X8 teardown - XPERIA X8 General

I've opened my Xperia thanks to my need to open every single electronic device I have
I took some pictures (coming soon) and I've written down everything that was written on chips inside.
This is an older revision with Synaptics digitizer.

So as predicted we have clearpad 1000 wich doesn't support real multitouch, with a new kernel or without. Great Job, and will be waiting for the photos to see what the inside looks... also is is possible to change the casing from a white one to a black one without damaging parts? When you finish uploading the photos maybe you can take a picture of the tools you used, maybe it will help others too.

You can replace casing, however touchscreen is glued to the case really hard and I couldn't remove it, and I don't know are cases shipped with or without touchscreen.

Erm... you said it doesn't support multitouch. My question is, you mean dual touch, mutlitouch or pinch zoom (what is now almost fully working, so I think about the first two possibilities)? I hope Dual Touch is supported by the hardware, I don't need multi touch (or at least DT is enough for games).
Thanks in advance.

Well what I've said is our hardware supports single touch, so no MT/DT for gaming... but pinch zoom is possible thanks to doixanh by faking a second finger.

Once more: No dual touch on the SE X8!

Thanks a lot.
...now I'm a saaaad panda...
EDIT.: No, I'm not sad, because my X8 has got Cypress digitizer, as "dmesg" says. So, pinch zoom is not working, but I thing cypresses are capable of Dual Touch, now, just have to find a ppl who has got "cypress x8" and can program Android. Or, I have to learn it

Two versions of x 8 exist one with one digitilizer second with other digitilizer and devs does not got new x 8 with new digitilizer, do you get now.

So I know that there isn't any dev, who has Cypress-x8, that's why I wrote that I (we) have to find a people who has got "Cypressed" (wow, great word ) x8, and who knows how to program android.

how to check which digitizer my x8 have?

type dmesg in terminal emulator and look for synaptics or cypress lines, I do not know exactly how should it look like :d

Quote from pinch zoom topic at dev.:
For devices that are unable to use x8gesture, try this command in your phone (either with terminal or with adb shell):
Code:
dmesg | grep "cyttsp-i2c"
If you have something like this, that means your X8/X10mini is using Cypress and therefore it will not be supported by x8gesture:
Code:
<6>[ 4.185259] cyttsp_i2c_probe: Successful registration cyttsp-i2c

Whats the difference between these two digitizeres?

If I'm correct, the dititizer that came from Cypress can do Multitouch (no, not pinch zoom or just dual touch... multitouch!), and the Synaptics' can't (at least the ClearPad1000)
But now we really getting offtopic, so let's go to a multitouch topic!

Yeah, but i saw that microsoft Kin two has same Touch solution and it supports Dual touch, it seems to be software emulated, but if we find out how it is, we can port it to X8

we couldn't because kin two hasn't linux based kernel.

To all: Stop dreaming MT/DT won't happen for the X8.

X2 wishes. Only 1 item allowed.

I had a conversation with a couple of friends the other day and we talked about the X2. Everyone made a ton of suggestions as usual. That got me thinking...... what is the single most desirable feature/part/option that YOU would like to see in the X2.
It may be anything from android or WinMo 7 to capacitive touchscreen, dvb-h receiver, flush screen, accelerometer or a 5 row keyboard . You may choose only one thing, so choose wisely....
After a lot of deliberation I decided that the featue I want the most is.....
Multi-touch resistive screen . Yes, I said resistive. Check it out:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/19/stantums-mind-blowing-multitouch-interface-on-video/
I hate resistive touch screens because you can't use a stylus. I would say 4 inch screen Xperia.
it should be programable hw keyboard...change the language, then the letters on the buttons change accordingly
The ability to play an 1376 Kbps Bit Rate Xvid, 164 Kbps Audio MP3 at 624x352 Pixel File at a full 100% without dropped frames.
You didn't say I couldn't list the faults of the X1 which are:
Keyboard slightly too small.
Main Hardware buttons a little fiddly
External speaker/ringtone output rubbish.
Camera too slow.
Other than that I absolutely adore my X1 (Even though it does have 'the crack' (Which I've never bothered to return to get fixed))

well since my baby is near perfect, Id say Id like a more intuative OS, even if itswindows based...it need to flow alot smoother.
having one video player to play all videos (divx, xvid, wmv,mp4,3gp,mov...) smoothly no matter how high the bitrate.
12.1 mp camera, something I want in a phone that's both sexy and powerful.
I would say better support from SE, regular firmware updates, a separate support group who know in and out of the X2, including the workings of WinMO.

