I've been one of those people who listened to others saying "stock sucks" so i always flashed a rom etc.
Today after getting my refurb, and TimeWarner Cable calling us saying our wifi might not work for a hour or two...
I just checked out the stock i got.. 2.2
It was pretty damn good.
I rooted it later, but without the root and everything
Mine was fast! No lag what-so-ever!
Now i don't get why others say their stock is SO LAGGY. I've had more lags on bionix than on stock.
0 fcs
0 lags
0 freezes
NOTHING.
Is this because my phone CAME with 2.2? or... idk.
sigh....
come back after you have it loaded up, lots of cache and you are still on a crap file system... then compare to an optimized, zip-aligned custom rom on EXT4.
Thought you knew better man.
That said, 2.2 is much better than stock 2.1.
no i always thought stock would be laggy because everyone hated it.
I know i can make it faster with EXT4, but i'm talking about stock.
just stock.
I have 98 user apps on it.
It's running pretty well for me, thats all i'm saying. 2.1 was hell.
Lol, just lol.
i haven't tried stock 2.2 but there's 2 applications that i noticed that runs faster on stock 2.1 than any other custom roms on 2.2. That's the stock broswer and gallery.

Actaully after updating from 2.1 just a week ago I have the same experience as OP. The Stock BUILD IS FAAASSSTTTT. Battery lasts two days of minimal use. More than a day for havy use. I dont know why people are hating on the stock builds. Sigh... I have yet to root and put a custom rom in mine. But with HD2 all i had was 2.3 RAM BUILD(out of this seriosly. basically some system apps and resources are stored in the ram the the UI and general apps run super fast, faster than nand.) Compared to that vibrant with 2.2 is pretty good. Not as fast but very smooth....

That's why I took issue for a while when people came here for help and were advised instead to do a lag fix or a custom rom, instead of telling them to root and remove the apps causing issue or educating them on how android works ..... There is nothing wrong with stock .... and now combined with Eugene's deadhorse221[no lag fixes used] its blows away any custom 2.2 rom out there ..... as far as battery life, smooth`ness and stability ..... and before any of you lag fix lovers try to chime in, know this .. I've got two vibrants and tested lagfixes, custom roms and whatever ever else is out there and they CAN'T compare to stock 2.2 ....

How did you get stock 2.2 with eugenes kernel? Did you update from Kies and then flash the kernel? Or did eugene make ROM like this?
Eugene's kernel isn't exactly stock... To say a custom rom can't run better than stock is an insult. Nobody is claiming stock 2.2 isn't good. Our phones have great hardware.

Oh! Whoops! You can't read this!
Samsung 2.2 runs fine with a different launcher. Depending on usage touchwiz performs like crap, at least in my experience. The main reason I chose to switch to custom roms is because I'd already stopped using all the samsung software I could. I can honestly say I've had a much better experience on Bionix 1.2.1 coming from samsung 2.2

So I'm about to root my boys evo and start tinkering with it, my question is, what's the best Tom to load and what are the best battery saving mods available to you guys? I'm currently running cm7 on my hero but over always thought the miui rom looked pretty cool but the main thing he wants to improve is battery life. Let me know what your suggestions are. Thanks guys!
Edit: rooted with unrevoked, gained soff, wiped, flashed miui, works great for awhile but then start getting force closes like crazy! Only way to stop it is a reflash! Any suggestions?

Root using Unrevoked... And it depends if you wanna run a sense rom or not? I would perfer Myns RLS5 or CM7 RC1.
for each phone.. it seams to react differently with each.
i think it has to do with phone/ location / use.
you just have to try.. and see which works best for your boy.
you can try the top ROMs:
Mui
Myn
Fresh
CM
then try different Kernels...
there is a lot to choose from too.
me.. I like Myn + Netarchy-Toastmod 4.3.2

For rooting the thread below has a lot of good info about the Evo, for battery life that depends a lot on the ROM & kernel. I highly recommend you do not use a SBC kernel as they charge the battery in a way that every single authority on li-ion batteries tells you not to and can be dangerous.

Honestly, that was minimal usage for me, so I don't usually get that kind of battery life, but it still easily gets me through a day with normal usage.

Hopefully someone an can chime in with more EVO ROM'ing experience than I.
I have an OG Droid and like all phones, each phone is different from the next. one evo can run a rom and kernel setup great, and another evo will be unstable.
same in the droid world.
the one thing is to back up after root using clockwork recovery or similar methods. that way you can just try the next suggested rom and/or kernel.
also, this was true in the droid world. but is it necassary to wipe data when flashing to a different rom? Do you evo guys need to this as well?
anyway. my keyboard is broken. shift, 0, and the c key is getting flakey.
...off to the store...

Completely correct. Evo users should backup before flashing another rom or kernel, and always [at a minimum] wipe the cache and dalvik cache. If you get a bunch of force closes or issues [can happen when going sense to aosp or vice versa] a clean wipe might be needed, in which go into the rom, backup all apps and data, then restore only apps and data, not system settings.

