I see the last thread with questions like this was from March, so I just wanted to get the latest about the EPIC...
Are there GPS, wifi, or keyboard issues or these are fixed by one or multiple ROMS available?
Are many devs still working on this device or had it been somewhat abandoned?
is CM7 pretty good without major bugs ?
will the battery last a full day with most ROMs with regular use (i.e. checking email, some web browing, maybe an hour of music streaming, etc)
Netflix works on some ROMs, right?
I have a Hero with CM7 and I like, but amazon still has (and BB just ended yesterday) free EPIC for upgrades, so thinking about getting one. I would get the EVO, but it's still $150 almost anywhere and at that price I would rather pay $200 for the E3D...but from $0 to $200 there's still a big difference
Thanks in advance

The Epic is an excellent device. Pretty much any issue we have has been fixed by the great devs here, but remember that the E3D and GS2 will be available soon. You might wanna wait and see first.

1. No problems with those in almost any ROM.
2. Devs are still around and work is still being done.
3. CM7 is still in Alpha 4 but its being worked on by TeamHacksung.
4. Cant really answer about batter since there are more factors than the ones you mentioned like signal quality in your area. Battery has gotten better though.
5. Yes, Netflix works on some ROMs.
Side note: Hero development was and still is pretty big compared to the Epic, dont expect the same amount of development for it.

Thanks. I know both are coming, the ED3 probably much sooner...I don't think I'll spend $200 on one of those phones though...but I am hoping the regular EVO can be free somewhere soon

Thanks for the answer, but wow, Hero has more development than the Epic? I wouldn't have expected that. I was going to get the Epic from BB yesterday, but the one I went to sold out and the next one only had two and I ran out of time, so I either get it from Amazon or wait for another sale
The Epic is a very awesome device and is adequte for your your eveyday uses on top of mods. The Epic has tons of ROMs, themes, and other customization tools that have been worked on the past few months which made many of them "bug free". The full QWERTY keyboard comes in hand which really makes this device "EPIC".
If you are a real hard core developer and wouldn't mind living without the keyboard then I would recommend the Nexus which is very simular but with monster hardware, like the dual core processor for increased speed and performance. The down fall to these new devices is that there has not been as much development put into them yet, so customization is not as optional compared to the "Epic". The epic is an advance telecommunicational device not a cell phone but unfortunately there are more cell phone users on the sprint network that don't understand the power of the Epic. I hope this clearifies your decision. I hope that you decied to live the "Epic Life".

Nexus S has dual core? Since when?
Also, Hero has more development since it was one of the first Android phones for Sprint, it was one of the nicest ones for its time and it was an HTC phone. Samsung tends to keep away developers. After the Evo came out, a few devs jumped ship to that but there were too many devs to let the phone die. Hell, look at Deca, I was so happy when he said he got an Epic knowing all the stuff he did for the Hero, I still cant wait what he can do for the Epic.

I have had my epic since jan maybe before but it seems like forever the phone stock is great I had no issues with any of the stock apps and functions. Now that I'm rooted and on syndicate frozen 1.1.1 its like having a brand new phone again. my opinion is get it you can't go wrong with it the slide out keyboard is great for games but with swype I almost never use it. Hope this helps.

The keyboard was a big factor for me in choosing the Epic over the Evo. I still think I made the right choice, but I *never* use the keyboard. It's just too easy to type with swype. Whenever I ultimately decide to upgrade, it will be to a phone with no keyboard.
I do apologize about the miss information about the Nexus 4g, I was under the impression that it has a snapdragon processor. I believe that's the E3D. Thanks for the correction guys.

i love my epic..... had a semi brick the other day had me worried but odin did the trick even had a screen that ppl well versed in the epic language have never seen but with some persistance i got her back up and running
If you root it, its a good phone.
GPS Aids is a must, GPS is golden now.
4G only works outside...
The Viper Rom is the best, just use Root Uninstaller to delete the teams bloatware.
Dont overclock (only fun for benches), its not worth the battery lose/glitches.. Just use setcpu to change the governor to Performance.. Alot of games play good with Performance gov. and clocks set to as low as 400 mhz.
Only complaint: No gyro. Dont give me any lines about this! I wanna play Nova with a gyro not a touch screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WILL MOVE OVER TO IPHONE JUST FOR THe GYRO, if still no phones/apps on android support it in Nov.
the keyboard is great for using Terminal Em. or punching in passwords. But ya it might not be worth the bulk..

