Do not flash ota!!!!!!11 it's got a bootloader in there
I'll have something flashable shortly!!
you've been warned.

Are you saying that they are trying to lock us down now?

Do we have any info on the bootloader changes?

with fastboot ala oem unlock how can they lock us down?

Thanks for the heads up

Is this a headsup for what will happen, or did you actually get your hands on the 3.1? Got me excited!

Awesome! You are the best! Long live XDA!!!
Hopefully you'll have something flashable for us wifi users???

kewl, can't wait to see the changes on the WIFI-only one.
guessing this'll be a rooted update.zip we flash via CWM BRD you rock!

Pretty sure he's saying it'll overwrite any bootloader you've already installed, IE Clockwork Recovery.

Could you upload the update for those of us that don't care about the bootloader?

Clockwork recovery is not the bootloader, it's a recovery. I would expect Moto to push out new stock recoveries (hopefully that support the sdcard).
But really I don't expect this to screw up anyone's root or bootloader. Proof or GTFO.

Im upping it now. I have not flashed yet. Working on modified safe version. Honestly, I don't know what that bootloader binary does. And I personally don't wanna find out. I've been in this game to long to mess with all that. However, if anybody want's to play guinea pig, go for it.

No, he is making huge assumptions without anything to back it up. I HIGHLY doubt this will lock down your device.

I'll load it tonight, really REALLY REALLY highly doubt this has any adverse affects and is probably just a bug fix anyway.
Seriously you guys are sometimes way to paranoid.

I hope I'm wrong and everything is just fine. However, as a developer, I have an ethical obligation to protect users. Period. If I see something that don't look right, you're damn right I'm gonna be paranoid. What would you guys be saying if it does lock down the system? "Oh, how did BRD miss that!?" You don't know if Motorola changed their mind about OEM unlock. But please flash and let us know.

How would we go about flashing this. I'm backing up my xoom now and am willing to try if I knew how to install it.

I understand trying to educate and warn users, but this is neither. This is just FUD spreading.
A more appropriate post would be "Warning: there is an updated bootloader binary in the motorola update. It is probably nothing, but you may want to hold of on updating until we find out more"
As a developer you shouldn't be participating in just FUD spreading (and generation) and get to the bottom of it. Claiming otherwise just makes that large "Donate link" at the bottom of your posts even more ironic and annoying.

[Q] Gonna be getting this when my plan is up, few questions.

I'm gonna be getting one as soon as my plan is up. I have a few questions though.
1. (Disregard this one. Didn't realize this was a Verizon exclusive.)
2. When I first get it should I OTA it, so it doesn't disable the possibility of unlocking it?
3. Is this phone supported by many developers?
If I think of any more, I'll post them. Thanks guys!

You will most certainly be able to unlock the phone with the latest update using either cellzealots method or mine, but the bootloader will remain locked disabling the ability to use custom roms. If you get one on the 98.17.66 (?) Software your good to use Matt's Droid RAZR M Utility to unlock the bootloader yet so dont take the update, unlock the bl and do what youd like

stock, this phone is great (not sure about the latest release - although, I think it was just to enable a security patch to prevent folks from unlocking the device). so, essentially, if your version is prior to May 2013, then you'll be able to unlock with current methods - otherwise, you'll have to HOPE for someone to create a new method for unlocking or for the devs to make their ROMs flashable via safestrap.
I'm pretty sure you can still root though.
developer support is great (both kernels and ROMs).

right - do not accept the OTA if your baseband is prior to May 2013. if it reads May 2013, then you've already got the latest, and you're locked until someone really smart decides to crack it.
if you wanted to, go into the store, have them break out the device, and check the baseband.

