I'm trying to decide between the HTC Evo 3D and the Samsung Within which is Sprint's version of the Galaxy S2. I figure Epic users would have some good insight on how the Within might turn out.
The one big knock on the Galaxy S2 I keep hearing is Samsung's lack of support and updates when compared to HTC.
Is this something that has really been problematic for Epic owners and do you think it will be a big issue with the Within?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
There are a couple threads on this question, so a quick search will bring up several lengthy discussion to help with your choice
For the most part, I would say go with the S2
IMO, the hardware specs are a lot better, but the main reason, the one that trumps all others, at least at this time IMO, is the locked bootloader on the EVO 3D that blocks advanced modding of the phone
This is supposd to change, but until it does, you should stay away from the EVO 3D
Here are links to help
The GS2 stomps all over the Evo 3D. I saw one at the Sprint store and I was not impressed.
S2. Plus its completely unlocked.

S2 WiThin is the best upcoming phone to come to sprint, that we know about at this point in time.

Photon is a good choice too. I'd probably pick the GS2 tho. Better Processor, Better Screen, unlocked bootloader. No crappy 3d, which I know you don't have to use it but still. 3d is horrible. It reminds me of those 3d greeting cards with the weird plastic.

There were some articles floating around today saying the US GS2 devices may not even come at this point or could be heavily delayed. Lack of carrier interest based on other competitive devices or something like that.

I find that hard to believe, considering the S2 has been Samsung's best selling phone ever, so far.

Yeah, it seems crazy to me... I'll dig up links, running around the office at the moment.
It was something about when the GS1 came out there was significantly less competition on that level but now everyone and their Mom has that level of phone out or coming out and Samsung sucks for CDMA.
Obviously that's not my opinion and I am paraphrasing, lol.
Here's one: http://androidcommunity.com/samsung...h-delay-down-to-carrier-disinterest-20110708/
I'd buy the Within simply for the fact that it has either 16 or 32gb of built in storage plus the micro SD support of up to 32gb. 64 potential gigs of storage is pretty insane

Well, hopefully the whole, “negotiations with American telecom companies have dragged on” part won't drag on for too much longer. But I think if negotiations are still up in the air it doesn't look good for a summer release.
Most reports I have seen, at least for the Within, still peg the release at late July.
Considering the S2 is set to be the most popular smart phone EVER, I find the rumor of phone company disinterest hard to buy into, rumor or no rumor.
But gotta admit, only time will tell.

Well, I was going to buy one of the new 4G phones because as it was rumored the Thunderbolt was supposed to be available this weekend.. but it is not to be I suppose SOOO..
I'm looking to buy a Fascinate off contract in order to save my upgrade.
Just wondering if there is anything I should know? I have an Incredible and I know depending on your model number it's either AMOLED or SLCD. Now I know all Fascinates are SAMOLED, but I was just using that as an example of something I would need to know if I was buying an Incredible.. if that makes any sense at all.
Thanks for your time
As far as I know there are no differences in the fascinates out here beyond best buys unique white model.

If you're going to end up upgrading to a 4G phone soon after you buy the Fascinate, then why get it at all? It's just a waste of money when you already have an Incredible. Just wait for a good phone to come out.

Yeah, if I hadn't just gotten the Fascinate I would probably prefer to wait for the i520. The new SAMOLED+ looks even more amazing than SAMOLED, and I'm probably one of the few who wishes the Fascinate had a bigger screen.
I have a fascinate and an incredible right now. The fascinate is better hardware wise. The only thing keeping me on the incredible is cyanogen.
The fascinate is STILL stuck on 2.1 and while it performs well it still feels like it's missing something. I also miss the track ball and the camera of the incredible. And the name is much better IMO

At the press conference today they mentioned that all of the ten new devices they showed will be available the first half of the year, and "some as early as March"... So we are probably looking at April-May-June for most LTE devices
Guys no need to get angry. The guy asked for an opinion on the fascinate. And I think he needs one from someone who came from an Iphone on ATT to Samsung Fascinate on Verizon. What can he learn about a phone from ONLY people who are stuck with it........... Nothing. I think a negative review helps alot.
The fascinate has good hardware. But ive always said that android lacks in the applications department. Plain and simple.
Be smart the IPHONE is getting released on February 3rd. Wait try them both out....Then decide for yourself. Whats good for one person isnt good for another.
Another negative point SAMSUNG has the worst reputation with updating there android phones. Just a thought.

