I know alot of people have done something like this already just wondering who likes the newer phones that are out and want's one or is using one. Love the Evo wondering what would be better to swap over too next.
1. Epic looks sweet
2. Echo 2 screens looks sweet lacks 4g
3. Galaxy S nice look to it.
4. Evo 3d looks nice tho the evo's already struggle with battery life think this one will make it worse. Nice features tho.
So what phone do you prefer to get and why?
P.S. This is general thread question. Thought it would be better here then Q&A those are more for Trouble shooting tech problems.
I would go with an Evo 3D or galaxy S.
The Echo...get serious.
I voted for the 3D. Its the best one that's confirmed to be coming to Sprint.
Echo, for sure.
Hear that phone is a BEAST!
I voted for the Galaxy S because my cousin just got the GS2 for T-Mobile that I rooted. So far its a pretty cool phone. I like how slim and lightweight it is and don't forget about how cool the screen is haha. But I also would like to try out the Evo 3D even though I don't see the point of having a 3D phone nor TV. But the hardware and sense 3.0 is sweet
i jumped ship after 6months with the Epic, "LACK" of support was my biggest gripe. i come to the EVO and I'm super happy on this side of the fence. I will sticking to the HTC brand for quite some time to come. only one man's opinion.
If I could buy any phone today (or this summer, obviously), I would choose the Galaxy S II. Without question. Slimmer device, better screen, better battery life, etc.
And the whole "Samsung sucks with updates" thing has been proven to be complete and utter b.s. It's the U.S. carriers. All the other countries around the world got FroYo for the Galaxy S last Fall. Some countries even earlier than that.

If it was all up to the carrier then why did the evo receive updates more readily than the epic? Also, evo upgrades were solid while Samsung and sprint ended up pulling updates on two occasions because of instability and complaints. That never happened with the evo ... there is truth to the complaints and what's been said about Samsung...

I used to say that also. The Evo got updates, but the Epic didn't. Then I looked around, and saw that basically THE ENTIRE WORLD has 2.2 on their Galaxy S, except for here in the U.S. There are already leaked builds of 2.3 for the original Galaxy S, but yet the U.S. phones don't even have FroYo. I'm not saying that Samsung is without fault here; what I am saying is that if the the rest of the world (pretty much) has 2.2 on their Galaxy S, there is obviously something going on with the U.S. carriers.

I get your point, nonetheless I prefer HTC though I think the Sammy has better hardware. My wife has had a poor experience with both the moment and now the epic. These experiences have led me to question Samsung more and more while HTC has never let me down. Even my touch price was solid (though I know this wasn't the case for most)...

Nothing groundbreaking, but a fun vid. They give Evo a slight edge.
nice video..good stuff...
The fact that HTC is about to release an update for the EVO after their froyo update, and Samsung hasn't even gotten Froyo yet is enough for me to put the EVO way in the lead.

This and the fact that flagship HTC phones always get 10x the community support.
The insides (hardware/specs) of the Epic 4G are way better but outside (software/build) is just blah.

To defend the epic it hasn't been out to long. How long did it take HTC to get out froyo for the evo...what 2 plus months. The community for the Epic too is far ahead of what the community was a the same time for the Hero. So if it is that important to you that you have a larger e-penis then I fully understand your bias and random facts...

Nope nothing to do with e-penis. Has to do with the fact that I know HTC has better support for their phones than Samsung.
My friend has the epic, I think it has one of the best hardware keyboards out there the Super AMOLED screen is awesome, and the processor is great. With all that being said, I have no faith in Samsung taking care of the phone as much as HTC does.
And if you want to go by your line of thinking the Samsung Galaxy S line has been out longer than the HTC EVO and not ONE of them has Froyo on them officially yet.
HTC has put froyo on quite a few different models so far, and Samsung can't do it on their one line of phones that's supposed to be their top of the line phone which has already shipped 1 million units in the US alone.

Yes, but the htc was initially released with android 1.0, and froyo wasn't released for another month. But epic was released 2 months AFTER froyo was released, and they have plenty of time to recode it for froyo and then release it. So in total it's been 3 months since froyo was released and epic doesn't have it atm.
And Sprint/HTC were the first to rollout Froyo. (Google pushed it for the Nexus One).
Before I click the link, knowing cnet I bet they mentioned iPhone several times lol.