i am waiting for the next release with qwerty with one 1ghz snapdragon
I am most likely gonna skip the next gen/WM6.5 , stay with HD and wait for WM7
I am actually waiting for a HTC device with the Nvidia Tegra chipset..
guys shouldn't this topic be on another thread? like Blackstone general discussion?
The only thing I don't like in HD2 is no second camera for video-call and the absence of the stylus to write on keyboards and maybe in some apps is not functional only the finger...

Oh well, I will sell my HD for the HD2.
I love my HD in a way that i can't see myself selling it unless i see these combination in a phone:
1- nVidea Tegra or SnapDargon
2- Dual/Stereo Speakers
3- 8mp Camera+Flash
4- HD Video Capture (720p)
5- Physical tilting Keyboard (No on-screen keyboard, to work freely)
6- Front camera.
7- 4.1-4.3 inch 480x800
8- 1350mAh+++ Batteries
9- Stylus (Screen Pen)
10- Multi-touch Resistive or capacitive.
Hopefully we'll hear of something like that from hTC soon..
Until then i'll stick with my HD and maybe hear news of upgrading to WinMo 7..

I'll do exactly the same
and if WM7 is another disappointment I think I'll go for an Android phone
I hope they find a better way to input Chinese, 'cause handwriting recognition only works through resistive as of now. HD2 just won't do it for me.
It'd be great to have a capacitive touchscreen and the ability to handwrite in-- hopefully-- the next version... seriously, I think a major reason why HTC has been so slow to migrate to capacitive screens is that they have a huge Asian market to cater.
where is the moderator when u need one?????... this is general discussion not rom developement....
when the phone you mentioned is going to sell, there will be a better specs phone announced... life is always like that
and my plan is: to let my girl friend use my HD, and i will buy a HD2

I am afraid this is not achieveable. You cannot have both a stylus and a capacitive screen and I've not seen a multitouch resistive screen yet, except in some weird hardware demos earlier this year.
HD2 is a beast really but there is still something that will not make me change my old HD:
1) I love my phone but If I could have the same in a smaller form I would be the happiest phone owner on the earth and HD2 is even bigger than HD
2) I don't think WM6.5 is ready to be used without a pen
3) I dont'use video calls but .. really ? It does not have a front camera ? Can't believe it
4) Why should we need a double frequency processor to run the same old WM crap? Sense interface is not worth it, just wait for a better optimized version of manila
5) Those devices are not simply phones, they cost A HUGE LOT of money, a producer cannot force you to change one per year without offering very STUNNING new features. HTC should really understand that

I was thinking about getting an hd2 but wm6.5 is a nogo for me. I will wait for the next generation (wm7) devices or even consider another platform if wm7 is as badly engineered as 6.5.
I´m getting my HD2 next month. I´m thinking about selling my HD but i´m unsure about it. I might keep my HD just for the cooking. The HD2 dont have so mutch more to offer but i think it will be a while before we se a "better" phone from HTC. But if they realese a better (with physical querty) one in the future, then i might just sell the HD2
For now it it seems like i´m not sticking with my HD as i just bought a new TV and a HTPC. But i dont know

The hardware is there. There's just no software capable of it yet. I'd be suprised if we don't get full multi-touch recognition apps at some point. (For people that don't understand what that last sentance actually means, please note that when I say full multi-touch I do not mean more than 1. I mean as many as you want.)

found this, but i can't get it to actually respond to multiple fingers
You might have to soft reset to get it to work. It won't recognize more than two fingers as documented elsewhere on here or on his site, guess he never got around to doing a lower-level hook.
Or is there a way to upgrade hd2 clearpad 2000 to 3000?
According to the Visual Multitouch Test App from the Android market, I can only use up to two points. I don't know if this is a restriction caused by the Android port, or if the HD2's digitizer/screen can only support two points at once.

