I installed MN 4.5.6 a few days ago and everything was working OK as far I could tell...tonight I felt adventerous and decided to install the newest nightly build (67)...everything looked different and the B&N factory apps were gone as well as the free apps I installed from the market...I liked the look and feel of the newest build but I wanted to keep the B&N apps...is there a build that will do this? or does the nightly builds remove all traces of the B&N apps...I'm restoring my original nand backup now and I'm wondering what ROM I should use once I root the NC again
If I've used terminology wrong here I apologize in advance
Thanks
If you are rooting the nook, you are granting yourself access to root (you gain full control of the exisiting OS). If you are installing CM7 nightly you are flashing a completely different ROM to the phone (Android 2.3.4).
The former is like giving yourself adminsitrative rights on your desktop computer, the latter is like wiping the computer and installing a completely different operating system.
ok thanks...clears things up

Heya, the N1 is my first phone so a lot of this is brand new territory for me
Anyhow I had a problem with a metamorph theme so i used nandroid to restore back to an update i made this morning (After i rooted N1). However now apps that require root access (Metamorph, N1 torch etc) are now all running into errors such as cannot access LED, cannot extract files (Even though all partitions have at least 40% free space).
Any ideas guys? Thanks!
EDIT: One of the root programs i tried to run stated that it can only run in read-only mode, is this familiar to anyone? Thanks!
your answer is in other parts of the forum but you still have root just dont have su permission anymore. you can flash a custom rom or flash the cyanogen add-on. pm if you need help
Ah right, is this common after a nandroid backup? Could someone perhaps post the link to the cyanogen add-on? I'm currently running the latest cyanogen for the nexus one, thanks
As far as I know the Cyanogen add-on is the Cyanogen rom. It is not a completely standalone rom, just sort of a patch for the stock rom.
I just re-flashed the rom and everything is sweet again. This is my first android phone never mind first rooting experience so all this is new Cheers guys

I perma-rooted my T-Mobile G2, but now I'm lost.
Since I can't flash official ROMs, what can I do to update OS? Are there any options besides CM7? If I switch to CM7, does it mean I lose all my previous installations? And does it mean I'm stuck with CM forever? When do you expect official version of CM7 to be released?
Thank you in advance.
You can flash any ROM you want. There are many good solid ones in the Development forum here and other android forums of course.
If you're looking to back up your apps before you install a ROM (because you must wipe all data when installing new ROMs) I'd advise you download an app called Titanium Backup. I use it regularly when switching ROMs and it really is necessary. This can back up all apps, app data, and even system data if you want. You can then restore after flashing your new ROM.
CM7 is at RC-1 (Release Candidate) which means that it has been declared stable enough with few enough bugs for the general public. I've personally been running nightlies for a few weeks now with no issues, and the RC-1 seems to be similar. There really is no date for when it will become an official release, but if you're up for waiting that's totally understandable.
If you don't wanna go with the CM7 RC route, you can always go to one of the other Sense-based ROMs, or even CM6 which has been extremely stable for a long time now. You can always just check out one of the stock 2.2 roms as well, they're often optimized with no bloatware and often run quicker than the stock ROM with perm root you have now.
Changing ROMs is easy, and just because you decide one doesn't mean you can't switch to another. Just use the app "ROM manager" to backup, wipe, and install different ROMs as you see fit.
Basically which ROM you choose is up to you. Just look through the dev forum and check out the offerings, read then ask questions and try them out. I definitely recommend reading some of the stickies about backing up/flashing/etc. before you get going.
Kinda hard for me to give more info because it seems like you're pretty new. I'd just advise that you read up on everything and always do backups before you flash any ROM or update in order to restore if you run into issues.

1. Download and install ROM Manager and within ROM Manager flash ClockworkMod Recovery. This will allow you to create and restore complete backups of your phone. This should be the first thing you do. Second, create a backup (a Nandroid). It will be almost impossible to screw things up permanently with ClockworkMod Recovery installed and a backup on your sd card.
2. After you have a backup created, you can start trying different ROMs and if you don't like it, just try another one or restore your backup. You can even have multiple backups of different ROMs and switch back and forth if you want.
3. You are going to see a lot of references to gapps, which is short for Google Apps. Many ROMs come pre-loaded with gapps - Cyanogen was stopped by Google from incorporating them into his ROM's so the package is made available to flash immediately after you flash a CM ROM. Once you log in to Google with your account (use the same one every time) all your market apps will start downloading from the market automatically - that is all the apps that you had actively installed before you switched ROMs. Your phone will be sluggish at first while it updates all your market apps. To backup apps that you've installed from your sd card, download Titanium backup.
4. Now that you're rooted you aren't stuck with anything. Your options are wide open. Just look over the XDA site. It'll be obvious how much you can do with your phone now.
I'm on CM7 now and its very stable. Download build #41 - 42 should be out by the morning. If you decide to go with that, you won't believe how much more your phone has to offer than the stock ROM. I don't believe you'll ever want to go back to stock again, but if you do there's information here in the forums to do that including unrooting your phone.
I agree with this, read about the different roms in the G2 Development Section especially.
It's a bit confusing with all the roms, but as long as you backup your rooted setup now, you should be free and fine to try several different ones. (See step 1 about by EdKeys).
I recommend purchasing Titanium Backup...it will allow you to reinstall all your apps relatively quickly and keep all saves/settings.
Try out a sense rom (for example Virtuous) as well as CM7. I tried out sense before, but it makes the phone feel slow despite being very cool. When I first rooted my G2 I went straight for Cyanogenmod 6.1.1, as it was the stable version. Cyanogenmod 7 RC1 is way better.
Good luck and I hope you find something you like!
I highly recommend Virtuous.
Also, this isn't stated anywhere normally, so I'll share with you: I absolutely suggest using ROM Manager for most everything - it's a GUI for Clockworkmod, basically, and makes things a bit easier.
HOWEVER
The only ROMs you'll find in ROM Manager are ones that the developer has submitted. Not all devs care that much, so you'll find a TON more ROMs to try in the Development subforum. To flash one of those, simply download the .zip file of the ROM to your memory card (it doesn't matter where, you could put it on the root or you could create a 'romstotry' folder if you wanted).
Once you have the zip file on your memory card, open ROM Manager, choose 'Install Zip from SDcard' and show ROM Manager which zip file you want to use. IT'll then pop up and ask if you want to wipe, and if you want to backup your current ROM.
If you're switching between two different ROMs, you *always* want to wipe. Always. If you're simply installing a new version of the ROM you currently have installed, you don't *need* to wipe (unless the dev specifically says that you need to, so read the changelogs), but it's a good idea to do so anyways. You'll have a bit more setup to do, but wiping will prevent most problems that people seem to have.
hope that helps.
Thank you very much all. I installed CM 7 RC1 and it works great. I will try other ROMs when I get familiar with CM.

