I used up my upgrade on an optimus because I was desperate to get away from my hero. Now this phone comes out and Its making my nipples hard. My friend has the evo and we're always competing so I wanted to see if this phone could shut him up lol

The shift out performs the evo in every aspect as far as benchmarks are concerned. Outside some gaming and things of that nature, every day use will be very similar.
A little too much information on how this phone makes ur body react...
Will it emulate psx games well? Sorry about that lol
I switched from an evo and I wouldn't go back. The development goes a little slower buts its still good. This phone out performs my evo in almost every facet. I haven't tried PS games but my evo had troubles playing Dungeon Defenders but the shift overclocked has no issues whatsoever. So take that for what its worth.

Really enjoying this phone. This is a huge step up from my Motorola Cliq and I really like this phone. No lag, all the apps/games seem to run/play great. The only two things I wish were different is to have a physical camera button and allow menu/home to wake screen when locked. But the camera app loads really fast and I understand why those buttons don't wake screen, I just wish they did. All and all, I'm glad I switched to the Shift and can't imagine going back.
I've had no problem emulating PSX games..I still prefer the GBA ones though..less buttons I guess..

Or you could wait til summer and see if the rumored evo 2 comes out. The optimus is a good midrange phone though. Its the only one that I would consider if I had to downgrade or couldn't afford a top tier phone. All the other mid to low range android phones suck on sprint right now.
Nobody take me wrong but at times I kinda regret not going with the evo just because its forums are fast moving and really active. like I said none take me wrong because I love my shift its so smooth. I thought all android was like this but I'm proud to say my phone runs android smooth. I thought this phone was going to be a hit like the evo. I'm hoping in general things take off. Anyone having the same feelings about the evo shift?

Development is going fine, most of the development goes on behind the scenes and there are a lot of non-public builds out there.
Most of the action is in the IRC right now. I'd say about 1/2 of the builds are on the irc only. Some of the best builds are on the irc, or released early with bug fixes in irc. Things have taken off, but it's mostly behind the scenes.
I don't regret getting a shift at all =P
In no way do i regret getting a shift
No regrets here! My girlfriend has the evo so I've played with it since it came out and this was my upgrade from the hero. I love this phone! Lol

I'm rooted but still running the stock rom. The phone runs smoother than the Evo (especially when running live wall papers) and battery life is much better when the phone is in use. I'm not blown away by the phone like when I first purchased the Evo, but I still think the Shift is a better phone. I thought I would miss the bigger screen of the Evo, but the sharpness of the Shift's screen almost makes up for it.
All I'm waiting for in a custom rom is one that has toggle switches in the pull down notification bar.
My perception of the Shift is that development does move slower than I had hoped/expected. That's just my perception coming from the Hero. (Not slighting those doing the good work.) However, my "regret" comes from personal tastes.
- I don't need a physical keyboard and the added bulk has started to bug me
- The keyboard slider isn't as tight as I feel it should be, and makes the phone feel a little more cheap that I'd prefer.
- Small design elements bother me (Chrome trim and circles, blue...)
The main "regret" feeling now comes from the Nexus S 4G that's rumored to be announced at CTIA. Likely selling the Shift to pick that up if it's released relatively soon.

Did you remove the plastic from the back? If you did, that's probably why. I left it on and it's pretty tight.
Ahh me too!i wish i would have waited for the nexus from sprint but my heros charger port failed so i had to get something fast.=/ im have faith for the shift development.the hero rom development was amazing!!it made me love the phone.Im just looking forward to what everyone can do with the shift also im hoping in a camcorder mod or something like the nexus one did =] im sure it is possible.im starting to get into cooking some roms and everything but i just havent gotten it all down yet.my shift makes me wanna learn though!alot more than my hero!and the keyboard does feel a bit loose after a while but ive always had that problem with phones with slide out keyboards.i just hope it doesnt mess up like one of my old phone that caused the screen not to be touch able anymore.Dont Regret!give it time!

^ Shift Faced
The Shift is still a young platform, give it time. The EVO has had almost a year head start on the Shift as far as development goes, so it's no surprise that the community would be booming over there.
I too had this same question when it came time to upgrade. As a Hero CDMA user, I enjoyed a fantastic, active community, even for a phone that was based on ARMv6. If a phone of that caliber STILL has a community as vibrant as it is, the Shift is SURE to foster a wonderful kitchen of ROM creation and hacking. We've already got some excellent folks on board (I'm looking @ you NFX!) and more will come as people upgrade their phones.
I much prefer HTC builds to the likes of Samsung. The slide on my Shift is taught and feels solid - I too left the plastic on the back / edges. When the time came to select a phone, I tried everything at T-Mobile and Sprint and the only phone that would have enticed me away from the Shift would have been the G2. That second gen Snapdragon / Adreno 205 rocks my socks. So fast, so smooth.
I love this phone.
(ps. I also did not want a physical keyboard, but I'm falling in love with it, ESPECIALLY when ssh'ing into a box or using the terminal emulator)

I have a Captivate on ATT right now, but when I turn 18 on June 24th, I can switch to sprint and get unlimited everything for $30 a month from my work. The Evo Shift 4G has been catching my eye lately. Is it still worth getting? I really want a phone with a physical keyboard and this one has a very nice keyboard.
as far as phones with keyboards, then yea, it's by far your best option. although overall, i'd say the new phones coming out (albeit sans keyboard) would be better.
at least the evo 3d anyway.
Phone needs to have a physical keyboard. The Epic 4G has a terrible keyboard, and quite frankly, I'd rather not have another Samsung phone, although I do like my Captivate a lot.
I love my Shift. Works great for me and I love how fast it is. If you have to pay for it, Radioshack seems to have the lowest prices for it.
$30 a month, unlimited everything, and an EVO Shift4G. Where do I sign up. As far as the Shift, I don't have anything bad to say. Phone is ubber fast out of the box. Plus it can be OC'd to crazy numbers. Stable. Nice themes. Physical keyboard. Good support for a fairly new phone. I say go for the Shift.
personally if i were you, i wouldn't get the shift. i'd wait for another good HW keyboard phone on sprint. the shift's ROM development sucks, almost nothing here. wait for something more supported by devs...