I must be confused about what you mean by Gyro
I play quite a few games that operate via tilting the phone only, rather than the touch screen
So...I've had my Nexus S 4G for 2 weeks now, and I have to say, the first few days I was having trouble justifying the off contract price of the phone, especially when my Epic was perfectly fine.....
Fast forward to the first week, I was really liking how well it fit in my pocket, not to mention the battery life stock, and the GPS lock in seconds...awesome.
I also decided to root and try CM7, and I've been running it for a week so far, and I'll say it's changed my mind, and I'm definitely keeping this phone now!
And the ONLY thing I missed from my epic was the camera button, and today fooling around with my Nexus, I found that in CM7 you can assign the volume buttons to take pictures, EFFIN AWESOME!
So, I'm in love!

So did the Sprint employees look at you funny when you bought it off contract for full retail?
I've always wondered what they think when enthusiasts come in and lay down half a grand on a phone... It's an expensive hobby.
I also came from the Epic... it's hard to tell they have the same hardware inside.
I don't see myself ever buying a non nexus device again..(here is hoping Sprint continues to play a role in the Nexus devices!!) Android is at it's best when it's running as Google intended. Not to mention the updates and development..
Anyways. Welcome glad you like it.

The sprint stores always seemed surprised. Best buy and the T-Mobile stores never blinked an eye. I've purchased 6 phones at full retail and only got an odd response once (from a Sprint employee).
Having gone from the Nexus One to this phone (and I'll buy the next Nexus phone as well) I hope it comes to Sprint. Otherwise I'll have to jump carriers again.

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

Do not get the Epic!!!!! I didnt like it as its made like ****. The shift is much faster and even my sister wishes she would have just gotten the EVO and shes not even a power user. HTC makes the best phones on the market and I will always be buying my phones from them.

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

Looks like Sprint is going to have to give me a new phone since I'm on my third Shift since release, and this one has major antenna problems (lose data, can't make calls half the time, texts are intermittent, etc.). So I'm wondering if I should try one more shift or actually get an Evo. I'm not getting a Samsung device, they just feel like crap to me.
I don't know what to do darnit lol.
You could see if they'll give you an EVO 3D.

I say stick with the Shift . But I'm biased. Love my Shift, hands down best phone I've ever owned. I had an EVO before this. The EVO is a great phone. But a little too big for the pocket. Plus the Shift can be OC'd way higher. But either way your good. Plenty of Dev's on both phones. Plus you can run some awesome Mik roms on both. Just my two cents.

I looked at the 3D, but it just seems gimmicky to me.
The Evo is likely my best option, but I'll certainly miss the keyboard. I even thought about the Nexus S or Epic, but I just hate the feel of Samsung phones, so I don't think they're an option. I'm not entirely sure they'll let me get another Shift, but if they do you can bet I'm asking for a new one and not a refurb
I've rooted all three Shifts multiple times, the first two were hardware issues (loose keyboard--me being too picky, then a loose ear speaker). Rooting it didn't help the service issues a bit on this third one, which is what leads me to believe there's an antenna issue

if you think the 3d part of the evo3d is gimmicky, just ignore it and realize its a really a CDMA version of the HTC Sensation. One of the best phones on the market.
The shift is a great device, but the 3d blows it out of the water.

ok i my shift has a major antenna problems also i got one phone sent out but do they still change the phones for you?? and whats the $ for say a reg evo . i got my phone over clocked to 1.5 and sprint keeps telling me slower data due to the cpu is 800 not 1ghz like the evo i wish i could tell sprint a thing or too

Well, if you've still got the problems keep calling and complaining. The Evo and the Shift should be an even swap I think. I haven't called them to find out yet.
Granted, I'm on an employee plan and go through employee care tech support, so the rules and prices are a little different.
edit: guess I didn't have a choice...they're sending me yet another Shift, and probably another freaking refurbished one at that.
Well on the upside, since your on your fourth Shift. My buddy works for Sprint. You can actually request/ demand it be a new one. Also, if your unsatisfied with this one new/other. You can request they give you a different device equal to the Shift.

If I could get them to exchange my Shift for a refurb, I'd never activate it and have it on ebay so fast...then get something else...something that can be rooted. For now, I'll just be patient.

They told me that after my third one I could get a "like device", which I took to mean any device of a similar price range, guess I was wrong, or they were yanking my chain.

A refurb shift is likely not upgraded to 2.3.3 or whatever the upgrade was to--yet. This one's a week old and didn't come upgraded, so root was quite easy, even though it didn't help
It's definately a plus if you can still root it.