To debunk you, the Galaxy S line of phones has been out across multiple carriers and countries for as long as the Evo has been out. There are only two minor differences between other Galaxy S phones and the Epic - hardware keyboard and WiMax. They could have pushed out a Froyo update by now but Samsung is just full of fail.

I was really only upset about the part that you were implying that my opinion had to do with me worrying about the size of my e-penis.
Hardware wise the Galaxy S is undeniably a better phone, but from my experience (and yes I've owned Samsung phones too), Samsung is horrible with software. Back in the old days software wasn't a huge part of cell phones, but today, no matter how good the hardware, bad software will make a phone bad. I'm not implying the Galaxy S software is bad, I actually kinda like touchwiz, but I'm worried about how long Samsung will have people like my friend stuck on 2.1.
I made no opinion on the Galaxy S hacking community since I have no experience on what they're doing.
To end this debate, I have the largest e-penis.

no one here is saying anything about the phone itself. Everyone knows the hardware is at the top of the pyramid. The only reason the evo vs epic threads happen is because of the software portion. We know that evo is behind in hardware, but the software/updates make up for that. And to a normal user, the software part is what matters. The main argument between the evo vs epic thread is about the horrible support samsung has done in the past. No one knows if samsung will turn it around for epic, but it's looking like that so far. (this is coming from seeing an article about a new samsung galaxy S phone coming out, and it looks like the epic will be left behind just like all the other galaxy S line was left with gps/capacitative buttons/etc..
Personally thats why I didn't buy the phone. I'm still within my 30 day limit and can get it in a snap, but I just dont trust samsung, just like the thousands, if not millions of other people, that have gotten screwed by their older phones (instinct mainly).
but then again, even if samsung were to release the froyo update, most wouldn't switch because of the development support here. If froyo is released, and if htc doesn't release gingerbread to us before that, then I will admit that the epic is a better phone from top to bottom (minus the screen, 4.3 beats the **** out of anything), but I just don't see that happening.
both are great phones but it comes down to this
physical keyboard
From my own experience, the epic was an epic fail. I had one the day they were released and my touch buttons didn't respond unless I put a considerable amount of force on em. My wife got one the same day and her epic didn't have that problem, so I thought I can live with it, but alas, it got to the point where it wouldn't respond at all at times. But, that wasn't the deal breaker. The slide mechanism started coming loose and I could feel the screen flopping as I typed which was unbearable to I returned it for another.
The Second Epic I had seemed okay, or so I thought. I brought it home charged it, ran through the setup and yada yada and everything was kosher. Until I tried to charge it while at work. I almost ran it dead and plugged it in, an hour later I went to check on it and it had the battery symbol with a thermometer flashing. Tried to pick it up and it was burning hot. Unplugged, let it cool, turned it on and it was so laggy I couldn't even get the dialer to come up. So I returned that one too, lucky for me they just had a new shipment of Evos come in so I snatched one up while I could.
Two epics to one evo, my money's on the Evo.
Im jumping onto the Evo!!!! I am returning my Epic tmmrw and then ordering an Evo, I just need a PHONE and not a supercomputer in my pocket, not saying the Evo isnt great and fast, I just dont need what the Epic has to offer at this time, community is more important than the Screen hahaha

I'm with STHNS. After buying a Captivate for my gf and doing research on it I am flabberghasted at how many issues plague that phone. The rooting procedure is a nightmare, the GPS is a joke, Samsung's bloatware is incredible and almost a year later they still haven't updated it to Froyo.
I am VERY glad I didn't get a Vibrant. Stay away is my advice.
Cool, guys thanks. I only heard about this phone on Monday when the rumors hit, so I had no idea people were already talking about it.

I am a former Vibrant owner. The MT4G is leaps and bounds beyond the Vibrant. In the 3 months that I've owned the Vibrant, the majority of my time was spent trying to apply various fixes to try to make the phone work as it should. With the MT4G, the only modification I've made was applying the Gingerbread launcher. As such, I have no reason to believe that the repackaged Vibrant (make no mistake, it's the same phone with a couple of extra bells and whistles thrown in) will be any better. I suggest avoiding Samsung phones altogether, at least in the near future. That company really needs to get its act together.

Agreed. We've got the best processor, the most RAM, and because it's an HTC we've got tons of ROMs and developer support. There's been an ongoing project to port the Nexus S ROM over to SGS for months now and it's still unstable. We've got CM7 as a daily driver already.