The Captivate has far too many roms. I'm not the kind of person that flashes a new rom every few days or so, I typically flash one every one-two months, so number of roms available does not matter to me as long as CM is available for it, or at least a rom based on stock that's good.
My whole family has shifts! I love it! Even more so that I installed miui rom on it!
Love my shift...
I have had my shift for several days now and am very pleased with it. I was thinking about the normal EVO 4g , but i went with the shift instead. i am glad i did i think the EVO 4g is just a bit to big to be piratical. I love the keyboard and do not find it slow. the only thing i find bad is the limited on board storage. as of now i am not planing on rooting my phone or putting a separate ROM on it.
You forgot to mention that MIUI is available. I agree with the others that say the shift is more than capable. I love mine and it keeps up with the "big" boys in any real world tasks.

Liquid Acer would be sweet, loved it on my EVO. CJ_
If you need a keyboard, then the EVO Shift is the way to go. My wife has one and I occasionally have to use it. The physical keyboard is awesome for typing long emails, working in terminals, internet forum posts, etc.
While I like my EVO for the larger screen, when I have to type the 300 word email while in a meeting, I wish I had her phone...
Alright, I'm going to get one of these next month. I like the fact that the phone isn't huge like the Captivate. I don't play games or watch videos on my phone, so a large screen isn't a necessity. The keyboard felt nice when I played with it, haven't gotten to play with an actual Shift yet though.

I see the last thread with questions like this was from March, so I just wanted to get the latest about the EPIC...
Are there GPS, wifi, or keyboard issues or these are fixed by one or multiple ROMS available?
Are many devs still working on this device or had it been somewhat abandoned?
is CM7 pretty good without major bugs ?
will the battery last a full day with most ROMs with regular use (i.e. checking email, some web browing, maybe an hour of music streaming, etc)
Netflix works on some ROMs, right?
I have a Hero with CM7 and I like, but amazon still has (and BB just ended yesterday) free EPIC for upgrades, so thinking about getting one. I would get the EVO, but it's still $150 almost anywhere and at that price I would rather pay $200 for the E3D...but from $0 to $200 there's still a big difference
Thanks in advance

1. No problems with those in almost any ROM.
2. Devs are still around and work is still being done.
3. CM7 is still in Alpha 4 but its being worked on by TeamHacksung.
4. Cant really answer about batter since there are more factors than the ones you mentioned like signal quality in your area. Battery has gotten better though.
5. Yes, Netflix works on some ROMs.
Side note: Hero development was and still is pretty big compared to the Epic, dont expect the same amount of development for it.

Thanks for the answer, but wow, Hero has more development than the Epic? I wouldn't have expected that. I was going to get the Epic from BB yesterday, but the one I went to sold out and the next one only had two and I ran out of time, so I either get it from Amazon or wait for another sale
The Epic is a very awesome device and is adequte for your your eveyday uses on top of mods. The Epic has tons of ROMs, themes, and other customization tools that have been worked on the past few months which made many of them "bug free". The full QWERTY keyboard comes in hand which really makes this device "EPIC".
If you are a real hard core developer and wouldn't mind living without the keyboard then I would recommend the Nexus which is very simular but with monster hardware, like the dual core processor for increased speed and performance. The down fall to these new devices is that there has not been as much development put into them yet, so customization is not as optional compared to the "Epic". The epic is an advance telecommunicational device not a cell phone but unfortunately there are more cell phone users on the sprint network that don't understand the power of the Epic. I hope this clearifies your decision. I hope that you decied to live the "Epic Life".

Nexus S has dual core? Since when?
Also, Hero has more development since it was one of the first Android phones for Sprint, it was one of the nicest ones for its time and it was an HTC phone. Samsung tends to keep away developers. After the Evo came out, a few devs jumped ship to that but there were too many devs to let the phone die. Hell, look at Deca, I was so happy when he said he got an Epic knowing all the stuff he did for the Hero, I still cant wait what he can do for the Epic.

The keyboard was a big factor for me in choosing the Epic over the Evo. I still think I made the right choice, but I *never* use the keyboard. It's just too easy to type with swype. Whenever I ultimately decide to upgrade, it will be to a phone with no keyboard.

GPS Aids is a must, GPS is golden now.
4G only works outside...
The Viper Rom is the best, just use Root Uninstaller to delete the teams bloatware.
Dont overclock (only fun for benches), its not worth the battery lose/glitches.. Just use setcpu to change the governor to Performance.. Alot of games play good with Performance gov. and clocks set to as low as 400 mhz.
Only complaint: No gyro. Dont give me any lines about this! I play quite a few games that operate via tilting the phone only, rather than the touch screen

If you google 'phonearena *phone model* specs' you'll be able to see some of the differences between the phones. I was stuck between the Transform and EVO Shift myself a week ago when I picked up my new phone and silly enough the EVO won because HTC shipped it with a word processor app (I'm big into using my phone for rough draft documents). This was the big seller for me since I came from using winmo which always came with a mini version of MS Word.
