.
That said, 2.2 is much better than stock 2.1.
no i always thought stock would be laggy because everyone hated it.
I know i can make it faster with EXT4, but i'm talking about stock.
just stock.
I have 98 user apps on it.
It's running pretty well for me, thats all i'm saying. 2.1 was hell.
Lol, just lol.
i haven't tried stock 2.2 but there's 2 applications that i noticed that runs faster on stock 2.1 than any other custom roms on 2.2. That's the stock broswer and gallery.

Actaully after updating from 2.1 just a week ago I have the same experience as OP. The Stock BUILD IS FAAASSSTTTT. Battery lasts two days of minimal use. More than a day for havy use. I dont know why people are hating on the stock builds. Sigh... I have yet to root and put a custom rom in mine. But with HD2 all i had was 2.3 RAM BUILD(out of this seriosly. basically some system apps and resources are stored in the ram the the UI and general apps run super fast, faster than nand.) Compared to that vibrant with 2.2 is pretty good. Not as fast but very smooth....

Eugene's kernel isn't exactly stock... To say a custom rom can't run better than stock is an insult. Nobody is claiming stock 2.2 isn't good. Our phones have great hardware.

Samsung 2.2 runs fine with a different launcher. Depending on usage touchwiz performs like crap, at least in my experience. The main reason I chose to switch to custom roms is because I'd already stopped using all the samsung software I could. I can honestly say I've had a much better experience on Bionix 1.2.1 coming from samsung 2.2

[ROM] 666th Sense V1.1 - Retro (2.1) - 7/17/2011

I've decided to run it Retro for a little bit. This is a 2.1 Sense ROM based on the March 2011 OTA for the HTC Eris. As of right now everything seems to be working very smoothly. The Rom is default O/C at 710400 with on demand governor. Min CPU speed default is at 19200. You can easily change the cpu speeds and governors with setcpu or Conaps CPUBoost. I've also went ahead and changed the kernel to zanfurs kernel by popular request. If you want to use Conaps it can be flashed from recovery. There's also been a ton of other tweals I've added with some help from HaRdC0r3 so a big thanks to him for his input on this.
credits:
zanfur - kernel
btfb0 - all his work catching the OTA and sharing with us
Make sure you perform a nand backup before flashing. Also.. as always, what you do with your device is you're ultimate decision. No one has told you nor forced you to do anything so if anything happens to your device it's no one's fault but your own.
I recommend a full wipe on this update. All updates after this I plan to try and keep as dalvik only.

I'm hoping to have this ready to post later tonight or tomorrow morning before leaving for vacation. I decided to go a little retro on a new ROM for something different since it's been a while and GB and CM7 are getting all the attention lately lol. This ROM is 2.1 Sense and based on the March 2011 OTA. With conaps cfs v9 kernel.

I'm actually pumped to try this. It should be pretty snappy since it being 2.1. Hows it going on it?

It's there now lol
I wouldn't mind going back to Sense for some nostalgia, but I'm not sure if its worth dropping GB.
From what you got tested before the phone decided to go parachuting, minus the parachute, how does it compare speed wise compared to GB ROMs?

I honestly didn't think there was much difference in speed. I also had not o/c'd it at all. I was running it at stock which is 528. It can easily be oc'd with conap's CPUBoost or Set CPU as well. But I personally didn't think it was a noticeable difference from GB.
Dude you got a sick sense of development
Welcome to porting...
Ok. I flashed this bad boy last night. It is very smooth and fast. Of course it is 2.1 though. But really to me, when you have a phone like the Eris, trying to put 2.3 on it is pointless. Im liking this Rom. Plain and runs great. I think a black keyboard with white and gray lettering would be awesome. Good job man

Edit: I have found one problem. GAPPS is force closing on me. Every few minutes it will do it.
Edit 2: the market for some reason won't start downloads at all. It was working last night. I have cleared cache and uninstalled updates still nothing
im liking the background lol do i flash gapps still? and will that sense theme work that you made for tazz's rom? or is that a different 2.? thingy lol

Out of curiosity, why do you feel this way?
I have tried many of the 2.3 Roms on my Eris and have always had a great experience with them. 2.1 wasn't bad either. It was the trivial things that made me want to leave 2.1 and try a newer rom.