Hi - the first thing I did after perma-root was change the boot animation for my G2 - you can do it by hand, or you can use an application located in market - just search for 'boot animation.'
After that's it's straight to the custom ROMs - I'm using Sense Virtuous 1.0.0 and loving it.
I'm running 7.0.3 from an SD card using verygreen's instructions, and loving it.
However, I used the latest installer image (1.3), which you're not supposed to use unless you install nightly 87 or later. Mistake. The problem with this is that it seems you can't boot into recovery using any method, and I've tried lots. I see others have the same problem.
If I want to upgrade to 7.1.0, can I do it using ROM Manager? Download, backup current rom, etc., and install? I've got things set up the way I like, I don't want to lose everything or start from scratch.
Any suggestions?
Y'all are geniuses!
Rom manager only works for roms on internal memory. If cannot access recovery you are going to have to reformat and start from scratch.

Thanks, that's what I needed to hear. I'm new to this, it's probably assumed knowledge for most.
I reinstalled with the latest nightly, and learned how to use Titanium Backup, so all is well.
Hi I just got a nook color for 160 bucks off Craigslist. It is rooted running cyanogen mod 7 encore 7.0.2. I was wondering how to get miui ubuntu and bluetooth working. Also I'm new to this so if there is anything else you guys recommend it'd be great to hear about. Also when I first opened up rom manager it says I need to install a recovery and I accidentally installed a one for a different device and now I can't access the recovery and when I click on flash recovery and I click on nook color it says an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands

I dont have the links off hand, but you should be able to create a micro SD card with CWR on it and boot into it. From there you should be able to modify and reload everything onto the NC.
Essentially start from scratch. I recommend ditching 7.0.2 and using at least 7.1RC or one of the newer nightly builds. 7.0.2 doesn't have deep sleep and there have been a lot of fixes made in newer builds.
Welcome!
I would also recommend just starting from scratch, unless there is anything on the NC now that you desperately wanted to keep. Who knows what the previous owner did to it. I've personally installed CM7 (just go with the latest nightly) to emmc using these steps:

If you want to go the SD card route, follow :

There are steps in each thread about updating to a newer CM7 release. Bluetooth "just works" in any recent nightly. You can enable it in the networks settings panel. If you want to keep what you have, you might try going into the Applications settings and clearing data for Rom Manager (not 100% sure how to undo that setting). There are threads in the Android Development subforum for MUIU and Ubuntu, but [and I'm partial here], CM7 seems to be far and away the better option.
Just a side note here. Since I run bluetooth and host mode daily, I check out each nightly before playing too much. N 161 and 162 have comments about BT issues. If you really need BT, I have found 160 is rock solid.

thanks much!
I've got a nook color that I originally set up for my sister around a year ago. It's got an old version of miui installed directly to the internal memory. (android version 2.3.4) She never used it, and now it seems like it is way out of date, and can't get anything worthwhile on the market for it, not even angry birds for her kids to play. There is nothing worthwhile on the tablet, so I don't care about losing any data on it. I am trying to update it with a newer rom and running into nothing but problems. It's rooted and I know I put clockwork mod on it, but if I boot into recover the screen just goes black. I try to download clockwork mod from the market to make sure it is up to date but it won't cope up when I search for it. I try to put anything bootable on the SD card and the nook won't power on. Can anyone help me get this thing straightened out?
You will not find clockworkmod recovery on the market. Try opening ROM Manager from your apps drawer. It should find an up to date clockworkmod for the nook color and download and install it for you. If you cannot find ROM Manager, you can install that from the market. Use ROM Manager to boot to clockworkmod. Then you can flash other roms.

Check this thread here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1700105
Basically it says that the 'playstore' has stopped working on MIUI. I would suggest downloading the lastest stable of cyanogenMod for your nook color and the latest .gapps for it. Make sure you are using Clockworkmod 3.2.0.1 for the nook color , all of these files are available through a google search.
Here on the forums here is the link for Recovering your eMMC. DO NOT layer a cyanogenMod build over a MIUI build, it will hose out your kernel base. That means you will have to backup your data with clockworkmod as a nandroid backup and wiping your data and caches on that eMMC. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1759558