EB13 works pretty good. I do suggest, a minimum, that you flash the EC05 modem. My 3g works better, and 4g is way better... lower latency, faster wake up, and quicker connect.
Only reason I updated is for the developer support on ec05.
If you were just stock I wouldn't think there would be much of a reason unless you use your phone for a gps navigation system..
But because I run Syndicate Frozen I went for the 1.1 upgrade. Haven't regretted it. Faster, smoother, and same battery life as 1.02.

The kernel for eb13 also has bad code for the camera video and sports mode, and Ec05 doesn't have it, but then you could flash the twilight zone kernel to fix that.

It's because cell phone hackery has been around long enough to finally attract the 'old dog' demographic. Those people who never upgrade the OS their computer comes with, or still use Office 2000.
The idea that it works just fine by their standards tyvm, so why waste time getting something new if it isn't a huge change.
Mind you, that same old dog mentality means when a huge change comes along, they're just as crotchety and whine about why people are "fixing something that isn't broken".
Old coots. They eventually show up everywhere, hate change, and never seem to check into a nursing home fast enough.
I would upgrade. The gingerbread theme works just fine with the new srf 1.1.0 rom. plus until we have gingerbread all rom updates here will be ec05. Most of the upgrades are in the modem and camera anyways. I dont think they changed much if anything in the framework. I cooked up my own theme combining the gb and honeycomb theme with a couple new status bar icons but niether of those themes were updated for srf 1.1.0. Ive been running it since they released the rom with no problems.
I've decided to run it Retro for a little bit. This is a 2.1 Sense ROM based on the March 2011 OTA for the HTC Eris. As of right now everything seems to be working very smoothly. The Rom is default O/C at 710400 with on demand governor. Min CPU speed default is at 19200. You can easily change the cpu speeds and governors with setcpu or Conaps CPUBoost. I've also went ahead and changed the kernel to zanfurs kernel by popular request. If you want to use Conaps it can be flashed from recovery. There's also been a ton of other tweals I've added with some help from HaRdC0r3 so a big thanks to him for his input on this.
credits:
zanfur - kernel
btfb0 - all his work catching the OTA and sharing with us
Make sure you perform a nand backup before flashing. Also.. as always, what you do with your device is you're ultimate decision. No one has told you nor forced you to do anything so if anything happens to your device it's no one's fault but your own.
I recommend a full wipe on this update. All updates after this I plan to try and keep as dalvik only.

I wouldn't mind going back to Sense for some nostalgia, but I'm not sure if its worth dropping GB.
From what you got tested before the phone decided to go parachuting, minus the parachute, how does it compare speed wise compared to GB ROMs?

I honestly didn't think there was much difference in speed. I also had not o/c'd it at all. I was running it at stock which is 528. It can easily be oc'd with conap's CPUBoost or Set CPU as well. But I personally didn't think it was a noticeable difference from GB.

Thanks. I am with you on Sense. I have always enjoyed it. It's what drew me to the HTC offerings when I dumped ATT and my iPhone.
Just 2.1 underneath made a little less enjoyable for me. Not that it wasn't smooth or anything like that but things like when I get a notification while I am listening to music or an audio book. In 2.1, the music or the book keeps playing even though the volume for it is replaced by the notification sound. In 2.3, the same actually pauses plays the notification sound then resumes.
I am enjoying Tazz Ginger Sense.

Are you sure that it's overheating? Because random reboots are a standard problem with most if not all ASOP roms. CM7 especially but I also had it with others. You are just using it and BAM spash screen again. I do not think it's heat related though. In all while i love the better battery life and added features, ASOPs have all just been too glitchy for me, especially when it comes to hardware control. No 720p Video recording and a 9 step program to get GPS "fixed"? No thanks.

Currently running cm7 with the cm7 kernel and have had no issues, maybe try using SetCPU and setting up some profiles to tweak things.... I know something similar is in the rom but I love SetCPU.... I can't remember my last random reboot and I've been running aosp for months, love the freedom it offers you

My phone seems to hate AOSP roms. I have tried every major aosp rom out on the EVO and everyone makes phone overheat and the reboot! I haven't seen anyone else experience this but I can confirm that it doesn't do it with sense roms...... FML. I really like aosp too

Have you tried different kernels, specifically tiamat? Are you over clocking too high?