Well every 2.3 Rom I have tried hasn't been the smoothest. I was just saying that the Eris is getting dated. It is cool though that we are able to put it on if we want to. 2.1 is just so smooth that I find it hard to leave. I like both sense and aosp but if I can find a smooth sense Rom, ill take that any day.

Thanks. I am with you on Sense. I have always enjoyed it. It's what drew me to the HTC offerings when I dumped ATT and my iPhone.
Just 2.1 underneath made a little less enjoyable for me. Not that it wasn't smooth or anything like that but things like when I get a notification while I am listening to music or an audio book. In 2.1, the music or the book keeps playing even though the volume for it is replaced by the notification sound. In 2.3, the same actually pauses plays the notification sound then resumes.
I am enjoying Tazz Ginger Sense.
As you guys may know I was away for a little bit. I'm back and have some other things taken care of and I'll be looking into these problems some of you have posted and working on and update soon...

De-romming HTC Hero + best current rom?

Hey guys, I bought some on insurance on my phone while I went on holiday and obviously it got broken, so Orange are ever so sweetly replacing my phone tonight with a brand new one. However, to avoid the questions, I'd like to make my phone exactly like I first got it, if that is atall possible.
Second issue, once I unpack my new baby I'd like to install the newest, most stable rom.. good battery life, fast, efficient.. etc. Any advice?
Thanks guys.

Well...seems that you want a custom ROM. If you want to run the stock Sense ROM with android 2.1 you can install VillainROM 13 (it has some tweaks that make the phone rocket )...but you can try an AOSP ROM with android 2.3.5
Here are the links were you can download them
1.VillainROM 13 [Stock ROM with tweaks] -> HERE
2.Elelinux AOSP v3.3 [Android 2.3.5 with some tweaks and extra stuff] -> HERE
3.OMFGB AOSP by JieeHD [Android 2.3.5 with little modifications] -> HERE
4.Elelinux Speedmachine V5 [Android 2.2.1 with custom settings] -> HERE
5.Floyo 1.2 [Android 2.2.1 with custom settings] -> HERE
I recommend all of them, but you choose what you like, i used the first 3 and like them a lot. PS: i put some of the roms with the direct download link, if you want to see the page go to the development section
Keep me posted if you have any problems
Stefan
Sorry if I'm hi-jacking the thread, but thanks for the helpful post stefpaul. I'm getting a Hero this week (won it on eBay for under £100) and going through the development section to look for a good ROM is like looking for a needle in a haystack!
Not that the ROMs are rubbish you understand, it's just hard to find one I like out of all the choice!

The fastest rom atm, is Vanilla Eclair. By a mile! it's awesome, good battery, as stable as it gets and the speed is incredible!

youve convinced me, im going for this one. what does 140/160 DPI mean though? and can I still run most apps that the HTC hero itself can run? Thanks.

on the 140 dpi version everything gets a little smaller. For me there's no problem to read the text and it is pretty useful to display more content at the screen. I've not found any apps that don't like the new lcd density
Yes i agree VE is the fastest rom, but still there's something need to fix, the graphic when you press the power button there is a line should not in that place.. Just a small thing, but arent we want a perfection right?
Sorry for my bad english

I've been using VillainRom since I got my Hero and never turned back, only reason I've upgraded is that mines getting slow and I cant use any apps

What do you mean? When you turn.the screen off or in the power menu? I can't find anything

There maybe some apps on 140 DPI that look funny. But in spareparts there is an option for that. Compatibility mode. change that and then reboot and all apps show full screen

Yes, you're right. It's there on 140 dpi version (whig I use). Pretty sure it can be fixed, but we will have to find someone who knows how
