Ok so i've downloaded a live wallpaper called shadow galaxy from the market. Probably one of the nicest wallpapers ive seen but it will literally kill my battery in 8hrs. I mean man...
Shouldn't the wallpaper go into some kind of standby when the screen is off so that it doesnt eat at the battery?
I mean approx 8hrs from 90% to dead and not even touching the phone is nuts. I went to sleep and it was at 7% when i woke up!
That's the reason why most people go with the standard wallpapers instead of live ones. It's just not worth it.

They all do it. Even the bundled.ones in the phone completely rape your battery. I've tried them. No live wallpaper is worth it, imo.
Battery life is the most important than after "does it work?" in a mobile phone/smartphone to me.

why do you hate your battery? lol live wallpaper = massive battery drain
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
I've used Photile Pro for weeks and my battery doesn't seem to drain any faster than from normal use with a non-Live Wallpaper. Coding does make a difference and not all of them are horrible on your battery.
I used to use solar winds and usually got decent battery life with it. It was the only LWP that wouldn't kill my fone. Give it a try for a few days.
I use live wallpapers because everytime I turn the screen on my to my phone i jizm almost instantly. I then use the jizm as a screen cleaner. This is why I like to use the live wallpaper!
Haven't run into a badly coded LWP in a while, I'm using Flurry Live and it doesn't affect my battery at all

You may still get good battery life while using a live wallpaper but there's no doubt you'll get even better without it. Even the best of them still take load on the battery, after all, they're background running apps.

Yep. They use a grid chunk of ram as well... There are no good upside to using them. A pure black background does wonders for your battery though

I have no prior experience with live wallpapers before getting my Vibrant. Do any nexus one users or other 2.1 early adopters have experience with battery life and using a live wallpaper for everyday use?
My battery info shows that the live wallpaper only uses about 2% of the battery but my screen takes up like 40%, isn't there some sort of connection?
What is your question?

I'm using the "Ocean Waves" live wallpaper and haven't had any problems with short battery life or low system resources because of it. It's fun to play with and great for showing off to people and has made one iPhone 4 user actually hang his head in shame after talking about how great it was that he can have a background on his phone now.
I use nexus works fine battery life is good

I don't know exactly how you find that info buy under battery usage, "magic smoke" set to red and it says my display has only used 9% of the battery... but I think that's not even close to the values you are giving...
EDIT: Yeah, that's the wrong stats... where do you get that info?
I have had good battery life with this thing so far (as much as I play with it), but that is only in comparison of a g1 I got just after they first came out that has been hacked to hell and back...
i like the ocean waves one...
Thanks for the feedback guys. I plan on keeping my live wallpaper. After using them, its hard to go back to static wallpapers.
If you want maximum battery saving from your wallpaper... true black doesnt use any battery. Google true black in your phone browser, save, set as wallpaper. I havent had any problems with battery from live wallpapers though..

what about new ones? or only stock ones available ? New live ones would be cool that use less power etc.
So my battery has been great since switching to bangster's build. I loved it. Only thing that confuses me was my "about battery usage" status. It shows that my display is eating the majority of my battery. Any idea?
I'm using the latest tmousa radio. My setting is always 25% dim and no animation. I don't have live wall paper nor any widget that requires constant update.
I've attached a screenshot to show my status.

How did you get that screen? Then I can compare. I'm sure it's correct and probably normal if you think about how big it is. All those numbers are relative to each other. Your screen is going to take up the majority of your battery compared to apps, regardless of what it's set at. I bet if you set it at 100% brightness, the percentage will stay about the same.
Mine has always had similar readings regardless of build
i also got 80% ? even when i turning off the brightness :-D
Mines doesn't ever seem to take as my much but my android system does.