Especially when it's true. Random reboots happen all the time in CM7. You can't deny it, because you don't own my phone. I get them constantly. There's still no 720p video recording either, the videos i take look horrible on my 55 inch. And the GPS which has been *fixed* multiple times now STILL isn't working correctly on CM7 for at the very least some of us, myself included. I like CM7 I try it at least once a month hoping they've fixed it. So far they have not so I keep dropping it again.
No overclock at all and yes all kernels do the same once my phone gets to 113*F it reboots anything below that and no reboot found out its due to hboot 2.10

Try a rosie-less Sense rom
I've tried many different asop roms, and even considering VaelPak may be one of my favorite roms ever due to customization and stability, I always run into GPS or some other radio issues. Though lacking customization, even though I feel Sense 3.0 greatly makes up for it, I would recommend the brand new Syngergy-Kingdom 7/12 Nightly(if you could even call it that, because it is the most stable and speedy rom of the series yet). Just make sure to superwipe, then wipe all in wipe list(amon 2.3) and then flash it. Others have reported issues but I believe that is due to not fully wiping their device. Enjoy, it's a really flashy rom with the speed and stability needed to enjoy it. You can choose to have rosie or not, but personally I like no rosie due to it being a resource hog and the LP dock having 5 functions. To include rosie, make sdcard/SynergyRom/Rosie before flash of rom and you're set.
Sorry to bring an old post back to life, but didn't want to start up a new thread for this either. Mods, I can start a new thread if you think that is the best route to go.
I'm having the same issue of my phone appearing to get really hot and then rebooting. This wasn't always the case I know as I remember CM7.0 (not 7.1 or RCx) working without issue. It seems that at some point along the updates to CM, I started developing these overheat/reboot issues. I'm about at the end of my contract, so I don't have to put up with this much longer, but still very annoying. Has anyone tried taking apart their EVO to see if there is something clogging up the internals and contributing to the heat factor? I have considered the idea of just going back to stock/unrooting so I could have Sprint fix/replace the phone, but I hate to go through that hassle if there is some other solution to this problem.
Yeah I've run into these same types of issues pretty much ever time I've tried an AOSP rom. IMO up until recently sbc was the only tempting feature to use AOSP over Sense. Now we have sbc on gingerbread sense. Other than that I've experienced no extra features that were worth the headaches that came along with it. I never experienced stellar battery life with AOSP either, in fact I've had better results overall with good stripped down sense roms.

So I just bought a G1 for $40 locally in lnib condition. He is not very phone savvy so I am looking for a 100% stable and working rim for him on froyo or GB. I was thinking about cm7 but I don't know how stable it is for the g1. Like I said I need something that would give him little to no problems.
I would also like a kernel that would allow for a little bit of overclocking and undervolting.
If anyone can give me some good suggestions I would appreciate it very much. I need to do some more reading up before rooting and installing so I will coke back here later for any suggestions.

try ez gingerbread or froyo by laszlo if you dont care about features. otherwise go with cm7 magpie by firerat
They are all about the same, it come down to what you like. My personal preference is SuperAosp. I am currently using 6.4.2.
This Ron looks pretty stable.

nice one bruh
So did they solve the slower-than-molasses problems that plagued the G1 when running Eclair, Froyo, etc? Because the last time that I checked, 'stable' isn't the pertinent question to be inquiring about when it comes to the G1 ...its speed.
For stability and speed you can't hardly beat the Super D rom on a G1.

is very true I think it's best i tried all the ginger 2.3.4 2.3.5 and the phone gets slow now use Froyo By Laszlo is the most stable and fast and that the battery consumption is less than the gingerbread that was just too fast

I was excited to look at Super D, until I see that it is a stripped CM6 and has not been updated per that link in over 1.5 years.
What we need are viable options for a GB rom that is comparable or better than COS-DS, and one that is being updated.
I got CM6 installed but I cannot get the market working for the life of me. I have tried just about everything.
I am going to try froyo by lazlo tonight but don't want to brick his G1. Do I just need to go into recovery, wipe, flash the correct radio/spl, flash rom?
:edit: I guess I also need ext4. I am searching around for how to convert to the g1 to ext4(does this conver the entire system or just the sd card...sorry not 100% on the G1).
If anyone could give me a rough guide to follow on how to go from CM6 to Froyo by Lazlo that would be awesome. Also...he will be here in 20 minutes lol. I will hit that thanks meter son.
Also sorry...I know xda is flooded with noobish questions now but I am not at all familiar with old HTC(know how to root the Tbolt and that's about it). I have always used Samsung phones(which are cake to root/flash).
I would greatly greatly appreciate it if anyone can point me in the right direction for this one.
Got it..my friend is now on froyo by lazlo and it runs smooth as hell and everything works fine.
P.s. I am sticking to samsung. That was wayyyyy to much reading to flash one rom ;-)

Best one for such an old phone, and you get a lot of space...Be sure to use MTD with "95" "2", get you around 100MB int or so.
Is there a all in one rare file or something cause that's a
Lot of **** on that link to bad I can't just do all this thru rom manager

You have to flash a base rom prior to flashing SuperD, this is the fastest ROM i've ever used on the G1 back when I used it. Anything past Donut, is to sluggish and slow on the G1, especially if you don't OC . Even eclair was very slow on my G1, when @768, on Donut I could use 384 and it would be quite usable. I wouldn't even bother with Ginger or ICS or GingerSense if I were you. No disrespect to the Devs or anything, but the G1 can't handle the newer firmwares. But if you like sense, a lot of the cupcake sense ROMs were really good and fast, with good battery life too.
Froyo By Laszlo.....bestest rom!!
