Torch widget draining battery really fast. - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hello! I was wondering why suddenly my Android OS was at 70-90% when it was below 50% when i got the phone in first place. I then started thinking what could cause the drain and then i remembered someone saying that the torch needs a lot of permissions, so i thought that was it, and yes that was causing the drain. So all i wanna say is not to use the torch widget because it apparently likes eating your battery... My battery goes about like 10% in 30min not using the phone at all with the torch widget, but if i remove it from the homescreen, it goes only like 2-5% in a hour. I hope this helps people struggling with battery problems. Please use the thank you button if this helped you.

I have noticed some odd behavior from that widget, such as it becoming unresponsive. Although I did find it handy I am taking it off immediately.
Know of any alternatives to try out?

Yeah i experienced the unresponsiveness too some times. If you want an alternative, you should look for them in the Android market. Theres heaps of them. I cant link any yet because im on my phone. When i get to a computer i will.
EDIT: This is a really good alternative i think https://market.android.com/details?...sMSwxLG51bGwsImNvbS5kZXZ1bmkuZmxhc2hsaWdodCJd

Anyone can recommend a good flashlight app which allows to adjust the brightness of the LED flash, just like the widget does? Thanks.

Hmm SanQ, I was thinking about what you said here and tried removing the battery widget and see if it was true. And hey, the battery life does improve! Looks like the widget got some serious problem. So many permission accesses!

Good to see that my tip is working for you guys.

Is the torch widget a stock widget?

Yes it is on KL7 and up i think.

Today I went from 70% battery to 20% in under 3 hours of mostly idle usage after using the widget. The strange thing is that yesterday I used it, too, and I had no adverse effects. So... sooooo strange. Hello new app!

yeah... Mine is about 3 months old.. I got it from technotradinghouse in the US..local in Missouri..
Mine never did have a torch widjet..
Still doesnt..
what gives???
I had to d/l mini flashlite from the market.
thanks.. jh

Same here. Mine is only 10 days old (on Vodafone UK, stock 2.3.6, KK9) and I don't have a torch widget.
I'm using one called "Tiny Flashlight + LED" and it's great.
Also, people are saying that with the torch widget removed their battery is only using 2-5% per hour when idle. I don't get it... that's a lot isn't it?
Are custom ROMs really power hungry or something? I'm on the stock ROM and it uses about 0.5% per hour when idle for me.

Battery life stinks...

Hey guys what is up. I'm just wandering.. my Droid is brand new. Got it 2 days ago. Today I had to recharge my battery twice. I did use it a lot... so that may be it.. and when I didn't use it the battery life stayed the same for as long as I didn't touch the phone. Is my battery good? I got the app that tells me the temperature and everything. The hottest was 112F. It says my battery health is "good health". Will my phone hold a charge for a longer period of time after it has been charged then drained... and repeated. Does it just need to be broken in? Thanks for reading this whole essay I wrote you guys.. Haha. Well thank you so much again... and if you can please get back to me as soon as possible that would be great!

You should really search a little bit before you post. There are COUNTLESS threads on battery life.
Your best bet, until HTC fixes it, is to charge until the phone says you're at 100%, then turn it off and charge until the LED turns green. Charging and discharging really won't affect anything - their is no "memory" with their batteries.
Okay, thanks for the quick response. I appreciate it. Sorry. I should've read.. I was just a bit anxious. My apologies.

Check Settings > About phone > Battery and make sure up time and awake time aren't the same.
If they are the same, it means something is keeping your phone awake when the screen goes off, which drains battery.
I just got my Droid Incredible a few days ago too, and I knew coming into it that the battery life has issues from a lot of users, but man, it really sucks!
I have it fully charged at 8am, and by 3:30 (with very moderate use), it's already at 20%. I've disabled everything I can (WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, live wallpaper, installed ATK and keep my tasks at none, etc), and still the same.
I really love the phone (it's amazing other than battery), but the battery life is such a big deal for me that I am really thinking about returning it and waiting for the Samsung Fascinate to come (hopefully sooner than later). Thankfully I have until Aug 30 to call Verizon and return the phone... i sure hope the Fascinate gets a definite release date by then.
I'm going to try the full charge + phone off + charge again to see if that improves things, but other than that, does anyone recommend the Seidio 1750mAh battery or the HTC Touch Pro2 OEM (1500 mAh) battery? Does it make that much of a difference?
I read the findings on batteryboss.org, and it appears that the TP2 battery was better but the Seidio battery they tested was a used one, so it wasn't a fair comparison.
Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Loose atk....and read. I get a full 18 plus hours and I don't bump charge. Lots of info out there