I would agree with this. I had much respect for Samsung but after buying my gf a Captivate and doing more research I'm on it I'm very displeased with them.
LOL kgbkny I remember when I had HD2 and Vibrant first came out people came up to me and was like this is better than yours I was like idiot you don't even have lagfix installed and I can beat it down without scaling my CPU at 768mhz. He had no idea so I installed various packages and fixes and he agreed it ran better after and was thankful. But ya Samsung you should avoid it period go with superior mobile vendor like HTC how many phone that is flagship of many carrier is not HTC? Lets be real now HTC is the way to go.

I laughed at this one and I'm a vibrant owner. I got my wife a mt4g for xmas and there is no comparison. Stock out of the box the mt4g is leaps and bounds better than the vibrant. As far as speed and response, the stock mt4g was at a minimum as fast as my rooted/modded/voodoo lagfixed vibrant.
I've installed just about every rom that's come out for the vibrant from eugene, master, and team whiskey as well as every leaked modem that's come out and the mt4g consistently gets better signal than my vibrant as well. I'll be sitting in my house and the vibrant goes back and forth between edge and 3g and I've never seen the mytouch on edge once. Then you have to factor in the gps problem of the samsungs and the fact that samsung has a terrible history of supporting their devices. They'll straight up leave you hanging. They came out with the galaxy s line, then in no time flat they come out with the nexus s, and now they've come out with the vibrant 4g. All that is great if they support their devices when they move on to new ones but they have a history of not doing that. In the meantime I can put gingerbread on my old ass HTC G1.
The one thing the Samsung has going for it is the screen. That screen is hot **** but it's not so great that it makes up for all the other areas that it's deficient in IMO.
Plus the mt4g has sensui. Not everyone likes sense. I do, but more importantly I can run the senseui but if I want something different I can root the phone and install a more vanilla android experience. With the vibrant there isn't any stable sense roms running on it. So you have more variety with the mt4g as well. Plus the extra RAM doesn't hurt either or the FFC. I like the physical buttons and the trackpad as well. YMMV.

AT&T is getting the Desire HD very soon. Of all the current phones, it's the only one that I would give up the MT4G for.
Did you check the communication spec for DHD? It uses 900/2100mhz for 3G you won't get 3G in USA but you can use 2G for d/v. Far as MT4G vs DHD goes I was like you also but as they do share similar spec but if you look at benchmark you will see MT4G is superior than DHD but DHD does have 4.3" display lol which I miss so dearly, but also would have picked DHD if had 3G support.
I'm going to be changing providers soon to Sprint. I've been on T-Mobile for the longest time. Had a Nexus One but sold it due to financial woes.
Anyhoo... I'm looking at the Samsung Epic 4G and it seems to be the nicest phone I've seen yet on Sprint. I don't like the EVO, at all, and the EVO with a keyboard is too small for me.
Thoughts on Samsung? Thoughts on this phone overall? I have played with them a bit (a couple of co-workers have them) and, though I'm disappointed that they don't have the 2.2 Update yet... I'll live. I haven't had a smart phone at all for several months now.
I'll be getting it at the end of next week, if the Epic is what I decide on.
If you want a high end one, and you don't want the evo, get the epic. Otherwise, for sprint ID android, get the Optimus S.

Well, I have both the Evo and Epic, but I would sell my Evo before I sold my Epic. Just because when the source code drops for the Epic, CM6 +CM7 + overclocked- undervolted kernels etc... will make this phone shine like it should have been 5 months ago.

The difference is that when this phone launched it was launched under the guise that it would receive Froyo in a timely manner. Now 5 months later they haven't updated it yet. The more phones they release, the less incentive they have to update older devices. They gain nothing financially from updating devices to newer versions of Android. A small percentage of people, at most in the high single digits, actually care/know what version of Android the phone is running. Even if they wrote off this group of people and these people never bought Samsung again, they gain business by constantly introducing new shiny phones for the remaining 90+% to buy.
That is why I am concerned with them releasing new awesome phones while ours remain on Android 2.1.
Regardless how long they took they still kept their end of the bargain. Look st the mytouch slide. They are speculating someone after march for their 2.2 upgrade. So HTC should get the same flack. Yet I don't see it. Motorola did the same thing with the droid X. they brought out 2 devices with 2.2 while droid X users waited. See what I am talking about? People tend to promote another manufacturer without actually looking at times. They all do the same thing and sometimes it falls under the radar.
The best android phone for sprint is not the one I have (epic), but the one that has the best specs today. Don't believe anything sprint says about future software updates unless they put in writing with a specific release date. Sprint are the biggest gd liars when it comes to selling phones.