Wow my screens sucked sorry lol
but after about 50 mins my display was 16% and my system 60%

80 percent is pretty high.
These are my stats after being off the charger for about 8 hours. Even if I had my screen on and playing on my phone all day I have never seen dispaly that high on mine.
Maybe the app you're using isn't working correctly on the HD2 (what is that, taskkiller x?)
As long as it's a minor inconvenience like that I wouldn't worry about it...
I was running dark stone's build before this and I remember system taking the majority of the load so I was just concern about my display setting.
I have task killer but not set to autokill. I'm stumped on this. Maybe it is normal since my battery life is better than ever.
Maybe I should post this question in bangster's thread to see if other users of this build experience similar things.

The screen using an average of 80% of the battery is nothing unusual. I have just checked mine and after 13 hours I have 58% of battery power left and the display has used 75% of it.

How much do you use your phone a day?
Mines is weird. I am already at 82% and it's been only a few hours off the plug.
What the heck? If you check my signature, I think I have a decent build. Ugh. ANy Ideas? PLZ!
Has anyone done a quantitative comparison of how much a live wallpaper, such as the standard "Water" or "Ocean Waves," eats up in battery life compared to a simple, static wallpaper?
Well for me it's really sucking my battery when using live wallpapers so after that i hadn't tried using it again. I'm using a wallpaper which is completely black just for the sake of the phone's battery even if it's boring. lol
I'm using anipet aquarium and I don't think the hit is too bad. Maybe instead of 40% at the end of the day, I'm at 30%.
I didn't want to start a new thread or hijack yours, but I cannot find the "grass" or "water" Lwp 's anywhere, not in a rom or apk. So if anyone has those apks please post them.

That's about my experience as well. If you can easily make it through a day without LWP, you'll make it through the day with it.
If you're one of those people that is constantly searching for ways to conserve juice, don't use it.
I'll start by saying that the attached pictures say it all folks.
I'm simply at a complete loss as to how my phone can be so awake ALL the time.
If anybody could give me ANY insight as to why it might be the case, I'd REALLY appreciate it.
Also, I can post my alarmdump.txt if anybody wants to see it.
Again, any and ALL help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to ask me for any more info that might be of use in diagnosing the problem.
That NYC map app seems to be the culprit. As well as the Google Search widget, for some reason.
Uninstall the app, remove the widget, reboot and see if it's much better

Thanks for the insights so far bros.
I'll say that I actually DO NOT have the google search widget. In fact, the only widgets I have are a watchdog widget and SwitchPro lockscreen button widget.
I'll keep investigating.
Thank you guys for the quick responses.

Well I've frozen the default ADW launcher that CM7 comes with. I'm pretty sure I took off all homescreen icons and widgets before I switched the default to Zeam.
Does anybody know if freezing the Modem Fastdormancy element in Titanium Backup would cause any problems?
Please help me fellas.

im also curious about modem fastdormancy... i froze it because it was a wakelock culprit, but am getting really fast battery drain as well. not sure exactly what modem fastdormancy does tho
http://groups.google.com/group/android-platform/browse_thread/thread/9cb9c3e94da63110?pli=1
So basically, Modem Fast Dormancy = do not freeze. In my understanding, it has to do with the radio and disabling it when not in use, or something to that affect. I haven't studied it, but that's a quick 10 second synopsis from reading that article. I would stay away from disabling it.

Right on. And thanks for the info.
When I froze ADW I also UNfroze Fastdormancy, and then rebooted, so hopefully that'll help.
What about the wakelocks for Event Log Services?
Does anybody know if there's a way to find out exactly what that is, and if there's anything I can do about it?
Thanks for the input so far guys I REALLY appreciate, and little by little I think things are working out.
You're showing 27 hours there..................many people struggle to get 1/2 of that. I am one of the few who gets 28-30 hrs from full charge with moderate usage. I think it's fair to say you have fairly decent battery life, even with only low usage. I wouldn't complain too much.................just keep trying to make it better!

The thing is, he might have good battery life compared to others but his screen was barely on, he shouldn't be having all those wake locks. I have a similar amount too. If we could get this settled our 1 day battery life might turn into 2 days which would be amazing. I'm sure many people's phones are like this.