I can't belive a company as big as SE would produce a flagship phone and use a 3yr old touchscreen, I would have thought it has a Clearpad2000 or 3000 fitted to it and Multitouch can be enabled at a later date?
Theres keeping costs down and theres blatent stupidity.
If you think about it, multitouch isn't all that. People mostly want it for zoom-pinching, requiring 2 fingers, which is too difficult to do with just 1 hand. I stopped caring about Multitouch after I saw a youtube of X10 mini way of zooming using 1 finger. Just like how you add widget to the android 'desktop', you press the screen for 1 sec with 1 finger, then drag up and down to zoom in and out. Double tap is also possible, but I like that new way better

Well the video was in X10 mini, right now X10 doesn't have that. But since X10 won't have multitouch, there's a good chance the X10 gets X10 mini way of zooming.
The video of X10 mini zooming is a fact, but hoping it to be available also on X10 via update is purely my personal expectation. So don't start rumors that X10 will definitely get that too lol.

hd2 can't really handle multi-touch well? (compared to samsung or iphone)

sorry if this was mentioned before, but i cant seem to find any related threads on hd2 forum, anyways here it goes
does anyone else find the hd2 handles multi touch really poorly compared to some other smartphones out there? like the iphone and samsung galaxy s. this is especially obvious when the two point are close to each other in either axis, which is demonstrated by the video attached below (not by me!), although htc desire is used in the video, i can replicate the same response on my hd2 easily
so my question is, is the htc hd2 hardware 'imperfect' or is it the driver for the touch screen the one that is causing the problem, cheers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVlsRCMltDg
edit: forgot to mention, what i mean by hd2 handles multi touch really poorly is when the 2 touches are close to each other in either axis, the hd2 sort of just merge the two axis, although they are not exactly in the same line!
Ill take the hd2 off your hands.

i see, hope there will be a fix in the future, because HD2 is one of the most capable smartphone ever... kind of unfortunate when the software cant utilize its full potential!
It.s a known old problem on the HD2. It was a long hard debate that HD2 can only ,,pinch-to-zoom,,. HTC implemented the drivers to use the device just for pinching. There are some workarounds on WM 6.5 to use the MT (look at fpsece) but if you refer to android (games i assume) you will experience weird behavior on the HD2.

Dont see the problem personally, unless you are expecting three point touch. Trying one of the multi touch test apps in Android, it works fine... are you referring to the snapping when the points approach orthogonal? or maybe mixing it up with this: http://www.knowyourmobile.com/blog/326530/htc_hd2_leo_lacks_universal_multitouch.html
...which clearly is untrue.
Real multitouch?
HTC HD2 have Synaptics Clearpad 2000 - work only with two fingers.
So there is no chance to see real multitouch on HD2 :/
Producent page : http://www.synaptics.com/sites/default/files/Product_Brief_CP2000_01_0.pdf
HTC Evo 4G have new touch panel - Atmel MaxTouch mxt224 - UNLIMITED FINGERS!
@UP :
This videos don't show new drivers . It's practically impossible to write new drivers by normal person.
Even with 2 fingers MT does not work as it should, actually HD2 is capable only to ,,pinch-and-zoom,, (as i said there are some work-arounds but you can.t compare evo or iphone MT with HD2)

it works, thats about it. the biggest problem i've had so far is when the two touches are quite close on the y axis, e.g. using a multi-touch keyboard, when i type o immediately after a, sometimes the o is registered as k or l, because the os somehow merges the two touches vertically, so they seem to be on the same horizontal line (sorry if i didnt explain this properly, but i think the video i've attached above should make this clear)
One thing that I noticed when using MultiTouch Visualizer 2 (free on Market) was that touch point 1 and touch point 2 would flip when using any Nexus builds. It is most apparent when touching between diagonal corners. Desire builds will show the two touch points recognized correctly. If anyone is having problems with Nexus builds, try this out. It may be part of the reason for your multitouch problems.

the hd2 doesn't have the clearpad 2000 , i asked htc themselves , it is used in nexus and desire not hd2 , that is why we don't have the axe problems that they face , and the 2 point multitouch is a driver limitation as htc said to me