I purchased a 2150 mah battery from verizon and i can say I wont be having battery issues.. that is one option, but you wont find a case that fits your phone, that is the only downfall
I was just reading reports about the new Facebook app...looks like they are working on that fix if you use that and it is causing a battery drain
http://www.androidcentral.com/facebook-confirms-battery-drain-latest-android-update
Uninstall the 1.3.0 facebook app RIGHT AWAY if you downloaded it. That destroyed my battery life yesterday and I have never had battery problems with my DInc.
You can just use the regular HTC Facebook app until an update is released for the facebook for android.
Try it without the new facebook for a day and see if it changes.
If you don't have the facebook app then just make sure bluetooth, gps, wifi are off when you aren't using them. I recommend trying bump charging but I've never personally and my phone lasts about 26-28 hours+ with mild to heavy usage depending on the day.
-Flawless
Thanks for the replies..I don't use Facebook so that wouldn't be my problem.
I think ATK is good.. I mean I don't have it on auto so I sometimes just kill all tasks and I have noticed any decrease from the already poor battery performance.

Ionno what it is but I'm running froyo 2.2 n I Thot this issue would be addressed but still nothing.. I'm hoping the VZW push will address it... I get decent battery life when I charge fully then turn off then plug back in til light turns green but its a pain in the ass to do dat.. I believe my awake time is like 3-4 hrs with an uptime of like 18-19 hrs

I have a Sedio 1750, which I bump charge every morning, and UltimateJuice set to turn on APN every 5 min for 30 sec or until data transfer is done. WiFi is used whenever possible and otherwise turned off.
I easily make it through the day and have battery to spare with moderate to heavy use.
All the battery life horror stories make me wonder what everyone is doing differently. Haha

What I like about being rooted and having CM7

So I haverrooted and flashed CM7 today and there's quite a couple of things I really like
-Boot time is much lower
-SD card takes way less time to prepare after mount or phone restart
-Themes
-Custom Boot animations
-Overclocking
-You have way more customisibilty /lolwut/
-Gingurbread!
-A large communty willing to help
and more
Post what you like a lot about being rooted/cm7 in this topic!
Feeling, that phone is almost completely yours.
Im going to update soon to cyanogenmod I tried it out today but used my back up to go back because i didn't had much time today to install en set up everything i want on my phone. Does gps work with cyanogenmod?
If it doesn't I think you just need to reflash a radio
I went ahead and installed CM7 too
My top thing I love is Control
Even in CM7 there is apps I dont want i.e "mail" & "books"
Now I can get rid of them
I love the fact that I do not have teeter or stocks installed on my phone.
I love that I have changed the font of my phone.
I can finally change lockscreen.
Its faster! (Even angry birds RIO)
It looks more glossy/sharper (It looks like screen had a major upgrade??)
I have not OC'd my phone yet but I may have a play with that later
Text seems unclear compared to HTC default rom. Any help with that?
hey, do you know how to remove the vibration that happens when you unlock the phone(slide to unlock)

Underclocking improves battery backup. Make sure that the phone is in an underclocked state when not in use and depending on ur usage.
And common factors also matter. Like vibration, ringtones, brightness etc.

Yeah I was gonna ask about battery life, I rarely have wifi or bluetooth on and set up sync times to be every 4 or 12 hours usually with screen brightness quite low. Do you think I would see significant gains in battery life using CM7?
I'v read conflicting reports on CM7's battery life.

Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
And what about undervolting? Can we uv our devices, so battery life could be longer?
I'll add what I hate about CM7 vs Stock sense
-Battery life is almost 2 times worse. (at 600mhz)
-Contacts facebook integration is poor. (I can live with this)
-In order to use gps I have to flash a new radio. which I didn't because I am a tech noob
-Google maps text quality couldn't be any worse. Almost unreadable.
It's a beautiful rom. Such a shame.

I am in WAKELOCK HELL

I'll start by saying that the attached pictures say it all folks.
I'm simply at a complete loss as to how my phone can be so awake ALL the time.
If anybody could give me ANY insight as to why it might be the case, I'd REALLY appreciate it.
Also, I can post my alarmdump.txt if anybody wants to see it.
Again, any and ALL help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to ask me for any more info that might be of use in diagnosing the problem.
That NYC map app seems to be the culprit. As well as the Google Search widget, for some reason.
Uninstall the app, remove the widget, reboot and see if it's much better

im also curious about modem fastdormancy... i froze it because it was a wakelock culprit, but am getting really fast battery drain as well. not sure exactly what modem fastdormancy does tho

So basically, Modem Fast Dormancy = do not freeze. In my understanding, it has to do with the radio and disabling it when not in use, or something to that affect. I haven't studied it, but that's a quick 10 second synopsis from reading that article. I would stay away from disabling it.

Yup bro this is exactly it.
It might be good battery life- but I'm not using my phone at all.
After unfreezing Modem Fastdormancy I've definitely got less unexplained blue in the "awake" time graph. I also froze ADW and that seemed to help.
Thing is, there is still lot of mysterious chunks when my phone is awake.
BetterBatteryStats says Alarm Manager and Event Log services are to blame (top two- represent a substantial percentage of the partial wakelocks and thus time awake).
I'm about to terminal emulator dumpsys my alarmdump.txt, but is there a similar solution for Event Log Services that will allow me to see EXACTLY what's putting it at the top? Only clue it gives is that it's apparently "Google Services."
Past that I've got no clue what it's pointing to.
If I get the Event Log Services fixed, I'd venture to say that would solve a LOT of problems for me.
Thank you guys for everything so far. You laid out some really good and interesting ideas- ones that I definitely wouldn't have thought of.
I'm very, very appreciative, and if it's not too much trouble, bros, KEEP IT COMING!

If I get my alarm manager dump, will that have any or all of the things contributing to the Event Log Services wakelock?

I honestly always had battery issues with cm7 keeping the phone awake. I switched back to Alien ROM an now my battery life is back to normal, around 42hours. I also saw great improvement when I uninstalled Watchdog while I was on cm7 and so thus I have never reinstalled it again.
Well,
Due to this post I checked my Atrix and saw that it wont go to sleep as well, and stay practically always awake. I started using AntTek App manager to freeze some apps that worked all the time (mainly Facebook and an israeli VOD app) and the phone started to go in sleep. I dont know how it will affect the battery life (which is about 16 hours from 100% to ~5%, with data always open), but I will test it for now and report once I have some news...
BTW Im running CM7-Ba2tF, with faux123 enhanced 1.0 Ghz Kernel, and UV.

Check the carrierIQ thread in general. Forget where the detailed play services one is, but if you use TB to uninstall the system play services and then reinstall it from the play store you get less wakelocks.
I installed CleanROM 1.1 on Sunday. Battery life on Monday was excellent. Monday evening I went ahead and disabled CarrierIQ because of the excessive wakelocks (but it didn't really kill my battery). What I don't understand is that BBS is reporting that my phone was in deep sleep when I wasn't listening to music through my headphones or bluetooth. So I don't really know what to make of it, because it was sitting in my pocket for most of the day at work.
Normally I'd still be at like 85% at least. I was hoping someone could shed some light because BBS is not reporting any excessive wakelocks that could drop my battery almost 50% in a 10 hour period with only a little over 10 minutes on screen time and an hour of music playback.
Android status can also shed light on run away processed. Outs in the play store.