[BootLoader/Root Discussion] No Bounty, Just plain discussion

Okay we have a Bounty thread... Leave that for just plain Bounty pledges..
In here feel free to talk about BootLoader discusions, Root discussions..
Nice thread. Would be nice to discuss about Moto Maxx root as well. Since it has unlockable bootloader, I believe root is pretty doable, but I have no idea how to, since there's no custom recovery yet.
Nice thread.... looking forward

some one knows how can we help to find a exploit or something that will make our Turbo able to get root??
When lollipop gets released for the Turbo, I'm going to have a tough decision. I really want that sweet new lollipop, but I also know that the chances of rooting it will go down significantly. So, the question is, should we stay on KitKat in hopes of getting root? It's going to be really hard to resist 5.0. And since the 2014 Moto X just got it, I think we're not far behind.
There's a vulnerability in KitKat, we just have to figure out how to exploit it. CVE-2014-7911. More info can be found at http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2014/Nov/51.
Your chances of getting root with LP and a locked bootloader depend on an exploit which has yet to be found and that may be some time and on some phones has never happened on previous operating systems. You would be much better off if the phone was released for unrestricted world wide sales but being CDMA and a Verizon exclusive is guaranteed to prevent the large scale adoption that would have made it more attractive to developers. Realistically no one here knows better than you whether root is more important than getting LP are for you. For my purposes I consider root a must have while having no issues with kk which I like just fine which would make it an easy choice.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't we just revert to kitkat if an exploit is found?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2929737
That's the factory firmware we could flash if need be.

Maybe. With Qualcomm chips, it's possible to make reverting to an older version result in a hard brick. With Big Red's knowledge of what they can do, unfortunately, they might implement this "feature". Plus, a vulnerability has already been found. We just need to figure out how to exploit it.

At least with my Motorola RAZR M, every time they had a big version upgrade they also upgraded the security partition (which would be incompatible with prior firmwares), making it impossible to downgrade without an unlocked bootloader.
Sent from my Droid Turbo.
I think I have an idea on how to obtain a bootloader unlock. It most likely will not work, though, as I highly doubt it would be this stupid simple. As I do not yet have a Turbo, could someone send me the result of "fastboot oem get_unlock_data"? PM it to me and I'll test my theory. I'll also need one from some other (model doesn't matter) Motorola device, too, that actually is eligible for official bootloader unlocking.

When I say send it back, I don't have to send it right away. If the unlock does work, I assume I could lock it back down before sending back?

With Motorola devices, I don't think it's possible. I think the qfuse gets permanently blown. I would send it back if I were you. This method probably won't work anyways.

QuadRooter Vulnerability?

Looks like there's a new vulnerability that is able to achieve root through a couple security holes.
Ran the Quadroot scanner app on my galaxy s7 edge PD8 and it does show its vulnerable to this.
From what I've read, this malware can achieve root just by installing it like any other Apk app.
Would it be possible for Devs to purposely download the malicious malware and make a working towelroot like root method for our devices?

None yet, it's the base for getting root, once we find a way to get it to stay rooted. It's mainly for those who upgraded to the 2nd iteration of the bootloader and can't downgrade to a rootable firmware (It's been confirmed by a few to work with the new Cyborg rom, albeit without root).
As of right now, unless you know why you need it, it's best to leave it alone.

Well, I may have spoke too soon, you guys might want to take a look here in the Cyborg rom thread, seems they have a modified U2 bootloader they're flashing and retaining root. One member has volunteered to do a factory reset to see if it survives, but if so, v2 bootloader may now be rootable, or at least on the right track for public use.

Thanks for answering that man. Haha. That's awesome that the guys got stuff moving that quickly. I knew that they had the files also, but, held off as long as they could until I came along.
But another useful feature I've noticed in this combo firmware is that there is an open unlock option now and mine sticks after reboot. I tried build roms, kernels,etc.. in the past that ended in ultimate failure. I'd like to start again. At the moment I just cruise the foreign forums grabbing whatever software I can find. I kinda have building only the tree down, not so much, as it's been years. I used to build Linux OS's a long time ago but forgot. I'll do my own research here if it, anybody wants to teach, I'm all ears, all eyes. Aloha