However, his question was not about which overall phone he should get. Just if there were anything specific to know about within the Fascinate family.
As for your opinion, its just that, you're personal opinion that only fits you. You were used to an iPhone and the apps you had. You got a completely different product that you are less happy with because you probably can't find the same apps or ones that worked comparably to what you had. Does that mean its automatically inferior, no, we as humans are just habitual and dislike change.
As for hardware, yeah, the iPhone's front camera and Apple's specific image software to tip the scales for the iPhone4 over the Fascinate. However, the EVO 4G easily bests the iPhone4.
If he were to wait on a different phone, he should do as others said and keep the Incredible and wait until later this year when a slew of LTE phones drop that ALL destroy iPhone4 and probably 5 as it will not be 4G.
As for iOS vs Android, meh, personal opinion. I like Android better as a techy guy and love the better inclusion of Google products. Again, we humans are habitual and my short stints with friends iPhones really don't do much.
For me, I'll stick with a far more open option that is rapidly surpassing anything iDevice has offered. Plus, I can create my own apps for free and without having to buy a Mac.

I just jumped ship from the Fascinate to the Thunderbolt a few days ago. Rooted and have been experimenting.
After getting a sense of the Thunderbolt and putting it side by side with the Fascinate, its not as dominant as I would have expected. The Fascinate's SAMOLED screen is just substantially better than the Thunderbolt's S-LCD. Its not even close really. Also, the latest gen Snapdragon + Adreno 205....doesn't seem as snappy as the Fascinate SoC. Fascinate definitely has better graphics. Very subtle stutters on the Thunderbolt after testing a few ROMs and Kernels. Also, its certainly a matter of opinion, but the Thunderbolt is just a tad too big compared with the Fascinate. They have the power button on top like an iPhone, and the way I would naturally grip the phone puts the power button barely out of reach of my index finger. I have to do a very small phone adjust in my hand to allow my index finger to get on top of the power button, but the Fascinate's 4 inch screen is about as large as I would imagine it could get for it to require no movement of the phone in the palm while operating it, which is preferable I think.
On the other hand - Verizon's LTE network is stupid fast. NYC with its saturated 3G networks -- the LTE network is like coming up for air after nearly drowning. Its rock solid everywhere I've been, almost like ubiquitous WiFi. When you really think about it, even the best Dual-Core Cortex A9 phones on ATT can't really touch a Cortex A8 experience on WiFi. The network makes an enormous difference and that can't be stressed enough.
The Thunderbolt is sexier than the Fascinate with its screen off. I don't really care about the kickstand, but the feel and heft is a welcome change from the Fascinate. Although not a graphics beast, it is by no means a slouch. The UI is very snappy, and I'll be very curious once CM7/AOSP gets released.
Thats the final thing about the Thunderbolt that I think is worth mentioning. The Thunderbolt forum is buzzing. Lots of devs, people are gearing up for CM7 nightlies/crackflashing. Not to say this forum wasn't Fantastic, but the Thunderbolt, and HTC in general, seem to have a slightly more robust community. I'm not at all upset with my decision to switch, but the Fascinate is by NO MEANS old hardware right now, in fact using the Thunderbolt makes me appreciate how good Samsung was on the hardware side.