Samsung epic is the best phone hands down!

The epic is a much better phone but as you can tell with all the froyo post samsung and sprint cant seem to provide us with an actual update. That had never been a problem with any htc I have ever owned.
that's the only reason I say evo.

If you can live without an official Froyo for an indeterminate period of time, or are willing to try custom ROMs, then go for it. The Epic is a great piece of hardware, I really like mine. Then again, there'll be some new hardware coming to Sprint in the near future I'm sure.. might be better to wait another month or two if you can stand it.
updates are nice...but if Google is really trying to push this gaming stuff, then thats when the Evo gets killed. They added a lot of things in Gingerbread for gaming but none of that is going to help the Evo out. The Evo with Gingerbread still can't play Dungeon Defenders while the Epic on 2.1 can...so really, Gingerbread is just an update that gives the Evo the Epic experience (because Gingerbread really does feel like 2.2.1 on the Epic).
And there are so many other things wrong with the Evo as well....main thing is 4G and battery life. The Evo doesnt even report the right battery percentages. You can be on 100% then go into recovery, come out of recovery and be at 96%...go back into recovery and come out of it and be at 98% -.-. The battery is also a slippery slope. Once the phone heats up, there's absolutely no way of cooling it down unless you stop EVERYTHING you're doing. And everything heats it up, and it only takes 20 mins of usage to go from 80 to +95 degrees. They do have the dev community and kernels, but the kernels only help with the sleeping (barely). They dont really help with actual usage because of the slippery slope.
Also the Epic is a true 4G phone. It treats 4G more like 3G than WiFi. With the Evo, once you connect to 4G, it runs nonstop, which is why people thought 4G was a guzzler and thats why I was afraid to use it on my Epic. but the Epic actually times it out when not in use and starts it back up once in use, saves a ton of battery.
So Hardware: Epic wins
Software: Evo wins
Overall: Epic
Now the Evo wins software because of the updates and dev community, but let me put it like this....I had the Evo since August and since August Ive tried literally all roms and kernels...damn near every different combination...I followed every tip provided that promised better performance and battery life...and at the end of the day my phone was basically the same as it was out of the box. I was happy because I've never seen any better and thought that the Evo was the best out there. After one day of using the Epic, I can't go back. I just flashed DK28 and that experience alone is way better than anything the Evo has had to offer. Performance = top notch. Battery life = top notch. Its just perfect. This phone is simply perfect and I honestly don't think that HTC should be allowed to make anymore Android phones.
I'm trying to decide between the HTC Evo 3D and the Samsung Within which is Sprint's version of the Galaxy S2. I figure Epic users would have some good insight on how the Within might turn out.
The one big knock on the Galaxy S2 I keep hearing is Samsung's lack of support and updates when compared to HTC.
Is this something that has really been problematic for Epic owners and do you think it will be a big issue with the Within?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
There are a couple threads on this question, so a quick search will bring up several lengthy discussion to help with your choice
For the most part, I would say go with the S2
IMO, the hardware specs are a lot better, but the main reason, the one that trumps all others, at least at this time IMO, is the locked bootloader on the EVO 3D that blocks advanced modding of the phone
This is supposd to change, but until it does, you should stay away from the EVO 3D
Here are links to help
The GS2 stomps all over the Evo 3D. I saw one at the Sprint store and I was not impressed.
S2. Plus its completely unlocked.

S2 WiThin is the best upcoming phone to come to sprint, that we know about at this point in time.

Photon is a good choice too. I'd probably pick the GS2 tho. Better Processor, Better Screen, unlocked bootloader. No crappy 3d, which I know you don't have to use it but still. 3d is horrible. It reminds me of those 3d greeting cards with the weird plastic.

Me too, it hurt my eyes to look at the one in the store.

There were some articles floating around today saying the US GS2 devices may not even come at this point or could be heavily delayed. Lack of carrier interest based on other competitive devices or something like that.