I certainly hope so. The first two just had minor problems, but the network issues with this one was unbearable

I don't actually work for them, my fiance does lol. The biggest perks about the employee plans are the much lower prices, yearly upgrades, no actual contract, and quicker tech support.
well, I got the new phone in the mail, activated it this morning. Other than having a somewhat loose slider again (which is going to be extremely annoying) it looks like it might work.
updated to 2.3.3 though, so that kind of sucks at the moment.

When my wife had the Samsung moment, I had to go through so many devices before they would offer me something comparable. Which was the intercept, an even worse phone. Not even the Hero was an option! Ended up emailing [email protected] and then reporting to BBB and finally got my upgrade reset. It was a total PITA.
*Sigh* seems like everyday just about that people are leaving the Shift. I honestly like this phone and coming from an HD2, that's saying something....to me anyways. Strapped is leaving and if the other big ones start to leave, then developement will come to a halt...less updates, roms, etc. I certainly don't have the funds to get a dual core phone and honestly, to me they are over hyped. We have laptops, so what's the point of having a big lug of a brick to carry around? Especially if you're a guy. Well, there's my little rant, so cheers to HTC Speedy, Mr.Underrated 2011.

Too bad strapped is leaving but he's not the only developer we have. There are plenty of ROMs out there being actively developed.
As long as we get CM9 or a different AOSP ICS ROM then I'll be happy with my Shift for another year. My last three phones have been landscape sliders, I'm not sure if I could deal with only having an onscreen keyboard.

Agreeded, it was a sad day when strapped had to leave the forum. But that was because of very difficult choice that had to be made. Plus he didn't leave the Shift. He just halted open development, android is in his blood . We still have some very talented Devs on the Shift.

There are other forums that have other roms (sdx developers)... and... the negativity is toooooo much! Seriously, this phone is nowhere near dead. There are also a ton of great devs that have this phone and more than a few up and coming that have the shift as well... it seems that there is always someone starting a thread or making comments that the shift is dead... its not dead at all in the huddle!

The dual cores are over rated and over priced. And a lot of them are very buggy phones in general. That's why development for the HTC Sensation and HTC Evo 3d is taking so long. I doubt the shift will be dead for a very long time.

I love my shift, and I expect when the shift 2 (shift 3d?) drops below $100 ill consider upgrading. The slider is the dealmaker for me; add a powerful touchscreen and no way I'm leaving. 'Sides, I got a bit more than a year on my contract

This. I want my shift to last me as long as until another good slider comes out. Sure theres been sliders released since the shift, but none of them have anything powerful behind that screen. They keyboard is THE dealmaker with me, and I would like to keep my current ability of running full speed 3D games and watching netflix without stutter.
Well, as you can see, this was BEFORE HTC released the kernel source (which was one if not the biggest complaint), so apologies. I got this phone because I liked the fact is was blue (I dislike that I see black bricks everywhere) and the hardware specs looked nice as well. It was either the G2 or this (I disliked it looking like a concrete block.lol) and I can say I'm glad Father allowed me to get this one. As for deving, I'm sure that's not in my lane. The countless nights & hours....can't do it. I haven't looked into the quadcore phones, but I can barely get service out here anyways unless it's by a landline, so I definitely won't spend $4-500 on a phone. I have a computer, so I don't need all this new stuff that's more in the "nice to have, but not needed" range. Also having a 4'3 inch or whatever screen busting my pockets wherever I go. I had enough of that with the HD2. On another note, I am ANXIOUS about having an ICS for this phone.

I got my shift for $150, while the rest of my family went for the $200 evo. Before the shift came out, I was ogling the Epic, but I'm sick of samsung phones. Frankly, I don't need the humungous screen, the compact shift screen is just big enough for my purposes. I hardly use it to watch anything anyways. But IIRC, radio shack was offerring the shift for $50? free? with a 2 yr contract sometime back. Once the Shift 1 is fully EOL, I fully expect similar deals for the shift 3d. You can't keep a phone at the debut price forever. My only real complaint is battery life still sucks compared to the iphone

i got lucky and caught my shift for free on a new contract at radio shack, only problem at the time was it came with 2.3.3 so i wasnt able to get root for a while. otherwise, i love this phone and development is far from dead on it, wait til one_love starts releasing the themes hes been working on in the background.
I got my shift for free because my hero took a poop. Lol thank you best buy.