That is a great question. I bought a used Fascinate to hold me over, and to learn the Android system. I am hoping that later in the year I can get something with dual core and LTE. But I also don't want to give up battery life. So this may not be possible.
I like Android, but have a bad opinion of Samsung compared to my previous multiple HTC WinMo devices.
So I want:
For the OS: Android, likely not Microsoft, never Apple.
Manufacturer: HTC, maybe Moto, Samsung is low on the list.
Carrier: Verizon...........period.. What I need it for, other choices fail.
Dual core would be nice, but not at the expensive of a lot of battery life.
I want LTE. Not badly, but there is not much reason to throw away a 2 year contract and not get it.
The Thunderbolt is almost it, and may BE it, for me. Maybe I really don't want dual core just yet anyway. The new SGS II is probably nice, but I'm sure I would be returning in to Verizon as it would have the same hardware weaknesses that I see in the Fascinate.
So I'm waiting it out for now to see what else comes along. Until I smash this P.O.S. Fascinate against the ground and I'm forced to decide.
It's going to be really tough for me to buy another Samsung phone. The internal guts of the Fascinate are awesome (which is why I bought it), but the lack of support and poorly written code is a real let-down. I'm definitely going to explore other phone manufacturers and carriers to see how things compare. If another network suits my daily needs, I'll definitely switch... possibly to T-Mobile given their upcoming line-up of phones. I'm not excited about the possible AT&T merger, but I definitely won't be locking myself into any contracts in the near future. Android progresses way too quickly to get locked into anything longer than 1 year - and those contracts are going away.
As much as most would hate to hear it, if the iPhone had Google Navigation, a universal micro-USB port and maybe removable internal storage + battery... I would consider it. I doubt those things would ever happen, so no iPhone for me. An MIUI-compatible Android would be much better anyways.
Galaxy S2. Samsung is improving. I mean, GB is rolling out to the i9000 before any other phone. Their hardware is superior. With the Galaxy S2, it's EXT4. AND, the bootloader is gonna be open. It seems that they ARE listening to the consumers. Though I'm angry that we still don't have 2.2, I blame Verizon for that more than Samsung.
I like both phone, both has crazy specs, I have the evo now and love it. What I love about the evo is that there is so many roms to choose from. My main concern is which phone is easier to develop for and do you think Samsung development community would be as big as HTC development community. Not to mention that I love the cm roms and there roms is still in experimental stage for Samsung. I really answering my own question for the evo3d but that screen on the galaxy s2 is calling me.

I sold my EVO and bought an Epic back in December... big mistake for someone that likes to dev and tweak his phone. The Epic hardware is awesome, but the dev support is very lacking. Yeah, I could overclock my Epic and score 2400+ on Quadrant and it took great HD Video compared to the EVO. The screen was also beautiful. I traded the Epic for an EVO because I missed being able to dev. If you're the type of person that always wants to be on the cutting edge with the newest version of Android, then stay with what the DEVs are using (probably EVO3D). If you're someone that runs the same ROM for months at a time (i.e. not a flashaholic) then the Samsung S II may be best for you. It depends on what you're looking for and what you're looking to do with your phone.

I checked out both phones at Google IO. The galaxy S2 was so thin and the screen was amazing. Both phones were super snappy.
The only turnoffs for me on the galaxy s2 was the plasticky cover and the weight. Anyone who's owned a Samsung phone knows what i'm talking about with the plasticky feeling phones. But the weight of the S2 blew me away. I can't remember a lighter smartphone. It felt like a toy. It was basically "too light." I'm sure for many, that phrase doesn't even make sense, but for me, I like phones that feel solid and have some substance to them. For some, when they throw this phone in their pocket, they won't even know its there.
I have to hand it to Samsung though. The S2 is an impressive engineering accomplishment. Its the highest performance phone I've seen announced, and its so damn thin and light.
I'm personally a fan of sense, or at least having the option of sense, and I doubt that would ever fully translate to a Samsung product no matter what developers are working on it.
I really love the slab form of the GSII, if they release a HTC slab phone (like the Sensation) on Sprint, that would really be the phone I'd want. Evo 2?
HTC has better radios and gps, Samsung sucks!
the s2 does seem intriguing...also i hate that instead of hdmi out, the use usb and then give you a converter cable w/ an additional power source on it. plus, for some unknown reason, it seems we could be waiting a while before it actually hits the market in the states for some reason eventhough it is already in europe (gsm version). also, i hopped on to the evo 3d thread a while ago and the dev's were introducing themselves...there were LOADS of great dev's coming on board. With the specs and dev's on board, the 3d will have some spectacular features!
I am intrigued by the GS2 and the new version of Touchwiz... I HATE HATE HATE touchwiz, but the new version looks ok so far.
One thing that will keep me from considering the GS2 is if it has a physical keyboard. I don't know why Sprint has to be the one that gets that...
I'm going with the EVO 3D. The specs look awesome.