Haha, even your "bad" battery day is still pretty good compared to me. I kind of think anything over 10 hours is good.
Right now I'm at 86%, that's 5:51 up, 4:03 deep sleep, 1:48 awake, 0:45 screen on. Which, yes, means my phone has spent over an hour awake without the screen on? Very sad.
One odd thing I notice is that it says I spent 42 minutes with No Data or Unknown Signal. I wonder if that's part of it being Awake? it kept searching?
Other than that I've got 11 minutes of NlpCollectorWakeLock for that 5:51 up.
I'm not complaining, those are still very good numbers. But I feel like lowering that off-screen awake time could take it from very good to great.

Yeah, you know what I never really thought about it like that. Though I *do* kind of have fun looking at my location dashboard in Google and seeing where I've gone and other metrics.
But you're right, its a huge hog (I'd say I get an extra 5-8 hours without it) and it isn't adding *that* much value.
I Greenify Facebook Beta and Twitter. And for some reason Google Keep keeps getting stuck in a sync loop, so I Greenify that too.
Think I'll clear data on GNow and see if I really notice the loss.

I Greenify Facebook Beta and Twitter. And for some reason Google Keep keeps getting stuck in a sync loop, so I Greenify that too.
Think I'll clear data on GNow and see if I really notice the loss.

I don't know if clearing data turns it off, I just went into it and went to settings and turned it off

Horrendous Battery Life.

So I see some people on here getting 9+ hours of screen on time on here. That is AMAZING. I know basically everything has to do the user. But I have attached some screenshots with about 30% battery left. I was wondering if anybody could help me out. Or any out of the ordinary tips.
it looks like you're using your phone a lot, and should get over 4 hours of screen on time. Perhaps you can reduce your screen brightness or something, turn off GPS, location reporting etc.
BTW, theres no way anyone would get 9 hours screen on time on a note 3, with reasonable screen brightness. I average 5 hours, less if I'm using more system taxing apps.
I assume if your on xda your rooted. My saving grace is under clocking. I use my tablet for gaming but I have about an two hours of screen on time, four hours of talk time and about an hour of maps and I'm currently sitting at 73%. Also if you don't want to run a custom rom freeze everything you'll never use and greenify everything keeping your phone awake. With light usage I can get 4 days on a charge. As soon as I get money in going to get the 10 mha battery. There is a review on xda where the guy could get 2 days of screen on time and like a day and a half of gps/map usage.

I would start with quick things to check....disable GPS/location settings, disable Sync altogether(via status bar toggle) if you don't mind not getting your Twitter updates(see it's using 3% of battery in your screenshot), disable NFC if it's on, turn off WiFi and Bluetooth when not connected
Also check out your RED mobile data signal in your screenshot and see if you can fix that, "signal hunting" when your phone doesn't have a good data signal really hurts battery life greatly
Next I would install an app like Wakelock Detector, open it, and change the view to "Wakeup Triggers" and after your phone has lots of time with the screen off, come back to it and see what's causing your phone to "wake up" when it's trying to "sleep" when screen=off

What do you suggest I under clock to? And what app to do so? Also what about I/o schedulers and governor. And by under clocking you mean lowering the max could rate right? Or the min too.
Here are a few screenshots on my wakelocks after about 10 min.

Wow Kik caused 4523 triggers in just 4 hours lmao, and switch that view to "wakeup triggers" is how i gauge it better, but with the view that you're on there...you can tap the name of the app for more info on what it's doing exactly like "Alarmmanager" or w/e the app is doing
Edit: also ditch Google Music if you play music from SDcard/locally like me....i use Beat instead, free app
I use rom toolbox pro and I under clock to 1036 mhz with cfq scheduler and interactive governor. Rom toolbox pro is great at about everything you need to do and greenify pro with xposed features help a lot

I would but I use Google play all access unless you have a good free music downloader to suggest.

+1 for beats. I used MOG for a long while before beats bought them out. Combine that with folder mount and I can store all my music to my sd card. To bad I couldn't transfer my music from mog to beats and have not had time to re download but I had about 50 gig of music before the switch over.
what happed to me

when I used xposed one of the items must have caused it as after I took them off the battery works fine (two days if I am carefully) charging once at night gives full day (plus) on battery.