I find that hard to believe, considering the S2 has been Samsung's best selling phone ever, so far.

Yeah, it seems crazy to me... I'll dig up links, running around the office at the moment.
It was something about when the GS1 came out there was significantly less competition on that level but now everyone and their Mom has that level of phone out or coming out and Samsung sucks for CDMA.
Obviously that's not my opinion and I am paraphrasing, lol.
Here's one: http://androidcommunity.com/samsung...h-delay-down-to-carrier-disinterest-20110708/
I'd buy the Within simply for the fact that it has either 16 or 32gb of built in storage plus the micro SD support of up to 32gb. 64 potential gigs of storage is pretty insane

Well, hopefully the whole, “negotiations with American telecom companies have dragged on” part won't drag on for too much longer. But I think if negotiations are still up in the air it doesn't look good for a summer release.
Most reports I have seen, at least for the Within, still peg the release at late July.
Considering the S2 is set to be the most popular smart phone EVER, I find the rumor of phone company disinterest hard to buy into, rumor or no rumor.
But gotta admit, only time will tell.

I certainly hope it's all BS. I am itching for something new.
Let's hope sprint doesn't gimp the s2 the way it did the epic just to make the evo's look good :/

Went to the local Sprint store, they had two Photon's on display to use. No offense, but that phone is garbage. Both units felt very laggy...the screen was washed out...Motoblur is disgusting...
My rooted Nexus-S 4G felt night and day smoother/faster, and the colors on my screen were a HUGE difference, as in way better quality and deep blacks and bright colors, the Photon looked bad. Vanilla stock Android is one hundred times better than Motoblur.
I am shocked for the Nexus-S being a bit dated tech wise, it is still my favorite phone of all the Sprint phones out today, I had the EVO 4G which was great last year, but is now slower and dated...bought the EVO-3D returned 3 weeks later, it was cool, just not a big fan of Sense, and the screen colors were just ok, picked up the Nexus-S 4G rooted it and installed Oxygen 2.2.1 ROM + Matr1x 6.0 kernel and this phone is a beast And I am sorry, but the Photon is the worst of the four phones I have tried, no offense.
So to recap, I had the EVO 4G at launch last summer, it was a kick ass device last year, now it is showing it's age. The EVO-3D is very nice, but Sense is not my cup of tea anymore, and no need for 3D on a phone, the Photon is terrible, and the Nexus-S still looks and feels fresh. Out of these four phones the Nexus looks like the newest and greatest of the four, which is crazy, because the spec's on the N-S are dated.
Curious if the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S2 will finally be the best Sprint Droid, and dethrone my Nexus ?
the epic touch will be a monster phone, and imo teh best on on sprint.. for about 2-3 months.. then the nexus prime will come out.. and no one will remember any of these phones

I hope they can get Oxygen ROM running on the new Sprint Galaxy S2, "Oxygen" is a pure stock Android ROM, removes all the crap, and just the pure stripped down vanilla goodness from Android only. It would maker the Galaxy S2 warp speed fast And with a super AMOLED+ screen with "voodoo" controls

Cyanogen has the GSII version so I'm sure they'll port it over. But I couldn't agree more with the op. I just got another one for my wife and a bunch of friends got it per my recommendation. They all love it.
And guess what, ill see you all in about a month on ICS typing in this thread

Not sure if Sprint is getting it right away ? Could be May 2012 like the Nexus-S release. Rumors make it sound like Verizon might be the first this time around possibly.
no, its been passed around verizon's hq as google is trying to get them onboard (the only major national carrier that doesnt have a nexus device) the cdma and wimax code is already there, there is no reason on why a cdma version cant come out the same day.
with sprint and the big g playing buddy buddy, its hard to imagine that a sudden turnaround on sprints part
The photon has a better screen. Fact. But I like my Nexus S so much more.
Does anybody know what the deal with the S in all of these phones is anyways?

This seems like one of those instances where the outside reviews, phonedog reviews and sprint.com reviews of the ns, that its not winning a popularity contest. It reminds me of what I heard when it came out mother's day. They said that mostly the devs and diehard android fans will like the nexus. Everybody else likes everything else. Even when I retire this phone for the prime, I'm not going to hand me down to the girlfriend. I've seen the way she sometimes treats my epic and know she wouldn't appreciate this phone.