Yup bro this is exactly it.
It might be good battery life- but I'm not using my phone at all.
After unfreezing Modem Fastdormancy I've definitely got less unexplained blue in the "awake" time graph. I also froze ADW and that seemed to help.
Thing is, there is still lot of mysterious chunks when my phone is awake.
BetterBatteryStats says Alarm Manager and Event Log services are to blame (top two- represent a substantial percentage of the partial wakelocks and thus time awake).
I'm about to terminal emulator dumpsys my alarmdump.txt, but is there a similar solution for Event Log Services that will allow me to see EXACTLY what's putting it at the top? Only clue it gives is that it's apparently "Google Services."
Past that I've got no clue what it's pointing to.
If I get the Event Log Services fixed, I'd venture to say that would solve a LOT of problems for me.
Thank you guys for everything so far. You laid out some really good and interesting ideas- ones that I definitely wouldn't have thought of.
I'm very, very appreciative, and if it's not too much trouble, bros, KEEP IT COMING!
Ultimately, I want OTHERS to be able to reference this thread in their quest for a better Atrix, and maybe even a better android phone in general!

Quick question bros:
If I get my alarm manager dump, will that have any or all of the things contributing to the Event Log Services wakelock?
Like I've been saying, it looks like all I need to solve this is some breakdown of the Event Log Services to see what's putting it at the top.

I honestly always had battery issues with cm7 keeping the phone awake. I switched back to Alien ROM an now my battery life is back to normal, around 42hours. I also saw great improvement when I uninstalled Watchdog while I was on cm7 and so thus I have never reinstalled it again.
Well,
Due to this post I checked my Atrix and saw that it wont go to sleep as well, and stay practically always awake. I started using AntTek App manager to freeze some apps that worked all the time (mainly Facebook and an israeli VOD app) and the phone started to go in sleep. I dont know how it will affect the battery life (which is about 16 hours from 100% to ~5%, with data always open), but I will test it for now and report once I have some news...
BTW Im running CM7-Ba2tF, with faux123 enhanced 1.0 Ghz Kernel, and UV.
Hello! I was wondering why suddenly my Android OS was at 70-90% when it was below 50% when i got the phone in first place. I then started thinking what could cause the drain and then i remembered someone saying that the torch needs a lot of permissions, so i thought that was it, and yes that was causing the drain. So all i wanna say is not to use the torch widget because it apparently likes eating your battery... My battery goes about like 10% in 30min not using the phone at all with the torch widget, but if i remove it from the homescreen, it goes only like 2-5% in a hour. I hope this helps people struggling with battery problems. Please use the thank you button if this helped you.
I have noticed some odd behavior from that widget, such as it becoming unresponsive. Although I did find it handy I am taking it off immediately.
Know of any alternatives to try out?
Yeah i experienced the unresponsiveness too some times. If you want an alternative, you should look for them in the Android market. Theres heaps of them. I cant link any yet because im on my phone. When i get to a computer i will.
EDIT: This is a really good alternative i think https://market.android.com/details?...sMSwxLG51bGwsImNvbS5kZXZ1bmkuZmxhc2hsaWdodCJd

Anyone can recommend a good flashlight app which allows to adjust the brightness of the LED flash, just like the widget does? Thanks.
Hmm SanQ, I was thinking about what you said here and tried removing the battery widget and see if it was true. And hey, the battery life does improve! Looks like the widget got some serious problem. So many permission accesses!
Good to see that my tip is working for you guys.

Same here. Mine is only 10 days old (on Vodafone UK, stock 2.3.6, KK9) and I don't have a torch widget.
I'm using one called "Tiny Flashlight + LED" and it's great.
Also, people are saying that with the torch widget removed their battery is only using 2-5% per hour when idle. I don't get it... that's a lot isn't it?
Are custom ROMs really power hungry or something? I'm on the stock ROM and it uses about 0.5% per hour when idle for me.