Doesn't surprise me. I just swapped out my NS4G for a white Evo. The Evo is performing much better for me. If they come up with a fix shortly I'll probably switch back or hope the Evo 3D comes out by June 10th to be within my 30 days at BB. I just switched to Sprint and would rather not start out a contract with almost a yr old device. I will say that the Evo is still a very competitive phone after a year which says a ton about what a kick ass device it is.

Luckily its a Nexus device, expect a update in about 1/10 of the time it'd take the EVO 4G or 3D.

The radios in the Galaxy S series actually work lawlz. The hardware and the software for the radio in the Moment were so terrible, that it would lock up and you would have to restart the damn thing to get service again. This was a common issue with the Moment, and Samsung's "fix" for this was to tell people to upgrade to the Intercept! A more slim line device with the same chipset, but smaller resolution screen and a slower 3g radio. Big reason the radio locked up, is because the Moment was literally the Galaxy Spica with a cdma radio inside of it, and a keyboard.
Funny, I noticed this when I went to the Sprint store and ran a random comparison speed test to my Evo, side by side. My Evo pulled around 7mb while the Nexus only about 3.

Wasn't the GPS radio effed in the Galaxy?
Im returning my Nexus S for this exact reason, I am also preordering the Evo 3D, I came to find out that it can display 16m colors much as the nexus can.
Ha! Sounds like we are in almost the same situation. I ended up getting rid of my NS (after five of them) on T-Mobile and switched to Sprint with the Evo. I was hesitant to start a contract on such an "old" phone, but I have to say that Evo is the best phone I've owned to date and I'm in no hurry to upgrade. After suffering through several miserable launch day phone experiences in the last year, I am very happy to be on version 4 hardware combined with a ridiculous amount of development I've barely started to get into. Running CM7+LP+GO Dialer/Contacts = perfect for me.

No one is really trying to defend them here...
But Samsung phones are pretty nice phones, good hardware and build too. They're nice, when they actually work. Thankfully, the SII seems to be the phone that Samsung is not only stepping up on software support like they did with the Galaxy S release(But not Samsung US), but hardware support as well. The Infuse radio works as intended to work(Though not an SII device), and the SII didn't have any real hardware issues like gps like the S did.

I honestly don't understand this. Have you owned a Samsung device within the last year or are you referring to posts you've seen in forums and online. I feel like Samsung takes way more of a beating then they deserve. In past times their phones might not have been the greatest, but it is my honest opinion that within the last year and a half they are beginning to make a complete turn around and build a well earned reputation. Currently they are producing and putting out a plethora of well specced and software updated devices that are capable of competing among the best in the game. Look at the screen tech they are developing. Word on the street is they have a prototype of a mobile screen with a higher ppi then apples retina display. Have you seen the retina display? Im no apple fan boy but its gorgeous, I have to take a magnifying glass to it to identify a pixel. The point is, it is time we let go of our ancient views of samsung and give them another chance, theyve made a come back into the game and very deservedly so.
I'm sure this has been discussed before but I'm wondering from a dev's perspective if a Epic Touch will be similar to the Epic in terms of development. I really love the EPIC and we are lucky to have a solid list of good dev's. But there has always been that road block for us because our hardware was so different. I had a Hero before this phone and needless to say I miss the huge community, but overall I've liked the EPIC ton's more because the hardware/speed is so awesome. Is this something we can expect with the Galaxy S2 series? And is this just a matter of people just know HTC better so dev'ing for one of their phones is just more familiar to everyone, or is Samsung just making our phones overly complicated to dev?
The development community will be much bigger, simply because the SGS2 is the most popular phone in every country it's in. So of course when it hits US it's going to be very popular.
Hardware is closer to the other variants than the epic was to is, so it should be better. Also, Verizon's not getting it, so that should bring some devs over here. The only difference seems to be CDMA and that only takes a few files, so ports should be much easier.
It'll be similar because we still have 4g and different builds along with carriers putting all their extra junk in it. However, we should at least be all running the same software wise this time. We will still be last receiving updates because GSM networks always get them first.

Might as well wait an extra month or 2 for the Nexus Prime.

Exactly...
I really don't see how anybody can answer this with any reasonable amount of certainty. Wait 'till it happens and see, don't rely on baseless speculation.
Looks like the SG2 already has a strong delv community

Noone even knows if sprint is getting the prime. It would suck to wait only to find out we aren't getting it
Tapatalkin' it from my Epic 3g
